The Mystery of What

I strode through the halls of Voyager with ease, a feat I would not have thought possible when I first came aboard. Still my mind was off in it's wanderings and the young hybrid that seemed to accompany me everywhere was learning fast even without my help, so much so that he was reminding me where the halls dipped in height.

"Why are we going to the Doctor?" He asked, a nervous look spread across his face.

"I have questions." I mumbled.

"About what?" He asked as he jumped onto my back, only slightly surprising me as he used me as a mount. When I stopped to remove him, his face dropped into disappointment. "Fine, but no yelling 'giddy up'." I snorted as he climbed back onto me.

We entered the Sick Bay and the Doctor had a pleasant smile and laugh for us.

"Now there's a sight I don't think anyone could have foreseen." He smiled and handed the boy a pad with names on it. "Some more suggestions from the crew."

"Thank you Doctor." He sighed and sat on a medical bed.

"To what do I owe your visit today Vile?" The Doctor nodded to his office and we both entered and he closed the door. "Is this about him or you?"

"Me." I said. "The Black on their ship, it reacted the same way to Leto and myself."

"And?" He seemed confused.

"Leto's already exposed himself to it. So why is it reacting like that to me?" I pointed out.

"That is a good question." He brought up a few scans of my genetics. "I'll take this to the Xenobiologists on board, it shouldn't be to hard to figure out if you've been previously exposed."

"At this point I think we can just check off the 'yes' box on that question."

"When did you get a degree in xenobiology?" He smirked.

"Doc, we both know my genetics are fucked beyond reason. Beyond a simple hybridization of kainde and human. Something else was introduced to make me the way I am."

"Elaborate please."

"When the facehugger..." I rolled my eyes at the name still. "Got me I fell into water, The Black must have fallen with us, and there must have been a third life form, something aquatic..."

"You think The Black fused your genetics with xenomorph and an unknown third species?"

"Yeah..."

"Well given your description of this material anything could be possible." The Doctor sighed. "If it did, then there's a species the Xenomorph haven't been able to infect on that world."

"Which explains why the hive never expanded." I pointed out. "The Queen never shared any knowledge on such creatures with me, and she didn't tell me why we never expanded..."

"At the time I doubt questioning her rule was at all possible."

"No it wasn't." I grunted.

"But still, a species able to meet kainde in such a away as to cause them pause in expansion..." I shook my head. "Maybe my aggression isn't from the kainde."

"Maybe it's human." The Doctor smirked. "Remember Vile, your mental facilities were largely unchanged save for the organ that made you a slave to the hive. Everything else save for a few neural pathways rewired through your aggression centers are still mostly normal. If this blending did occur I would expect more alien pathways."

"I know..." I sighed. "I need one of those bald asshole giants to not try and kill us when we find them!"

"You think they'll know?" The Doctor seemed concerned.

"They might have some ideas." I grunted in annoyance. I then left, slightly more frustrated than when I had arrived.

Tuvok had just finished meditating when his door chime announced an arrival. The Vulcan, curious as he may have been knew his choices were limited as to who might be seeking him out. When he opened the door he was both surprised and pleased, though he went without expressing them as per his normal state, to find Vile furrowing his brow in what most would assume to be anger, but Tuvok had come to understand as contemplation.

"Good evening Mr. Vile." Tuvok motioned for Vile to come in and the large hybrid ducked into the room.

"I need your help Tuvok." Vile grumbled, his pride still making going to others more than a slight issue.

"I will try to help as I can." Tuvok nodded.

Vile fidgeted nervously, something that most crew members took as a bad omen. Still Tuvok was a Vulcan and knew Vile's instincts were reliable but he would have gone to the captain for anything involving ship security. It didn't take long for the Vulcan to deduce that Vile was working through his pride and words to ask a personal favor. He sat down while Vile paced and twitched, before finally he sat at a window.

"I need to remember the change." His voice was sullen and defeated and the Vulcan knew it was not an easy thing to ask.

"Remembering traumatic events can be dangerous, especially if you are not prepared."

"I know Tuvok, but I also need to remember my human life. I can't life with fragments." Vile's voice cracked, something that even though he did not outwardly present it, surprised the Vulcan. Vile was not prone to showing weakness outside of the sickbay.

"If I agree to help you, we must do this properly, with the Doctor's supervision."

"Thank you." Vile spoke after a few moments of silence. Then he went to leave.

"Mr. Vile." Tuvok stopped him before he left. "I trust that you will not allow a single failure stop you in your pursuit of your past."

Vile's smile was simple, and confident, with no sign of the predator that he usually was.

"Can't let anything hold me back, failure or success; past or present." With that Vile left.

Tuvok stood and then quickly went about readying himself for the next shift.

The bridge was silent as Harry Kim watched over from his station. The captain gave a yawn as she sipped her coffee and the first officer seemed to be drifting off to sleep every so often. Even the ensign that took over for Tom was showing signs of boredom.

Then his console beeped.

"Captain." Kim smiled. "Message from Star Fleet."

"Oh thank goodness." Captain Janeway smiled. "I'm on my way to Astrometrics."
