Guys.
Ohmygod.
There was something like seventy reviews for the last chapter. You guys are absolutely incredible!
Many of you (like 99.9%) guessed correctly. I know that this is an extremely touchy subject with a lot of people, and that everyone has their own opinions about how the aftermath of something like this takes place. This is based on my own experience, from when I was very young and stupid and not being smart about things.
I apologize for any mistakes made in my grammar.
There was a faint beeping happening and Clary blinked a couple of times, looking around, the room slowly coming into focus, the edges smoothing out a little. Her mouth felt dry and she tried to wet her lips with her tongue, but it felt heavy in her mouth. She braced her hands on either side of her and tried to shuffle herself upwards, but her body just didn't feel right. Suddenly someone was rushing toward her and she smelt the perfume that her mother always wore.
"Clary, baby, lay back," Jocelyn urged softly. "I'll just go and get the nurse."
"Nurse?" Clary croaked out, tilting her head backwards as she tried to look around the room. Everywhere was white—a horrible, almost blinding white—and then Luke came into view.
"Hey, girl," he said to her softly and she tried a smile. Next to him was Simon, who was chewing down on his lower lip, his expression fixed in it's perpetually worried state.
"What happened?" Clary attempted to ask, but her voice barely came out louder than a whisper. Jocelyn reappeared, a nurse behind her. The nurse was older that her mum, with blonde curly hair tied in a bun at the nape of her neck and a wide smile on her face. She bustled over to Clary, checking the monitors above her and then reaching down to fluff up the pillows behind Clary's head.
"How are we doing, sweetheart?" She asked, straightening up but still peering down at her.
"Thirsty," Clary murmured and the nurse nodded, reaching over to a tray which was next to the head of the bed and picked up a cup with a lid and a straw poking out. She held it up to Clary's mouth and she lifted her hands to hold the cup, surprised by how heavy her arms felt and weak her grip was. She drank almost the whole cup before giving it back to the nurse and then putting it back down on the tray.
"I'm just going to get the doctor," the nurse said. "We'll be back in a couple of minutes."
"What happened?" Clary asked, her voice not quite as scratchy and her throat feeling a lot better now as she talked. "The last thing I remember...I was coming to your place," she looked over at Simon.
"Yeah, the cab driver got to my place and you had passed out in the backseat, so he knocked on the door all freaked out and shit and then drove us to the hospital. I called your mum on the way and her and Luke met us here," Simon said, standing closer to the side of the bed now and reaching out to squeeze her hand. Jocelyn and Luke were exchanging looks behind him and Clary looked past her friend to look at them.
"What are you not telling me?" She asked, her stomach in knots as she wondered what it was that had caused her to black out. She tried to remember more details about the night before and she shook her head. "I remember there being a lot of blood..."
"They haven't given us any details because you're not a minor anymore, and apparently whatever it was that happened wasn't life threatening, so they didn't appoint any of the powers of an attorney to your emergency contact," Jocelyn told her. She joined Simon next to the bed and gently ran her fingers through Clary's hair and over her forehead. "But it's okay, baby. Whatever it is, we're going to help you through it." Clary nodded and rested her head against the pillow for a minute, before her eyes flew open again.
"I need to call Jace," she said, worried. "He'll freak out when he see's that I didn't come home last night—"
"Ms Fray?" The doctor queried as he came into the room, the nurse following closely behind him. "I'm Doctor Miller. How are you feeling?"
"Um," Clary swallowed hard and looked around the room; at her family and her best friend and at the monitors and at the IV that was hooked up to her arm. "Confused, I guess."
"Okay, now I do need to begin with the fact that you are over eighteen now, and are viewed as an adult. The information that I give to you is directly for you and if you want to speak in private, then we can have this room cleared," he continued. Clary frowned as she looked across to where Simon, Luke and Jocelyn were standing.
"No, it's okay," she said. "I want them to stay." The doctor glanced sideways at the nurse, who gave a one shouldered shrug and then looked back at Clary.
"Alright," Doctor Miller nodded and looked down at his chart. "Did you know that you were pregnant?"
That was where everything began to blur again. It wasn't like last night, where her stomach was aching and she felt weak all over, it was different. The doctor continued, and Clary couldn't really take anything in, only hearing words every now and again that just made this unreal situation even worse.
"You lost a lot of blood...It sometimes happens...Miscarried...I'm sorry, Ms Fray," the doctor finished and all Clary could do is nod dumbly at him. Jocelyn stared in shock at the doctor, and then at her daughter, who's face was now as pale as a sheet as she stared down at her hands, which were folded over her lap. Jocelyn licked her lips and then moved forward, not caring that she was pushing in front of the doctor and leaning over her daughters hospital bed, gathering her into her arms.
"It's okay, baby," she murmured, kissing her daughter on the head. "We don't need to figure this out right now."
"Did you still want us to call Jace, love?" Luke asked, looking shocked and unsure behind the doctor and nurse. Clary shook her head furiously, still hidden by Jocelyn's figure as tears dripped down from her eyes.
"No," she said, her voice strained. "No, not yet."
Jocelyn and Luke left around one in the afternoon to go and get lunch and get some spare clothes for her. Simon stayed with Clary, sitting in the uncomfortable plastic chair next to the head of her bed and looking up at her a little nervously. Clary had calmed down a bit, although she was still pale, and Simon reached out to touch her hand again. She was cold as ice, but she returned the pressure, wrapping her fingers around his.
"Did you know you were pregnant?" He asked quietly. Clary paused and then shook her head.
"No," she murmured. "I've been feeling pretty sick, on and off, for the past couple of weeks but I didn't think I was...P-pregnant." She was barely able to get the word out, and swallowed hard, chewing down on her lower lip. "Thanks for calling my mum."
"I tried calling Jace as well last night, but he wasn't answering his phone," Simon told her.
"Yeah, we went out last night," Clary said, breathing out through her nose. "I want him to know that I'm okay, but I just can't talk to him right now." Simon nodded and then blinked, looking like he had an idea.
"I can text Izzy," he suggested. Clary raised an eyebrow.
"Why do you have Izzy's number?" She asked. Simon's lips opened and closed a couple of times and then he shrugged.
"I think we should just focus on you right now," he said, looking down at his phone for a few seconds, his fingers moving quickly across the screen before looking back at her. Clary decided not to push it, but made a mental note to come back to that later. "I can bring a charger in for your phone tonight, I've got a spare one at home." Clary glanced at the tray next to her, where her dead phone and the cup of water were sitting. Simons phone started vibrating violently and he looked down, pursing his lips. "It's Izzy," he told her.
"Answer it," she said with a shrug. "But I don't feel like talking to anyone right now."
"I'll just let her know that you're okay, and she can pass that on—you know, to Jace," Simon assured her, standing up and walking out of the room to take the call. Clary laid back in the bed, now that Simon was gone, her mind returning to the reason why she was back in hospital.
Pregnant.
With Jace's baby.
The whole thing was crazy.
Jocelyn had been young when she had fallen pregnant with Clary, and while she was a pretty happy-go-lucky mum, and okay with a lot of things that normal mums weren't, getting pregnant before being in a steady relationship when she was a good age was something that she had always frowned on. Clary hadn't ever met her dad, he had taken off before she was born, and that made her wonder how things would have gone if she hadn't miscarried, and if her and Jace became parents.
Would he stay with her?
Would he support her?
Or would be leave, like her own father had?
Tears flooded to her eyes and blocked out her vision as Simon came back into the room, ending his conversation with Isabelle.
"So, Izzy is going to talk to Jace—whoah, Clary," Simon blinked as he saw tears streaming down her face and trickling down her neck. "Hey, hey," he rushed to her side, wrapping his arms around her and holding her against him. It wasn't like hugging Jace, but it was Simon, her best friend, and it was comforting. "We're going to get through this, okay? Me, you, Joc, Luke and Jace. We've all got your back, okay?"
"I don't like this, Simon," she sobbed into his hoodie, feeling her tears slowly beginning to soak through the material. "This would never have happened if I wasn't acting so stupid—I'm not like this, Simon!" She cried out, pulling away from him and rubbing her hands over her face.
"Clary..." he murmured, pushing her hair out of her face and swiping away at the tears on her cheeks.
"This would have happened if I wasn't being an idiot, drinking and smoking, and fucking sleeping around," Clary continued, her voice wobbly.
"You weren't...You weren't sleeping around," Simon sounded uncomfortable. "You were only sleeping with Jace."
"But I wasn't making sure we were always using protection. I'm on the pill, but sometimes we would sleep together when we were drunk and I know that we didn't always use a condom," she swallowed hard. "I just...I can't believe that this happened to me." Simon tried a weak smile.
"I think that maybe you should stop thinking like this right now," he said softly. "You're going to have lots of time to think about it later. You just need to focus on getting better right now, getting stronger."
"I think I need a change," Clary murmured, her voice almost inaudible now. "I can't let something like this happen again. I need a change..."
