Saiou stared at the screen of his laptop, his thin lips barely changing at the conclusion of the Duel between his former subordinates, which now displayed the scene of Manjoume's friends helping him back to his feet. He had the Duel on in the middle of finishing his Deck for his own match against Edo, which was scheduled to begin after a brief recess while the janitors prepped the Duel Field for the next battle.

His eyes fickered to the door, which slid open as his last worshiper entered, though the seer noted that the attendant was absent, this time. The prince sighed, shaking his head. "So, Manjoume-kun lost, after all."

The only recognition to the Prince's words was the slight shift in Saiou's head. "Apparently, our concerns were accurate," the Society's leader stated, "by themselves, Duelists and Duel Spirits are powerless, but when working in concert, they have the ability to overcome the Light of Truth's predictions."

Ojin huffed. "Then, Tenjoin Asuka has also gained the ability to see Duel Spirits?"

Brow furrowed, the fortuneteller disagreed. "She seems to be able hear and sense them, but I don't believe she's fully been able to see them, as Manjoume-kun and Yuki Judai have. She's probably at around Edo's level of ability, in terms of sensing the Spirits." He placed his Deck down and rose. "It's the only way she would have been able to beat Manjoume-kun with those cards mixed in with her own."

"You're going," Ojin declared, rather than asked. The Arcana Force-user replied by snatching a Duel Disk sitting on the Desk in front of him, walking back to the desk for his Deck.

"Although strong, Edo will not be able to achieve victory over me by himself," the man informed him matter-of-factly, a sly sneer sneaking onto his visage.

"What about Manjoume-kun?"

"We don't need to concern ourselves with him. I still have to fulfill his desire from when he joined the Society. That will come soon enough." He placed his hands firmly on the young prince. "You need to focus on your upcoming Duel with Judai. That boy is strong and will require all of your focus and strength in order to fulfill your purpose. Do not fail me." The seer's eyes flashed a purple light that mirrored in the young Prince's eyes.

Prince Ojin smiled and bowed to his master. "I will succeed, Saiou-sama."

Chapter 21: Wheel of Destiny: Light Barrier

Asuka and the others eventually guided Manjoume to the infirmary and led him to one of the beds. After taking off his coat, he slid under the covers, his head pounding excruciatingly. Thankfully, the Ojama Trio seemed to have ceased their celebration of reclaiming their 'Aniki' and left him with as little silence as possible.

While the group assisted the pale and perspiring Duelist from his heavier clothes, Ayukawa vanished, reappearing with a glass of water and a dose of pain reliever to ease a little of the discomfort the boy was experiencing.

"Is it like this for all of the Society of Light members?" Shou sadly inquired, after the nurse left them to their own devices. "I don't remember most of the Duelists having a reaction like this…"

Misawa stroked his jawline thoughtfully. "If I had to guess, it depends on who may have 'inducted' you into the Light and how long you were a part of it. I remember being disoriented from having a foggy memory, but not much else."

"After what happened, it took me quite a while to recover, as well," Asuka agreed. "Although…" She didn't want to finish; her dreams were still haunted occasionally of what she did to the Osiris Red she had befriended.

Kenzan started growling anxiously. "And Manjoume-sempai was in the Society right after Judai-Aniki vanished…it's been much longer than anybody else. And when we dueled, he told me that Saiou was the one who got him to join."

Everyone looked at the boy with concern. "Hey," he grunted, "it's not like I'm dying, just in some pain. Go enjoy yourselves. I'll probably pass out here, soon enough." Although the attention was welcome—as disgusted as he was to admit it—the pity was something he could do without.

It took some more coaxing, but they decided crowding around the injured party wasn't going to make his health return any sooner. Asuka stated she'd wait with the Society Duelist until it was time for her Brother's Duel with Kaiser, in which case she'd go fetch one of the others to replace her, so she could watch live. They set up a monitor in the hospice so the pair could watch the Duels in the meantime.

"Well, I think it's time we allowed you two some space," Fubuki winked at Asuka who replied with a ferocious frown. "I'm going to go watch the other two Duels from the Waiting Room and focus on my own match." He bade everyone goodbye and left.

"It's almost time for the next match, so we'll return as well," Shou announced.

"Contact us on our PDAs if you need anything, Asuka-san," Areka assured. Junko and Momoe smiled in affirmation with her. The troupe then slowly filed out the door.

Seeing them out the door, Asuka whirled to the boy lying in front of her. "It seems like I went a little too rough in our Duel," she exhaled modestly.

If it hadn't pained him so much to laugh, he would've done so at the awkward joke and odd expression she revealed. It wasn't like her. Even so, he did release a weak chuckle, so as not to shuffle his head around. "If I recall correctly, I went awfully rough on you a while back."

The Obelisk Queen's eyes widened. "You remember?"

"Mostly." The boy turned away. Before he could continue, the doors slid open and footsteps echoed in the clinic.

"Manjoume! Are you here?"

"Judai…!"

"It's Manjoume-san!" the bed-ridden Duelist barked as ferociously as his throbbing skull would allow. Shortly thereafter, chocolate-brown hair peered over the line of beds followed by a similarly-colored pair of eyes. Distress was evident in the boy's features.

After another gaze of sympathy caused the black-haired boy to growl. "What is it?"

Judai was rocked from his reverie. The pained visage faded as swiftly as it had appeared. "Sorry, just checking up on how you were doing. That was an intense Duel!"

His new attitude did little more than irate the youth even further. "Is that it?" Judai tossed him a questioning look. Realizing that he was getting agitated at Judai for being Judai, he continued more gently. "You seem to have more to say. Out with it."

Asuka gave the boy an incredulous glance, but said nothing. Her eyes roamed back to Judai when he began to stammer. "Uhhh…I…well…no, never mind. It's nothing. I'm just happy you're back. And...sorry...about leaving…" He rubbed the back of his head ungracefully, slowly backing away from the two.

"Well, my Duel's up next, and Edo'll need all the support he can get, so, I'm gonna go." He excused himself with Ayukawa-sensei and bolted out the door.

The Obelisk Queen followed him with a disheartened gaze out the door. The Osiris Red was clearly troubled and the fact he wore his emotions on his sleeves made it even harder on her and his friends. Rushing off like that was a silent refusal of their help.

Asuka wasn't the only one perturbed by Judai's display. Manjoume glowered at a point in the ceiling and clenched his sheets tightly in his fists, finding some way to abate his restlessness. He exhaled. "Ridiculous."

"I knew it, in the end, I..." Judai muttered to himself. He left the infirmary unable to look at his rival. He remembered his Duel with other members of the Society of Light, especially Asuka. No matter what they said, Judai would feel a little responsible. He remembered what Saiou told him.

"You don't realize that every decision you make doesn't just affect yourself, yet you consider yourself a hero. They affect those close to you, those you try to protect, and even your enemies."

The diviner's words reverberated endlessly in his ears. The seer's voice taunted him, mocked him. He wondered if he was always so oblivious to his friends' feelings, just because he was so intent on doing what he wanted. His chest ached.

Winged Kuriboh's spirit warbled encouragingly next to his ear, causing Judai to stop to turn to it. "Aibou..." The little fairy pawed at the Duelist's face, causing him to flinch. "I got it, I got it. I gotta focus." He smiled wanly. "It's hard to get too down with you around here." The creature trilled boisterously before disappearing.

"Judai-kun!"

The boy turned. "…Fubuki-san…"

"Heading back to the Waiting Room? I'll come with you." Fubuki didn't wait for an answer, steering Judai with him towards the makeshift study.

Shou and the others returned to their seats as Edo and Saiou entered the arena and approached each other to exchange their Decks.

"I wonder where Judai's at?" Areka inquired.

Junko pursed her lips. "He hasn't come around since they went to see who their opponents in the Final Round."

"I thought he'd at least go and visit Manjoume-kun..." the red head's friend added soberly. "I hope he's all right."

Shou concurred. 'Aniki...'

A young Edo Phoenix entered the room and saw a Deck of cards on the table he knew Saiou always toyed with, but didn't know why. Every day, he would see his blue-and-white-haired friend as he shuffled the Deck and draw a few cards out.

Sometimes, he would watch the teen's features and guess the positive or negative connotation based on his reactions. A serene face usually meant great things were in store, but occasionally, great grief would cloud the eyes of the diviner. Lately, Saiou's face had become even more pallid than normal. He claimed he was seeing the future. Edo didn't doubt Saiou's ability, but he was unsure exactly how he was able to do it. Then, maybe Edo could help with whatever was ailing his friend.

"You have a question in your eyes," a soft, warm voice intoned behind the Duelist.

"Saiou…! I was just wondering about today's fortune."

Saiou grinned at the young lad. "Let's take a peek; I haven't seen what the future has in store for us today."

Moments later, the two boys were seated across the Desk from each other. After a few moments of preparation, Saiou began. The first card was the Heirophant.

"What's it mean?"

"Salvation. I've also learned it represents you. You'll be a savior someday."

A savior? A hero!?That's what Edo always wanted! The youth was eager to continue. "What else do the cards say?"

Saiou revealed the next card forced a smile. "The Devil."

Edo quirked an eyebrow. "Ehh?"

"It represents the evil you'll overcome. And that evil will be none other than…me."

"Huh? What do you mean?"

The seer breathed. "I know you've been keeping an eye on me recently during my Tarot readings. In my future, I'll succumb to temptation and fall to a great evil."

"What? But…" the boy was somber. "I don't want anything bad to happen to you…"

"Edo, it's OK." The boy tearfully looked at his friend in disbelief. "Because you're going to also save me by defeating this evil."

The Duelist sniffled. "I am…?" Saiou nodded. "I'm…not sure what I can do…but if it means helping you out, then I'll gladly do it. I'll save you and you and Mizauchi and I can all live together!"

For the first time in several weeks, Saiou allowed content to pass over his face. "I'm counting on you, Edo!"

Edo opened his eyes after losing himself to his thoughts. He stood before the much-taller Saiou. Considering the confrontation, there was a surprisingly serene aura coming from his manager as he approached the middle of the arena. Taking out his Deck, he handed his HEROs to the opponent, taking the other Deck and shuffling it.

"You have a question in your eyes," the fortuneteller stated.

Edo bit his bottom lip. "Just one, Saiou…back then, your fortune…is this the time for it to come to pass…?"

"I wonder..." the elder man mused. He handed the HEROs back to Edo, who snatched it irritably. He returned his opponent's Deck and whipped around to go back to his side of the field.

Edo pointed at his friend. "If it is that time, I'll definitely fulfill the prophecy you set out!" He switched on his Duel Disk. His opponent scoffed, activating his Duel Disk to life.

"DUEL!"

"The first move is mine! Draw!" He looked at his first draw of the contest adding it to his hand. He inspected his foe. He placed a card from his hand onto his Duel Disk. "Destiny HERO Dunker is Summoned in Defense Position!" (1200/1700) An iron-masked hero with red eyes and dreadlocks jumped out from a ray of light, descending onto the field.

"Dunker's Effect activates!" He took Destiny HERO Disk Commander from his hand and slid it into his Duel Disk's Graveyard Slot. "I send 1 Destiny HERO to my Graveyard to inflict 500 Damage to the player." The dark HERO clenched its right fist, which gained energy around its hand from the sacrificed card. He dashed across the field towards the robed seer and struck him forcefully across the chest. (Saiou's LP: 4000 – 500 = 3500 LP)

"End turn." Edo observed the damage his creature dealt to the enemy, analyzing the situation. 'Saiou is not a bad Duelist, but his strategy is a very basic rush strategy in order to get plenty of high-level monsters to the field. What's more, his Arcana Force monsters have a high-risk, high-reward set-up. By attacking swiftly from the start and controlling the pace, I can counter it with my Destiny HEROs.'

"You're deluding yourself into think your HEROs can save you, aren't you?" The fortuneteller sneered at the attack, unfazed. "It's true, your Destiny HEROs are incredibly powerful, as they can manipulate time. However, you're forgetting that I'm the one who dictates the future."

The HERO-user scowled, gritting his teeth in annoyance.

"My turn. Draw." He examined his card. "Field Spell – Light Barrier, activates!"

"Here it comes...!" Misawa cried.

Sliding the card into the Field Spell slot, a ray of light rose from the ground behind Saiou and speared the ceiling. The light split and surrounded the two combatants, creating a thick veil of frosty white, hampering the visibility of the crowd from the two Duelists a bit. Edo gaped as the Spell enclosed himself and Saiou within.

The turn cracked a deriding smirk. "Your low-class monsters shall bow before the Light of Truth."

"What...?" The Pro's brow narrowed. He heard a growl coming from in front of him. Edo's Defense Position creature in front of him. A cloudy shroud had enveloped the HERO, who appeared to be weakened by the effect.

Kenzan's eyes expanded in surprise. "What's going on with Edo's monster!?"

"The Boundary of Light - Light Barrier Effect," the diviner gestured at the new field they entered, "as long as this is face-up on the field, the effects of all non-Arcana Force monsters are negated!"

"What's with that effect!?" Areka hissed.

"Light Barrier's effect does not end there." He placed a card onto his Disk's Monster Card Zone. "Summon, Arcana Force III – The Empress." (1300/1300)

As the abnormal creature appeared on the field, a smaller version of itself in a card form appeared over its head. "When Arcana Force monsters are summoned, their effects are changed based on whether they are 'Upright' or 'Reversed'."

Junko frowned. "This strategy...it seems pretty luck-based for a person so involved with Destiny. It only has a 50-50 chance of being positive for the controller, doesn't it?"

The youth across from Saiou remained steadfast. "If the card ends up Reversed, it ends with a bad effect for you. You understand, right?"

"Foolish." Edo was taken aback. The card rotated once and stalled in the Upright position.

"With The Empress in the Upright position, whenever my opponent Normal Summons or Sets a monster, I can Special Summon an Arcana Force monster from my hand."

"Tch...Lucky..." Momoe grumbled.

'Is that all?' Misawa darkened his vision. 'No...'

"Although I summoned successfully, The Empress's 1300 ATK cannot touch Dunker's 1700 DEF." He slid a card from his hand into his Disk. "Set 1 card. End turn."

"My turn, Draw!" He looked at his Field's creature then at his new card. 'Destiny HERO Diamond Dude. Normally, I could summon him onto the field and activate his effect. However, I don't have a way to eliminate his Field Spell at the moment. But, I still can't just let him gather a massive field. In that case...'

He slammed the card into position. "Summon, Diamond Dude!" (1400/1600) The cloaked HERO appeared on Edo's field, descending from above.

"At this moment, The Empress's effect activates," Saiou declared, grabbing a card from his hand. Edo's visage did not waver as he interrupted Edo's maneuver. "I Special Summon an Arcana Force monster from my hand. Come, Arcana Force VIII – The Strength!"(1800/1800) Another bizarre beast burst onto Saiou's field. Immediately, the card of the creature appeared above the monster.

"He can't get lucky twice in a row!" Kenzan announced, though he sounded more like he was trying to convince himself.

Saiou just grinned devilishly. "It will land Upright!" Per the Tarot reader's prediction, the card rotated once and, again, it landed Upright. The crowd gasped.

"He got it again...!?"

"I knew it," Misawa winced, "something else is controlling these cards..."

Edo scowled. "It must be..."

The Arcana-user merely cackled gleefully. "That's right, The Boundary of Light – Light Barrier's Effect doesn't just negate your monsters. I can decide whether all of my cards land Upright or Reversed!"

The HERO-user wheezed sharply. "Impossible!"

"What is that!?" Shou cried.

Saiou continued his explanation. "Furthermore, The Strength's 'Upright' effect activates! I take control of one monster on your field!" A shrill signal echoed from the head of the frightful creature, causing everyone else to cover their ears. Sound wave after sound wave raced passed the HERO Edo had just summoned. Its eyes flashed with a brilliant white Light.

"Diamond Dude..." its owner grunted. The creature appeared conflicted, but slowly stepped towards Saiou's field, turning to face its owner as an enemy. 'I was careless...I just helped him triple the number of monsters on his field...Dammit.'

"What's wrong, Edo? It's still your turn."

Edo recovered his senses and reached for a card in his hand. "Set one card. End turn."

"My turn." The Duelist took a card from his Deck. Above him, a card form of the Field Spell appeared and began to rotate. "During each of my Standby Phases, Light Barrier's Effect activates. If it lands in the 'Reversed' position, it's other effects are negated." His opponent scoffed. "However, Edo, its position is not for you to decide. It will land Upright!"

As the Diviner declared, it landed Upright, once again causing the field to be shrouded in white.

The boy's friends in the stands stood at a loss for words. "Is there any weakness in that Field Spell? It's too powerful."

Misawa clenched his hands together tightly. "Normally, you might luck out and have Light Barrier negate itself...but, with Saiou controlling the Wheel of Fate, itself..."

Areka pleaded silently. "Edo..."

"The Strength! Attack Destiny HERO Dunker!" Long tentacles for arms sped from the creature and crashed through its target, shattering its hologram. The Pro shielded himself with his arms, immediately hiting a button on his Duel Disk.

"Trap Activates! D-Signal!" A spotlight appeared on the ceiling of the arena with the Destiny HEROs logo on full display. "I can Special Summon a Level Four or lower D-HERO! Come on, Defender!" (100/2700) A massive block with arms and beady eyes appeared in front of Edo, determined to guard its master from further attack.

The opponent persisted, undaunted by the Trap. "Light Barrier's final effect activates! When an Arcana Force monster destroys another monster in battle, I gain Life equal to the monster's original ATK!" (Saiou's LP: 3500 + 1200 = 4700 LP)

"Set one card. End turn."

"My turn!" He tore a card and viewed it momentarily, before activating it. "Spell Card – Destiny Draw!" He placed another card in his Graveyard. "I discard a Destiny HERO to draw two cards."

'It's here!' He brimmed with tenacity at the revelation of his newest cards. "Come one, Destiny HERO Celestial!" (1600/1400) A red-and-black armored HERO with a pair of colossal armaments arched on its back arrived on Edo's field.

The fortuneteller's eyes narrowed. "That's the monster that defeated the Ultimate D." He grinned. "However, that activates The Empress's Effect." He placed another monster onto his field. "Come, The Ultimate Arcana! Arcana Force XXI – The World!" (3100/3100) A towering nightmare descended from a pillar of light, draping a shadow over the field. It carried some artifact of unknown origin on its back. Its card form shimmered into view above it and immediately locked into the Upright position.

"I'm not done! Next, the Equipment Spell – Heavy Storm Blade activates!" Attaching itself to the creature's forearm was a trio massive blades.

"All right! Edo! When the monster equipped with Heavy Storm Blade attacks, all other Spell and Trap cards on the Field are destroyed."

"Now he can clear the field of Light Barrier!"

"Go, Celestial! Attack!" The HERO determinedly charged towards its target's side of the platform. Leaping above and preparing to strike its adversary.

"Heavy Storm Blade's Effect activates!" The propeller began to whirl, causing a violent wind to rip across Saiou's Field.

The diviner groused, reaching for another button on his Disk. "Activate Reverse Card, The Heirophant's Wand!" A dome similar to the one created by Saiou's Field spell rose up from the card and encased the blue-haired man's field in a protective cocoon. "For this turn, cards on my side of the field are not destroyed by card effects. In return, my opponent draws 1 card."

Edo spat. "But, battle continues. And I'm not leaving the HEROs my father created under your control. Celestial! Eradicate Diamond Dude!" Bearing down on its opponent, the HERO brought its arm carrying its revolving weapon across the opponent's form, dividing it in two. An explosion resounded, sealing the creature's demise. (Saiou's LP: 4700 – 1600 + 1400 = 4500 LP)

"Forgive me…Diamond Dude…" As his monster returned to his side of the field, Edo slid a card into his Spell and Trap Card Zone. "Set card. End turn."

"My turn." The diviner ripped a card from his Deck. "At this moment, Light Barrier's effect activates."

"It has to land in the Reversed position, or Edo won't last…!" Misawa declared.

"Edo-sama…!" Junko and Momoe

Edo stood firm underneath the pressure of the card's rotation. Each full revolution felt like an eternity until the card finally ceased.

"It's Reversed!"

The group of friends cheered excitedly, except for Shou who sat in his seat, keeping his eyes on the Duel. Kenzan's brow furrowed. "Marufuji-sempai? What's wrong?"

Shou shook his head. "I'm glad something finally went right for Edo, but…" he pointed at the blue-and-white haired leader of the Society, "…Saiou doesn't really look that bothered by it."

"How's that, Saiou?" Edo retorted. "Looks like everything isn't quite set in stone, yet!"

The older Duelist simply scoffed. "Do you really think I didn't foresee this? Everything has played right into my hands; this reprieve changes nothing."

"What's that!?"

"First, since his effect is no longer negated, Defender's effect allows me to draw one card, since it is in Defense position." He took another card from his Deck and placed it into his hand.

"Here I come, Edo! I won't leave a single monster standing!" He motioned at his first monster. "The Strength attacks Celestial!" The limbs of the creature were thrust forward and extended like rubber towards its new target. Although it tried to shield itself with its forearms, the HERO could do little against the stronger monster, destroyed by the feelers. (Edo's LP: 4000 – 1800 + 1600 = 3800 LP)

"The World attacks! Obliterate Destiny HERO Defender!" The massive eye on what was supposed to be the alien's head began to twist on the gigantic being and focused in on Edo's last line of defense. Although strong, Defender was helpless as an incredibly bright laser erupted from Saiou's monster that incinerated the wall with wanton mercilessness.

"Now, you're wide open. The Empress will attack!" The smaller priestess-looking creature hovered in front of Edo and unleashed a parade of tentacles that aimed for the Pro.

"I won't let you—Trap Open; D-Fortune!" He ejected a card from his Graveyard. "I'm counting on you one last time, Defender!" A transparent image of the creature destroyed only moments prior reappeared in between Edo and Saiou's monster. The HERO fought off the appendages aimed at its master and returned them to the creature, leaving Edo unharmed.

Saiou huffed in amusement. "When my opponent declares a Direct Attack, I can remove from play a Destiny HERO in my Graveyard," Edo explained. "With this, the Battle Phase ends." The Empress halted mid attack and slowly lowered back to her owner's side of the field.

"As expected of you, Edo. You were able to fend off my attacks with little damage," the Pro's friend commended. "However, though this is the end of my turn, the battle isn't over yet." He indicated his latest monster he summoned. "Arcana Force XXI – The World has a very special ability—when it is in the 'Upright' position, I can sacrifice two of my monsters in order to skip the opponent's next turn."

"What is that!?"

"Edo's turn is skipped!?"

"But he has nothing on his field! No Monsters! No Spells or Traps!"

"And Saiou has a powerful monster already standing there…"

Two monsters dissolved into fragments of light as their card forms went into the Graveyard. "My turn…" He barely waited a second to take note of his draw. In the meantime, Light Barrier's Effect activated, the card performed three quick revolutions before freezing in the Upright Position, reactivating the Field Spell.

"BATTLE! OVER CATASTROPHE~!" The creature on Saiou's field, once again, began to ignite its eye to charge up its laser.

For the first time, Edo felt a dark foreboding chill rise up his spine. Saiou may as well have been as enormous as the creature that was firing at him. The group of friends all gasped as the brilliant ray of light roared forth towards its target. Edo could only stare helplessly at the blast as it collided with him, knocking him off his feet and several feet backwards. (Edo's LP: 3800 – 3100 = 700 LP)

Gasping for air after the attack, Edo desperately tried to climb to his feet, but to no avail. "Saiou…" the Pro muttered weakly, "is that…really you…?"

For his part, Saiou beamed demonically at his supposed friend. "Why, of course, Edo," the diviner snarked. "Who else could I be?" Edo noticed that, since the beginning of the Duel, the man's features had become more and more intense and less and less human. Squirming on the ground, smoke billowed from the boy's white suit, as he finally clambered to his feet. Through the din, Edo noticed the pressure from his opponent engulfed him, as if the seer's hands were converging around the HERO-user.

"In my future, I'll succumb to temptation and fall to a great evil."

"What? But…" the boy was somber. "I don't want anything bad to happen to you…"

"Edo, it's OK." The boy tearfully looked at his friend in disbelief, "because you're going to also save me by defeating this evil."

The boy's face fell at the realization that he may fail to live up to his friend's prediction to help him. 'Saiou…'

Edo: Saiou…Where…where are you? I can't see you, anymore…you're so far away…

Saiou: Edo, fall into despair as my Destiny overwhelms your very being! You can do nothing before the might of Light Barrier and Arcana Force!

Edo: Saiou…
