The Ugly Truth
Bonnie leans over towards Lennox slightly, lowering her voice to a whisper.
"So, you are going to college right?" Bonnie pauses as her eyes flicker to the man standing at the front of the class. He has been trying to convince the bunch of freshmen to take the college route for the past twenty minutes.
Lennox scoffs quietly. "My dad would kill me if I didn't go. Plus college life seems fun: the booze, the parties… the boys. You can count me in."
"What about Tyler?" Bonnie raises an eyebrow. Lennox glances at her best friend out of the corner of her eye.
"If Tyler and I somehow make it that far, then I'll just have to make the terrible sacrifice of giving up a few hot and heavy nights with fellow college hotties." Lennox winks playfully as she tosses her hair over her shoulder. Bonnie muffles her quiet laugh with her hand.
"Do you two ladies have a question or are you just interrupting my speech for no reason?" The college representative gestures to Bonnie and Lennox.
Bonnie slumps down in her chair, embarrassed as Lennox straightens her back. She flashes a wide grin at the representative and leans forward onto her elbows.
"Actually, I do have a question…" Lennox scrunches her nose. The man seems surprised but shakes it off quickly.
"Um… okay. What is it?"
Lennox starts to twirl one of her ringlets between her fingers. "What's the college's rules about students dating professors?"
The class breaks out in broken laughter as the visitor searches for his words.
"It's frowned upon." He answers quietly.
Lennox sighs loudly. "Well, that's a bust."
"I never imagined my first college campus visit would be under these circumstances." Lennox groans as she steps out of the car. She helps Bonnie get out of the backseat and shuts the door.
"What? Were you hoping for something more elite?" Damon smiles as he rounds the hood of his car. Lennox glances over her shoulder, a small smile forming on her lips.
"No. I guess I was just hoping for a better chaperone."
Bonnie doesn't bother to muffle her laugh. She peers around her, taking in the seemingly normal college life.
"We should probably find Professor Shane." Bonnie sighs quietly. Lennox steps beside her and wraps an arm around her shoulders.
"Take a moment to soak it all in, Bonnie. In less than a year, this is the kind of life you'll be living." Lennox squeezes Bonnie's shoulders lightly.
"Me? You mean us." Bonnie turns to her friend. Lennox pinches her eyebrows together.
"I don't think college is on my future 'to do' list." Lennox laughs it off as Damon steps in front of them.
"Just because you're a vampire, doesn't mean you don't get to go through all the human experiences… even the not so fun ones." Damon gestures around him and looks back at Lennox. "Plus, if I did it, so could you."
"Are you trying to tell me that you, Damon Salvatore, went to college?" Lennox narrows her eyes, unbelieving. Damon smirks knowingly.
"Sorority girls were always my biggest fans." Damon's eyes drop for a second as his smile widens. "I wonder why?"
Lennox pretends gag. "If this conversation continues on this route, I'm pretty sure I'm going to barf."
She links arms with Bonnie and walks around Damon.
"Come on, it's not like you don't know what I'm talking about." Damon calls after the two girls as he walks after them. Lennox doesn't break her step while she responds.
"All I see is an old man reveling in his glory days." Lennox pauses. "But those days are long gone and I sure hope that those poor sorority girls have forgotten the nightmarish experience they had with you."
"No one can forget about me, sweetheart, unless I want them to." Damon falls into step next to Lennox.
"Then I hope you do mankind a favor and make everyone forget." Lennox clears her throat but keeps her tone playful. "Especially me."
Damon and Bonnie share look as Lennox continues on her own. She peers back over her shoulder and points to the building to her left.
"I'm going to go see if I can find the little girls room." Lennox says before striding off.
Damon turns to Bonnie. "What was that about?"
Bonnie's eyes follow Lennox into the stone building behind Damon. Even she's concerned about her friend. "I don't know. Wait here."
She hurries after Lennox, leaving Damon alone. He looks around as he sighs.
"Since when did I become the third wheel?"
"What was that about back there?" Bonnie asks as Lennox walks out of her stall. She never actually needed to use the bathroom. She just needed some alone time.
Lennox shrugs and walks over to the sink. She starts washing her hands as she speaks. "I don't know what you're talking about."
"Come on, Lennox. We've been friends since forever. I know when something is up… and so does Damon." Bonnie leans against the sink next to Lennox's.
She pulls a paper towel out of the dispenser and dries her hands quickly. She throws it into the trash without looking and glances at the stalls afraid someone might be eavesdropping.
"No one is in here. I already checked." Bonnie gestures to the stalls. Lennox bites down on her lower lip as she fights to decide if she wants to tell her best friend the ugly truth.
"Being here makes me miss my humanity." Lennox takes a long deep breath as she tries to sort out her emotions. "For the longest time, all I was really sure about was that I wanted to go to college and make my parents proud. That's why I studied so hard and did all that extracurricular shit. It was to get here. But now… now what am I supposed to do?"
"You heard Damon. You can go to college as a vampire. It is possible." Bonnie tells her.
"I can barely go to high school as a vampire, Bonnie. How am I going to be able to go to college?" Lennox shrugs. It's a serious question but she knows that Bonnie wont know how to answer it.
"That's why we're here with Damon. He's going to try to help you get this under control."
Lennox scoffs. "Damon's the one who put me on this path."
"I thought you forgave him…" Bonnie narrows her eyes.
"Forgiving and forgetting are two different things." Lennox pauses. "I don't want to be angry at him anymore but it's hard when I'm being reminded of all things that I'm going to miss out on."
"Look," Bonnie places a reassuring hand on Lennox's shoulder. "As much as I hate to say it, Damon might be able to help you figure this out. You… we need to trust him for now and let him at least try to fix it. And who knows, maybe by the end of this trip, going to college together might be a possibility."
Lennox and Bonnie stay a few feet ahead of Damon as they make their way to Professor Shane's class. Bonnie opens the door and Lennox starts to follow her inside. When Damon's hand wraps around her arm, she gets pulled away from the door. Bonnie halts in the doorway, giving Damon a suspicious look.
"We need to talk." Damon keeps a secure hold on Lennox's arm. She studies his face as she tries to figure out what his intentions are. She sighs after a few seconds and glances at Bonnie.
Lennox nods, gesturing to the class. "Go ahead. We'll be in, in a minute."
Bonnie hesitates but eventually continues into the room and closes the door behind her. Lennox whips her head back around at Damon and tears her arm out of his grasp.
"What do you want?"
"I just want to talk." Damon holds his hands up to surrender. Lennox narrows her eyes leisurely.
"About what?"
"I don't know. Maybe about why you're acting like the old you… the you that tried to kill me every chance you got." Damon exclaims quickly. Lennox can't help but roll her eyes.
"Stop being so dramatic." Lennox hums under her breath. She turns around and starts towards the door again.
Damon steps in front of her as she reaches for the knob. "Stop dodging."
Lennox drops her hand to her side. "I'm not dodging. I just don't want to talk to you… if I haven't made that obvious enough."
"There it is again." Damon laughs as he gestures to her. "I have to admit I kind of missed you're feisty side… but I didn't think it would make a comeback just for me."
Lennox scoffs as she nods, dropping her gaze to the floor. Damon steps closer to her, leaving only a couple inches between their faces.
"Now, tell me what I did so I can fix it."
Lennox swallows as she gets the urge to tell him everything. She takes a small step back before doing so.
"This isn't something you can fix, Damon. Just forget about it." Lennox makes another move for the door. Damon knocks her hand away easily.
"We can keep doing this all day if you want. It's your choice." Damon shrugs nonchalantly.
"What's your angle, Damon?" Lennox pauses. "I forgave you and we've become mutual friends. What more do you want from me?"
Several different possible responses flash through Damon's mind. He chooses the safest one. "I want you to tell me the truth. Did you really forgive me? Or did you just say you that because you thought I was dying?"
Lennox purses her lips into a thin line. "I really do forgive you for what you did. But I wont forget it, ever."
"Is that what this is about?" Damon takes a small step towards her. "You're being reminded of the things you might have to miss out on and now you're placing your frustration on me?"
"You're damn right I'm placing it on you. You're the reason I'm like this. You're the reason I will never be a normal person again."
"Why do you want to be normal when you can be supernatural?"
"Because I'm a teenage girl, Damon! And I want to be able to act like one." Lennox exclaims in a hushed voice.
"But you're not anymore. You're a vampire, Lennox." Damon leans down slightly. "And you need to accept it."
"I have accepted it, Damon. That's why I'm mad." Lennox shakes her head. She can tell that Damon doesn't understand. "I have accepted what I am and that I will never be able to change it."
Damon's shoulders fall as his gaze drops to the floor. "I'm sorry, Lennox. I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm a thousand times sorry."
A small pang of guilt hits Lennox. She reaches down and takes his hand, drawing his eyes up to meet hers. "I forgive you, Damon. I do. But I can't pretend that I enjoy being a monster."
Damon tries to think of someway to respond. When he draws a blank, he just nods.
"Right now, I just want to get through this trip without killing anyone." Lennox mutters under her breath before walking to the door. She grabs the knob and glances over her shoulder at Damon. "You coming?"
Damon forces a smile as he follows her into the classroom.
"You okay?" Bonnie whispers as Lennox sits in the seat next to her.
She nods. "I'm fine. Just a little…"
"Hungry?" Damon leans over slightly so both girls can hear him.
Lennox throws him a look, not bothering to neither confirm nor deny his remark.
Her eyes land on the middle aged man standing at the front of the class. His dark curly hair and green eyes give him a handsome appearance.
"That's the professor?" Lennox questions quietly. Bonnie smiles slowly.
"Yep."
"I hope he's still teaching in a year."
Bonnie glances at Lennox. "Does that mean college is a possibility?"
"We'll see." Lennox hums.
They both peer back down at Professor Shane. Lennox tunes in as he continues to teach. She finds herself amused by his knowledge of witches. It comes off as if he really does believe in the supernatural.
"What is this guy, Witch-apedia?" Damon whispers into Lennox's ear. A small laugh escape escapes her lips before she can stop herself.
"Shhh, shut up." Bonnie tells them abruptly. Lennox drops her eyes to her lap as Professor drones on about believing in witches.
She sits back in her seat and glances at Damon.
"When are you going to start teaching me how not to be a ripper?"
"Now." Damon pauses as he meets her eyes. He gestures past her with a small nod. "Pick one."
Lennox tears her eyes away from Damon to look around the large room. Her eyes bounce over a few people before settling on a boy sitting towards the front of the class. Damon follows her gaze.
"Stoner guys are a no-go. They can be paranoid and you don't want the extra buzz." Damon tells her quietly. Lennox purses her lips as she continues to search the crowd.
She spots a small girl wearing glasses further down the same row.
"Geeky girls are suspicious of anyone who is nice to them." Damon instructs her. Hesitantly, he places an arm around Lennox's shoulders and points at different girl. She grabs onto her knee to stop herself from sending an elbow into his nose. "What you want is the pretty ones. Self absorbed, easily flattered, all you have to do is separate her from the pack and make your move."
"Am I interrupting you guys?" Professor Shane asks loudly. It takes Lennox a second to realize that he's talking to her and Damon.
Lennox squirms under Damon's arm as she feels dozens of eyes land on her. Despite Lennox's obvious discomfort, Damon leaves his arm around her shoulder.
"Or is it the other way around?" Professor Shane smiles at them. Lennox drops her eyes again.
"I was just saying how much I love witches." Damon returns the professors smile.
"You and me both, brother."
Professor Shane shakes his head lightly as he addresses the entire class. "Now, lets talk about the…"
Lennox brings her arm forward slowly and then elbows Damon in the stomach. He drops his arm immediately.
"Ouch."
"I can't." Lennox shakes her head.
Damon keeps his eyes on the blonde girl walking a few feet in front of them. "I'll be right here if you need me."
"And what if you're not fast enough?"
"You don't need to worry about my speed." Damon pauses. "Now, go on."
Lennox takes a steady breath before speeding up her pace. When she gets close enough, she grabs the girl's shoulder lightly.
"Hey." Lennox smiles as the blonde turns around. "I was just wondering where you got your shoes. They're totally cute."
The girl glances down at her shoes and flashes a flattered smile. "Oh, thanks. I got them at this little boutique downtown."
"I'll have to check it out sometime." Lennox's smile drops off her lips. She leans in towards the girl to compel her. "Don't scream. This isn't going to hurt."
Lennox fixates her eyes on the girl's neck. The beating sound of her heart reaches her ears a second later. When a violent image pops into Lennox's head, she steps away from the girl.
"Forget this and go to class." Lennox compels quickly before she can change her mind. The girl walks off confused.
"What are you doing?" Damon comes up behind Lennox. She turns around to face him.
"I couldn't do it. Not without hurting her."
"How do you know that?" Damon questions.
"Because I saw it. I saw myself hurting her and I knew I would enjoy it." Lennox admits quietly.
"Of course you would enjoy it. You're a vampire. You just have to learn how to control that pleasure." Damon says as he takes her hand. "And that's what I'm going to help you with."
"What's going on?"
Lennox looks over Damon's shoulder. Bonnie stops a few feet behind him.
"Nothing." Lennox responds quickly. She steps around Damon. "Did you talk to the professor?"
Bonnie gives them a skeptical look but nods. "For a minute. He said he would dig up some things of Grams he found in his office."
She reaches into her bag and pulls out a flyer. She shows it to Lennox and Damon. "Some frat guy gave me this."
Lennox takes it out of her hand studying the fraternity murder house party. Damon smiles lightly.
"It will be the perfect place to practice." Damon looks down at Lennox, his smile growing. "You'll be eating very well tonight."
Bonnie and Lennox share a glance as he continues. "So, are we going as victims or killers?"
"Stefan isn't answering my calls. It keeps going straight to voicemail." Lennox mutters under her breath as she walks towards the fraternity house.
Bonnie purses her lips. "Maybe his phone died… or something."
"I'd go with, or something." Damon says. He falls into step next to Lennox causing her to roll her eyes. "Looks like my brother isn't really worried that you're here with me."
"He doesn't have anything to worry about." Lennox shrugs as she loops her arm through Bonnie's. She picks up her pace, pulling her best friend along.
When they walk through the door, an older boy greets them. He offers the drinks in his hands.
"Hey, I'm Frankie, unassuming serial killer."
Lennox takes two drinks, handing one to Bonnie. Damon takes one for himself.
"I'm Jack." He pauses to gesture at Lennox and Damon. "And these are the girls I just… rippered."
"Welcome to the murder house, Bloody Mary's free until midnight. Enjoy yourselves." Frankie smiles at each of them before walking off. Lennox drops her gaze to the Bloody Mary in her hands. She takes a long drink, knowing it might help with her intensifying craving.
"Well, hats off to these idiots." Damon mutters as he removes the hat on his head only to replace it a second later. "Oh, look it's Professor Creepy."
Lennox follows Damon's stare to the top of the staircase. Sure enough, Professor Shane is standing with a few students.
"His name is Professor Shane. And he's not creepy." Bonnie tells Damon as she looks up at the Professor. She hands Lennox her drink and flashes her a smile. "I'm going to go talk to him."
"You do that." Damon mumbles as Bonnie walks up the stairs to Professor Shane.
Lennox walks into the next room, Damon following close on her heels.
"Inebriated sleezeballs all covered in blood… come on. Pick one." Damon whispers to Lennox. She starts watching the people dancing and socializing throughout the room.
Her eyes linger on a guy obviously flirting with a girl. As she turns to say hello to a friend, Lennox catches the guy dropping a pill into her drink.
"Found one." Lennox glances at Damon then looks back at the guy.
"Roofie guy?" Damon tries to clarify.
Lennox nods. "Yep."
"Go get him." Damon tells her. "I'll be nearby."
Lennox takes a deep breath before starting through the crowd. She quickly makes her way to the roofie guy. As she takes a step past him, she deliberately bumps into him.
She mimics an apologetic look. "Oh… I'm sorry."
When the guy smiles, Lennox knows she's hooked him.
"Drink?" She offers the guy Bonnie's drink with a flirtatious smirk.
"Sure." He takes it from her hand, their fingers brushing. Lennox bats her eyes a couple times before walking past him.
She smiles to herself when she hears him follow her into the next room.
"Great party, right?" Roofie guy walks towards her.
She turns on her heels to face him, a smile already on her lips. "Yeah."
Lennox grabs him quickly and throws him against the wall. She leans in slowly, her pupils dilating. "You're not going to make a sound."
She feels her canine teeth extend into fangs and she doesn't hesitate to dig them into the roofie guy's neck.
"How do you feel?" Damon watches Lennox closely. She smiles as she wipes the blood off her chin. She licks the crimson liquid off her finger and her smile widens.
"I fed without wanting to hurt him. You helped me do it, Damon." Lennox pauses. "I feel… I feel amazing."
Lennox doesn't stop herself when she gets the urge to hug Damon. She throws her arms around his neck, brushing her lips against his ear.
"Thank you." She whispers quietly. Damon wraps his arms around her waist and pulls her closer to him. He leans his head on her shoulder, taking a second to enjoy her good mood. "I want more."
Damon's POV…
For the first time in a while, I'm really enjoying myself. I don't know if it's because of the free flowing blood or because of her.
As I retract my fangs from the college girl I had been dancing with, I can't stop from looking at Lennox. She's smiling. But it's a real smile. Not the thing she's been giving everyone for the past couple weeks.
I release my human blood bag from my compulsion and make my way through the crowd of intoxicated college kids. I don't know what it is about Lennox, but I'm always feeling this need to be closer to her. It's as if any distance between us is too much. I don't know if it's the part of me that just wants to be forgiven, or the part of me that already cares for her.
When I met Lennox for the first time, I immediately thought she was almost exactly like Katherine. The hair, the hidden meaning in her eyes, the devious smile, none of that helped proved me otherwise. But then I really met her. And I found out that there was more to her than just her rough exterior.
Over the time I have spent trying to get closer to the younger Gilbert twin, I have come to realize that she's not just like Katherine or just like Elena. She has managed to mix both of the doppelgangers personalities perfectly within herself. While Lennox can be mean and feisty she can also be caring and compassionate. She can make me want to hate her but then care for her at the same time.
I don't know what exactly does it, but something about Lennox Gilbert intrigues me.
Her smile widens when I reach her in the middle of the room. She wraps her arms around my neck like she had done when she hugged me. I like seeing her enjoy herself. And I'm happy to know that I helped her be able to let go.
Lennox's POV…
I'm dancing. Like really dancing. And I'm having fun. My head feels fuzzy but I feel energized. A part of me wants to stop and leave and a different part of me wants to keep dancing. I'm not sure if it's because of the fact that I have learned to control my bloodlust or because of Damon, but something's making me want to stay. So I do.
When I see Damon walking through the crowd, all I can think about is that I want him to enjoy this party too. I wrap my arms around his neck once he's close enough for me to reach. I continue to dance with Damon even as he slings his arms around my waist.
The fresh blood covering his neck beckons me to have a taste. So I run my hand through the crimson liquid and lick it off my fingertips with a small smile. I know I'm really enjoying his company for once.
But then I see Bonnie. Her face says it all; she's shocked. And just like that, the fog clears in my head.
Stefan.
I break all contact with Damon and step away from him. I don't know if it was all the blood or the party but it made me forget about one of the most important persons in my life. I look around as I wipe the blood on my hands onto my dress, not caring about staining it.
Bonnie.
I look up and meet her eyes. Her shocked expression has turned into worry. I know what she's thinking. But I don't want to think about it.
Damon.
When I meet his eyes again, he smiles. It's sincere and it makes a part of me want to continue partying with him but I can't. He lifts his hand to my cheek and I hesitate to back off. But I do.
I turn on my heels and walk past Bonnie out of the room. She follows closely as I leave the house. I start wiping all the blood off me, even the fake blood. I have to realize that it is my weakness and it always will be.
Bonnie's POV…
I jog to keep up with Lennox's strong strides as she tries to get away from the house. She comes an abrupt stop when she's more than halfway across the lawn and spins to face me.
"I can't believe I did that." Lennox groans. I know she does not mean it in a positive way. "I can't believe I let myself do that…"
"It wasn't your fault. It was Damon's." I remind her quickly. I don't want her putting the blame somewhere it isn't due. "And mine. I told you to trust him and he used it against you."
I watch the light bulb go off in Lennox. "Stefan. I… I should have come with him, not Damon."
Lennox drops her head into her hands and I place a light hand on her shoulder. I can tell she isn't crying but that doesn't mean she isn't unhappy.
"We should get going." Damon's voice cuts through the silence like a saw through wood.
I turn to look at him, my accusation already hanging on my lips. I take two long steps towards him.
"You were supposed to be teaching her how to feed and you let her get completely out of control in there."
"I've seen her when she gets out of control, and that…" Damon gestures at the house. "… was not it. She was having fun."
"You call that fun?" I raise an eyebrow. "She was like a completely different person in there."
"She is a different person. She's a vampire now, not the teenage human you remember from two years ago." Damon glances at Lennox. "We're a predatory species. We enjoy the hunt, the feed, and the kill. When the guilt gets too bad we switch off our humanity and we revel in it."
"You want her to be like you so badly, that you're willing to risk her humanity." I watch him as he looks back at me. He looks angry but upset at the same time.
"She already is like me. And you know what makes me able to drink my fill and leave someone breathing and not rip their heads off like my brother? It's that I can revel in it. I make it fun." Damon explains quickly before pushing past me. I catch him stare at Elena as he walks past her.
When I see the single tear moving down her cheek, I run up to her.
"Hey…" I don't hesitate to pull her into a hug. "It's going to be okay."
"No. It's not, Bonnie." Lennox pulls away slowly. "Because he's right."
"No, he's not. He's just trying to scare you…"
"And it's working." Lennox glances over her shoulder. "He's right. And he knows it."
"What do you mean?" I narrow my eyes, slightly confused.
"His way of feeding is the only one that I've been able to use without hurting anyone." Lennox pauses as her eyes drop to the grass. "I need to be like him if I want to survive."
Damon walks beside Lennox as they ascend the stairs to the Gilbert house. After what happened at the party, she knew that staying at the Salvatore house would not be a good idea.
"Well, goodnight." Damon mutters before turning to leave. Lennox grabs his arm, stopping his escape.
"Damon, wait." She presses her lips into a thin line as he faces her again. "I'm sorry about tonight."
"There's nothing to apologize about. You got caught up in the blood." Damon forces a small smile. He makes another attempt to leave but again, Lennox stops him.
"It wasn't just the blood." She meets his eyes reluctantly. Damon realizes what she means and feels the small weight lift off his heart.
They hear the door open. Stefan walks out onto the porch a second later.
Lennox tears her eyes from Damon. "Hey."
"Hey." Stefan smiles down at her.
"What are you doing here?" Lennox narrows her eyes. Stefan sighs quietly as he glances at Damon.
"I had to talk to Jeremy and then I decided to stay a while to make sure no hunters showed up." Stefan lies easily.
"Any news on him?" Damon forces himself to look away from Lennox.
"No, nothing new." Stefan shakes his head.
"Great." Damon replies sarcastically. He catches Lennox glance at him. "Well, she's all yours."
Stefan waits until Damon's car pulls away from the house to step in front of Lennox.
"What happened?"
"It worked. I fed on people without hurting them." Lennox forces a small smile.
"How'd it feel?" Stefan prods.
"Good but scary." She pauses as her eyes drop to the floor. "It's still so new to me."
"It'll get easier." Stefan tells her as he pulls Lennox into a hug. She rests her head against his chest and wraps her arms around his waist.
"Is it supposed to?"
***So, I have a few things I need to point out.
~One: Kinley wasn't in this chapter because I wanted it to be more about Bonnie and Lennox.
~Second: Yes, Lennox is going to be moving back in with Elena and Jeremy and Kinley will also stay with them. That means four emotional teenagers in one house. Should make for some fun times.
~Third: I know a lot of you think that I'm still going to do the whole sire bond thing but with Lennox and Damon but I can't, seeing as how Lennox never had feelings for Damon before she was turned. But fear not, I have another plan in the works.
~Fourth: Even though they never really said it aloud, Lennox and Stefan are boyfriend and girlfriend. Thought I'd clear that up.
~Finally, Fifth: I'm thinking about putting this story on the backburner for a bit because I've kind of lost the drive to write it. I might just take some time to brainstorm and see if something comes up that makes me want to continue again. But if not, I might just delete and focus on my other stories.
You can still follow/favorite/review like always. Thank you all for reading and please check out my newest story called Red Road. I would really appreciate it!
