With no time to spare, I ran to my room as soon as the door opened. I didn't see Avan anywhere, but I figured he went to tell Charlie what was going on. They had to get the house and get themselves ready. My grandmother liked things done a certain way, and when things didn't go the way she wanted them, everyone was responsible and paid the consequences.

My grandmother was the type of person who believed girls could only wear skirts, dresses, and high heels, and with me being the only Swan girl, she wanted me to always dress like that. I ran to my closet and moved all the clothes out of the way. At the back of the closet with my normal clothing was a secret door that led to an extra closet I always had with grandmother-approved clothes and shoes.

Opening the door, I pulled out a red tulip skirt. It literally was a tulip. It was made by the fairies with specially grown flowers they cultivated in the fairy world. It was so soft and comfortable, and it ended mid-thigh. I almost wished I could wear them all the time, but if I did, humans would get suspicious as to where I got the skirt. The fabric was like nothing they could ever make, and it was not like humans could just use regular flower petals for clothing. I paired the skirt with a simple white blouse that had lace embellishment at the top and rested softly on my shoulders. I put on the matching pumps that had a ribbon going up my legs and ended in a bow on the back of my knees. Afterwards, I put my hair up in a high ponytail with some curly strands down to frame my face.

After some quick makeup that consisted of eye shadow, mascara, and lip gloss, I ran downstairs to help Charlie and Avan finish setting up the living room. The great thing about the shoes was that they improved my balance. They were also made by fairies, and they were the most comfortable shoes ever.

When I made it downstairs, I saw that they had everything finished. All of the pictures were taken down and replaced by paintings. They had gotten rid of anything that was brightly colored, and candles were lit. The television was also put away and was replaced by a fireplace. There was soft music playing in the background, and everything personal was removed from sight. The only thing missing was the floral print pillows for the couch. The house now looked like it came from a catalog, with nothing to give it that personal feeling, just like she liked it.

"You forgot one thing, Bells," Charlie said, handing me two boxes, one small and one medium-sized. I opened up the small one to reveal a pair of pearl earrings, and the other one had a headband, another thing my grandmother insisted I wear.

"What about the necklace, Charlie? Should I take that off?" I asked, looking at him. I didn't want to remove the heart necklace, but I didn't want my grandmother to be upset if she recognized it.

He thought it over for a second, and then just told me to leave it. Nancy came out of the kitchen with a plate of macaroons and set it on the coffee table. When Avan saw her, he went stiff and gave her a hard look. I was about to ask him what was wrong with him when we heard a car pull up to the front of the house.

"Okay, everyone, in your places. She won't stay long, but from what I know, she's not on her best behavior at the moment." Avan looked a bit worried as he said this; it made me think he had something to do with it.

Abigail Swan was a nice woman. Some would even say she was compassionate and great all around. She had strong beliefs and values, and she expected everyone to follow them, but if something didn't go her way, she transformed into a cold, evil person. She loved power, just like all of the Swans, and the public's opinion was the most important thing to her. It was frightening to have her visit because you never knew when she was going to change from good to bad. One had to always walk around egg shells around her.

As per her usual fashion, she didn't even knock or wait for someone to get the door. She walked right in with her trusty assistant Lucy following behind her. Lucy was Nancy's daughter, and she and Avan had an on again, off again romance.

"Charlie, darling, how I've missed you," she said, giving Charlie a hug and a kiss on each cheek.

"It's good to see you, too, Abby. To what do we owe this lovely surprise?" It was so weird to hear Charlie speak this way. He sounded very diplomatic and serious, instead of like my loving, care-free uncle.

"Can't a mother visit her son every now and then? I also heard that Nancy was leaving today, so I just wanted to say goodbye to her. I heard her new position is going to keep her away for a while." Something in her voice told me that wasn't it. "Isabella, dear, I didn't know you were here. It's great to see you, too. My, oh my, every time I see you, you're more grown up. Spin for me, dear. I want to see you."

Without saying a word, I slowly turned around so she could see me. I felt odd having her do this, but she did it every time I saw her. I hoped she approved and didn't make me change again.

"It's no doubt you get more beautiful every time I see you, my dear. You make a good Swan, and you will make an exceptional leader."

"Thank you, ma'am." As much as I didn't like being reminded about that, I didn't want to upset her, so I just brushed it off.

"It's nice to see you here, too, Avan. I see you are finally doing your job. You had better hope you don't lose track of my granddaughter again. It's your destiny to take care of her, so do it." Avan just looked at the floor as she said this. I now understood that this was why my grandmother was upset.

"It was my fault, ma'am. I left him and came here to visit Charlie. He had obligations in the fairy world, and I knew I would be safe here. Please don't be upset with him."

"You know well, Isabella, that his job is to be by your side and protect you. No one will ever protect you more than him."

"Actually, that's not true," Charlie said to Grandma Swan. I gave him a questioning look, and he just smiled. "Why don't we go sit, and I'll explain." He stood next to my grandmother and offered her his hand. He led her to the living room, where he helped her into a seat. We all followed behind them and each took a seat.

"Okay, I'm sitting down. Now please explain, Charlie."

"Well, you see, Bella made some very nice friends in her time here. They care about her very much, and she cares about them." Charlie had a huge smile in his face, and me, I was blushing like always.

"It's true, Mrs. Swan. I met them today. They were so protective of her that they didn't even let her come and meet me by herself." Avan sounded shocked. The thought of someone protecting me more than him was unbelievable to him.

"So she made friends with humans? Or is it those shape shifters?"

"Actually, mother, they are vampires." My grandmother's eyes popped out so big that it looked like they might fall out of her sockets at any time. Charlie quickly went on to explain. "They are not regular vampires, you see. They are 'vegetarians,' as they jokingly call themselves. They only drink animal blood, and they live among humans. Their leader, Carlisle, is actually a doctor. He can abstain from human blood, and he has never even tasted it before. The rest of his family follows his path, and they have maintained a human blood-free life for a while now. From the moment they met Bella, they became very fond of her. They are great people, and Bella and I trust them completely."

"Is this true, Isabella?" The disbelief in my grandmother's voice was unmistakable.

"Yes, grandmother, I like the Cullens very much. They are nice, respectable people who have been nothing but wonderful to me."

"Well, in that case, I would love to meet them. You should call them over before I leave."

"They will be here in half an hour, mother. We already told them to come."

"Very well, then. Nancy, why don't you come to the study with me for a while. I want to give you some advice about the people you will be working with." Without even waiting for an answer, she got up and went into the study with Nancy fallowing behind her. Lucy was about to follow them, but Avan stopped her.

"Leave it, Lu. They need to talk."

"And how would you know this?" By the tone Lucy used, I could tell there was problems in paradise again.

"Yeah, how do you know?" This boy knew way too much, and I had to find out how.

"I just know that she needs to talk to Nancy, and that's it." We all knew Avan was lying, but I also knew he would tell me everything when we were alone. We never kept secrets from each other.

"Well, I'm hungry. Who wants some pizza?" Charlie was clearly over all of this.

"I'm good, thanks. I ate some fast food on the drive here," said Avan, patting his stomach.

"Thank you, Charlie, but Esme made me some lunch."

"Well, I'm starving, too. I'll eat with you, Charlie," Lucy said, looking up at Charlie with a big smile.

"Okay, then let's go eat and leave these two knuckle heads alone." Charlie started to walk towards the kitchen, and then stopped to look back at us. "You two try and stay out of trouble, okay?"

"We'll try, but we make no promises."

"I'll keep him out of trouble," we said at the same time. With a roll of his eyes, Charlie went to the kitchen, followed by Lucy. As soon as they were out of ear shot, I turned to Avan

"So what the heck is going on?"

"What are you talking about?" Avan had a look of innocence on his face, but it was too innocent. I knew he was hiding something.

"Oh, please, don't give me that. I'm talking about my grandmother being here, and what she wants to talk about with Nancy, Also, what's going on with you and Lu? When I left, things seemed to be going okay."

"I really don't know what's wrong with her. One moment, we are fine, and the next, we are fighting like cats and dogs. All I did was leave for a few days, and when I came back, she was mad and didn't answer my calls. I apologized and told her it was work related, and that made her even angrier." I knew what he was doing, answering the easiest questions first.

"Did she give you any clues as to why?"

"No, all she said was that I obviously had priorities to attend to."

"Don't worry, A. She'll get over it soon enough."

"Yeah, maybe the time apart will help."

"Time apart? Where are you going?"

"I'm staying here until the time comes. She has to stay with your grandmother."

"I'm so sorry, A. I feel like it's my fault you guys are always arguing."

"Don't say that, Bells. It's not your fault. I was appointed to be your guardian. Let's talk about something else. How are you doing in school? Do you like it?"

"Call me crazy, but I sort of do. The Cullens make it really fun; I don't think I've ever laughed so much. I mean, there are some kids I don't really care for, but it's easy to ignore them."

"So you like all of the Cullens equally, or some more than others?" He had a mischievous look in his eyes as he said this. And I, of course, turned bright red. The only person that came to mind was Edward, and I so wasn't ready to speak to Avan about him yet.

"All the same, of course," I said maybe a bit too quickly.

"I don't believe you, but it's okay. I know ways of getting things out of you." The mischievous look was back again, and he was smiling widely now.

"Oh, yeah? How's that?"

He didn't say a word. He just jumped up and started to tickle me everywhere. I let out a scream before I started laughing.

"Get off of me, you big idiot," I said between giggles.

"No! I want to see you laugh so hard you cry," he said as he stopped momentarily.

"Never! I will not surrender to the tickle monster." It was hard to speak when I was so out of breath, but I somehow managed.

"Wanna bet?" he said as he attacked me with more tickles, this time going for my most sensitive tickling spots. I let out another huge scream followed by more laughter.

"What's going on here?" asked my grandmother, coming in the living room. Avan got off of me and helped me straighten up. When I looked around, I noticed everyone was here: my grandmother, Nancy, Charlie, Lucy, and lastly, all of the Cullens.

"You made it," I said getting up to hug all of the Cullens.

"Grandmother, I would like to introduce you to my friends. This is Carlisle Cullen, and this is his family: Esme, his wife, and his kids, Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, Emmett, and Edward," I said as each of them stepped up to shake my grandmother's hand. "Cullens, I would like you to meet my Grandmother, Mrs. Abigail Swan."

"It's nice to meet all of you. I've heard nothing but good things about all of you. Now, come sit. Let's talk for a while," said my grandmother with a smile. She was obviously dazzled by the Cullens' good looks.

"Thank you. We have heard great thing about you, too, Mrs. Swan," said Carlisle.

"Please call me Abigail. May I call you Carlisle?" I'd never heard my grandmother be so nice to someone she just met. She must have really liked the Cullens.

"Yes, absolutely, Abigail," Carlisle answered with a warm smile. They all sat down and started talking. Without thinking, I went to sit in the space next to Edward. This made him smile brightly at me, and Avan just kept looking between him and me. I didn't know what to make of this, so I just let it go and got comfortable for what was sure to be an interesting evening.
