Chapter 21: Winner at Heart
Chapter Summary: Even though it was one-sided, he would do anything to win her heart. He would do anything to have her at all cost. He was after all a guy who was in love with her… like he did.
'I want, you feed
Pick up your speed
There can't be saving if it's already been won
I play for keeps but you don't listen
Remember me? I'm what you're missing
Missing out on (Missing out on)
Stuck in this competition
Play me in everything
Make me a rival
But you still don't see that you're
sore winner, a sore winner
Losing is not your thing
You can't hold the title
But you still don't see that you're
Sore winner, a sore winner…'
'You keep tearing me down, looks like I met my match today.'
~ There for Tomorrow – Sore Winner ~
They looked at each other after the heated kiss that they shared. She didn't have the idea how red she was at that very moment and her heart wasn't going to calm down any minute. Standing in front and trapping her on the wall of that cruise ship was the person that she admired for a long time, the person that she looked up to and the person that she loved.
And those affections had been returned by the same person that she didn't expect.
Yes, Ryoma was in love with her and was now intensely looking straight to her eyes. Holding him to his shoulder, she looked down not taking the stare anymore as she bit her lower lip. Her emotions were beating up on her.
"Don't do that."
Hearing his voice, she looked up to him and gave him a curious expression.
"It'll make me want to kiss you more." He smirked as he touched her lips with his fingers and teased them.
"M-mou…" She closed her eyes as she trembled with his simple gestures. She was blushing really hard at that moment so she didn't dare to look up especially when the younger's hand travelled down to her collarbone. Gripping the hold to his shoulder, she tried not to buckle her knees down for the contact was too much for her.
Ryoma was never this intimate to her before.
"You're not wearing it."
She had the urge to look up to him once again when he spoke. He was still touching her collarbone and thought that he was searching something from there. Then her eyes widened when she understood what he was talking about.
It was the necklace that he gave to her on her last birthday.
Yeah, she was not wearing it because she had removed it before the wedding started a while ago. She could see at least she imagined that she saw the slight sadness in his eyes. He was rather upset as she thought. She stared at him for a while before she finally spoke her thoughts;
"I… I am not wearing it."
"I can see that." He frowned at her holding her to her shoulder at that moment.
She smiled at him when she saw his reaction, "I am not wearing it but," she cut her words as she looked down to her sides and yanked something from her ruined wedding dress' pocket and showed it to him. His eyes widened when he saw what it was. She closed her eyes and gave her a genuine smile; blush was still present to her face;
"It's always been with me."
"…"
"It… never left my side because…" She fondly looked at the necklace that was in her palm and continued, "Ryoma-kun gave it to me."
He stared at her and to the necklace alternatively before he gave her a tiny smile. He reached for the necklace and volunteered to put it on her.
…Without words, without permission, and without hesitation.
From the hotel, they transferred to Blooming RecreationCenter for their awaited match. With the help of Atobe's mode of transportation, they were able to escape the media below. Everyone fitted in with different tactics including the Queen who was interested at watching the game. She was a little disappointed at the outcome of the wedding but she could understand the situation. The only thing that bothered her was why they did wait for the wedding day before they could make any necessary actions.
Being an understandable Queen of England, she could understand them. She was concerned about her people's thoughts and feelings and she wouldn't hold a grudge at them.
No wonder that they had her as a role model to different countries because of their current queen, because of her.
After a few minutes of air travelling, they were able to reach the Blooming Recreation Center. They went straight to the court and both of them were being presented with rackets.
"If I win this match, you leave her alone." Chris said glaring at him.
"You should say that to yourself," Ryoma glared back at him, "Because I'll win in the end."
"I am not going to lose to you." Chris said.
"Try your luck then." He dared.
Atobe walked in front and volunteered as the referee for their match. They decided who would play first by tossing a coin. Chris would serve first after that. They went back to their baselines as they prepared themselves for the game.
"One Set Match, Kishida to Serve!" Atobe announced.
Chris started to dribble the ball for several times before he tossed it upward and hit with full force. Ryoma ran to it and hit it back without hassle.
"Love-fifteen!" Atobe announced.
"A return ace." Eiji said as they witnessed the beginning of the game.
Sakuno was silently watching the game. She was worried at first especially they started provoking one another. Sumire tapped her and gave her an assuring look. She bit her lower lip as she nuzzled her face to her grandmother's neck.
"Obaa-chan…"
"You have to support the both of them," Sumire whispered to her ear hugging her back, "They are doing it for you."
"I… I don't want this at all," She said gripping Sumire's shirt real tight, "I don't want to be the reason why they are having this match now."
Tezuka and Oishi were looking at them, as well as Tomoka. They wanted to comfort her at that very moment but they knew that it was not the right time to do that.
"I am not worth it," She said trying to hold the tears back to her eyes, "Tennis is for fun… not for dare…"
"Sakuno…"
"This isn't tennis at all."
Tomoka who heard her couldn't take it anymore that she walked closer to her and tapped her shoulder. Sakuno leaned away from her grandmother and looked at her.
"I really want to slap you, don't you know that?" Tomoka said giving her a firm look at that very moment.
Sakuno was pretty shocked when she said that. She didn't say anything to her so Tomoka continued talking;
"First, you left without telling us. Second, you told us that you have a fiancé—no—he told us that you're his fiancée. Third, you suddenly announced to everyone that you were getting married without telling us first!" Tomoka almost shouted that to her, "I am your best friend but you hid everything to me! What would you expect? That you're not worth at this? Why would Ryoma-sama do this kind of things then? Why do you think they are having a match at this very court right now!?" She said as she pointed the court where they were playing.
"T-Tomoka-chan…"
"Those guys that are playing at that moment love you," She said shouting at her now, "Those guys that you think that are not worth playing that kind of tennis are trying to win against each other because of you. So don't think that you don't deserve this play style."
"…"
"This is their way of tennis," Tomoka looked down as she felt Horio's hands to her shoulder, "They are showing their affections towards you by playing against each other."
"Tomoka…" Horio whispered to her ear as he gripped the shoulder of his girlfriend, "That's enough…"
"Realize that, baka…" She slowly yet firmly said before she turned around and faced Horio wiping the tears that fell the moment she turned around to her boyfriend, "Don't go against me. I am really upset."
"You're stupid yourself." Horio said hugging his girlfriend in the process. Tomoka just let him as he pleased. She was not in the mood to bicker with her boyfriend.
"Game, One game to love, Echizen Ryoma!" Atobe announced after that small conversation. Everyone returned to the game including the still worried Sakuno.
It was Ryoma's turned to serve this time. His attention was on the ball as he dribbled it for several times. He looked in front and glared at the blonde boy who was seriously waiting for him to hit it. He gripped the ball hard first before he tossed it and hit it with his right handed serve.
"Detaa!" Katsuo and Kachiro said at the same time.
The ball spun on the ground and created a tight friction before it bounced near the blonde's face. Chris who anticipated the ball was able to cover it with his racket.
"Ryoma-kun's Twist serve!" The duo said once again as the ball went through making Chris to sit back thus, earning Ryoma a point.
"Fifteen-love!" Atobe announced.
"It's service ace this time." Momo said as he was watching the game with the others.
Ryoma yanked another ball from his pocket and dribbled it on the ground. After several times of dribbling, he tossed it up and gave the blonde guy another twist serve. Chris tried to block it just like the first one but he only dropped his racket because of the force.
"Thirty-love!"
Ryoma-kun, Chris-kun… She silently called their names as she clasped her hands to her chest. Ryoma was in for another twist serve at that moment.
"Forty-love!"
"This game is one-sided," Fuji suddenly said catching everyone's attention, "We all know that Echizen is the current number one tennis player in the world and still earning for the golden slam title."
"This game will be finished shortly than we expected," Oshitari said not tearing his gaze to the court, "No one can stop him when he's on the court."
"Two games to love, Echizen!" Atobe announced.
"Shikuso!" Chris cursed as he gripped his racket really hard.
"Kishida-san doesn't have a chance." Shiraishi said this time.
"Ne Shiraishi," Kintarou said tugging his Captain's sleeve, "If he doesn't stand a chance against Koshimae, why is he still playing him?"
Kintarou's voice was a little loud so no wonder that Chris heard him. Before the boy with a leopard shirt could say more words, Momo and Eiji covered his mouth with their hands and sweat dropped as they looked at the ranging blondie.
xxx
Chris ignored them as he stared at the ball. There's no way I lose on this! Not that they are watching! Not that Sakuno is watching. He gripped the ball hard as thought that. Our parents are watching. I don't want to disappoint them. With that, he started to dribble the ball and analyzed what happened so far. He looked ahead as he observed Ryoma's position.
I knew I could make a good serve. I've seen him do it for several times. Chris gave another thought before he tossed the ball and successful hit it.
Pok!
His eyes widened when the ball went past through near his face.
"Love-fifteen!"
He looked at him giving the serious expression. His rival was visibly serious with the game. The tennis prodigy was not really going to be easy on him. Even he was no prodigy at all. He was at the disadvantage but he was able to smirk.
"I'll show you that I am not that stupid in this game." He whispered as he dribbled the ball once again. Ryoma hit it hard but he anticipated it this time so he was able to aim it back.
Ryoma was a little surprised but he didn't let him get a point. Although he let him have some sort of rallying.
"Thirty-love!"
Chris sighed to calm himself down. Ryoma was indeed a prodigy but he knew that he could get at least one point from him. He wanted to prove that he wasn't useless in the game. He took a good aim at the ball as he hit it to the net.
Ryoma hit it back with the same force but Chris was able to hit it back.
I knew I could get use to his hit. Chris thought as he hit several hits from him. He ran to and fro just to hit his returned shots.
"Something's odd." Inui said as he scribbling some notes in his notebook.
"You are right," Eiji agreed and voiced what he was thinking, "Ochibi is taking the game for granted."
"What do you mean?" Ann asked him.
"He's taking the rally too long." Eiji said.
"Or rather…" Tezuka suddenly talked catching everyone's attention this time.
"Echizen's playing with him." Shiraishi finished it for him.
"He is?" Kachiro asked not taking the confusion anymore, "How come?"
"Echizen keeps at running without getting a single sweat but," Fuji explained as he looked at them, "Kishida-san is already tired catching up with the ball that he hits."
Everyone agreed in silence as they observed the game.
"Both endurance and stamina are different between them," Inui noted as he explained the progress, "With the status between them, it is clarified who will win this game in no time."
Both parents were watching the game as well as they listened to Seigaku's data analyst. Reinja and Reina looked at Jones and Mary and gave each other an understanding look.
To be honest, they could stop the game any time. They had the power. They could force the girl to marry Chris if they wanted to. They could order the two of them to continue their wedding.
Especially Reinja, Lord Kitazawa.
…The second richest person in Japan.
…Respected by the others.
One word from him meant everybody's lives in the mansion. No one could disobey him. What he wanted would always go with the flow. The way he wanted. If he wanted Sakuno to be with Chris, he would just say the magic word and everything would go that way.
But he couldn't.
He just couldn't.
He was supposed to stop this 'nonsense' between them but if he did that, they would just do more unexpected things. And that what Reinja was trying to avoid.
"Forty-love!"
Chris was catching for his breath as he stood up straight and faced him, "Play seriously!"
Ryoma stood up as well without a sweat, "I am seriously playing you."
"You don't seem like it," Chris said as he glared at him, "I hate people who do things half-heartedly."
Ryoma glared back at him but he didn't say anything.
"I already win against that attitude of yours." He stoically said.
He bent a little lower as he gripped the racket with his both hands, "Just serve for the last time already."
Chris didn't say anything as he stayed for a few seconds before he decided to serve. But because he provoked the tennis prodigy, he wasn't able to hit it back.
"Game! Three games to love! Echizen!" Atobe shouted.
Ryoma stared right through Chris' eyes and replied, "I never played half-heartedly," He stoically said before he surprised Sakuno by looking at her, "Not that she's cheering for me."
Sakuno's eyes widened despite the tears that fell that she didn't know when. She bit her lower lip. She wanted to stop the game but she knew that it would be stupid if she did that. Besides, Chris was also serious when he dared the tennis prodigy. Despite that he knew that he would never win against him. Tomoka was right after all. All she had to do was to cheer for them.
…For Both Ryoma and Chris.
"Hidoi na, Echizen!" Eiji suddenly blurted his thoughts, not missing to hold his fiancé's hand in the process, "We are cheering for you too!"
"That's right!" Momo agreed grabbing Sakuno which was not far from him, "Don't keep Ryuzaki-chan to yourself!"
"Hey!" Both Ryoma and Chris reacted. They paused for a while before they spoke at the same time once again, "Keep your hands off of her!"
Sakuno blushed as she wiped her tears and then gave them a weak smile, "M-mou…"
"So young, so young." Momo grinned at them but he never let go of the girl. He looked behind him when he felt someone tap his shoulder.
"I guess you better let go of her before you experience their wrath." Reinja seriously said to him.
Momo sweat dropped as he slowly put his arm down from her. He was not actually worried Ryoma and Chris' wrath.
It was about the lord.
The way Reinja said his words had signs of warning that he must do what he had ordered him to do. He walked a few steps backward and stood beside Gakuto and Chitose who had just arrived from the last travelling service.
"G-good luck…" Sakuno suddenly said catching everyone's attention, "Futari dono…"
Ryoma and Chris were shocked at her words. They never said anything but they stared at the girl. Sakuno was clasping her hands to her chest as she looked at the both them giving her the best smile;
"G-give all your best shot!"
They were a bit shocked when she said that. Ryoma pinned his hat down and went back to the baseline. Chris also did the same thing.
Both of them were refreshed from the game, like they had started playing from the scratch.
Back at the game:
Another set was about to start after the little interruption. Ryoma was going to serve this time. He knew that Chris had no experienced with tennis and he had proven it when they had a match way back in Burj Al Arab in Dubai.
But he could play as an amateur type. For a noble like him it was pretty amazing that he could play. But never even in his second life would tell him that.
…Over his dead body.
Being the cocky, stoic and stubborn he was, he would not give any mercy for every opponent that he would face. He could play fun but not a hole for a chance, even if it was a certain pigtailed-girl who was slowly improving with her own tennis.
Thinking of the girl once again, he peeked at her from the corner of his eyes. She was looking at his direction and probably worried about him. He knew that he made it clear to her. No matter what happened, she would always end up with him.
And that had been decided a long time ago and no one could stop and block their way. Not even the game at that very moment.
Later on:
"Six games to love! Game, set, match! Echizen Ryoma!" Atobe had proudly announced the winner after twenty minutes of one –sided match.
Sakuno was able to breath easily after that. Her heart was beating fast as she looked at the tennis prodigy returned from his service ace position.
Everyone shouted and rejoiced at their kouhai's victory while Chris was unreadable at that moment. The others remained stationary but their expressions were visible to those who had cat-like eyes.
"One more set!"
Everyone's attention was caught by the blonde guy's sudden words. Chris looked at him and glared.
"One more set!" He repeated as he pointed his racket at him.
"C-Chris-kun…" Sakuno was surprised at Chris' dare. He wanted another set from Ryoma.
Ryoma stayed silent as he stared at him. Everyone murmured and miraculously, both parents were not stopping the commotion at that very moment. After a few minutes of staring at each other, Ryoma tossed a ball from him which Chris firmly caught. As he caught that, he positioned himself as the receiver.
Chris got his message and began dribbling the ball… for another game of the second set.
Later on:
"Another set!"
"What!" Everyone couldn't believe what the blonde guy was saying. He was shaking after another series of minutes of Ryoma's unforgivable hits. But just as Ryoma, Chris was also stubborn.
"I am not done yet!" Chris stoically said as he faced him, "Another one!"
"Heh." He pinned his hat down as tossed a ball once again. He wouldn't mind him to start another set. In fact, he was giving him the favor of 'warming' his skills up.
Fifteen minutes had passed:
"One last set!"
"O-oi!" Ryoma stuttered as he saw Chris went to his knees. His breath was heavy. His looks were haggard but he paid no mind of it.
"I am not giving up." The blonde guy stubbornly said.
The others looked at the both of them. Sakuno was worried for them. They had been playing for almost an hour and from the look of it, they all knew that Chris was at the total disadvantage… from the start. Ryoma ended the game since the first set but his opponent refused to admit defeat. He wanted to go on.
"It's over." Ryoma monotonously said.
"Yadda!" He shouted as he swung his racket sideways, "There's no way I'd have beaten by you!"
"You cannot hit a normal shot."
"Don't judge me like I am some weakling, you idiot!"
"Stop it, Chris!"
Everyone, including the people who were at the court looked at the person talked last.
"Accept your defeat."
"I can't!" Chris said as he forced himself to stand, "I can't lose this game! I don't want to lose Sakuno!"
Sakuno was shocked when he said that… even Ryoma had the same reaction. She bit her lower lip to hold her tears. Everyone was intensely looking at the blonde guy.
Chris was really serious about her.
"There's no way that I'd lose. I can't afford to lose her," Chris frowned as he looked at them, "Not ever, dad!"
"Don't be stupid!" Jones shouted back at him making everyone shock at his words, "Don't force yourself to the girl who visibly doesn't love you. Learn that fact already!"
"But…"
"Do you think that Sakuno will be happy with this get up?"
"…"
"Even if you win this game, she will still love this guy that you are competing with!" Jones explained to him, "Don't force her to the things that she doesn't like. If you love her, do these things for her."
Chris bit his lower lip as he gripped his hand that had a racket on. Was it all over? He did everything for the girl to love him. Why was it not enough? It was really unfair. He was just loving her… just like he did.
"C-Chris-kun…"
He looked at the person that he truly cared all this time. Sakuno walked closer to him, giving him the pain look to her face. She was hurt too as he could see it from her eyes.
"I… I am really sorry. I tried but… I simply can't," Sakuno said staring straight to his eyes, "I am happy that you feel for me that way but I could only love you as a friend."
"Sakuno…"
"I—If you think that I am really bad," She bit her lower lip as she intensely looked at him, "Please slap me. I was being cruel to you."
Everyone was shocked at her words. Ryoma and Chris were no different from them.
"If that would satisfy you," She said confidently closing her eyes in the process, "Please slap me as much as you want."
Silence erupted the whole tennis area. Everyone waited for the blondie's next action. But Ryoma wasn't. He wanted to stop what she wanted to ask of him. And he wanted to do it now.
For the blonde guy was doing something but her request.
Chris slowly hugged the girl making the latter flinch. The rest was also shocked as well. He tightened the hug like there was no tomorrow.
"I can't do that," Chris said as he whispered to her ear, "Not anymore."
"Chris-kun…"
"Hitting you would only mean to send you away further from me," He continued as he nuzzled his cheek to her neck, "And it is too hard for me right now."
She was standing on her toes at that very moment. She knew it well as he was trembling at that moment. She tapped the blonde guy's back to comfort him.
Chris was crying at that moment.
Ryoma saw his tears for he was looking at his way. He looked away as he pinned his hat down. The others were also giving them some sort of respect. Jones and Mary were silently looking at them. Reinja was comforting his already weeping wife. Everything was solemn at that moment. The queen was even speechless. No one knew what she was thinking at that moment. But they knew one thing.
He didn't win the game against Ryoma but Chris was a totally winner at heart.
It was a little quiet as they respected their little moment. Only Ryoma who was about to set them apart if the blonde guy didn't speak first;
"This is rather stupid," Chris leaned away. His expression was still unreadable, "I still am seeing you."
"E-h!"
Chris gave her a surprised kiss on the forehead. Everyone was shocked as well. Sakuno couldn't help but blush.
"That's what that brat's going to say." Chris looked at her and smirked this time.
Sakuno was shocked at his words. Chris was telling her something and somehow she knew what he meant by that. In the end, she gave him a weak smile.
Their little moment was interrupted with a sudden gust of wind courtesy of a tennis ball that passed near Chris' head. They looked at the culprit who was just standing at the other side of the court.
"Ne, One last set you say?" He said pointing his racket at him, "Get on with it."
"Ryoma-kun!" Sakuno retorted.
"Enough is enough!" The queen said making everyone look at her, "This situation is over. We all know the result of the game."
"…"
"But I enjoyed it."
"Eh?!"
"Chris dear, I am proud of you," The queen said walking towards him, "You want her to be happy with the person that she loves. I know that you are hurt but you are strong."
"Auntie…"
The queen slapped him on the back, "You want a slap, I'll give you a slap!"
Everyone sweat dropped at the queen's words. They thought that the queen misunderstood that part. It was actually Sakuno who wished for it but she gave it to his niece… only to his back.
"And as for you young lady," Reinja said catching her attention, "You're grounded for a month."
"E-eh?"
"You will not see nor call anyone but Capella and you will stay inside your room only for a month." Reinja authoritatively said before he looked at Ryoma, "I guess that you understood what that order mean."
Ryoma's eyes widened as he looked at the lord. He pinned his hat down once again, "Che…"
"B-but… D-dad?"
"Do I make myself clear, Sakuno?"
"Ummm, Reinja-san, isn't that a bit long for her?" Sumire looked at Reinja, "Don't be too hard on Sakuno."
"Y-yeah," Momo agreed, "Please, lessen the punishment."
"One month is too long," Eiji said as he leaned a little closer to him. Milfie was doing the same thing, "I can't stay not seeing Milfie that long."
"What?" Milfie blushed at his words.
"What's with the connection at Eiji-san's words to their request?" Gakuto whispered to Oshitari. The latter just shrugged.
Reinja sighed as he closed his eyes, "Two weeks, fair enough?"
"I-it's fine!" Sakuno answered before the others could protest, "I… I am okay with it."
"You will not see anyone for two weeks even Echizen-san," Reina said this time, "Your phone will be confiscated as well."
"H-hai…" She responded as she looked down. She would not be seeing Ryoma for two weeks but that was okay for her. It was better that way than not seeing him forever.
"And you!" Reina looked at Ryoma making him flinch, "No more sneaking around the mansion. Make sure that you'll do a proper visit… in front of our door."
"H-hai!" Ryoma said as he stuttered. He narrowed his eyes to his senpais when he heard them snickering in the background. They knew his secret and it was all thanks to Sakuno's mother.
"That's okay," Jones said as he tapped Chris' back, "One tennis player is enough in our family."
Chris sighed as his father was trying to comfort him. He knew that it was hard to adjust. He couldn't promise but he would try. He would just try.
"D-dad…" Sakuno walked a few steps from her father.
Reinja looked at her and saw the expression to her eyes. He understood what she was trying to say. Sighing, he closed his eyes for a few minutes before he announced his thoughts;
"I'll give you five minutes," He said as he faced everyone, "Let's go home everyone. The party's over."
The people who understood what he said leaded the way. The rest followed afterwards. They only realized what Reinja meant after a few seconds. They snickered after leaving the two behind.
Chris didn't have a choice but to follow. Mary comforted him soon as she assisted him. Jones saw how he looked at her for the last time before he turned away and walked to the exit with his mother. Of all the people there, he was the only one who could understand him.
From the moment he accepted the truth, he was already the true winner of that game. He was proud of his son as well.
Later on:
The area was awfully quiet once they left. She was looking where everyone went and even though they were not at sight anymore, she was still looking at it. He, on the other hand was just looking at her. He never left his position ever since the interruption of the game. He was still in the process of staring at her when she looked at his way. When she did that, he changed his position a little and looked at her sideways;
"Game, set, match…"
"E-Echizen Ryoma." She continued as she gave him a weak smile.
His eyes softened as he looked at her and replied, "Hai…"
She started running to his location and she closed her eyes, "Ryoma-kun!" She called to his name once again as she reached him encircling her arms to his neck.
Ryoma dropped his racket in the process together with his hat because of the sudden impact. If he was not good at balancing, they would have fall back on the ground. He held her to her waist as she nuzzled her face to his neck.
"You are… the stupidest person I've ever met!" She said as she started to cry.
Ryoma gave her a smile that she didn't know. He closed his eyes as he tightened his hold to her, placing his chin to her head;
"Mada mada dane… Sakuno."
Done! How was this chapter? Finally! They are together now. But what will happen after this? I feel sad for Chris here… who among you feel the same way? Anyone? Someone? Hmmmm…
