Fionna awoke from a wonderful dream about something that she couldn't remember. Whatever it was, it made her smile and feel amazing. She felt it was more of a who than a what dream. Must have been something about Gumball. Fionna smirked. He would be coming by soon with his friend to see her again. And on top of that, she had her sister to confront.
"Cake," Fionna called, rubbing her eyes. ""Cake, come here would ya?" Out of her room, still sleepy, came Cake. "Yes baby cakes," she paused to yawn, "What is it?" Fionna smiled and crossed her arms.
"Why so tired Cake?"
Cake pursed her lips, "Bad sleep last night. That's all." Fionna nodded all sympathetic like, "Oh, of course. With you being out half the night, you wouldn't have much time to sleep, now would you?" She stretched, trying to keep from laughing. Cake's tail frizzed. "Wh-what are you talking about?" A nervous edge had crept in, and she didn't meet Fionna's eyes exactly.
Fionna couldn't keep it in. "Oh my Glob dude, I know about you and Lord whats-his-face!" She squealed and jumped out of bed. Before her feet could touch the ground though, Cake had scooped her up and brought her face to face with her. "YOU KNOW?! HOW THE FLIP!"
Fionna finally laughed, her sisters shocked face making it all the better. "You think I never noticed your little disappearances? And last night I saw that you weren't in bed, and then I saw you enter the gardens. So I followed, and saw you and the Lord." She paused, "How do you pronounce his name again?"
Cake set her down sighing, "Lord Monochromicorn. I just call him Mocro for short." Fionna poked the cat. "Oooo, pet names! Sounds serious." She wiggled her eyebrows. Cake sighed again, "Actually, it is Fi. You of all people should know how 'serious' it is. If you tell, or if anyone finds out, then…" She shook her head, wrapping her arms around herself. "It's not just me I'm worried about. I'm so worried about him, and now, I have to worry about you too."
Fionna lost her enthusiasm at the sight of Cakes face. She wasn't smiling, only frowning. "Cake, you know I would never tell anyone." Cake nodded, "I know you wouldn't intentionally, but, what if there a slip of the tongue, and you told someone." Fionna booped her nose. "Cake, I would never even do that. Straight to the vault, ok?" She touched her head, "Vault."
Cake smiled a little. "Really?" She nodded to herself, assured. "Ok Fi. I trust you. But what in the world were you going around following me for? Not cool dude!" She lightly punched Fionna's arm, smiling. Fionna laughed, punching her back.
"Well, since you were gone when I got back, you missed the news about Gumball." Cake cocked her head, "I thought you two went on a picnic the other day. How was it?" Fionna brushed it aside, saying it was fine and that she enjoyed it, then told Cake the good news about the visiting royalty.
"Ooooo, sweet babies! A new face to stare at! Great!" She glanced at the grandfather clock, rubbing her paws together. "First impressions are always important. I wanna do something different this time with your clothes. We have enough time. Choose. Poof or slim?" The cat smiled up at Fionna.
Fionna shrugged, "I don't know, slim?"
"That's what I was thinking! Hold on girl, this is gonna be awesome! It's just gonna scream FIONNA!" She hurried off to the closet, ruffling through some of the old things in there. Fionna left her to her work, her stomach growling for food. She wondered who was going to be coming with Gumball, and wondered if she would already know them.
Of course, the only other person she actually knew outside of the castle beside him was Marshall Lee, and she knew for a fact that that was not who was coming with Gumball. So the question still remained: Who was Fionna going to meet today?
Cake put the finishing touches on the outfit just as the trumpets sounded the arrival of Gumball. Fionna took one more look at herself before Cake pushed her towards the door. Long sleeves, light blue, embellished with a design like stars. The back was low, and the front was a high neck, but had a large shape cut at the chest, like a heart. The skirt was short in the front but long in the back, allowing anyone to see her small black flats. Simple, yet very beautiful. Everything was in a shade of blue, light and dark, and very form fitting. Little diamond sparkled out from where they were embedded into the fabric of the dress.
Her hair was left alone except for the lace and diamonds looped through it to keep it up and out of the way. It barely touched the floor as the cat rushed Fionna out of the room. She nodded, satisfied, and with Cake by her side, started out the door, and down the hallway. Around a corner, she found her parent, walking up to her room.
"Ah, Fionna! We were just about to come see you to the lounge area were our guests are waiting." Her Father beamed, his arm crossed over her Mothers. Her Mother gasped, eyes wide. "Why Fina dearest, your outfit! It's so beautiful! Who made it?!" Fionna pointed to Cake, who was bowed low, as was costume in the presence of the King and Queen. "My cat servant Cake did Mother. Isn't she amazing! She just made it today, for the special occasion."
Fionna smiled down at Cake, winking. Her Mother stepped forward, lifting her arm to get a good look at the stitching. "Very nice Cake. Keep this up, and I might have to make you make me some dresses." She chuckled, stepping back to the Kings side. Cake blushed and nodded. Fionna nudged her, pride swelling up in her.
"Well, shall we go meet the two? We have kept them waiting long enough." Fionna's Father took her arm and continued walking down the hall. They all chattered about different things that had been happening on the way to the lounge, and before any of them knew it, they were rounding the corner to the waiting hall.
Fionna easily picked out Gumball sitting in one of the chairs. She smiled, breaking from her parents to walk up to him. "Gumball! So glad to see you again, where is-" Fionna gasped, nearly screaming.
She stopped so quickly that Cake rammed right into her from behind. "Fionna, baby, what in the world?" The cat looked around at her face, but stopped when she saw her expression. Already, Fionna was shaking, her mind racing. A boy in the chair beside Gumball looked up, meeting her eyes, and just like her, he took in a sharp breath. A glass could be heard braking a little ways off, but Fionna barely noticed it.
All she knew was Marshall Lee was sitting in her castles lounge in a handsome tailored suit, looking dangerous and beautiful and exactly as she had left him: Perfect.
His eyes burned red, the recognition sharp in them. His mouth was wide open, a mask of pure surprise plastered on him. Gumball looked from one to the other, his eyebrows raised in question. Slowly, to everyone's surprise, Marshall Lee stood. He only took two steps towards Fionna, his chest falling down in a sigh that sounded like relief mixed with something else. Regret. Anger. Fionna couldn't tell.
His mouth moved, trying to make sound, but only one word came out. "Kristal."
Fionna's breath was knocked out of her. She stepped back, shifting away from his burning gaze. Gumball stood and looked at her again. "Kristal? No, Marshall, this is Fionna. Princess Fionna." He emphasized the title, trying to get his friends attention.
Marshall shook his head, "No Gumball. This is…"
His face contorted, anger seeping in. "Princess Fionna?" He looked directly at Fionna, the question directed to her. She swallowed the choking feeling in her throat. The entire time, Fionna's parents had been quiet, but now, of all the times, her Mother piped in with, "Kristal? What is this Kristal business? This is Fionna. The Lovely, Loyal, and Brave Princess of the Grasslands."
Fionna's mouth was dry as cotton, her eyes burning. Marshall cocked his head, "Gumball. This is the girl. This is the one that broke my heart." Fionna looked away from Marshall to Gumball, pleading with him to understand. He took one look at her and then realization lit up his face. "Fionna…" he whispered.
Fionna looked back at Marshall. "You have a lot of explaining," he said, baring his teeth and taking a step closer.
But before anything else could be said, Fionna had turned, and was running back down the hall.
