Chapter 20

Every now and then they get a case that is just so unbelievable that they think it can't possibly be true. This was one of those cases. The cases that are so strange that they think it can't be true. The cases that make them question if they're really sane.

There'd been a news report lately that around London various people had been going missing, only for a statue of that person to be found the very next day. The media thought it was just some crazed serial killer but they knew better.

Sherlock and John had gone out to see if Sherlock's 'homeless network' knew anything about the recent events. Sam and Deanna had gone down to the police station to see if they could find out anything. Unfortunately the police knew absolutely nothing and were about as stumped as they were.

As they left the station a girl with red hair stopped them.

"Hello." She said anxiously.

"Hi." Deanna said.

"Are you Sam and Deanna?" She asked.

They both took a step back from the girl.

"How do you know our names?" Sam asked.

The girl laughed. "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

"We'd believe more than you'd expect us too."

"I know. I have information for you about the case."

"You do?" Deanna asked skeptically.

"Yeah, I'm part of Sherlock's homeless network. I know you're working with him."

"How do you know that?"

"It's complicated." The girl said dismissively.

"Right. 'Complicated'." Deanna said sarcastically.

"Do you want the information or not?" The girl asked obviously on the defensive.
"Yes, we want the information." Sam said before Deanna could say anything else.

"Okay, I'm going to sound crazy but here goes. It's not a serial killer. I can tell you that for certain. There's no way a serial killer could do what that..." She paused searching for the right word. "Thing did!"

"What thing?" Sam asked.

"Well I didn't see it per say."

"Then how do you know it was a thing?" Deanna asked.

"What else could turn a person to stone without touching them?" She said sarcastically.

"It turned them to stone? You sure of this?" Sam asked skeptically.

"100% certain. As crazy as it might sound I know what I saw."

"Well I think you may've just told us what we needed to know to crack this case wide open!"

"I did?"

"You did. Thanks for your help..." Sam paused trying to think of her name.

"It's Anna." The girl said.

"Well thanks for your help Anna. Maybe we'll see you around?"

"Yeah maybe. Good luck solving the murders!"

When Sam and Deanna got back to the flat Sam was instantly on the laptop doing research. Deanna flopped down on the couch and began playing on her phone. It wasn't long after they got back Sherlock burst through the door in a huff.

"Ugh! No-one knows anything!" He exclaimed.

"Calm down Sherlock." John called from behind him.

Deanna sat up from her position on the couch. "You guys got nothing?" She asked.

"Yup!" Sherlock said annoyed.

"Good thing we found something then." Deanna said.

"You two actually found something?" John asked.

"Yeah. Believe it or not, we're not completely useless." Deanna relayed to them what Anna had told them.

Sherlock pondered for a minute then suddenly exclaimed "This sounds awfully familiar."

"How?"

"The whole turning to stone thing, it sounds like the legend of Medusa."

John stared at Sherlock dumbstruck. "You know about Medusa?"

"Of course I do John! Knowledge of mythology can be very useful on cases."

"And knowledge of the solar system isn't?" John asked sarcastically.

"Oh not that again! It's not important!"

"Not important? It;s primary school stuff."

"So we go round the sun or round the moon or round and round the garden like a teddy bear it wouldn't make any difference! All that matters to me is the work, without that.."

"Your brain rots. Yeah I know." John said sarcastically.

Deanna couldn't help but laughing at the display before her. For fully grown men Sherlock and John could act remarkably similar to children.

Suddenly Sam ran over to them. "Nevermind the solar system! I've got something."

"Care to enlighten us Sammy?" Deanna asked sarcastically.

"I was just about to if you'd shut up and let me talk for five minutes. So get this. The thing killing all these people can only really be one thing, a gorgon."

"What on Earth is a gorgon?" Deanna asked.

"Do you know the story of Medusa?" Sam asked.

"Duh."

"Well Medusa was a gorgon. But the thing is in the history gorgons aren't actually seen as being that bad. In fact gorgons were often used as symbols of protection because of their power to turn people to stone."

"If they're so good then why is one going around killing people?" Deanna asked.

"I was getting to that. In the mythology there are only three known gorgons. Medusa and her two sisters Stheno and Euryale. So it's likely either Stheno or Euryale committing the murders."

"But why would they?"

"Maybe the loss of Medusa has finally gotten to them? I don't know. The point is we know what's doing it."

"Good point."

"So then how do we stop them?" John asked.

"Uh, that's the tricky part. We sorta can't."

"What do you mean we can't?" John asked.

"Well according to the lore they're immortal."

"Son of a bitch!" Deanna exclaimed.

"But I do have an idea as to how we could kill them."

"How?"

"We can't exactly decapitate them like Perseus did to Medusa as their heads would still be able to turn people to stone even after separated from the body. But since they can turn anyone to stone with a single look theoretically if they saw themselves they'd turn to stone as well."

"Great plan, just one problem. If everything that looks at them turns to stone, how the hell are we supposed to get near them, let alone kill them?"

"Well in the legend Perseus used a mirrored shield. So mirrors should work. It says nothing about if we see her reflection."

"But then what guarantee is there that it'll work on her?"

"Oh."

"Yeah oh."

"So basically we're left with decapitation."

"Yup. All we have to do now is find it."

After almost two hours of searching they finally had an idea as to where the gorgon would strike. They found that it tended to strike around midnight near Leinster Gardens. When the clock hit 10 they set off. Mirrors in one hand, deadly weapons in the other. They just had to hope that their plan would work otherwise... well they didn't want to think about the otherwise.

They arrived at Leinster Gardens at 11. There they waited for the gorgon to show up. Just before midnight they heard the sound of high heels stepping on concrete.

"Hello? I know you're there." The gorgon said in a sing song voice. She was met with silence. "Fine, I'll play your game. Come out, come out wherever you are." She sang.

John held up his mirror to get a look at the gorgon. The gorgon had blood red snakes for hair. The snakes heads had fresh blood dripping from their mouths. She was wearing a bright red dress which matched her 'hair' and had high heeled boots on.

"I see you. You with the mirror over there. You should know better than to hide from me. Come out." She said in a seductive voice.

John stepped out of his hiding place making sure to avoid looking at the gorgon. The others stayed hidden making sure not to get seen.

"So which one are you?" John asked the gorgon.

"Stheno. My name's Stheno." She said. "Tell your friends to come out.. John."

"How did you know my name?"

"A little fact that you humans don't know about me. I can read minds. Your friends are practically screaming your name. It's almost deafening. And yes you three. I know where you are. I know you want to kill me. Why don't you three come out and join John here?"

Deanna came out of her hiding spot with her weapon firmly gripped in one hand and her mirror in the other. She made sure to keep the mirror between her and Stheno at all times as she walked over towards John.

"You know that your weapons not going to work on me, right?" Stheno said mockingly.

"If your heads separated from your neck it's not like you can really do much though."

"Would be a good plan, but you're an idiot so it's obviously going to fail."

Just then Sam approached her from behind and made an attempt at separating her head from her neck. Stheno caught his wrist and spun around to look at him. Sam turned his head away just before he could catch Stheno's gaze and meet the same fate as the others who'd crossed her path.

"You think that you can kill me Sam? Just like Perseus killed my sister? Neat trick, but no. Come on Sam. Look at me. I know you want to. Just look at me, look into my eyes." Stheno's voice got higher as she said the words and it took on a seductive note.

"No!"

"Just one little look."

"Over your dead body." Deanna yelled from behind. Deanna charged at her with her weapon held high. Stheno just laughed at her petty attempt to save her brother. Before Deanna could even try and decapitate her Stheno turned. Her snakes eyes glew red. Deanna held her mirror up before they could turn her to stone. Just in time too.

Sherlock had begun to sneak around to the side of Stheno. Stheno had her attention focussed on Sam and Deanna so Sherlock hoped that she wouldn't notice him. Unfortunately she did. She turned around and grabbed his hands before he could get his mirror up. Stheno's eyes glew red.

The others watched in shock as they saw Sherlock turn to stone.

"You monster!" John yelled.

"I'm the monster?" Stheno asked. "Sam's the one who's been drinking demon blood. Deanna's the one who's been to hell. You've all killed so many people. So tell me, who's the real monster here?"

Deanna froze at the mention of Hell. Her memories threatening to overwhelm her. No they couldn't! Not here, not now!

Suddenly they heard a voice come from further down the street. "Enough!" It yelled. The voice clearly belonged to a girl.

"Leave them alone Stheno." The girl growled.

"Why should I?" Stheno asked her defiantly.

The girl smirked and held her hand up. Stheno was thrown back against the wall.

"What are you?" She asked as she got up.

"Someone you don't want to mess with." The girl said closing in on Stheno.

"Why won't my powers work on you?"

"It's complicated."

Stheno held up her hand again but this time Sam's weapon flew from his hands into hers. With one clean movement the girl swung the weapon and Stheno's head came clean off.

"Never liked her anyway." The girl said.

"Wow, you saved us!" John said.

"It was nothing." She said

"What are you?" Deanna asked.

"I'm an angel of the lord." The girl said.

"What's your name?"

"Hael."

"Thanks."

"It was nothing. Now let me do something about your friend."

Hael walked over to the Sherlock statue and placed the palm of her hand on his forehead. There was a blinding white light which caused Sam, Deanna and John to cover their eyes. When the bright light was gone Sherlock was unfrozen and looked confused.

"What happened?" He asked.

"Hael healed you."

"Before that?"

"Stheno turned you to stone."

"Alright. Seems legit." Sherlock turned to thank Hael but she'd already vanished.

"I suppose we should go home now." John said awkwardly.

"Home sounds good." Sam said.

As they began their walk back home Sam couldn't help but play Stheno's words over and over again in his head. Deanna's the one who's been to hell. Is that true? Had his sister really gone to hell? If so then why hadn't she told him.

"Deanna?" He asked as they walked.
"Yeah Sammy?"

"Did you really go to Hell?"

Deanna stopped in her tracks and glared at Sam. Her face had gone pale. She looked like she wanted to say something but couldn't find the words to say it.

"Deanna?"

"Yeah Sammy. Yeah." She said in a broken voice.

"Yeah?" He questioned.

"Yeah, I did go to Hell." A lone tear had formed in her eyes.

"Are you okay?"

"I'm fine. It was only Hell."

"I'm sorry I mentioned it."

"It's okay, you would've found out eventually. But what if Stheno was right Sam?"

"Right about what?"

"What if we're the real monsters?"

In heaven.

Castiel had lost track of time since Zachariah had practically trapped him in heaven. Cas had a plan to get out of course but Zachariah wasn't easily distracted.

Suddenly Hael appeared and walked over to Zachariah.

"Hael, good to see you again." Zachariah said.

"You too Zack." She said using his lesser known nickname.

"Don't call me Zack."

"Alright." She said rolling her eyes. "The seal is broken. Stheno is dead."

"Good job Hael."

When Hael failed to disappear Zachariah gave her a death glare.

"Is there a reason you're still here?" He asked his voice edging on anger.

"Yes, I have important news for you."

"What is it?"

"Do you remember the rouge?"

"You mean Anael?"

"Yes her." Hael spat.

"What about her."

"We found her." Hael said proudly.

"Where?"

"The streets of London. That little swine thought that she could hide from us."

"She can't anymore." Zachariah said proudly.

Castiel who'd been listening in to the conversation froze. Anael had been his 'friend' I suppose you could say. His superior even. But then she'd fallen. Angels saw fallen as the worst crime an angel could commit. Anael had fallen that now made her heavens most wanted.

Castiel knew he had to warn her, and fast. He looked at the symbol he'd drawn as Zachariah and Hael had been talking. It was the angel banishing symbol. He didn't know exactly if it'd work but he had to try. Now more than ever.

Castiel slammed his palm down on the symbol. A bright light came from it. When the light vanished Zachariah and Hael were gone. It had worked. Before they could come back Castiel teleported back to Earth. If he couldn't find Anael at least he'd be able to warn the Watson's and Sherlock as to what was coming.

Because if he failed to warn them... they'd undoubtedly be doomed to die.
