And I give you part two of Machiko's POV.
DISCLAIMER: I own nothing but my OCs, and I'm not making a profit.
The last straw snapped when Machiko's bitch mother hit Machiko for asking to go to the Academy -again- and Machiko couldn't hide the bruise from Aisako-sama in time. Aisako-sama found out they were hurting Machiko. Machiko was careful not to tell Aisako-sama it had happened before. Aisako-sama wouldn't be happy if she knew Machiko had been hiding things from her.
Machiko's mind was made up. When the villagers tried to take Machiko away from Aisako-sama, she declared it for all to hear. She even used the bad words Aisako-sama taught Machiko...Machiko would stand with Aisako-sama.
And if that meant doing what Aisako-sama had suggested…
A visit to see Sora-sama to discuss the plan was quickly arranged. He might not have told Machiko to do it…but she could tell he was happy she was doing it. He said it himself.
"I'm proud of you, Machiko-chan. I know it isn't an easy decision…choosing between your parents and Aisako-chan. But…I'm glad you chose her. Aisako-chan will someday be very important…and we must do everything we can to protect her."
"Aisako-sama is already important."
And so, when Machiko found herself crouched over her mother's body, she couldn't help but smile. Her father slept soundly, no doubt still under the effects of the drugs she had slipped into his drink during dinner, but her mother was wide awake. Machiko couldn't help it. She really couldn't. Was this how Aisako-sama felt when people trembled before her?
Machiko's Mother was nice and tightly bound, like a caterpillar in its cocoon...or a fly trapped in a web. Either way...Machiko's Mother was such a defenseless little bug compared to Machiko!
It was only fair, wasn't it? After all the times Machiko's Mother had hurt Machiko…
Machiko giggled, while her mother whipped her head back and forth, loudly whining and screaming through the gag. Machiko gently ran the tip of Machiko's kunai along her mother's throat, watching as blood welled up from where Machiko accidentally pressed a little too hard.
"You know what, Mommy?"
Mother was unable to respond, but Machiko didn't mind. She just kept on talking, and she was tired of hearing her mother's annoying, nagging screeching anyways. It would do for the woman to shut her trap from time to time.
"Machiko never really liked you. You and Daddy never accepted Machiko for who Machiko was. Machiko doesn't want to be a princess. Machiko wants to be a kunoichi. Machiko wants to protect Aisako-sama."
Machiko grinned and dragged the kunai across her mother's throat once more, making sure to nick the skin again. Machiko watched as little beads of blood appeared.
"That's another thing. Machiko heard a nasty, nasty rumor that Machiko's Mommy wants to have Machiko's Aisako-sama killed...like Aisako-sama was a sick dog or something."
Mother shook her head, tears streaming from her eyes as she screamed into the gag. Machiko's grip changed ever so slightly on the kunai.
"And that's the mistake you made. You see, Mommy..." At this the smile fell and my blue eyes became hooded, "I was fine with you ridiculing me for how I spoke. Or how I acted. But then...you just had to bring Aisako-sama into things, didn't you?"
The kunai slashed into my mother's stomach. Mother screamed in agony, still muffled by the gag. Wouldn't want to wake the neighbours, now would we? I decided that I loved the sound.
"Why did you do that? Why did you try to hurt Aisako-sama?" With each sentence, I stabbed the kunai into my mother, careful to avoid any main organs, just like Aisako-sama had taught me, "Aisako-sama is so kind to me. She trained me, she befriended me. She defends me and comforts me...she does everything you don't do, mother."
I changed the tone of my voice, because I loved the way it scared Mother. I made sure that I sounded super-cute for Mother.
"I love Aisako-sama. I'd do anything for her. And you knew that, didn't you? Hmm? Oh come now Mommy, tell Machiko-chan the truth?"
Mommy was making such a mess on the bed. She'd already pissed herself in fear, but now she was getting blood everywhere. But surprisingly, I didn't have a drop on me. Yet.
"Oh! Machiko knows now. Mommy was so jealous of how amazing Aisako-sama is, and how much Machiko loves Aisako-sama that Mommy tried to remove Aisako-sama. Baaad Mommy." I shook my head in shame. I was so disappointed in my Mother!
"Mommy is a murderer. A horrible, filthy murderer. Mommy is scum, aren't you?"
By now, I had noticed how my mother's eyes were getting a little glazed. She was losing too much blood...it would be best to end this soon, then. I took the kunai in two hands, and raised them over my head.
"And that, Mother dearest is why I have to do this. I'm sure you understand."
She shook her head desperately.
"Night night!"
Admittedly, I knew I was being dramatic...but...
I slammed my hands down, driving the metal through bone and into my mother's heart. I made sure to twist the blade around a little too. I pulled the blade out and drops of blood flew off in an arc, staining my hands and clothing.
Now there was blood on my clothes.
I slowly turned my head to the side, eyes landing on the second form on the bed. It was time to wake up my father.
Machiko had hoped to stay with Aisako-sama's family, since they took her to their home after having Kazuo heal her hands. Machiko was also very much aware that he had also tried to verify her mental state…but Machiko didn't really care what the results were. It had been funny though, seeing the way The Brother bristled at Machiko, scared she'd hurt Aisako-sama…and the way The Mother and Father checked on Machiko and Aisako-sama several times that night…just to be sure Machiko hadn't murdered Aisako. It was cute, as Aisako-sama would say.
Unfortunately, the village didn't want another child 'going bad' in Aisako-sama's home…so Machiko was taken away the next morning, and brought to the orphanage. However, as Machiko had hoped, she was also enlisted in the academy the same day, and would begin classes shortly.
Having spoken to Sora-sama before the 'accident' Machiko knew that Sora-sama would be approaching Aisako-sama with a deal…that Machiko would not be punished if she agreed to let Sora-sama teach Aisako-sama. Machiko knew Aisako-sama would agree.
The added bonus was that Sora-sama would be boosting Aisako-sama up a grade, and putting Machiko in the same class as well.
The kids at the orphanage feared Machiko. They didn't trust her. Looked at Machiko like she was a rabid dog. Machiko preferred to think she was a wolf. They were, after all…sheep, right? Even though they were so young, they had already gained the flock-mindset Aisako-sama discouraged.
They whispered mean things about Machiko behind her back, like they thought she couldn't hear.
As the days passed, Machiko would find them looking through Machiko's things, or trying to steal Machiko's food. Machiko made sure to teach them not to do that. The lady running the orphanage got very mad at Machiko for stabbing Suki with her fork. It wasn't Machiko's fault her hand got in the way. She shouldn't have been touching Machiko's food.
It surprised Machiko how easy it was to hurt other people. After the 'accident', it was like the small part of Machiko that felt bad for other people…kinda…shriveled up and died? Machiko wasn't sure…but she think she might have broken herself? Oops? Shame on Machiko?
"Aisako-sama?"
"Yeah?"
"Is Machiko Aisako-sama's friend?"
The moment Machiko asked this question, Machiko knew she'd done something bad. Machiko can see the guilt and pain flash across Aisako-sama's face. Even in the dark, Machiko can see how Aisako-sama's eyes danced around, looking for the right answer.
Then, a small smile graced Aisako-sama's face. It wasn't the wolf-grin she gave the sheep. It was the sort of smile the Loved Ones wished they could receive. Aisako-sama's real, kind smile.
"Machiko, you're my protector. It's your job to keep me safe and help me to stay alive...You're my protector...and that is so, so much more important that just being my friend."
The words Aisako-sama spoke made Machiko feel all warm and cuddly inside -it was almost like back when Mommy and Daddy still loved Machiko- as Machiko snuggled into Aisako-sama's side, safe and warm under the blankets.
Even the way Aisako-sama's voice soured at the word 'friend' still made Machiko happy. Machiko knew she shouldn't have asked Aisako-sama about being friends. Something told Machiko that even though it was impossible, someone else -another friend- had hurt Aisako-sama before the Demon did. Someone had done something to Aisako-sama that made Aisako-sama hate the word. Machiko knew that Aisako-sama would do anything to avoid using the word.
Protector. That was... The idea that Machiko was in charge of keeping Aisako-sama safe made Machiko so happy. It was Machiko's job to keep Aisako-sama alive- to guard Aisako-sama's life.
That was...That was all Machiko could ever want.
Machiko skipped along beside Aisako-sama, happy that she had decided to walk Machiko to her class. Machiko couldn't wait for the end of the day when Sora-sama would come and bump Machiko and Aisako-sama up into the same class. But Machiko didn't want to give herself away, so Machiko pretended to be reluctant to leave Aisako-sama's side- Well…not really pretend. Machiko didn't want to leave Aisako-sama alone at all.
"Does Aisako-sama have to leave Machiko here? Machiko does not think the other students will like Machiko very much..."
"Now, now, my darling Machiko-chan! You don't have to worry about them. Remember? Because I associate with you, means that you're better than them..." The confident smile Aisako-sama gave Machiko was a thing of beauty.
"And that means they aren't important?"
"Exactly. If they're mean to you, you shouldn't care, because they're opinions don't matter to us, correct?"
"Yes, Aisako-sama!"
"Good. I'll see you in a little while."
Machiko gave Aisako-sama one last hug before making her way into the classroom and taking the middle seat in the last row, where Machiko knew no one would be able to move without Machiko seeing it.
No one in Machiko's class tried to speak with her. In fact, Machiko watched with an amused grin as they all tried super hard not to look at Machiko at all. Like eye contact with Machiko would turn them to stone or something. Machiko wished she could do something like that…
After a little while, the teacher entered the room to take them to the greeting ceremony. 'Sunako-sensei' was a pretty lady with long dirty blond hair and green eyes. She looked delicate, but Machiko could tell from how she moved that she was dangerous. It didn't help that Machiko snuck into a council meetings with Sora-sama, and therefore knew that 'Sunako-sensei' wasn't a lowly chuunin. It did, however, make Machiko wonder just what a jonin –and a council member- was doing, pretending to be a school teacher?
She was a friend though. She protected Aisako-sama by voting against the council taking action against Aisako-sama. She thought Aisako-sama was just an innocent little girl. A sweet opinion…a little insulting towards Aisako-sama, but nicer than what most people thought…right?
She made everyone in the class introduce themselves and tell the class one thing about themselves. Machiko told the class she would eat them if they were sheep. Most of the class was confused. Only Sunako-sensei really understood.
Class was boring, and the day dragged on and on. Machiko was 'lightyears' ahead of the class. Some of the kids here didn't even know how to read. It was disgusting.
Machiko…might have made a funny face when she discovered the boy beside her couldn't read. He didn't take it well. Decided it was within his right to insult Machiko's Goddess.
Machiko thought it was within her right to introduce his face to the desk.
It happened quickly enough that no one actually saw Machiko weave her hand into his brown hair, grip it tightly and force his head down, into the desk. There was just a loud CRACK, followed by the boy screaming as tears ran down his face and an almost unrealistic amount of blood poured from the broken mess that had been his nose. No one could prove it was Machiko. And Machiko knew Sora-sama would stand by her decision to punish the boy for his disrespect. Sora-sama would get Machiko out of trouble.
Sunako let the class leave a few minutes early, likely so all the little kids in Machiko's class wouldn't be trampled in the hallway by all the other students when the bell rang. Machiko had seen how crazy the halls could get when she spied on-
Since Machiko knew where Aisako-sama's class was, Machiko rushed to meet her. The instant Machiko saw that head of wild red hair, and those too-old amber eyes, Machiko lunged forward, "Aisako-sama~!"
"Hello Machiko. How was your day?"
"Booooooooorrrrrrrrrriiiiiiiiiing!"
"And why was that?" Aisako-sama tried to pry Machiko's arms loose, but Machiko refused to let go. It was time to put all that training to good use! Longer hugs from Aisako-sama were always good.
"Because Machiko already learned all that crap!"
"Language."
"Oh. Sorry."
"It's fine. So, you already knew what they'll be learning?"
"Yup. Aisako-sama and Satoru-sensei taught Machiko lots and lots already, so Machiko asked if she could test into the next grade. Machiko will be getting the test tomorrow." The lie came easier than it should have. Machiko instantly felt disgusted in herself.
"Make sure to study."
"Yes Aisako-sama." Machiko and Aisako-sama began walking, and in an instant the hallway cleared. Machiko looked around, wondering where they all went (since there was no nearby exit), as well as where Sora-sama was, since he was supposed to pick up Aisako-sama after class.
Just as Machiko was about to tell Aisako-sama about the boy hurting his face on his desk, Machiko saw someone in the doorway behind Aisako-sama. For a brief moment, Machiko's brain didn't want to believe what she was seeing, but then the moment was over. Machiko's eyes narrowed as she stared hatefully at the filth.
Aisako-sama saw Machiko's expression and spun around to see. Machiko wished she hadn't. Actually, Machiko just wished he hadn't tried to leave the classroom. Why couldn't he have stayed away? Then again, he never did. He was always hanging around Aisako-sama. Trying to trap her somewhere so he could force her to pay attention to her. Didn't the Demon realize he blew his chance? He could have been Aisako-sama's right hand, but instead he decided to reject Aisako-sama's friendship. Wasn't it enough that he ripped off her leg? Why did he think he could get away with hurting Aisako-sama's soul like that?
Well. Machiko wouldn't let him hurt Aisako-sama anymore. Machiko stepped in front of Aisako-sama, so his empty, soulless eyes would stop staring at Aisako-sama. The Demon didn't seem to like Machiko's interference, because for a brief moment, he turned his foul gaze upon Machiko, glaring hatefully at her.
Then the moment was over, and the Demon looked back at Aisako-sama with this pitiful expression, like he was a puppy begging for scraps…not a Demon looking for sympathy from a Goddess.
Aisako-sama pulled me closer to her, until she was practically hugging me in an attempt to stop me from attacking the Demon. I couldn't help but look at her in annoyance. Didn't she understand he had to die for what he did to her? It was what the Loved Ones did to anyone who attacked Aisako-sama. If we didn't get rid of them, no one would learn their lesson, and more people would try.
"Let me go."
Aisako-sama paused for a moment, before her grip got tighter instead, "No. If I do, I don't know what you'll do."
Right. It must have thrown her off…the switch. I just couldn't help myself. Whenever I saw him I just…Somehow saying the words 'I hate you' sounded so much more personal than 'Machiko hates you'…
I didn't fight her hold, but I wanted to. He deserved to be ripped limb-from-limb just like he'd ripped off Aisako-sama's leg. I couldn't understand how she could stand to look at that disgusting monster, let alone try to protect him from me! "I'll kill him."
The Demon's sand began to act up. It roiled across the floor like the twitching muscles of a beast about to pounce. He wanted to attack us. He was going to hurt Aisako-sama. It didn't matter that his eyes were locked on me, face twisted into a mockery of 'fear'- like that Demon was even capable of feeling anything but bloodlust and sadistic joy-
"Okay Princess, calm your fucking tits!"
Machiko flinched, hearing the anger in Aisako-sama's voice. Machiko hated it when Aisako-sama was angry with Machiko. Machiko only wanted to keep Aisako-sama safe from the monster that had already hurt Aisako-sama once. Shouldn't people learn from their mistakes? Machiko had made a mistake, thinking the Demon wouldn't hurt Aisako-sama once. Machiko had ignored her fear, and because of that, Aisako-sama had lost her leg. But now Machiko knew better. Aisako-sama could not be left alone with him.
"Machiko doesn't want to," Machiko pouted, knowing it would help calm Aisako-sama down a little. Machiko did not like the way Aisako-sama's amber eyes were boring into Machiko's, with this look of distrust in them. Aisako-sama had to trust Machiko…Machiko would never hurt Aisako-sama, no matter how angry Machiko was!
It was a relief when Aisako-sama stopped staring at Machiko, and turned to watch the Demon instead. Machiko felt a sigh bubble out.
"Alright, what's the problem here?"
How could Aisako-sama not know? She clearly didn't trust the Demon anymore, so why was she asking such a (forgive Machiko Aisako-sama for the blasphemy Machiko is about to think) stupid question?
"That monster hurt Aisako-sama!"
"Who is she?"
The Demon spoke at the same time as Machiko. Machiko hated the way her voice blended with the traitorous Demon's. How dare it try and speak with Aisako-sama? It needed to learn its place. Machiko would answer its question. No need for Aisako-sama to lower herself to its level and speak to it.
"Machiko is Aisako-sama's bestest best friend!" Machiko lied, but once again, the Demon chose to speak over her.
"I never hurt her!" It said, which everyone there knew was an outright lie. Worse than the one Machiko had told. The prosthetic Aisako-sama was using spoke all the truth there was.
"Then why is Aisako-sama missing a leg!?" Machiko questioned it, hearing the rage in Machiko's voice.
Still, the Demon spoke over Machiko again. Its foul eyes roved over Machiko before it sneered at Machiko, speaking venomous words, "You're too loud to be her friend. She doesn't like little kids."
"You don't know anything about Aisako-sama! You hurt her!" Machiko said. Meanwhile, he cried, "And her leg wasn't my faul- It wasn't me!"
"Even if the leg wasn't your fault, you hurt her feelings!" Machiko snarled, as the Demon said, "I know everything about Aisako-ch- -san!"
"Oh yeah? What's her favourite colour?"
"I had to!" The Demon snapped, before answering Machiko's question. "And her favourite is blood colour."
He was correct. Of course he was correct. He'd spent years by Aisako-sama's side, luring her in, earning her trust…plotting just how he would kill her. Of course, the Demon's plans had been ruined by the betrayal of its own kin. Machiko thought there was something poetic about that…his betrayal was rushed by the betrayal of another?
Demon deserved it.
But. Just because it knew that Aisako-sama loved the vibrant ruby tones of freshly spilled blood didn't mean anything. His 'friendship' with Aisako-sama was a lie. An illusion. He didn't care about Aisako-sama. Not like Machiko did.
"Food!?"
"Fried tongue!"
"Parent?!"
"Taiki! Saki's terrifying!"
"Best friend?"
"ME!"
"Wrong answer!" Machiko wrapped her arms around Aisako-sama, nuzzling her head into Aisako-sama's shoulder, while glaring at the Demon, "Machiko is Aisako-sama's favourite. Aisako-sama hates your stinking guts."
Machiko could see the hurt in the Demon's eyes, and wondered just how he managed to fake the expression so well.
It almost made Machiko jealous. Buuuut not as jealous as he was, Because Machiko got to hug and hold Aisako-sama whenever Machiko wanted, and the Demon wasn't allowed to even touch her.
"As amusing as this is," A rough voice interrupted the argument, and Machiko, along with Aisako-sama and the Demon turned to see who dared interfere. Machiko was delighted to see Sora-sama and Satoru-sensei standing with two others. There was Sunako, and the man who had spoken was Aisako-sama's academy teacher 'Carl-sensei'. He continued, "we would appreciate it if you kids got your asses outside if you're going to yell. We also need to speak with you three anyways, so it would be great if you could wrap this all up?"
How come he was allowed to swear, but Machiko wasn't?
It hadn't said he was allowed to swear in the file about him Machiko found in Sora-sama's office
"Sensei!" Machiko cried running for Satoru-sensei.
Machiko thought it was fun to torture him with affection. Poor Satoru-sensei always got this confused look on his face when Machiko hugged him. It was revenge for how he'd laugh at Machiko and Aisako-sama whenever Machiko hugged her. Too late, Machiko realized Sunako was holding her arms out, like she expected Machiko to hug her instead. Machiko swerved to avoid her and continued on her path. Machiko was honestly a little alarmed that Sunako expected the hug to be hers…did Sunako always expect young children to throw themselves at her? After only speaking with her once or twice?
When Machiko glanced back to stare at the woman, Machiko noticed Aisako-sama staring at the woman with a strange expression on her face. It was torn between disbelief, amusement, and something else. Machiko was sure she'd seen it somewhere before…but not on Aisako-sama's face…
Satoru-sensei pushed Machiko out of the building through a side door, much to Machiko's displeasure. This meant that for a brief moment, Machiko was separated from Aisako-sama…who was left alone with the Demon. All Machiko could imagine was sand rising up and engulfing Aisako-sama…with no one there to help her.
The Demon walked out of the school, following after Machiko and the adults.
He was alone.
Machiko almost tore away and ran back inside, but before she could, something the Demon said earlier ran in Machiko's mind.
When Machiko accused him of hurting Aisako-sama's feelings…He had said…
"I had to!"
Machiko frowned, but was relieved when Aisako-sama exited the building, and decided to focus on pestering Satoru-sensei, since he was the only adult there that she was 'supposed' to know.
Machiko could have cared less for the class she was placed in. All the students were much taller and naturally physically stronger than Aisako-sama and Machiko. They stared at Machiko and Aisako-sama far too much as well. Machiko could feel and smell the fear rolling off them. Fear made people dangerous though, so Machiko could not bring herself to relax inside the classroom.
Carl-sensei failed to introduce himself properly, despite making Machiko, Aisako-sama and the Demon introduce themselves to the other students. He would have to remain Carl-sensei until Machiko learned his name. Oddly enough, the file Machiko had read on him hadn't included his name…Really the only personal notes in the file mentioned his frequent patronage at The Cuddly Cactus, and that he wasn't on speaking terms with his genin teammates or sensei.
Machiko was mostly glad that Sora-sama pulled Aisako-sama and Machiko out of some of their classes every day. He had special privileges to do so, saying that he was 'establishing a connection' with Aisako-sama so that he could 'instill a sense of loyalty to the village beyond personal bonds'.
The other members of the council ate the idea up, right out of his hands like the petting-zoo farm animals they were. Such cute little lambs.
Machiko was overjoyed to spend so much time with Aisako-sama and Sora-sama. Seeing the Loved Child being taught by her Guardian made the Maiden feel…so…
Sora-sama taught Aisako-sama and Machiko many, many things. Aisako-sama was becoming everything Sora-sama had hoped she would be. Machiko watched Aisako-sama absorb information like a sponge, and push herself to do what Sora-sama told her to.
She also watched Aisako-sama spend an alarming amount of time staring at Sora-sama's butt, but that's beside the point.
Sora-sama was patient with Machiko and Aisako-sama. He made sure Aisako-sama was ready to kill bunny rabbits and puppies. Made sure Aisako-sama wouldn't flinch when she had to kill a person. He taught her how to kill silently and quickly. There were very few big flashy jutsu for Aisako-sama- although he did teach Aisako-sama how to make mist...it was scary when Aisako-sama did it…particles of amber lined the lungs until the target couldn't breathe and they couldn't even see who was turning the very air around them into a weapon-
He taught Aisako-sama and Machiko how to use anything as a weapon. Dango sticks were improvised senbon. A plate thrown hard enough (chakra was scary) could take off a person's head. He even proved some of Aisako-sama's theories on how to kill someone with a spoon correct.
Aisako-sama could even out-talk the average politician if she had to. Machiko always found it strange when Aisako-sama stopped swearing and began politely speaking with double-edged words and verbal traps. Machiko didn't think Aisako-sama liked to use those lessons.
For Machiko…Sora-sama made Machiko train endlessly. Every time Machiko went to Sora-sama's lessons, she came back to the orphanage, or Aisako-sama's house with lead-limbs that burned when they moved. He made sure Machiko could use any kind of weapon and knew how to fight- knew how to fight while protecting someone…how to direct an enemy away from their targets, how to intercept attacks.
Sora-sama knew what he was doing when he trained Machiko and Aisako-sama. He knew exactly how to make Aisako-sama the assassin and 'shadow' Kage he wanted her to be. He knew how to make Machiko the perfect bodyguard he and Machiko wanted Machiko to be.
As the years went by, Machiko spent more time at Aisako-sama's house and with the other Loved Ones, than she did at the orphanage. Not that anyone cared if Machiko actually went back there. They just didn't want Machiko to be with Aisako-sama.
Eventually, Machiko learned to call Aisako-sama's home Machiko's home…and Aisako-sama's family Machiko's family. Machiko had a place to put her things in Aisako-sama's wardrobe, and slept in the same bed as Aisako-sama. Aisako-sama was there for Machiko whenever Machiko's stupid brain tried to scare Machiko while she slept…and Machiko did her best to calm Aisako-sama when she woke up screaming in the night.
Aisako-sama didn't do that very often. Usually she just talked in her sleep…things about a 'test drive' and something 'not real'…and her 'leg'.
Machiko went everywhere with Aisako-sama…to the Academy, to Aisako-sama's house, to Sora-sensei's office, and to the training ground with Satoru-sensei…welllllll…sometimes Machiko was separated from Aisako-sama. Every few weeks, Sora-sama would bring Machiko to the Temple…to speak with the Loved Ones and remind them that Machiko and the Loved Child loved them, just as much as the Guardian did. Aisako-sama still wasn't aware of her Loved Ones and their worship, so Machiko had to sneak away and say she was at the orphanage. It made Machiko feel gross…lying to Aisako-sama like that.
Machiko knew that the longer Machiko hid the truth from Aisako-sama, the more Aisako-sama was going to hate Machiko.
Other times…
Once- the first time Sora-sama took Aisako-sama down to The Alley, Machiko hadn't been allowed to come. In fact, Machiko wasn't allowed down below for over a year after Aisako-sama first went there. Machiko had been brimming with excitement when the day finally came-
The excitement didn't last long.
Machiko was well aware that there was something…not right about Machiko. Machiko's feelings didn't work properly…but even Machiko was scared of that place.
The beads were small and perfectly round. They seemed to glow in the sunlight, refracting orange and yellow light onto Machiko's fingers. Machiko couldn't help but run her fingers over each amber bead, almost in awe of them.
These beads were made with Aisako-sama's blood and tears. How long had it taken Aisako-sama to make them? To make her chakra will them into perfect spheres, save for the holes for them to be threaded?
And better still, each bead had been made in secret, in the moments when Machiko was not by Aisako-sama's side, so that when Aisako-sama gave them to Machiko, it was a surprise.
Machiko proudly wore it to the Temple the next time there was a gathering.
Shigeru-kun had been so, so jealous of Machiko! And the older Loved Ones all congratulated Machiko for having such a happy birthday- After all, how could it not be a Happy Birthday when the Loved Child herself had seen fit to make something like this for Machiko?
Machiko hopped up and down in place as she waited for Sora-sama to stop working on the paperwork on his desk. Sora-sama had so, so many responsibilities. Machiko was glad her only duty was to stand by Aisako-sama's side. Paperwork was stupid.
Machiko also didn't understand why Sora-sama, the Kazekage and the other council members never used clones to get their work done. It seemed like a no brainer…but maybe Machiko was just crazy?
Probably.
After a moment, Sora-sama put down his pen and rested his head on his palm as he stared at Machiko.
"Yes, Machiko-chan? What can I do for you today?"
"Machiko takes the genin test tomorrow."
Sora-sama gave an amused little chuckle, "Yes, you do."
"When Machiko passes, who will be on Machiko's team?"
"Confident, aren't you?"
"Of course. Machiko has to protect Aisako-sama, so Machiko has to pass this year. Aisako-sama will pass, and Machiko can't fall behind."
"True, true. I've pulled a few strings and whispered into Rasa's ear until he agreed with me. You'll be on a team with Aisako-sama and one other. Your sensei is…sympathetic to the Loved Child, so you will receive no problems from him."
Machiko beamed at Sora-sama. Machiko knew that not everyone in the council would have been pleased with such a decision. They thought that by separating Aisako-sama and Machiko, it would somehow make Aisako-sama less of a threat, or make Machiko more 'stable'…which was stupid because Aisako-sama was a goddess, so of course she was a threat if she had to be….and Machiko was perfectly sane, so that idea was moot…right?
Sora-sama chuckled again. He was always amused by how happy Machiko could get. He thought Machiko was cute. Like a puppy.
Again, Machiko personally thought she was more like a wolf…but everyone has their own opinions. At least Machiko wasn't a sheep like most of the village.
"The other council members think it's a good idea as well- they hope that by assigning your team the number 44, it will instill some bad luck."
Oh. Well. That solved the issue of what the council would do. A frown tugged at Machiko's face.
"They also plan for your team to be out of the village as frequently as possible, on the most dangerous missions available for your rank."
The frown grew. Machiko was…displeased. Very displeased. Machiko was used to the fact that many in the village wanted Machiko's Aisako-sama to die, but it still bothered Machiko. Aisako-sama was eleven years old. A 'child' in the eyes of most. Anyone other than Aisako-sama would be under protection after all the death threats and attempted assassinations.
But…because it was Aisako-sama, no one but Machiko, Sora-sama, the Loved Ones and Aisako-sama's family bothered trying to protect her. It wasn't right.
Why couldn't they see what the Loved Ones saw?
"Don't worry Machiko-chan. The teacher you've been assigned is quite fond of Aisako-sama –no matter how much he tries to deny it. He'll protect Aisako-sama to the best of his ability- And trust me, he is an elite."
Sora-sama wasn't one to compliment easi- Well. He wasn't one to honestly compliment someone easily. He'd lie to your face and tell you that you were a princess if it meant he could get something out of you. Machiko wasn't sure why he did that. Torture worked just as easily. And it was more fun too!
But. If Sora-sama said their Jonin-sensei was an elite…
Machiko gave Sora-sama a beaming grin.
Forty-eight hours later saw Machiko once again in Sora-sama's office. This time, Machiko was not beaming. This time Machiko was torn between all sorts of icky feelings.
Machiko had passed her exam, and gone home with Aisako-sama. Machiko had even gotten to eat cake!
The next day, Machiko had gone to the academy with Aisako-sama, but had to use the little girls' room. When Machiko got back, she spotted 'Sally Anne'. Aisako-sama seemed fond of the two girls, even though they didn't spend much time with Aisako-sama. Machiko thought it might be because Aisako-sama liberated them from 'the Blond Bitch', and it made her want to check in on them from time to time. To make sure they hadn't relapsed?
Machiko thought they had a lot of potential though. They weren't sheep. They didn't outright fear Aisako-sama, which was more than Machiko could say for the rest of the children their age. They even seemed to be fond of Aisako-sama in return?
Maybe Machiko could get someone to speak with them. Maybe they were future Loved Ones?
Machiko would like to see them at the Temple in the future. Aisako-sama would be pleased to see even more friendly faces.
When Machiko came into the classroom, Machiko didn't even bother looking at the sheep in the room. She just had to take her place next to Aisako-sama before someone else took it. What if they tried to stab Aisako-sama when the teams were being assigned?!
The Maiden took her job as the Loved Child's Shield very seriously.
Sitting beside Aisako-sama, Machiko noticed the way Aisako-sama's eyes roved the room. The way amber eyes narrowed at the familiar back of Shigeru-kun's head. Had they met? Had he said something?! He probably did, knowing him. It wasn't like Shigeru-kun really knew how to control himself…especially when Aisako-sama was involved. It was sort of embarrassing.
Machiko would have to speak with him the next time they met at the Temple.
Ren and Rina sat next to Machiko, meaning she had to squish up against Aisako-sama. Machiko was sure it annoyed Aisako-sama…but Machiko didn't mind. It was kinda like a hug. Machiko liked hugs.
Then Carl-sensei came in and yelled at the genin in the room before he started listing off the teams.
That's when the day went very, very bad.
Because yes, Machiko got to be on a team with Aisako-sama, as she had been promised…but the third member of Machiko and Aisako-sama's team was not a welcomed member.
The Demon had somehow snuck his way onto their team.
The Demon would be there, every day…every missions…staring at Aisako-sama with those vile sick-toad coloured eyes…probably dreaming up how he wanted to hurt Aisako-sama again…
And there was nothing Machiko could do to protect Aisako-sama. Not really. How could Machiko stop a Demon? Sora-sama hadn't taught her how to do that. He taught Machiko how to kill and torture…but…Demons? Nope.
Machiko tried not to brood about it, and managed to join Aisako-sama in the traditional teasing-of-Carl-sensei after their jonin-sensei failed to show up, leaving just Machiko, Aisako-sama, Carl-sensei and the Demon in the classroom. For a few brief seconds, Machiko focused on the fact that Carl-sensei might actually have a social-life, instead of thinking about the Demon.
But then the moment was over and Machiko, Aisako-sama and the Demon got sent out of the room. Machiko would have been relieved by this, if the Demon hadn't taken it upon itself to wrap its sand in Aisako-sama's clothing. The Demon followed Aisako-sama.
It was nothing new. Machiko often looked behind her and found the Demon standing there, staring at Aisako-sama with that stupid, thoughtful expression on its face. It didn't seem to understand that it blew its chance! It could have stood by Aisako-sama for all eternity, and instead it turned its back when Aisako-sama needed the support- LITERALLY! It turned its back and called Aisako-sama the M-word. Didn't it realize that he'd forced Aisako-sama to hate him? The Demon couldn't just expect Aisako-sama to take it back. The Demon had to earn Aisako-sama's attention and affection.
As it stood, Machiko wished Aisako-sama didn't have to stare upon its disgusting existence.
Machiko wished the Demon had never been born.
Even when it helped Aisako-sama steal the food cart…Machiko wished it hadn't. Machiko wished it had stayed away, like it was supposed to.
To see Aisako-sama hand out the food they'd stolen to the starving…it filled Machiko with even more awe and adoration than ever before. This was what Machiko wanted the world to see when they gazed upon Aisako-sama. Machiko wanted them to see the Being of Benevolence that was Aisako-sama.
Admittedly, Machiko wasn't sure she was…okay with how it all started. The first person Aisako-sama offered her kindness to. The old, homeless man.
There had been…Machiko…Machiko thought his face was familiar. Not someone she recognized…but Machiko thought he looked like someone she might know. Machiko was sure she'd remember someone with such strange yellow-green-white eyes. They were weird and kind of…glowy.
When Aisako-sama first offered him food, he had seemed suspicious of Aisako-sama, but the expression quickly changed as Aisako-sama and the geezer spoke.
"It isn't poisoned or anything."
"Can I believe that? You're that 'monster' girl, aren't you?"
Machiko had to stop herself from gasping. What a rude old geezer! Who the hell did he think he was? He doubted Aisako-sama's honesty, and then called her the M-word?!
"Am I a Monster?" Aisako-sama gave a tilt of her head. Machiko always thought Aisako-sama was adorable when she did that. Machiko wished she wasn't standing behind Aisako-sama, so that Machiko would be able to see Aisako-sama's expression. Machiko guessed she'd be raising an eyebrow or something.
"That's the question, isn't it?"
"What do you mean?"
The man took the food Aisako-sama once again offered to him. Machiko was much amused. Wasn't it funny how now that they were talking, the man was too distracted to think about Aisako-sama poisoning him?
"Are you a Monster? What makes anyone a monster? It's true you cause people to feel fear, but so do I. They look at me, and they're scared I might attack them for their money or their food. They look at you and they see the 'Loved Child' from all the wild tales that have sprouted up about you. Does that mean we're both monster, simply because we scare people?"
Machiko tried very hard not to react. The 'Loved Child'. The way he said it…he knew. He knew about the Loved Ones and the following gathering in Aisako-sama's name. Machiko could feel the cold eyes of the Demon staring directly at her. He was watching…knew something the man was saying was bothering Machiko.
Machiko couldn't let the Demon know about the Loved Ones. He'd surely slaughter them all, if it meant Aisako-sama would be less protected.
"There are stories about me?"
"Oh yes. Many fear you…you and that boy behind you have become the Boogeymen of Suna. Even your blond friend is starting to gain her own tales…I heard an interesting one about her murdering her parents in cold blood…" The old man's eyes shifted to Machiko. Machiko tried not to glare at the look he gave Machiko. He knew what he was doing. He knew how close he was to spilling secrets that weren't his, "Of course, in your case, while a majority of the tales cast you as some demon in the form of a human child, there are a small handful that cast you in quite a different light."
"What sort of light?"
A light Aisako-sama wasn't supposed to find out about yet! Especially not from creepy old guy in the Red Light District! Aisako-sama was supposed to find out from Sora-sama in the comfort of a familiar place…
"The sort of light that gains followers."
The Demon's attention seemed to focus in on the conversation. Like he couldn't believe the idea…or maybe he believed the idea, and knew what it meant for him…It meant that many, many people would stand in between him and his plans to hurt Aisako-sama again.
For her part, Aisako-sama didn't seem to believe the old man. Machiko could see it in the tilt of Aisako-sama's head and the way her shoulders sat,
"There are…whispers…about you," the old man continues, leaning in and speaking in a conspiratorial tone. The words remind Machiko of when she was very small…overhearing hushed conversations in alleyways and quiet corners, "Little talks people have…little talks about the 'Loved Child' and how the people in Suna don't understand you…Don't realize just how…special you are. Little talks about the people who dare to attack you…and the people protecting you. They're quite fond of your Guardian. He's quite the charismatic, and pretty good at recruiting more followers. You would be surprised as to just how many people actually support you, my friend."
"Why would they do that?" Something guarded appeared in Aisako-sama's voice.
Machiko flinched. The Demon's head snaps to look towards Machiko at the movement. This wasn't good. The Demon was watching, and Aisako-sama was panicking. Sora-sama was right. Aisako-sama shied away from kindness. Sheep weren't kind unless they were trying to poison Aisako-sama.
"Because you aren't a Monster."
The look in the man's eyes was familiar to Machiko. Machiko knew that look. That man saw Aisako-sama now. He saw that she was no Monster. She wasn't threatening him, or trying to kill him. The food he was nibbling on was safe to eat…and she'd willingly given it to him. Aisako-sama wasn't even snapping at him. She was just…conversing. Treating him like an equal, without fear…Aisako-sama didn't think he was a Monster, and he didn't think Aisako-sama was a monster.
The old man laughed at Aisako-sama's expression, "I've never really believed all that crap about you being a 'Monster'. Load of bull. I mean, we're a shinobi village. You'd think they'd be used to strange shit going on."
Before Aisako-sama can speak, the old man dismisses himself from the conversation. But not before calling over his shoulder, "Buuut…I think I'll believe some of the other stuff."
"What stuff?" Machiko questions the man. Machiko wondered if he's a new Loved One, and didn't know the rules about speaking to Aisako-sama about the Loved Ones. Machiko tried to warn him off with her voice. He knew he'd gotten away with saying far, far too much already. Any more and Sora-sama was sure to be angry with Machiko for letting him say this much.
"The stuff about the kind, Loved Child. After all, she's going around handing food out to the homeless!"
"So…I have a cult?"
Yes. Yes Aisako-sama. You have a cult. But Machiko and the other Loved Ones preferred to think of themselves as Aisako-sama's 'awaiting extended family'. After all, if there was one thing Machiko learned from Aisako-sama and the Parents, it was that family wasn't just about blood. It was something you patched together…if Machiko and Takeo's presence in their home was anything to go by.
Aisako-sama's discussion with the old man seemed to put Aisako-sama in a good mood. It made her relax and care less that the Demon was on their team, and that they'd been given an unlucky number.
But the conversation had also made Aisako-sama very, very curious. Machiko could see the questions in Aisako-sama's eyes. Machiko knew Aisako-sama would not begin actively searching for the Loved Ones. Not yet. She'd keep her eyes and ears open though. Machiko would have to be more careful not to let anything slip.
As Machiko, Aisako-sama and the Unholy Worm walked down the street, Aisako-sama continued to stop and speak with people. She'd hand them food, and the Sheep would look at her scared, confused and torn. Should they eat the food, or save themselves the risk?
Machiko walked a few steps behind Aisako-sama, so that not one (Demon included) could attack Aisako-sama from behind, "Machiko is not surprised that Aisako-sama is loved by many people."
The filthy worm thought he had a right to speak in Aisako-sama's presence, and tainted the auditory tranquility with his voice, "He didn't say she was loved by many. He said there were a few."
Machiko spun on her heel, walking backwards to hiss at the Demon and put it in its place, "Shut up! You don't know anything. Machiko knows that Aisako-sama is very kind and powerful. Everyone should respect Aisako-sama."
"Love and respect aren't the same."
"Neither is fear! Machiko doesn't see that stopping you from hurting people with your dirt." Machiko wished her words could be knives that pierced him, "Not even your own family loves you- You've scared them off!"
Sand lunged at Machiko, and Machiko was quick to dodge the wave. It was a warning, not an actual attempt. Aisako-sama appeared to be too deep in thought to notice. Something Machiko was grateful for. Machiko didn't want Aisako-sama to think she had to be involved with this. The less she interacted with the Demon the better.
Machiko glared at the Demon for a moment longer, confirming that the wave of sand he'd sent at her was the only one. Machiko didn't want to be sneak attacked. When Machiko knew Machiko was safe from attack for the moment, Machiko went back to watching Aisako-sama.
Aisako-sama was talking to yet another homeless person, and Machiko could see the way the teenager's eyes changed. His eyes went from glaring hatefully at Aisako-sama, so staring at her in gratitude. After all, she'd given him his first meal in who-knows-how-long. How could he not be thankful?
So, so many of them were grateful, and knew they owed the Loved Child. Machiko knew she could expect them to find their way to the Temple after this. It just took one action for the worthy to see Aisako-sama in the true light.
And when the food was handed out and Aisako-sama was done for the day, Machiko, Aisako-sama and the Demon all went their separate ways. Machiko had much to discuss with the Guardian.
As Machiko said… Machiko was torn between lots and lots of feelings.
"Now Machiko-chan, don't look so angry with me." Sora-sama offered an awkward little smile as he stared at Machiko from across his desk.
"The Demon."
Sora-sama winced, "Ah…yeeessss, Gaara-kun is the third member of your team."
"Team 44."
"Yes…Team 44. Like I said the other day Machiko-chan, the Council wants to put Aisako-sama in as much danger as they can. They know she is no longer on good terms with the Demon, so of course they'd put them together. As for your team number? They're desperate…so they're resorting to superstition if they have to." Sora-sama gave Machiko a shrug, "Now. What's this my Eyes tell me about Aisako-sama feeding the hungry?"
Machiko grins, "Aisako-sama and Machiko stole from the fat foodman…the filthy Demon helped…and Aisako-sama stopped in front of a homeless man and gave him food! Then Aisako-sama gave food to everyone! Aisako-sama showed them how kind Aisako-sama can be! Machiko is sure there will be more Loved Ones soon."
Sora-sama smiles, "That's fantastic news hear. It's nice to see Aisako-sama finally letting out that side of her character. The public needs to see who she really is sooner rather than later….Now. My Ears tell me that Aisako-sama had an…interesting conversation."
Machiko shifted awkwardly, not looking into Sora-sama's eyes. What if he was angry at Machiko for not silencing the man? Machiko didn't want Sora-sama to be angry with her. An Angry Sora-sama was a bad, bad thing.
Machiko didn't want to go to the Alley.
"The old man mentioned the Loved Child, and that Aisako-sama was not as hated as Aisako-sama thinks. He knew about what Machiko did to Machiko's parents. He said that Aisako-sama wasn't a Monster, and that he was inclined to believe the stories of the Loved Child." Machiko quickly reported, "Machiko wanted to stop him, but Machiko was being watched by the Demon, and it would have been suspicious if Machiko interrupted Aisako-sama's conversation…Machiko didn't know what to do. But it didn't seem like Aisako-sama completely believed him. She's curious about whether or not she had a 'cult', but doesn't seem willing to actively look? You said Aisako-sama would have to find out sooner or later…maybe now's the time?"
Sora-sama leaned back in his seat, looking thoughtful.
"Perhaps. We'll see what she discovers on her own. If she starts demanding answers…"
This was it. Aisako-sama would learn the truth soon.
Carl-sensei was still sensei. Machiko was…surprised? Machiko knew Sora-sama and Carl-sensei were acquainted…but it was surprising to discover Sora-sama respected Carl-sensei enough to entrust Aisako-sama's official training to him. And her protection. Her life.
Machiko would still be on guard.
Even more surprising was what Aisako-sama wore when she came to the training ground. Machiko had not known Aisako-sama still owned that ratty thing. Why hadn't she thrown it out? Wasn't it a painful reminder of the Demon's betrayal?
But there Aisako-sama was…wearing it proud as day.
Machiko didn't understand.
It did look nice with Aisako-sama's eyes, though. Machiko wondered how many hours the Demon gazed into Aisako-sama's eyes…long enough to remember the shade and find something that nearly matched them.
Unfortunately, the Demon recognized the robe. Machiko couldn't stand the way he stared at Aisako-sama.
It was a good thing Aisako-sama couldn't stand it either.
Plus it was funny listening to Aisako-sama yell at the Demon during the D-rank missions Carl-sensei gave the team. It wasn't like it had feelings for her to hurt anyways.
Machiko stared at the other team in the room. The Demon's human siblings were present, staring at Aisako-sama and the Demon with obvious fear. Meanwhile, Shigeru-kun was vibrating with excitement at the prospect of being in the same room as Aisako-sama.
Aisako-sama didn't seem to want to approach them, but Carl-sensei herded Machiko, Aisako-sama and the Unholy Worm
Machiko watches with growing frustration as Shigeru-kun reaches out and grabs Aisako-sama's hands. He wasn't supposed to be doing that. Loved Ones were currently forbidden from intentional physical contact with Aisako-sama unless given permission by Aisako-sama or Sora-sama. If Shigeru-kun that Machiko was going to let Shigeru-kun touch Aisako-sama's hands without some sort of protest-
The sand the Demon had woven into Aisako-sama's clothing visibly tugged, trying to pull Aisako-sama away from Shigeru-kun.
Machiko wasn't sure who Machiko was hissing at. All Machiko knew was that Machiko was not happy with the Demon (for using his filthy dirt on Aisako-sama) or with Shigeru-kun (for breaking rules and causing Aisako-sama distress, when he knew he wasn't supposed to even be talking to Aisako-sama).
He kissed Aisako-sama's hands, despite the way Aisako-sama tried to yank them away, "A pleasure to formally meet you, Aisako-sama."
Machiko cut off her hiss. At least he was still being respectful…even if he was blatantly over-stepping his current status by touching Aisako-sama. If she gave him permission, it would have been fine…but this was against Aisako-sama's wishes…
Aisako-sama frowned at him, "Yeah...Don't call me Aisako-sama. Ever. It's weird coming from you."
Machiko could see the way Shigeru-kun's face fell for the briefest instant.
Machiko couldn't really find it in Machiko to blame him. Shigeru-kun had been raised to love Aisako-sama…wasn't it sad, loving someone with all your heart, only for them to not even know who you were? This was why Machiko didn't get invested in things like that. Respect is fine. Adoration, fine. Friendship, great. Useful even. Loyalty- definitely. Love? No thanks.
"My name is Shigeru, and my family and I are truly devoted."
Machiko resisted the urge to face-palm like Aisako-sama does whenever someone does something extraordinarily stupid in Aisako-sama's presence. What the fuck was Shigeru thinking?!
"Um...what?"
Shigeru-kun, briefly, looked confused by the question. Machiko understood he was excited to see Aisako-sama…but surely he remembered she wasn't aware of the Temple yet…right?
"Oops. I forgot how protective the Guardian could be."
"The who?"
"Oh dear, you really don't know anything about-"
Machiko had had enough. Machiko needed to shut Shigeru-kun up before he ruined everything. Slipping in between Aisako-sama and Shigeru-kun, Machiko yanked Aisako-sama's hands free from Shigeru-kun and glared at him, "Machiko is wondering your intentions for Aisako-sama."
Shigeru-kun blinked at Machiko, like he hadn't realized Machiko was there in the first place. He gave Machiko a smile, "Why, Machiko-sama, my only intention is to express my love for the L- For Aisako-san."
Machiko narrowed her eyes at Shigeru-kun. From the corner of Machiko's sight, Machiko could see Aisako-sama staring at Shigeru with a suspicious look on her face. Great. He'd made Aisako-sama curious. With her eyes, Machiko expressed her desire for Shigeru-kun to shut his trap, as well as remind him that Machiko and Shigeru-kun weren't supposed to know each other, "Machiko does not think she believes you. Machiko has not seen you before."
"I've been there. I'm just hard to notice when I'm in the presence of someone as radiant of Aisako-san..."
Machiko had spent years standing beside Aisako-sama. Machiko had spent years watching the minute ways Aisako-sama's features would arrange themselves with every thought that passed through Aisako-sama's head. And it was because of this that Machiko could literally see what Aisako-sama was thinking. She was creeped out, embarrassed…and she was feeling betrayed. Aisako-sama knew that Machiko was hiding something from her.
Machiko swore her blood turned to ice. Aisako-sama knew. Aisako-sama knew Machiko was a lying liar, and she'd never trust Machiko again. Machiko had ruined everything! Well- No. Shigeru-kun had ruined everything…but he was stupid and in love. Insane, clearly.
Machiko was the responsible one here!
M-maybe Machiko could distract her? Keep her occupied until Machiko could speak with Sora-sama and find out what to do now?
"Aisako-sama is quite beautiful." Machiko said, nodding along with Shigeru-kun's opinion of Aisako-sama's radiance. If Machiko could get Shigeru-kun started, he'd never stopped extolling the beauty of the Loved Child…and Aisako-sama would be temporarily distracted from the betrayal of her closest companion! Yay.
"I know! How anyone could be foolish enough to call her ugly, I have no clue. Just look at her!" Shigeru nodded eagerly, and his hands reached out to caress Aisako-sama's face, "Her face is that of an angel, the smile of a warrior queen, the heart of a saint, hair like rose petals-"
Some horrible sadistic part of Machiko took great joy in the uncomfortable look on Aisako-sama's face as she tried to look anywhere but at Shigeru-kun, who continued to rain compliments upon her. Of course, Machiko could also see the smirk on Shigeru-kun's face, and knew Shigeru-kun was amused by how shy Aisako-sama really was when it came to positive interactions.
Eventually, the Demon took it upon himself to intervene. A wall of sand surged upwards, cutting in between Shigeru-kun and Aisako-sama. Machiko could see the relief in Aisako-sama's eyes at the separation. The relief vanished when sand wrapped around Aisako-sama's wrist and the Demon dragged her to Carl-sensei. Machiko could feel a growl bubble up inside, but she did her best to keep it in. Didn't want to provoke the Unholy Worm when it was in contact with Aisako-sama.
"Sensei, I believe we have wasted enough time. It would be best if we got our missions and left."
Carl-sensei pouted and sighed, making Machiko giggle as he spoke, "Fine. Just when she was starting to really squirm too..."
The Demon yanked Aisako-sama towards the mission desk. If Machiko didn't know any better, Machiko would think the Demon didn't like Aisako-sama being around Shigeru-kun. Was it…jealous?
Hearing the sound of the Demon's sand moving again, Machiko looked back towards Shigeru-kun. The look of comical disappointment on his face drew a giggle from Machiko. He looked so cute and heartbroken! Like a kicked puppy.
Then, after a second, he cheered up and beamed happily as he called after Aisako-sama, "Aisako-san! I'll come hang out with you once you're done with you mission, okay? Just call me name and I'll-"
The Demon's human brother smacked Shigeru-kun over the head and harshly whispered, "Dude, if you want the girl, don't tell her you'll always be in hearing range. That's creepy."
Machiko couldn't help giggling again.
The C-rank mission isn't as fun as Machiko had hoped. Yes, Machiko got to spend time with Aisako-sama. Yes, Machiko didn't have to see the villagers, because they were no longer in the village. Yes, Machiko even got to kill the bandits that attacked Machiko's team, but the entire mission was ruined by a number of things.
It started with Sora-sama appearing at the orphanage. He came bearing several pieces of news. The first, was that Machiko-chan would be receiving an apartment in the depths of The Alley when Machiko returned from the mission. It wasn't a good thing. Machiko liked The Alley because Sora-sama lived there, and Sora-sama would let Machiko stay there after training sometimes. Machiko didn't like the idea of living in The Alley, however, because it was a very long ways from Aisako-sama's house. The cave network was vast and Machiko hadn't gotten access to one of the closer by entrances yet.
The next piece of news Sora-sama told Machiko was that Sora-sama would be taking Aisako-sama to the Temple when Machiko and Aisako-sama returned from their mission. Apparently, Aisako-sama had begun asking for answers, and Sora-sama would not deny her anymore. Sora-sama was going to tell Aisako-sama all about the Loved Ones and the story about how Aisako-sama came back from the dead.
Machiko felt sick at the thought of it. This was the end. Aisako-sama would hate Machiko forever.
When Machiko's team was leaving for their mission, Machiko made sure to be super happy, and enjoy ALLLLLLL the time Machiko could have with Aisako-sama. The first night they camped out, Machiko got to curl up beside Aisako-sama, just like always. Aisako-sama had even silently told-off Carl-sensei and the Demon when they gave Aisako-sama and Machiko weird looks.
A short distraction (in the form of ridiculously weak bandits attempting to kill them) later, Machiko's team arrived in the village and set up for the night in the Inn. It was supposed to be a time to relax and 'bond' as a team but no one on the team found it particularly relaxing.
Aisako-sama was paranoid about the villagers here. They were too kind. They smiled at Machiko, Aisako-sama and even the Demon! Other kids tried to speak with Machiko, and the adults cooed at Aisako-sama like she was some cute and fluffy kitten or something! They gave Machiko cookies! Something was horribly wrong with that place...but at least by the end of the mission, they'd begun acting like normal people?
While they stayed at the Inn, Machiko had been hoping they could talk more about the fight with the bandits. Machiko wanted to wanted to do nothing more than marvel at the memory of the crystalline carnage Aisako-sama had reaped upon her unfortunate opponent. And maybe fondly remember the sound of fracturing femurs?
But then the Demon had to ruin the mission once again.
"I've decided."
"Decided what?"
"I've decided that I'll be the one to kill you."
The stupid, filthy, pointless Demon had to go and threaten Aisako-sama. No subtly to it, not dancing around it. Not even any sort of argument leading up to it. The Demon just opened its foul maw and promised to kill Aisako-sama.
I couldn't have that…now could I?
Honestly…it doesn't matter that the Demon is the current Kazekage's son. It doesn't matter if there's still some tiny, minute part of Aisako-sama that treasures that thing. It doesn't matter.
It said it was going to kill Aisako-sama. My Goddess. The only person in the world who had accepted me, with all my quirks. The Demon had decided to hurt her. To kill her. I couldn't let that happen. It was my job. Not only my job as the Maiden, or the job given to me by Sora-sama…it was the job given to me by Aisako-sama all those years ago…
So…no, it doesn't matter if Aisako-sama doesn't want it dead, or if the Fourth Kazekage spawned the Demon in the first place.
I'm going to kill it someday, all the same.
"Shit!"
The exclamation instantly put Machiko on edge. Aisako-sama's voice had clearly been distressed.
"'Sora' wants us in the Alley!"
Oh.
It was time already? Machiko had hoped Sora-sama would wait a few more days…but…orders were orders.
Aisako-sama tried to lead the way to the Alley, but the Demon stopped her by wrapping sand around her wrist. The Unholy Worm…the Betrayer…began questioning Aisako-sama, like the Demon had the right to interrogate Aisako-sama. He wanted to know about Sora-sama and the Alley.
Machiko wanted to get rid of the Demon…find some way to send it away (or kill it), so that Machiko and Aisako-sama can get to the Alley quickly. The idea of making Sora-sama wait sent shivers down Machiko's spine. Sora-sama would know if Machiko and Aisako-sama dallied at all. It was likely Sora-sama had already been told that Aisako-sama and Machiko were done reporting to the Kazekage.
Aisako-sama clearly didn't want to make Sora-sama wait either, so rather than get rid of the Demon, Aisako-sama brought it with Machiko and Aisako-sama to the Alley.
The moment Sora-sama saw the Demon, Machiko knew he was not pleased. But then…a certain…light shone in Sora-sama's eyes. He'd had an idea… Found a way to work with the situation.
Aisako-sama and Machiko stood at attention while Sora-sama asked for a briefing on Machiko and Aisako-sama's C-rank mission. Aisako-sama tried to avoid revealing everything, but Machiko knew that Machiko had to tell Sora-sama about the Demon's threat against Aisako-sama.
At least Sora-sama would take it seriously. Sora-sama would side with Machiko. Maybe Sora-sama could find a way for Machiko to smite the Demon?
But Sora-sama didn't take it seriously…not at all. Instead he only cooed at the news. Machiko could admit that the way the Betrayer made his declaration…'I've decided that I'll be the one to kill you'…right after learning that Aisako-sama still had assassination attempts on her life…
Machiko thought it sounded like the Demon meant something completely different. It almost sounded…like the Demon wanted to protect Aisako-sama. There was no doubt in Machiko's mind how some of the Loved Ones would interpret it.
The demon didn't seem to realize that it no longer had a place by Aisako-sama. Machiko was Aisako-sama's protector now. The Demon had blown his chance.
Machiko had worn the outfit several times before, and knew exactly where Mikasa usually kept it. Machiko visited Mikasa often enough that Mikasa didn't even feel the need to check on Machiko, to make sure Machiko wasn't trashing the place.
Which Mikasa used to do. Sometimes.
The pants and shirt were both pure, pure white, unlike anything Machiko had ever seen before. The pants were loose at the bottom, and years of wearing shinobi clothed made Machiko want to get some string or bandages and find some way to tighten the legs around Machiko's ankles. The vest Machiko had to wear over the white clothing was a bright blue, like the sky. It was a thin material, barely weighing anything. The 'vest' was short at the back (ending just under Machiko's butt), but the two halves that made the front were longer, ending near Machiko's knees. Again, the loose, trailing clothing bothered Machiko. Whenever Machiko wore the vest, Machiko could only think of how, in a fight, someone could grab the long ends and use them to pull Machiko close, and then eviscerate Machiko.
Machiko hated the outfit.
But Machiko wore it…because Sora-sama thought it looked nice for the Maiden to wear. Not too girly, but not scary shinobi clothing.
At least the shirt and pants were made of a durable material?
Aisako-sama could be meeting the Loved Ones. Machiko would have to be on guard, in case one of the Loved Ones was only pretending to love Aisako-sama. If anyone tried, Machiko would beat them up! Rawr.
After Machiko fixed her hair, retying it in low pigtails, Machiko stepped out of her dressing room.
The Betrayer stood where he had when Machiko had left the room. Sora-sama was off to another corner of the room, looking at some of the materials there. Machiko wondered if he was planning something for the Demon to wear if it ever accompanied Machiko and Aisako-sama to the Temple again. Machiko hoped it did not…but if it behaved itself at the Temple, it wouldn't be Machiko's place to tell it to stay away anymore…
At one time, the Betrayer had been loved just as much as Machiko was. He had been, back then, considered Aisako-sama's…counterpart. Some of the Loved Ones…thought that maybe Aisako-sama and the Betrayer were meant to fall in love. That because Aisako-sama was older inside, she might have already been in love with the Betrayer, and that was why she took the Betrayal so badly.
Machiko thought that was garbage…but Sora-sama seemed to think there was some truth in it. Sora-sama told Machiko that Sora-sama's ears had overheard the Betrayer and Aisako-sama discussing love, moments before the Demon's Kin tried to kill Aisako-sama and the Betrayer. Machiko didn't think that meant anything. Aisako-sama wasn't the type to fall in love. And even if she was, Aisako-sama wouldn't fall for the Demon. He was too young for her. Aisako-sama was older on the inside, and that meant anyone Aisako-sama's age was too young for her tastes.
Aisako-sama wasn't a cradle snatcher, thank you very much.
"Ah, Machiko-chan! As pretty as ever," Sora-sama said when he noticed Machiko was back from getting dressed. He crossed the room to get a better look at Machiko's face and hair, making sure there was nothing wrong with Machiko's appearance, "You and Aisako-sama will be the prettiest girls there."
The Demon tilted his head at Sora-sama, "Aisako…sama?"
"Hm?"
"Why do you call her 'sama' when she isn't here?"
"There's something special about Aisako-sama, don't you think, Gaara-kun?" Sora-sama asked in a light tone, "Something more than what should be. Aisako-sama isn't just a smart little girl. I think you and your…companion both know it."
The Demon said nothing.
"Something in her eyes. You spend enough staring into them, don't you, Gaara-kun? There's a secret in them, isn't there? Something no one else on this planet knows. Something even bigger than how she came into this world."
Still, the filth refused to respond to Sora-sama. It just looked at Sora-sama with a blank expression and something horrible in its eyes. Machiko would never say it out loud, but Machiko wondered if it was a good idea to speak with the monster at all. What if something Sora-sama said to it ended up provoking it?
"Whatever it is, I can respect her for it. It's what makes her eyes seem so old. It weighs on her, ages her beyond the years her body has lived. It's something she's always had though…so it was something she was born knowing. Whatever it is she knows, it's something that would likely crush a lesser man. Secrets are heavy things."
The Betrayer is silent for another moment, still staring into Sora-sama's eyes. Finally, it tilts its head, listening to its 'mother'. Then, the Demon's eyes moved towards Machiko, and Machiko knew whatever he would say would not be pleasant, "Mother says the only special thing about her is she's an enormous bi-"
Machiko would not let the filth finish that sentence. Even though Machiko knew the Betrayer was only saying that to get a reaction from Machiko. It worked, that's for sure.
I would fucking smite him.
Before I could lunge and strangle the life from the Unholy Worm's scrawny throat, Sora-sama placed a hand on my shoulder. Machiko froze, not daring to even breathe.
"Now, now. Machiko-chan. We wouldn't want to cause a scene in Mikasa-san's store, now would we? Think of all the fabrics you'd make a mess of. And you wouldn't want to ruin Aisako-sama's special day, right?" Machiko wasn't stupid enough to think that Sora-sama was making a suggestion. Machiko was a 'wise child' after all.
It didn't matter either way how Machiko was going to respond to Sora-sama's 'suggestion'. Machiko felt the presence of Aisako-sama draw near, and hurried to calm herself. Machiko didn't want Aisako-sama to worry about Machiko getting into a fight with the filth.
If Machiko thought Machiko was unhappy with the situation, before, Machiko's displeasure only grew when Sora-sama had to threaten the Betrayer to behave in the Temple. Normally, Machiko would have relished in finding something to make the Demon bend to her will…but the thing Sora-sama threatened?
It was the one thing Machiko would never hurt.
Why was it that the only weakness the Betrayer seemed to have, was Aisako-sama? If the Betrayer betrayed Aisako-sama…why did it still care?
After a short walk, Machiko, Aisako-sama, Sora-sama and the Betrayer were at the Temple. Machiko still didn't want to bring it with them, but Machiko didn't really have a place to speak. Machiko had no control over the decisions made by Sora-sama or Aisako-sama. If they asked Machiko's opinion, Machiko would surely give it though.
It seemed to behave well enough when it was in the Temple though. Machiko didn't see any sign of it marking its territory, or any obviously aggressive behavior. It kept leaking sand everywhere, but that seemed to be a constant thing for the filth, and there was nothing Machiko could do to stop that.
The Betrayer seemed content to follow Aisako-sama around the room, and ignore the Loved Ones who stared at him. Machiko thought some of their expressions were funny. Some Loved ones looked like they wanted the Betrayer dead just as much as Machiko wanted him dead. Other loved ones looked as though they were confused by his presence. Maybe they couldn't process what they were seeing? The Demon in the Temple of the Loved Child? Machiko could understand that.
Others looked at the Demon with something…hopeful. Like they were happy to see it there. If Machiko didn't recognize most of them as people who believed the Demon and Aisako-sama were meant to be in love, Machiko would accuse them of being spies.
The only time the Demon showed any sort of anger was when Shigeru-kun approached Aisako-sama, and kissed her hands. Or when Shigeru-kun held her hands, introducing Loved Ones. Or when Aisako-sama put her hands on Shigeru-kun's shoulders- Actually. Machiko thought the Demon looked angry the entire time Shigeru-kun was in the room. But it didn't seem like the Demon was about to attack Shigeru-kun or anything, so Machiko resolved to just keep an eye on the Demon while Machiko made her own way around the room. Machiko had to speak with every Loved One Machiko saw. Ask them how they were doing. Ask about family. Any concerns they might have. Tell them some of Aisako-sama's more recent adventures (without letting slip anything about missions. Those weren't for civilian ears).
Before Machiko knew it, it was the end of the meeting, and the other Loved Ones were reluctantly making their way out of the room. Shigeru-kun and Tengai-san were the last Loved Ones. Machiko didn't want them to go. Once they left, it would be time for Aisako-sama to learn everything- Aisako-sama would never forgive Machiko…
"Shinkiro-san, would it be alright if we stayed down here for a moment. There are some things that must be explained to Aisako-sama and Gaara-san."
"Of course, Guardian-sama. You go ahead and make yourselves comfortable, and let me know if there's anything we can do for you…but are you sure you want the Demon to remain- Not that I'm questioning your wisdom it's just-"
Machiko knew that wasn't going to go well with the Demon. It seemed to want us to trust it, which was a stupid idea but…hey. When the Demon's sand began to shift, Machiko hissed a warning at the filth. Machiko would have followed the hiss with harsh, biting words to put the Demon in its place, but Sora-sama shot Machiko a look with cold brown eyes. Sora-sama then turned to look at the Demon, who let its sand fall to the floor. It must have remembered Sora-sama's warning.
"Of course, Shinkiro-san. I understand your concern. But don't worry. I'm sure the Demon will behave properly. He too is unaware of the roll he plays."
Tengai-san pulled Shigeru-kun out of the room after herself. As he was dragged out, Shigeru-kun called out to Aisako-sama, blowing her a kiss, "If you need anything Aisako-sama, I will be sure to please!"
Machiko was almost glad when the Demon created a barrier of sand to stop Shigeru-kun from coming back. Shigeru-kun had no concept of taking things slowly, did he? Machiko told Shigeru-kun time and time again that Aisako-sama isn't used to people Aisako-sama doesn't know being nice to Aisako-sama. It confuses Aisako-sama, and makes her stressed, thinking they're plotting against her. He couldn't go trying to earn Aisako-sama's favour when he hadn't even earned her trust.
For a moment after Shigeru-kun and his mother left, Aisako-sama and Sora-sama seemed to be rather cheerful, but after the moment had passed, Aisako-sama brought up the reason Sora-sama had brought Aisako-sama to the Temple. Aisako-sama was finally getting her answers.
Aisako-sama would learn what happened when she was born to this world. Sora-sama would tell Aisako-sama about how he and Shigeru-kun's parents started the Temple…and then he'd tell Aisako-sama how he gave Machiko the special mission of watching Aisako-sama and telling Sora-sama all about what Aisako-sama was up to.
And then Aisako-sama would hate Machiko.
Only…that wasn't what happened.
Sora-sama had only just finished telling Aisako-sama why the villagers hated her, when Aisako-sama said something very odd, which derailed the conversation completely:
"Well. That explains why I didn't remember the rebirth."
The look on Aisako-sama's face is thoughtful for a long second, before it seemed to dawn on her just what had been said. Machiko could see the blood flow from Aisako-sama's cheeks, leaving her deathly pale as she turned to stare at Sora-sama.
Sora-sama's eyes were wide, and Machiko could see them practically light up with interest.
"What was that, Ai-sa-ko-chan?"
Aisako-sama shifted, her eyes darting away from Sora-sama. For a moment, her eyes settled on the Demon. Machiko frowned at the look of understanding on his face, like suddenly everything about Aisako-sama made sense to the Demon.
Before Machiko could snap at the Unholy Worm, he blinked, and his eyes shift off to the side. Machiko thought he could hear voices in his head. He often seemed to be listening to voices Machiko couldn't hear. The Demon is clearly as mindless as he is heartless.
"I- I…um…I meant, that's why I couldn't remember being born!" Aisako-sama gave a weak laugh. Machiko was sure that Aisako-sama knew that the lie was unbelievable, but Aisako-sama seemed desperate not to speak of the 'rebirth'.
"Oh no, Aisako-chan." Sora-sama said, tutting quietly, "I've told you a secret…don't you think you should tell me one in return?"
And then…something changed in Aisako-sama's face. It was a look Machiko was most familiar with. Aisako-sama had a tendency to get...angry…when she felt threatened. To show that Aisako-sama was the biggest threat in the room, even when she wasn't. As awe-inspiring as Aisako-sama was, Machiko was under no illusion. Aisako-sama was weaker than both Sora-sama and the Betrayer.
"Oh please." Aisako-sama's voice came out in a low, bored tone, "It's hardly as though you're deprived of information about me. Don't think I haven't been aware, So-ra-sa-ma, of all the eyes you've had watching. All the ears you've had listening. Don't think I've been oblivious to the fact that Machiko-chan here has been spilling my secrets to you the entire time."
Machiko can't stop herself from flinching. Aisako-sama's voice had quickly grown cold and angry. Something inside Machiko shriveled up at the sound, making Machiko's chest hurt. Like someone had shoved a kunai deep inside, and was twisting it around and around until there was nothing left but mush inside.
Sora-sama, for his part, looked completely unapologetic about spying on Aisako-sama. Sora-sama just shrugged, "Aisako-chan, you know it's my job to spy on everyone in this village, right? Someday it'll be your job too. I have to know what everyone is up to…especially people like you. People who don't blend in…who aren't sheep. When I see a child like you, with eyes too old for their body…well…I have to make sure you aren't a shinobi in disguise, or anything of that sort."
Aisako-sama didn't answer him. She just stared at Sora-sama with cold eyes. For a second, Machiko thought she felt Aisako-sama's chakra brush against Machiko, and it made Machiko freeze in fear. Machiko knew what would happen to Machiko if Aisako-sama's chakra turned Machiko's blood into amber. Machiko ad the images of small animals twisted and punctured by shards of amber...droplets of blood solidified in orange...layers of amber where puddles of blood once rested-
"I've been monitoring you since you were 'born', Aisako-chan. Eleven years and I had no clue…See? If I didn't pay such close attention to everything you did, I might have missed that little slip up…but I didn't. And Aisako-chan? If you don't want to spend more time in the depths of the Alley…I would tell me what exactly you meant by 'rebirth'."
Aisako-sama's eyes glaze over for a brief moment, flickering about in her skull as Aisako-sama tried to weight he options.
Finally, Aisako-sama gave a heavy sigh, letting her head drop into her hands. Aisako-sama took a deep breath and sat up straight. A defiant smirk bloomed across Aisako-sama's face. Amber eyes moved from Machiko to Sora-sama to the Betrayer and back again, before Aisako-sama finally spoke.
"Fine. Fine. You win, Sora-sama. I'll tell you." Aisako-sama waved a dismissive hand, rolling her eyes.
Aisako-sama began to speak, but Sora-sama's head suddenly shot up, and he raised a hand that instantly silenced Aisako-sama.
Everyone is quiet for a long moment. Machiko's eyes dart around the room, searching for what had caused Sora-sama to silence Aisako-sama, but there is nothing that Machiko can see or feel.
"Perhaps...the rest of this discussion should take place somewhere a little more...private."
And Machiko wonders if Machiko had been worried about the wrong thing the entire time? Maybe Machiko shouldn't have worried about what Aisako-sama would find out...but rather, what others would find out?
And I give y'all the second part of Machiko's POV!
