"How the hell is it colder here than in New York?" Olivia asked with a bouncing jaw as they walked out of the airport to their rented car for the week. She was bundled up in a sweatshirt and a parka, and she was still trying to keep warm by hugging herself. Nick's teeth chattered behind her and just made her feel colder.
Elliot chuckled at her before opening the trunk of the car and putting his duffle inside before taking everybody else's. "Liv, the city produces heat just using that much electricity. It's going to be colder here. Besides, it's only October. It's going to be much colder here during the holiday season."
"Well, we aren't staying that long." Olivia stated before seeing SJ and Dickie huddled together next to the car. Harry and Wilber had stayed behind to keep things under control with their father's office, even though he didn't deserve it. "Remember, you are only here so you can be there for your mother after we find her. You aren't joining us on anything. That's why we let you bring Dickie. He will prevent you from doing anything stupid."
SJ rolled her eyes. "Like he can take me." Dickie frowned at her while Elliot tried to cover up his laugh. "She's my mom. I'm going to help find her."
Olivia shoved her gloved hands into her pockets. "Not without my say so. Got it?"
SJ scowled while Elliot gave her a look, telling her to follow orders. "Fine. I will lay low."
"G-good girl-l-l." Dickie stuttered while his knees shook. "Unlock the f-f-fucking c-car."
Elliot laughed before getting into the driver's seat. "It's been unlocked the whole time." Olivia slid into the passenger seat and buckled before exhaling, gasping when she saw her own breath. "This is going to be a long trip."
"We're here." Evan said before pulling into a long rock driveway. It was a fenced in farmhouse like he said. Trees lined the driveway leading up to the porch enclosed house. The two story white sided house looked like it had just been built, but the barn behind it proved just how long it had been sitting there. "I really hope you like it here."
"It's beautiful." Tina whispered as he pulled up in from the steps. Before she could open her door, Evan was suddenly opening it for her. "Thank you." She whispered. Her brain screamed at her. This was so wrong. All of this was wrong. If he had done this back when they were having an affair, she would've swore everything would be fine. But, she now knew this was the place she was going to stay the rest of her life if nobody found her. Depending on what Evan's temper was like now, her life may have an expiration date. For now, she just needed to keep him happy without putting herself in danger.
Evan stepped closer to her and kissed her forehead before slipping his hand into hers. "C'mon, I'll give you the tour." He saw the hesitation in her eyes, but there was no fear. "I promise; I won't hurt you."
Tina felt her throat start constricting, her eyes get itchy. She blinked a few times before nodding her head. "Alright." She felt herself gripping his hand tighter as they entered the house even though she wanted to get as far away from him as she could.
Once the light turned on, she couldn't believe how perfect the house was. Wood floors, beautiful detail carvings, modern appliances and furniture, the whole place was how she described it to him all those years ago. Evan grinned at her and started pointing around. "I had the whole inside redone once I bought it. Nobody had lived in it for years. The cabinets and appliances are new. I got all new furniture for the place a few years ago. I found every old picture of us and put them around the house. Some of them I had to stash in our bedroom." He smirked at her before letting go of her hand and opening up everything. "I have someone come by to take care of the house and animals. I told her to stock the cabinets. We have cereals and meats and bread. I just can't believe you're finally here. I got all of our favorite movies and organized them alphabetically for you. I know it bugged you when I didn't do that."
Tina giggled. "That was with your files, goofball. The thought is sweet though." She looked into the living room, smiling at warm family feeling it gave her. She had always wanted a house like this. A house like her parents that just showed that it was a home for a family. Her eyes looked around the kitchen and stopped at the dark doorway between the counter and fridge. "What's in there?"
"Oh, that is the best part." Evan grinned before going over to her and taking her hands. "Close your eyes." Tina stared up at him. He just smiled down at her with that goofy crooked grin she remembered craving to see in between meetings. "Close." He kissed her forehead. "Your." He pressed his forehead to her own and looked into her eyes. "Eyes."
The fact that she could feel butterflies in her stomach made her sick, but she couldn't wipe off the smile from her face as she closed her eyes. "Show me." She breathed.
Evan kissed her nose before leading her towards the doorway. "Keep them closed." He demanded before he went to turn on the light switch. His eyes looked for any imperfections in the room before going back to her. "Alright, you can open them."
Tina slowly opened her eyes and lost her breath looking around the room. There was a large wooden dining room table sitting perfectly under the large chandelier. The walls were covered with wood panels on the bottom half while the top half was painted light green. There were two large windows leading out to the front yard and driveway right next to each other. That's when she noticed the small lights built into the porch floor in between the railing posts. Crossing her arms over her chest, she walked around the dining room table. It was gorgeous with the amount of detail put into it. "This looks like my parents' dining room table. I haven't seen it since I got pregnant with Harry. I haven't spoken to them since Harry was born."
"Well, it looks like theirs because it is." Evan stated leaning against the far wall. "I remember meeting your parents at their house when you first started working for me. They wanted to meet your fancy new boss."
"I forgot about that." Tina chuckled placing her hand on top of the dark wood.
"Well, I didn't." Evan smiled. "We started our affair that weekend. My wife wanted to spend Thanksgiving with her friends, and your parents wanted to meet me. We had dinner together at this table. All you and your father could talk about was you wanting this table in your own home someday. I remember he promised it to you."
Tina nodded tearing up. "He was a really great Dad."
Evan's smile fell when he saw her tears. He hurried over to her and cupped her face in his hands. "Hey, hey, hey, what's wrong? I thought you would love this."
"I do." Tina breathed before looking up at him. "It's just my parents basically disowned me when I got pregnant with Harry. They didn't like what I was doing. They didn't answer my calls. I wasn't allowed to visit."
"Why didn't you tell me?" Evan asked sitting down and bringing her to sit down next to him. "Babe, I wouldn't have let you do it if it cost you your parents."
Tina shook her head, wiping away her tears. "They thought I was being a surrogate for you like we told your wife. They still didn't like it. I wasn't giving up my baby, Evan. I was too young to take care of him, but I wasn't going to get rid of Harry. He's my boy."
Evan wiped away a stray tear trailing down her cheek. "Our boy." He whispered. "I bought the table from your father. I bumped into him at one of my campaign boosts a few years ago. Your mother passed away a few years before that." Tina felt more tears falling. He quickly wiped them away. "Look at me, baby. Just breathe and listen to me." Tina took a deep breath and looked at him, feeling the silent tears slide down her face as he quickly tried to wipe them away. "When I ran into him, we took a walk and talked for a long time. We talked, mainly, about you. I didn't know they had disowned you. I just figured you guys fell out of touch with you being in New York. He told me he regretted losing you as his daughter. He said he wasn't happy with all of your decisions, but he was still proud of you. He just made a hasty decision. He regrets losing you, Tina. We found that we had a lot in common that day."
"What am I going to do with you?" Tina asked staring up at him.
"What do you mean?" Evan smiled.
"You talk to my father like you're old friends. You know how to decorate a whole house as if you live inside my head. Apparently, you came to visit SJ and I in the hospital. I can tell you love me; I can feel it. I just don't know what to do with it." Tina stated before noticing a tear forming in the corner of his eyes. She wiped it away, causing his eyes to close. "What's wrong?"
Evan shook his head. "I'm happy to hear you say those words, but it tears me apart to know that I caused you so much pain. I just love you so much. I don't ever want to lose you."
Tina ran her hands down his chest, pulling back from him when she felt him lean closer to her face. Her eyes closed, his hands dropping from her face. "How did my mother die?"
"Your father said she passed away from a heart attack while she was at work." Evan breathed putting his hands on her knees. "I'm sorry I'm the one to tell you this."
"No, don't be. If you didn't, I might have never found out." Tina said shaking her head. She took one of his hands into hers. "I do love you, Evan. I just don't want to."
Evan nodded his head before kissing her hand. Tina watched as he got down on his knees and laid his head on her knees. "I'm so, so sorry, baby. I will never stop being sorry."
Tina rubbed his back with her free hand. It was odd. Whenever she was with him, he was always wearing a crisp white dress shirt or nothing at all. Now, he was wearing jeans and a worn out t-shirt. She was about to lay her head against his when she noticed the hanging black frames on the wall across the table from her. Although she already knew, she needed to hear him talk to her. "What's that?"
Evan slowly leaned back on his calves and followed her gaze. "That's our family, babe. The large one is one of the pictures taken with your parents at that Thanksgiving dinner. The bottom pictures are Harry, Wilber, and SJ's newborn pictures."
"That was a long time ago." Tina breathed with a slight nod.
"Yeah, but we all look better now." Evan stated. Tina let a smile slip as she rolled her eyes. He always knew how to make her smile. "Well, the kids have hair now. You can tell what their gender is now by photo."
Tina slapped his arm. "Harry just had really long lashes. He was a very handsome baby."
Evan chuckled. "Yes, he was. You look better now. You know I loved your baby curves. I just got wrinkles."
"You look more dashing. You almost look wise." Tina said running her hand through his hair. "Plus, you look better without all that pig grease in your hair."
"It was always easier for you to hang onto me without all that gunk in here." Evan smirked pulling at the ends of his hair. Tina shook her head in disbelief. She forgot how easily he could turn any conversation to one that revolved around their sex life. "Are you tired?"
Tina smiled softly at him. "Yeah, I am. But, I don't have any other clothes."
Evan squeezed her hands gently. "I have a bag for you out in the car. I'll go get it. The bedroom is upstairs at the end of the hallway." With that, he stood up, kissed her head, and walked out of the room. Tina heard the screen door slam shut just purely from the age of it. It made her smile. This was just what she wanted: a modern farmhouse with all the characteristics of something older. Running a hand through her hair, she stood up and made her way upstairs. He wasn't kidding when he said he hung up pictures around the house. There were pictures of her and Evan, Harry and Wilber playing, hospital pictures from each of the births, including SJ's. Her hand came to rest on the last doorknob, passing three other doors that she told herself to look behind later.
When she opened the door and flicked on the light, the room seemed like a sanctuary. The two bedside lamps were dimly lit, showing off the dark wood floors and cream colored walls. The bed had a matching bedspread that faced the large bay window. She could've laid down on it without bending her knees. A dresser sat in the corner to the right of the door, a TV sitting on top of it. Another longer dresser was on the other side of the bed. Pictures seemed to be piled on it, and, like Evan said, there were pictures she didn't even remember taking that made her blush. She was just glad they were both covered in them. Her eyes drifted to the door across from the bedroom doorway. Slowly opening it, she found a fairly large master bathroom.
Her attention was caught when she heard Evan clear his throat. She turned to find him standing in the bedroom doorway with two suitcases in his hands. "Do you like the place?" He asked her.
"Yes, it's beautiful. I wouldn't have made this any other way." Tina said. She watched him put the suitcases on the bed and open one of them. He dug through it for a second before handing her a t-shirt and a pair of pajama pants. "How did you-"
"I called your assistant. That was the easiest part of this whole thing." Evan stated before zipping her suitcase back up. He put both of them on the floor by the window. "We can unpack them tomorrow. I'm beat."
Tina's heart started racing. She hadn't realized they'd be sleeping in the same bed. It should've occurred to her, but it didn't. Even when they had their affair, they only shared a bed for sex. They never spent the night with one another just to sleep. She was more prepared for him to take her than to sleep next to her. She had been expecting the prior since he first showed up. It just happened with him. "I'm going to change." She said before locking herself in the bathroom. Her breathing was starting to get out of control, and she knew she had to fix it before she passed out. Her hands clung to the counter top with white knuckles and sweaty palms. No matter how much she wanted to stay in there and just breathe, she needed to get out there before Evan came to check on her.
Emerging from the bathroom, she wasn't as surprised as she probably should have been when she saw Evan standing shirtless in a pair of sweat pants flipping through channels on the TV. "There's nothing on." He grumbled to himself as he continued to look through the channels.
"You know that if you find something you won't fall asleep until it's over." Tina stated before taking the remote from him and setting it down, turning off the TV in the process. "You've been driving for hours. Get some sleep."
"Alright," Evan smiled, a small blush momentarily reaching his cheeks, "which side of the bed do you want?"
Tina bit the inside of her cheek, avoiding going after her already short nails. "I'll take this side." She said before climbing onto the side closest to the bedroom door.
"Good, I might need the bathroom during the night. That's another thing I don't like about getting older. My bladder seems to be getting smaller." Evan stated as he climbed in on the other side. Tina let out a chuckle. Whether from nerves or the fact that he was telling a joke, she didn't know. He laid down and groaned relaxing into the mattress. "It feels good to lay down." He clapped his hands twice before the lights went out.
Tina could see him clearly with the moon shining in on them. Her heart was still racing, and she knew it would be a shitty night for any kind of sleep whatsoever. And, in that moment, it was like he could read her mind. His body turned to hers, bringing her closer to him with a hand firmly on her hip. "Don't worry. Just relax. I won't do anything until you're ready, baby. I promise you; this will be different. I'm not going to force you to do anything. I already lost you once. I won't do it again." He told her. "You're heart is racing."
"I know." Tina whispered.
"Just think about where you want to go most in this world and picture it. Imagine the noises, the sights, the smells. Let yourself go." Evan said to her, rubbing her arm gently. Tina closed her eyes and started picturing the place she had always dreamed about going to. "What are you picturing?"
Tina smiled softly, her eyes still closed. "Rome."
Evan grinned. "It's beautiful there. You would really love it."
"Where's your place?" Tina asked feeling her eyes get heavy.
"I'm there right now." Evan breathed. Tina opened her eyes to find him staring at her, the moon reflecting in his eyes. She closed them again when he leaned forward and kissed her head. "Go to sleep, baby. Just picture Rome."
