Chapter 21
Dean was starting to wake up and he felt for his gun underneath his pillow but he couldn't find it. "Lookn' for this?" A voice interrupted his sleepy mind. Dean looked over and saw gun pointed at him and the guy in the mask cocked the gun. Dean looked over at Sam and saw his brother with a gun aimed at him too. He glanced around the room to see if they had Adeline but Sam shook his head a bit. They didn't have her. "Mornin'" Dean rasped glad to know at least their sister was safe. "Shut up. Hands where I can see 'em." The masked man told him and Dean complied lifting on hand and used the other to keep him lounged on his bed. He looked at the man now that he was more awake and was able to make a connection.
"Wait a minute…is that you Roy?" Dean asked him sitting up. The man stayed silent and kept his gun trained on Dean. "It is, isn't? Which makes you Walt. Hiya, Walt." Dean greeted. "Don't matter." Walt said and lifted up his mask and Roy did the same. "Well, is it just me, or do you two seem a tad upset?"
"You think you can flip the switch on the apocalypse and just walk away, Sam?" Roy asked him. "Who told you that?"
"We ain't the only hunters after you." Walt said and cocked the shotgun he held. Dean was getting a little worried now. "See you in the next life." Walt told him. "Wait just hear me out, I can explain…please." Sam begged glad Adeline was safe in sound in the room next door unless they had already killed her. Sam gulped at the thought. But then Walt pulled the trigger and shot him twice.
Dean started getting up to help his brother but Roy trained his gun on him. "Stay the hell down." He told Dean. "Shoot him." Walt told his partner. "Killing Sam was right, but Dean…"
"He made us, and we just snuffed his brother, you idiot. You want to spend the rest of your life knowing Dean Winchester's on your ass? Cause I don't." Walt argued back. "What about Adeline? Do we have to hunt her down and kill her too?" Dean kept his relief hidden he made come to the same conclusion that Sam had and that maybe they found Adeline first and already ganked her.
"No one's heard from her in a long time Roy. Besides even if she does find out that we killed her brothers. We just have to make the first move and shoot her first." Walt told him. Roy swallowed, "But Walt, it's rumored she skinned a few people alive before she finally offed them because they hit on her. Just think what she could do to us when she finds this out." Dean frowned confused how the hell did rumors like those get started?
"Just shoot, we'll take care of her if it comes to that."
"Go ahead, Roy. Do it. But I'm gonna warm ya. When I come back, I'm gonna be pissed. Especially if I found out if you two idiots killed my sister." Dean growled. Roy still was hesitating to kill him. "Come on! Let's get this show on the road."
"Come on already." Walt said and Roy pulled the trigger. They picked up their shell casings and dug the bullets out of them and walked outside. They had their backs turned so they didn't see her and only felt the cold steel of gun pressed to their skulls. They stopped at the pressure.
"Roy, Walt imagine my surprise at seeing the two of you here…coming out of my brothers' room. Where I heard gunshots." Adeline told them. Roy and Walt turned around slowly and met Adeline's glare. "You killed my brothers'…see murder isn't really a good look on anybody but I don't mind adding your sorry asses to the mix." She said as they looked at her nervously. Adeline cocked the guns she had pulled on them with her fingers.
"Or, I could let you. But then when Dean comes back he's going to be mighty unhappy. So really I would be doing you a favor." She mused over. "Please Adeline, we meant no harm. We don't want to hurt you." Roy whined to her. Adeline narrowed her eyes slightly at him. "Maybe, you should have thought about that before you killed my brothers." She bumped his head against the gun. Her eyes went over to Walt then. "But I'm guessing Walt here was the mastermind behind this mess. Weren't you Walt?"
Walt met her silence and a glare telling her she had guessed correctly. "Hmmm, What to do, what to do…" Adeline hummed. "Please, just let us go." Roy begged her and Walt looked at him distastefully.
"Oh, I know." Adeline pushed her finger on the trigger shooting Walt and Roy watched scared for his life. "See, I knew Walt would never relent. He's not the kind of guy to leave loose ends but you Roy. Well I think me and you can compromise here."
"Y…Yes." Roy agreed softly wiping some of Walt's blood off him. "Atta boy, now the deal is leave me and my brothers alone. Inform the other hunters that too." Adeline told him and brought her gun down but kept her finger on the trigger ready if he tried something. Roy's eyes looked over to the room they had just left. "They're dead though…" He commented and Adeline rolled her eyes. "They never seem to stay dead though." She raised her gun back up, "Deal?" She growled. Roy nodded his head, "Yes, of course." He grumbled and Adeline pulled down her gun and waited as Roy picked Walt's body and carried it with him to give him a hunter's burial.
Adeline walked into her brothers' room and looked at their bodies worriedly. They can't be dead they'll be back… She thought convincing herself. "Castiel. Please come here, now." Adeline prayed hoping it would work and she sighed relived when she felt his presence. She turned around and he was looking around and saw Dean and Sam's bodies. "What happened?" He asked her.
"Hunters." Adeline grumbled. Castiel looked at Sam and Dean then back to here. "They'll be fine, the angels will bring back. They're the intended vessels." Castiel told her and Adeline hid a sigh of relief. "Okay, then." She nodded. "They can help me while they're there." Adeline raised an eyebrow telling him to go on.
"An angel, Joshua. He speaks to God and maybe he knows where God is. I'm being blocked from heaven so I can't go." Castiel told her and she saw the hope in the angels eyes. She nodded, "Sounds like a plan. How are you going to inform them though?"
"I will be able to communicate with them." Castiel told her and let his gaze fall away from her eyes only to notice her state of dress. Adeline was wearing a pair of black boy shorts and a matching tank. Castiel looked at her legs and swallowed before he looked back at her and she gave him a smirk and a wink not missing the gaze he was giving her. "Well while you go make contact, I'm going to bring my stuff in here and then take a shower." She told the angel and patted his shoulder before she left.

Dean woke up in the impala and 'Knockin' on Heaven's door' was playing. Dean looked around confused before he got out of the car looking around at the night confused. Then he heard another door slamming and turned around and saw Sam and Adeline. Except they were kids again. "Addy? Sammy?"
"Come on let's go!" Sam said carrying the box of fireworks he had in his hand and ran off. Adeline gave a smile and walked off after him keeping a close on their younger brother. It stuck him as odd seeing Adeline taller than Sam.
"Weird dream." Dean commented following after them.
Sam was taking out the fireworks out of the box and Adeline watched him then turned towards Dean. "Lighter, Dean." Adeline told him holding out her hand for it. Dean reached into his pocket and pulled one out but it wasn't his current one it was one he used long ago. "Whoa. I haven't seen this in years." He commented and handed the thing to Adeline as Sam walked over and handed them each a firework to hold. "Light em' up." Sam told his sister and she ruffled his hair earning a small glare but then he smiled. Adeline complied and lite up the fireworks then handed Dean back his lighter.
The fireworks went up and Dean looked at them amazed then looked over at his siblings whose faces had lite up in grins. "I remember this! That's fourth of July nineteen ninety six." Dean said looking back up at the sky. Then back at his siblings. "Dad would never let us do anything like this. Thanks, Dean. This great." He told Dean before giving him a hug then Sam turned back a little and pulled Adeline over to them who almost tripped but Dean caught her arm before he enveloped her and Sam in a hug.
They pulled back and Sam looked at Dean asking him a silent question and he nodded. Sam ran off and light another firework. Then turned over to Adeline who was smiling at Sam fondly he pulled Adeline over closer and pressed a kiss on top her head then reached into his pocket and pulled out a green apple blow pop for her along with lizard keychain. "I know it's not much and it's a little early but Happy Birthday Ads." He told his sister who looked up at him with bright eyes and a smile that lite up her face. Man he hasn't seen a smile like that in forever on his sister's face. "Thanks Dean." She pocketed the lizard keychain and unwrapped the sucker. "Fire in the hole!" Sam called and they both looked over at him as he ran back towards them and they all looked up as the fireworks went off.
Dean looked up grinning at them then glanced at his siblings who seemed to be equally entranced and were giggling to one another. Sam looked over at Adeline and whispered something in her ear before he kissed her on the cheek. And Dean smiled knowing their brother had wished her an early birthday too.
Dean heard shots and felt like he should be recalling something and he looked all around him at the darkness. "Ads! Sam?!" He called into the emptiness the night brought then walked back over to the impala confused.
"Dean!" He heard a voice call out from inside the car. He looked down into the car placing the voice. "Cas?"
"Yes, it's me." He heard the answer come from the radio. Dean opened up the door and sat down in the car. "You have got to stop poking around in my dreams. I need some me time." Dean told him. "Listen to me very closely. This isn't a dream."
"Then what is it?" Dean asked the angel. "Deep down you already know." Castiel told him and Dean tried to figure out what this was and remembered the shots fired at his brother then at him. "I'm dead." Dean stated not believing it. "My condolences."
"Where am I?"
"Heaven." Castiel answered him and Dean looked at the radio sure he heard wrong. "Heaven? How did I get to Heaven?"
"Please, listen. This spell, this connection it's difficult to maintain." Castiel said through the static of the radio. "Wait…if I'm in Heaven…Then where's Sam? And oh my God is Addy okay? Is she still alive?"
"What do you see?" Castiel asked him instead. "What do you mean, what do I see?" Dean asked him starting to panic some. "Some people see a tunnel or a river. What do you see?"
"Nothing. M-my dash. I'm in my car. I'm on a road."
"All right a road. For you, it's a road. Follow it, Dean. You'll find Sam. As for Adeline…." The radio cut off and Dean saw the light die down. "As for Adeline what?" Dean hit the radio then started up his car to go find Sam.

Adeline came out of the shower and saw Castiel leaning over a table and breathing heavily. She walked over and put a hand on his shoulder. "Are you okay Cas?" She asked him as her hair started dripping on the table and his coat. "I'm fine. The spell is just hard to maintain." Adeline took her hand off his shoulder then went over to her bag and grabbed a bottle of whiskey before she went and sat down at the table and set her feet on top it. "Well, I'm here if you need anything." she told the angel and unscrewed the top off her bottle.
Castiel looked at her touched at the offer but he shook his head. Adeline wouldn't be able to help him the spell. She shrugged her shoulders then she got to thinking and realized this would less of a strain on the angel and besides she couldn't really avoid death forever. "Kill me." She told him and Castiel looked up at her shocked. "I won't die supposedly but become an angel. I could pop off to heaven to find Joshua myself and find my brothers." She told him and Castiel narrowed his eyes at her and shook his head.
"No. I'm not going to kill you. I would never kill you. Nor will I ever let anyone do harm to you." Castiel growled at her upset she would offer herself up like that. "I'm going to die sometime Cas, maybe it's just time to accept that I'm turning into an angel. I mean I can't even get drunk." Adeline sighed looking at her whiskey bottle like it did something to offend her. "Let's stop kidding ourselves. I'm turning into an angel, let's just let it happen." She continued.
Castiel glared at her, "No. I'm not going to kill you. I'm not going to let you die." He growled and she shrugged her shoulders. Fine, exhaust yourself trying to communicate to heaven. She thought and took a swig of whiskey watching Castiel cock his head before he started reciting some enochian. She saw his eyes that looked like they were looking at something far off and knew he was making contact with her brothers.
/
"Cas!" Dean said banging his hand on the radio. Sam looked at him confused, "What are you doing?" He asked his brother. "What's it look like?" Dean grumbled. "Like you've lost your mind." Sam answered him. "Cas talked to me before using this phone home radio thing, so I..Cas!" Dean shouted tuning the thing to see if that helped.
"I can hear you." Castiel said from behind them. Sam and Dean walked over to the tv that was flashing Cas's face. "Cas! Where is Addy? Is she okay?" Dean questioned him. "She's fine, I'm with her. She's drinking whiskey." Castiel got out. Dean and Sam let go of the breaths they were holding at the good news then Dean tensed up again thinking about what had just happened.
"Cas, so uh, so I found Sam but something just happened. There was this weird beam of light." Dean told him. "Don't go into the light." Cas said gruffly. Dean and Sam looked at the tv oddly. "Okay. Thanks…Carol Anna…What was it?"
"Not what, who. Zachariah, he's searching for you."
"And if he finds us?" Sam asked the angel wondering what would happen if they 'Go into the light.'
"You can't say to Michael and Lucifer if you're dead, so Zachariah needs to return you to your bodies." Castiel told them. "Great, problem solved." Sam said excited. "No, you don't understand y-you're behind the wall. This is a rare opportunity." Cas argued.
"For what?" Dean asked him. "You need to find an angel. His name is Joshua."
"Hey, man no offense, but we are kind of ass-full of angels, okay? You find him." Dean grumbled.
"I can't, I can't return to heaven."
"So, what's so important about Joshua?" Sam asked the angel in the tv.
"The rumor is, he talks to God."
"And? So?"
"You think maybe just maybe we should find what the hell God has been saying?" Castiel growled at the boys. "Jeeze, touchy." Dean said looking over at Sam surprised at Castiel's tone and the curse. "Please. I just need you to follow the road." Castiel continued in a less angry tone.
"What road?" Sam asked him confused. "It's called the axis mundi. It's a path that runs through heaven. Different people see it as different things. For you, it's two-lane asphalt. The road will lead you to the garden. You'll find Joshua there. And Joshua…he can take us to God. The garden, please hurry." Castiel told them before he lost the connection.
Castiel blinked as the spell finished then jumped when he saw Adeline's face right in front of his. She gave him a smirk. "Little jumpy aren't you." She commented then went over and sat down back where she had been. Castiel furrowed his brows at her and she took a swig of whiskey and gave him a grin. "So, they going to find God?" She asked and Castiel nodded his head. Adeline kicked a chair opened for Castiel to sit down in before she put her feet on the table. Castiel sat down in the chair and pondered his own thoughts. The last time he had saw Adeline was after she had killed her husband. He had stood out in the hallway listening to them talk, and then felt the cold settle in him when she had agreed to kiss him. He had heard when she said that she loved them. He frowned at the thought that she loved him.
Adeline had been watching Castiel's face and saw it scrunch up then frown and she sighed wondering what was on his mind. "Cas?" She called trying to get his attention and Castiel looked up at her. Adeline unwrapped a sucker and popped it into her mouth and passed her vodka over. "You look like you need a drink." Castiel picked up the bottle and took a sip then handed it back to her. "Penny for your thoughts?" She asked the angel and he looked at her confused. "It's an expression meaning, do you want to tell me what you're thinking about?"
"No." Castiel answered her and she shrugged her shoulders and took a drink. She wasn't going to press him, she had things she didn't like to talk about. Castiel looked at her curious. "You're not going to insist I tell you what's on my mind?" Adeline tore her gaze off the whiskey bottle and looked back at the angel. "Nope." She answered him and after she pulled out her sucker. Castiel wrinkled his nose at the smell that wafted from it. "What is that?" He asked her confused. "Chicken and waffles." Adeline answered him and he crinkled his nose. "Why would you eat something like that?" He asked her. Adeline gave him a grin and moved closer to the angel.
"After the whole Famine thing I can't bring myself to have another blow-pop just yet. So I moved on, trying new flavors. Here try it, it's not as bad as it sounds." Adeline held out her sucker and Castiel looked at it curious and Adeline was looking at him expectantly so he bent down and licked it then took another like at the interesting flavor before he looked back up at Adeline.
"Weird right? Chicken and waffles, you'd never think they would work together but they do." She told him. Castiel watched her put the sucker back in her mouth. "I was thinking about you kissing Michael."
Adeline looked over at him and raised an eyebrow, "Why would you think about me kissing your brother?" Castiel frowned at her response. "No, not my brother Michael….your husband." Castiel answered her wondering if maybe this was something he wasn't supposed to talk about. Adeline rolled her eyes, she'll have to teach the angel how to tease sometime.
"What about it?" She asked looking at her bare feet. Castiel looked at the side of her face. "You said you loved him. Would you rather he was still alive and married to him?" Castiel asked her and Adeline ran a hand through her hair. Castiel reached out and grabbed it. Adeline looked down at their hands and smiled a little. "That's a very loaded question Cas…." Adeline took out her sucker and set it down and grabbed the whiskey and took a long sip before she set the bottle back down. "Loaded?" Castiel questioned her.
Adeline squeezed his hand, "Tough, it's a tough question. You actually ask a lot of them." Adeline pondered to herself for a moment. "I'm sorry you don't have to the question. I didn't mean to upset you." Castiel told her worried. "It's fine Cas, you are free to ask whatever you want. Although I guess depending on the question I might not answer it…." Adeline was silent for a moment and Castiel looked at her lashes as she blinked.
"I didn't think he deserved to die the way he did, but he made the stupid deal. If he didn't make the deal I probably would've never met him then well I wouldn't really care if he lived or died let alone married to him." She answered him and Castiel frowned and she sighed. "I wouldn't ever wish him death. I wouldn't want to be married to him anymore though." She answered his question.
Castiel nodded his head accepting her answer. "Do you still love him?" Adeline gave the angel a disdainful look. He really didn't know where to stop. Adeline let go of his hand and before Castiel could apologize for the question she sshed him and got up and pulled out two glasses then walked back over to the table and poured some whiskey in them. "We're going to play a game Cas. It's called questions. We will take turns asking each other questions. If one of us doesn't answer the question the other asks they take a drink as penalty."
Castiel nodded his head understanding. "I will go first. What do you really look like?" She asked him. It was something she had thought about was he just really a ball of light? "A multidimensional wavelength of celestial intent."
Adeline snorted yes that explained exactly what he looked like not really but it gave her a very vague idea. "Okay, then. Your turn."
"Do you still love him?" Castiel repeated his earlier one question. "Depends what you mean, love, yes. In love no. We've been through this though." Adeline told him with an eye roll and picked up her sucker she had set on the table and licked it. Adeline reached over and grabbed Castiel's hand missing the warmth it brought throughout her body. "What's it like being an angel?" She looked over at Castiel as she plopped her feet back on the table.
Castiel furrowed his brow unsure how to answer the question. "It was better before….when I was connected to heaven." Adeline pondered the question and decided she would accept that as an answer. She was starting to wonder if maybe it would be okay to be an angel after all. Castiel started brushing his thumb back and forth across Adeline's hand. "What was Kayla like?" He asked her softly he had saw in her memories how often she held the child and would even sit up at nights just to look at her.
Adeline blew out a breath, damn he really was going all out with the questions. "Sweet, Adorable her first word was snow then mom. She was a quick learner."
"What do your wings look like?"
"Bluish white feathers, my true size is actually the size of the Chrysler building." Castiel added and Adeline whistled impressed.
"Why do I feel cold deep inside when you kiss someone else?" Castiel asked her with furrowed brows. Adeline bit down on her sucker and took the stick out of her mouth before she picked up her cup of whiskey. "I have no idea why that happens to us." She said a took a sip then turned back to Cas.
"What will happen once I die and become an angel? Like what's the process for that?" Castiel reached over and took his glass in hand and took a sip. "I do not know what it entails but I won't let you die."
Castiel set down his glass and turned over to Adeline and reached out to caress her face sending tingles all through her nerves. "Do you want to be an angel?" Castiel asked her. Adeline picked up her glass and clinked it against the one on the table and took sip. "No idea." She answered truthfully then glanced down at their joined hands then back at Castiel still holding her cup. "What's your favorite color?" She asked which surprised him. "Like the color you enjoy the most." Adeline clarified for him. Castiel looked at Adeline's eyes and brushed her cheek before he took his hand down, he enjoyed the color of them then he glanced at her hair and he liked the color of that. Then he remembered the purple dress Adeline had worn when his brother had trapped them. Purple had made all his favorite things about her stand out. "Purple. But I also really like the color of your eyes and hair. But color purple makes them stand out even more on you." He told her and he smiled a little when he saw her smile.
"What is your favorite color?" Castiel asked her. She looked him straight into the eyes making sure he got her meaning. "Blue." She whispered to him. Castiel smiled at her and brought his hand back to her face and he cupped her cheek in his hand. "Can I kiss you?" He asked in a whisper moving closer to her. Adeline put down her feet and turned to the angel and brought her face closer to his. "What do you think?" She asked back in a whisper grinning at him. Castiel smiled and moved closer to her and his thumb brushed against her cheek and their lips had just touched lightly. When Sam gasped out loudly from the bed.
Adeline dropped the glass she was holding and stood up at the same time with a curse and looked over at her younger brother who was now breathing. Adeline let go of Castiel's hand reluctantly just before Dean sat up gasping for air. The brothers looked at each other then they turned over to Adeline and Castiel who were watching them with perplexed looks on their faces. Dean looked down and saw the glass around Adeline's bare feet. "Ads, get away from there carefully, there's broken glass around your feet." Dean told her and Adeline raised an eyebrow at him. Then stepped over the glass careful not to get any in her feet she misplaced her foot and cursed as she felt a sliver of glass in her heel.
Castiel looked over at her worried then he grabbed her by the waist surprising everyone and set her on the table so he could see and pull the glass out of her foot. Adeline had felt a rush of heat at the grip he had on her and looked down at Castiel surprised then she turned to her brothers.
"So did you find God?" She asked them then winced as Cas pulled out the piece of glass. Sam and Dean looked over at each other and Adeline frowned. This couldn't be good she thought recognizing the look. Castiel stood back up and turned around to face her brothers to hear what they have found.
"Joshua told us that God sent him a message to tell us…It was Back off." Dean answered then told him all what Joshua had told them. When he was done he saw Castiel's crestfallen face.
"Maybe Joshua was wrong." Castiel argued halfheartedly. "He wasn't, Cas." Sam told him softly. Castiel looked up, "You son of a bitch!" he started out strongly then he looked defeated and Adeline hopped of the table and walked closer to the crestfallen angel. "I believed in you." He said softly then grabbed something out of his pocket and gave it back to Dean. "I don't need this anymore, it's worthless." Castiel told him then turned towards the door and Adeline grabbed his hand. "You can't go off alone." She whispered to him. Just as Sam called him back but the two of them had gone.
"He took Addy." Sam told him but Dean just sighed and picked up Addy's bag. "Doesn't matter, we'll get ahold of her later." Dean told his brother too upset about the news they just found out to care what Cas and his sister were off to.
"Dean, we'll find a way to stop Lucifer." He told his brother. "How?" Dean asked him. "I don't know Dean but, we'll find a way together."
Dean looked over at Sam coldly then walked over to the trashcan in the middle of the motel and dropped the amulet and Sam watched him leave hurt at the action. Wondering if his brother was giving up. He grabbed his and Dean's bag and followed him out the door. Worried about Dean, Cas and Adeline.
