A/N: Okay so this chapter would have been finished much earlier but I had written half of the chapter, then I got the worst case of writers block and when I went to go back to write the first half hadn't saved properly. So I did my best to recreate what I had written and subsequently I think it is much better now and definitely longer than it would have been before. I hope you enjoy the chapter and I can't wait to hear what you all think.
As Daniel made his way over to where Jack was sitting he could see that his friend was very upset. He knew that if Sam didn't make it out of that room, Jack would be broken and he was certain that there would be no way to save him. Sure he would survive for Grace but he would cease to live. He would merely exist.
"Jack, you need to be with Grace." Daniel blurted out.
Daniel barely even had a chance to finish his sentence before Jack had turned around to face him, he did not look happy and too be completely honest Daniel currently feared for his life. Maybe he should have just kept his mouth shut and faced the wrath of Cassie instead of a battle seasoned General.
"Don't you dare tell me what I need right now!" Jack ran his hands through his already unruly hair. "My wife is in there right now and I will be right here when she comes out god dammit!"
Jack's face was getting redder and redder the longer Daniel stood silent and his gestures were getting bigger and bigger, he knew that if he was going to stop Jack from kicking his ass that he needed to keep talking.
When he started to explain himself, he couldn't stop himself from yelling back at Jack. It wasn't very often that Daniel got angry but he knew it would make Jack listen.
"Dammit Jack, don't you think I know that Sam is fighting for her life right now! I was there when they found her Jack and that was one of the scariest things I've ever seen. So don't you dare assume that I am not worried about her too!"
Jack tried to interrupt but Daniel was on a roll and he was going to finish what he had to say if it was the last thing he did.
"I understand that you feel like you need to be here for her right now, you always do when she is injured and you always have and always will, but there is nothing you can do to help her, unlike for Grace who is sitting in an unknown place without either of her parents. She needs you Jack and to be frank, you need her too."
Daniel had calmed down by this point and his voice was more caring than angry. Even Jack seemed to have cooled off.
To be honest he was starting to feel guilt more than anything else, in his worry for Sam it hadn't even occurred to him that Grace might be scared of the SGC, with its concrete walls and barely any people that she knew existed filled them. That would be scary for any four year old, let alone one who didn't know whether her mom was going to live or die.
Daniel felt it was safe to approach him now, he had visibly calmed down and Daniel felt like he needed to comfort his friend.
"Look Jack, if it makes you feel better I'll stay here and as soon as there is any news, you'll have it, I promise. I'm sure that if it makes you feel better you could even bring Grace to sit with you out here but I think it would be better to stay in Sam's quarters."
Jack looked up at his long-time friend and was grateful that they'd stuck by each other for all these years, he wasn't sure he would have gotten through this past week without him.
"No, you're right Daniel."
Daniel's head jerked up at that, it wasn't often that the great Jack O'Neill admits to being wrong and it was even rarer for him to admit that someone was right, especially Daniel.
"Wait! What?"
The corner of Jack's mouth lifted at the classic look of confusion on Daniel's face. "I am not repeating myself Danny Boy, you heard me. I need to be with Grace right now and I trust that you will keep me informed."
Just like that Jack had left the room, on his way to his wife's quarters. Daniel could hardly believe that his argument worked but then again, Jack would do anything for his little girl.
Grace and Teal'c sat huddled together on the big couch in the living area of Sam's quarters. When Cassie had walked in a few minutes ago they hadn't even moved to acknowledge her presence
She went straight over to the little kitchenette and opened the small bar fridge, it was stocked with food and drinks for Grace which she presumed either Sargent Siler or Harriman or both had put in there for her. She would have to remember to thank them later. She grabbed an apple juice for Grace and the jug of cold water for herself and Teal'c and walked back into the living area. She placed the glasses on the table, filled them and then placed the jug down too and handed the juice to Teal'c so that she could take Grace and sit on the couch next to him.
As soon as she sat down Teal'c handed over Grace, the young girl was visibly tired, she'd had a long day and had presumably been crying for most of the morning. She went to Cassie easily and once again snuggled up to the adult holding her, Teal'c handed the juice over to Cassie and she in turn handed it to Grace.
Grace was so thirsty, she hadn't had anything to drink since this morning, the juice was nice and cold and the sugar would do her good as well. When she finished the drink she handed her cup to Teal'c who placed it onto the coffee table for her.
When Cassie looked down a few minutes later Grace had fallen asleep, the poor girl had been through so much and right now there was nothing anyone could do to help her except give her the comfort she needed.
A couple of minutes passed before Teal'c looked across at the young woman sitting next to him and he realised just how lucky he'd been to meet her. That young girl and the then Captain Carter all those years ago taught him how to truly feel compassion. When Sam had been willing to sacrifice her own life for a child she barely knew, he took the time to get to know her and became quite close to the young girl from Hanka. She taught him that his past wasn't who he was and despite knowing he was a Jaffa she still considered him a friend because he showed her compassion when she was at her most vulnerable.
After her adoptive mother died she had turned to Sam for comfort but having to face the possible death of another mother figure in her life was nearly too much for her to handle. Despite her pain she was trying to be strong for the closest thing she had to a sister, she knew how hard it was to lose a mother so she would try her hardest to lessen her pain.
"How are you faring Cassandra Fraiser."
After the long silence between the two adults, his voice startled her.
"Ah you know, it's hard to just sit here but I have been through it all before. I just never expected it to be Sam, she always seemed so ... indestructible, you know?"
Teal'c bowed his head in agreement. "Indeed Colonel Carter is very strong and recovers quickly from her injuries. As I believe she will do this time."
Cassie looked at the Jaffa, unsure as to whether or not he was just trying to reassure her or if he truly believed what he was saying.
"You truly believe that Teal'c?"
Teal'c lowered his gaze to the young girl asleep in Cassie's lap. "I must," he stated earnestly.
"And she will!" Jack had heard the tail end of their conversation and knew that he not only had to reassure himself but also Cassie that Teal'c's words were true.
He stepped further into the room and closed the door behind him. "It's Sam! She always pulls through, always."
Cassie and Teal'c were both staring at him, he could tell both Cass and Grace had been crying but he was glad his daughter was sleeping. Teal'c on the other hand looked weary and about ready to collapse, Jack knew that he wouldn't rest until they got news of Sam's condition, much like the rest of SG-1. So he sat down on the couch next to Cassie and pulled her into his side.
She let out a breath that she hadn't realised she had been holding and finally let her body relax against Jack. It felt good to be in his familiar embrace, it was so comforting, there was nothing better than a Jack O'Neill hug when you're upset.
Cassie looked up at the man sitting next to her, she had never seen him this distressed before and it was difficult to see him like that to say the least.
"Had you got any news before you left?"
Jack took a deep breath and shook his head. "No but Daniel is still there and he said he would let us know as soon as they knew anything more."
It was at that moment that Daniel came charging into the room clearly out of breath.
"She's out! Sam is out of surgery!"
A/N: CLIFFHANGER! Sorry about that, but this is how I pictured this chapter finishing as soon as I knew that I wanted Sam to get out of surgery. I hope you all liked this chapter and let me know what you think.
