Chapter 21
Dom's POV
~next day~
I woke up in the plush bed of the hotel room. Elena and I had decided to stay here for the night so we could easily flight out today. We had the last few items put into storage and our suitcases with us in the hotel. I had arranged to meet with the new renters last night instead of this morning and I had given them the keys to the place. My mind flashed back to yesterday afternoon of Letty letting go of my hand and walking away. She still held my emotions somehow even after I had let her out of my heart. I looked over to Elena her blonde hair was flowing across the pillow. I grabbed my phone off of the night table next to me. It was 9:47 and we had to be at the airport at 12:30 to fly out at 2:30. On the home screen there was a text from Mia.
Morning Dom, Jack and I are spending time together this morning we'll meet you at our gate as soon as we can.
I clicked away at the keyboard and sent Mia a message back,
Okay Mia, see you then.
I dropped my phone back down on the table next to me and looked up to the ceiling. Images of Letty and I filled my mind. I tried to push them out but they stayed there. My scene filled my head and it was a something I could never forget.
Letty and I had been in one of our fights as usual. This time it was over Letty's grad. She didn't want to attend the ceremony but I did. She was 18 and defiant. I had just pulled up in my car and Letty's car was parked outside. I had gotten tired of our fights and Letty, who had recently moved in to our place, was threatening to move out again. We fought but we were or thought we were in love. I wanted to be with Letty forever and for our fights to end and being young and naïve I thought I had the perfect solution. I grabbed something off of the seat next to me and shoved it into my coat pocket. I got out of my car and headed towards the door. I walked through the door to and saw Letty sitting on the couch reading a car magazine. I walked over to her and said,
"Letty I need to talk to you about something,"
Her voice was cold when she said,
"Have you finally come to your senses?"
"No there is something else I need to ask you,"
I dropped to my knee and pulled a little black box out of my pocket. Letty gasped and sat up straight on the couch.
"Letty, will you marry me?"
I opened the box and the ring came into view. It was a skinny silver band with a tiny diamond attached to the top. Letty looked at me and then to my complete shock she said,
"No,"
My face dropped and Letty noticed. She dropped down to the floor with me inches away. She put her hands on my cheeks and said,
"Dom, I love you and that's not why I said no. I'm 18 years old and my life is just beginning. Let's wait awhile ok? In a few years I'd love to marry you but right now it's just not the right time,"
She kissed me gently on the lips and I looked into her eyes and nodded my head. I took the ring out of the box and handed it to Letty.
"Keep it, it's made specifically for you,"
She looked confused and took the ring. She looked at it closely and on the inside of the band and she saw four engraved letters: LO + DT. It was our initials. Letty looked into my eyes and kissed me again.
For many years after that day Letty wore the ring on a chain around her neck but she kept it hidden under her shirt. I felt a hand land on my chest and slowly travel down my body. I sat up and swung my feet over the edge of the bed. Elena's arms wrapped around my bare body.
"What's wrong Dom?" Elena asked
"Nothing," I said
Elena wrapped the sheet around her body and sat beside me. She stared at me waiting for a reply. Finally I lied saying,
"I'm just thinking about the move, that's all,"
She kissed me on the cheek.
"Don't worry," she said, "I'm gonna go get ready and then why don't we grab a bite to eat before we head out to the airport."
I nodded my head and she stepped off of the bed taking the sheet with her, draped across her body like a dress to cover her body. I watched her walk away. She was my wife now, I had to look out for her now and for Mia too.
Elena's POV
There was something that was on Dom's mind other than moving and I knew it. I held the sheet close to my body and I walked over to where our luggage was sitting. I grabbed some clothes and toiletries out of my luggage and looked back at Dom. He was staring into space. I reached into my purse and pulled out an envelope it was from Letty. She had left it on the table with all the cards the wedding guests had left us. It was addressed to Dom and singularly to him. I had taken it and in less than twenty four hours we would be thousands of miles away from Letty and Dom wouldn't have anything to worry about.
Letty's POV
I stretched out on my bed. Today was Sunday and I was looking forward to relaxing after a long restless night. My eyes were sore and tight from crying and there were a few tear stains on my pillow case. I rolled out of my bed and walked to the fridge. I opened it bending over to check the contents. There was a few beers, a jar of peanut butter and a jar of mayonnaise. I hadn't been able to go grocery shopping very much since I had moved in. I grabbed a beer, the peanut butter and a spoon. I wandered back to my room with my findings and crawled onto my bed. I cracked open my beer and took a sip of the cool goodness. I took the spoon and dug in to the peanut butter. I grabbed my phone from beside me and scrolled through my Facebook alternating from licking my peanut butter to sipping my beer. My phone rang and I jolted. I hit answer not checking to see who was calling.
"Hello?" I asked
"Letty?" The voice answered. I could recognize the voice anywhere, it was Dom. His voice was duller than usual.
"Dom is that you?"
The breathing on the other end hitched.
"Dom talk to me, Dom?"
I was cut off. He had hung up. I pulled my phone away from my ear and I quickly redialled. I knew the number by heart. The phone rang over and over again but it went to voicemail. I brought the phone down from my ear and I dropped it on my lap. Little did I know that that would be the last time I would hear Dom's voice for the next four years.
