Chapter 20
Newton
First day of school. Monday, August 20, 2001. 7 AM.
Today is the first day of school. Second grade should be interesting. A couple of weeks ago, I met my teacher and I got a chance to see the classroom at the open house. Her name is Mrs. Jones. She's a nice young lady. I think I'll have fun this school year.
I bumped into some of my old classmates at the open house. Some of them are going to have the same teacher as me. Plus, I'll get to make new friends. Mom and dad encourage me to make new friends.
I get dressed after taking a quick bath and go downstairs with my nearly weightless bag. My parents are in the kitchen, eating breakfast and drinking coffee.
"Morning." I say, as I go to the table and put my bag on the floor beside a seat.
"Morning. Are you excited for your first day of school?" Dad asks.
"Yeah, I think this year will be a lot of fun." I reply.
"That's good, Jadelyn." Mom says, smiling. I smile back and get myself a bowl of cereal.
After breakfast, I leave to go to my bus stop. Mom got a job, so now I need to ride the bus to and from school. I found out my bus stop at the open house. I say bye to my parents as they leave for work as I walk to the bus stop.
8:30.
The bell rings and I stand outside my classroom, waiting for Mrs. Jones to open the door for all of us. I met up with some of my classmates who I have in my class this year. They all had pretty good summers. Mine was decent. Got to cool off a few times. I did that by running through the sprinklers in the backyard as they ran.
The classroom door opens and Mrs. Jones appears at the door.
"Good morning, class. Come on in and find your names on your seats." She says with a big smile. We all walk in slowly. I look in the classroom as I walk inside and it's the same as it was when I first saw it a few weeks ago, the only difference being the white note cards on top of the little desks. I look around and I find my name on a desk in the third row from the front of the class. I take my backpack off and sit down in my desk. One of my friends from last year, Cooper, sits on my left. I smile at him and he smiles back shyly. He was always shy. Hasn't changed it looks.
A girl sits next to me on my right. I look at her. She wasn't in my class last year. But that's not what's bothering me. She looks a lot like me. Her black hair is long like mine and she has it curled a little like I do; her eyes are blue. She shares similar facial features with me. She's cute. She looks at me, confused.
"Why are you staring at me?" she asks.
"Sorry, it's just that you look a lot like me and it's kinda weird." I reply. She studies my face for a while.
"Yeah, it is a little weird." She says.
"Yeah, sorry about staring. I'm Jadelyn." I say.
"That's a pretty name. I'm Riley Newton." The girl says, offering her hand and I shake it.
"Nice to meet you, Riley." I reply.
"Same to you, Jadelyn." Riley says.
The rest of the class finds their seats and chat for a while before Mrs. Jones does roll call.
"Alright, that's everyone." Mrs. Jones says, putting down the clipboard with our names on it. She clears her throat. "Now, as our first day of school; I'm going to pass out these sheets of papers. They have squares and in them that have certain traits. You're all to get up and mingle with the class and fill out as much squares as you can in five minutes."
Mrs. Jones passes out the papers and I look at the squares when I get a paper. They all have traits like, favorite food, color, movie, those sort of things.
"Alright, time starts…now." Mrs. Jones says and she starts a timer for five minutes. The entire class gets up and walks around, chatting each other up and filling out the squares. I turn to Riley.
"Hey, Riley, wanna be partners for this?" I ask her. She looks at me and smiles.
"Yeah, sure." She replies. I smile. We talk and find out that we all have a lot of similar likes and dislikes. She likes horror movies, but she hasn't seen The Scissoring, which is my absolute favorite.
"You haven't seen it?" I ask her.
"No, I haven't. Is it good?" She asks.
"It's awesome. Wanna come over after school to see it?" I ask.
"Yeah, you have me interested." She replies.
"Cool. Now back to this thing." I say. Riley has a twin brother, Vincent, who's in a different classroom. She's older by a few minutes, but Vincent is protective of her. I think that's sweet.
"Alright, class, time's up. Please take your seats and pass your papers up to the person at the front of your row." Mrs. Jones says. Riley and I didn't leave where our seats are, so we sit down easily. I pass my paper up to the kid in front of me and I receive papers from the kids behind me and I pass them forward as well.
Lunch.
After the bell rang for lunch, the entire class goes to the cafeteria to get food. I walk with Riley and we get food together and sit down. I start to eat my food, but she looks around. I look up at her.
"Looking for Vincent?" I ask her.
"Yeah." She replies, without looking at me.
"What does he look like? Maybe I can help." I offer.
"He looks like me, but more…boyish." She replies. I chuckle a little. I put my food down and I look around. She and I are sitting opposite each other, so we're looking behind the other.
I spot him, I think. It's a boy who looks a lot like her from what I can tell from here, but as she said more boyish. I tap Riley and she looks at me.
"Is that him right there?" I ask, pointing to the boy, who's looking around.
"Yeah that's him. Vinny!" Riley replies. The boy turns to our direction and smiles when he sees us. He walks over to us and sits down next to Riley.
"Hey, sister. Who's your pretty friend here?" He asks. I blush a little. He's pretty cute, now that I can see his face up close. He has blue eyes, short black hair and similar facial features as Riley.
"This is Jadelyn, she sits next to me in class." Riley introduces me.
"Hi." I say, offering my hand. He takes it and shakes it.
"I'm Vinny." He says.
"How's your teacher?" Riley asks.
"He's pretty cool. How's yours?" Vinny replies.
"She's sweet." Riley replies.
"Schweet." He replies.
"So, Vinny; Riley's coming to my place after school today, wanna come with?" I offer him.
"Yeah, sure. Mom and dad told us to make new friends. We moved here from Colorado last month." He replies.
"Oh, cool. What's it like?" I ask, interested.
"It's a nice place." Riley replies.
"It's like a desert, so it gets hot a lot, but all in all, it's a nice place to live." Vinny adds.
"Why'd you move here? You seem to miss it there." I ask, curious.
"Our parents got promoted at work and we had to move here." Riley replies, a little sad.
"I understand; I moved here from Pasadena. It's not very far from LA, but I liked it there." I reply.
"Yeah? Are you new here or have you been here a while?" Vinny asks.
"I've been here almost two years now." I reply.
For all of lunch and recess, we talk about ourselves and we have a lot of fun. I think Vinny has a crush on me; he seems a little nervous around me and tries to say impressive things about himself. Riley just laughs and makes him feel bad, if he says something over the top and tells me what really happened. Correction, Vinny has a crush on me.
After school. West residence.
So the first day of school is over. The first day is supposed to go fast, but I think it went kinda slow, but not painfully slow. I think I'll have a lot of fun this year. We're gonna learn a lot of stuff.
Riley, Vinny, and me rode the bus to my stop and we walk to my place. We get there and go indie.
"Wow, this is a nice place you got here." Vinny compliments.
"Thanks." I say. "Make yourselves at home, I'll get some snacks and drinks."
"You have Fruit Roll-ups?" Riley asks.
"Now, what kind of a friend and host would I be to not have that?" I ask, jokingly.
"A terrible one?" Vinny jokes. We all laugh. I go into the kitchen and grab the snacks and some soda for us. I come out and pass out the drinks and food. We all drink and eat a little.
"So, where's this movie?" Riley asks.
"In my room, I'll go get it." I reply.
"What movie?" Vinny asks.
"The Scissoring. It's a horror movie." I reply.
"How scary is it?" Vinny asks a little serious. Yup, there it is. Riley did say he's a little protective of her.
"Vinny, I love horror movies." Riley says.
"I just don't want you having nightmares, because then you crawl into my bed at night." Vinny sighs and I stifle a chuckle.
"Well, you're a boy, you're supposed to protect me from the scary monsters."
"That's dad's job; beside you're older so you should be protecting me." Vinny says. I laugh and Riley and Vinny get into an argument. I laugh as I go upstairs to my room and grab the VHS that has the movie in it. I go back downstairs, still chuckling a little. They're still at it, and they've gotten a little louder. I had to clap my hands loudly several times to get their attention. They cross their arms and give each other angry looks and look in opposite directions.
"Hmph." They both say together. Yikes, that's scary how they did all that at the same time. I sigh and put the movie in and turn the TV on.
We watch the movie and they both liked it. I think Riley was faking about liking it to make me feel better. Vinny probably faked too, because of his crush. Whatever. I have some new friends now.
Between you and me, I think Riley likes me a little more than friends. I can't explain it, but I got this weird feeling. I've noticed her giving me these…looks. Like I said, I can't explain it.
Chapter 20. Comment or review plz or whatever. Whaddya think of Jadelyn's and Riley's first interaction?
