He collapsed into bed with a new appreciation for other people and slid his arm around her. He couldn't remember the last time he had pushed himself so long or so hard, much less both at once. He'd forgotten what it was like to be exhausted to the point he now was. As much as he was suffering, he'd have to do it again and soon, he couldn't allow himself to be this weak, not with how many people depended on him - including her. If he was going to be honest with himself, other people might benefit, but he did this for her. When it got hard, when he began to doubt, she was a living reminder of why he did what he was doing. She was the angel that believed in him when everyone else turned against him. She was the one who lifted him up when he was down, the one who also - no matter how high he flew - kept his feet planted firmly on the ground. Just laying there in the dark, on the bed next to her, his arm around her, skin touching skin, it was a balm to the soul, restoring him from everything that he'd been through. It prepared him for everything that he'd go through again, because there was always tomorrow.
