XXI. Midnight

It was midnight before Sirius saw Marlene again.

She stormed into the common room, eyes red and puffy (and still somehow beautiful) and flicked up to her dormitory without so much as a glare at him.

"I don't think she secretly loves me," he said to James.

"No, it doesn't look like it."

He shrugged. "Oh well. There are plenty of other girls. Alice. Lily."

"Not Lily," James said immediately. "I want Lily."

"All right, Lily's yours, then."

They both gazed into the fire. "I'm going to sleep," Sirius said finally. "I'll see you in the morning for breakfast."

"Night."
