Another chapter for my fellow readers.
Enjoy!
Prompt: Can you make the next one where she finds out liv has PTSD?Now that you bring it up maybe a chapter on Liv needing Kat's comfort...
Kat's Age: 12
Kat slowly opened her eyes. She didn't know why but her body felt alert. She sat up on her bed and turned on the lamp that was on her nightstand. Her eyes scanned around her room. She glanced at the digital alarm clock and it read just past one o clock in the morning.
She then heard muffled crying. Kat's heart started to beat faster as the crying continued.
"Stop!"
Throwing the bed cover off, Kat hastily walked out of her room and ran to her mother's room. She couldn't really see that much in the room but she could hear her mother trashing around the bed crying and slightly yelling. Kat rushed to the side of the bed and turned on the lamp on one of the nightstands.
"Please let me go!" Liv, who was still having a nightmare, kicked the bed cover more forcefully.
Kat's eyes widen in horror as her mother started to trash more violently. She started to shake her mother's arm and yelled, "Mom! Wake up! Mommy! Please wake up!"
Olivia still continued to trash around in her bed and continued to sob. "Somebody help me! Please! Fin!"
Kat rushed to the other side of the bed and quickly pulled the bed cover off since it started to get tangled on her mother's legs. Once she pulled the cover off she quickly climbed the bed and firmly but gently started to shake her mother's shoulders.
"Mom you have to wake up!" Kat shakily said. She was starting to get scare seeing her mother crying in her sleep and trashing around violently. She didn't know what the detective was dreaming about but she had to wake her mother up. "Please mommy! Wake up! Mom!"
Suddenly Olivia opened her eyes and sat up. She gasped for breath for a couple of minutes before her breathing started to turn to normal. She wiped the sweat on her face as the pounding of her ears faded away.
"Mom?"
Liv slightly jumped in surprised and glanced at her daughter who was starring at with wide eyes. The detective tucked a strand of hair behind Kat's ear before she pulled her into a hug. Olivia kissed the top of her daughter's head and could smell the tinge of apple from the shampoo.
Kat slightly winced at the strong grip of the hug but stayed quiet. She could feel the detective slightly shaking. She hugged her mother back and waited in silence.
"I'm so sorry honey," Liv let go of her daughter after a couple of minutes. "I didn't mean to wake you."
" 's okay," Kat shrugged. She bit her lip as she stared at her mother. "Did you have a nightmare?"
Olivia sighed heavily. "You can say that."
"Want to talk about it?"
"No," the detective flatly said.
The young Benson stiffened at the tone of her mother's voice. Ever since her mother came back from undercover, the detective has been having a lot of mood swings. One moment she will be happy but then out of nowhere she would be distant and quiet. It worried Kat.
"Oh. Um okay," Kat mumbled, looking down at her stripped pajama pants. "I just worry about you. That's all."
"Sweetheart," Liv whispered as she gently grasped her daughter's chin. She waited until Kat made eye contact with her. "It's not a conversation I want to have right now. Maybe in the morning I will explain. But not now."
"I understand," Kat softly said once her mother let go of her chin. Suddenly an idea came to Kat. She didn't know if it would work but she had to try. "I'll be right back."
"Where are you going?"
"Just wait."
Olivia frowned in confusion when Kat got off the bed and walked out of her room.
Kat rushed to the kitchen as she turned on the light. Whenever she had a nightmare, her mother would give her some hot chocolate or a glass of warm milk to help her go back to sleep. Since her mother was the one that had a bad dream, Kat thought that it will be a good idea if she made her some tea.
The dark haired girl grabbed the detective's favorite mug and placed it in the counter, while she looked for the little tea box. Once she found it she grabbed one of the tea bags and put it in the mug. She then grabbed the kettle and filled it just enough for a cup before she put it on the stove. She didn't have to wait long for it to start whistling.
As Kat poured the hot water on the mug, she heard footsteps coming from her mother's room.
"You're making tea?" Liv tilted her head slightly to the side as she walked in the kitchen.
"For you," Kat smiled slightly as she put the kettle on the stove again to let it cool off. "You always made me hot chocolate. I thought you would like some tea to help you sleep."
The detective smiled at her daughter, pulling her into a side hug again. "Since when do you how to make tea?"
"Cragen taught me when you went undercover," Kat shrugged. "It's not rocket science, mom."
"Thank you," Liv whispered close to her daughter's ear.
"No need to thank me mom," Kat mumbled, fiddling with her hands.
"So Cragen likes to drink tea, huh?" the detective slightly smirked.
Kat chuckled lightly and looked up at her mother. "Yeah. But you can't tell him or else he will stop giving me licorice."
"I promise."
Five minutes later, Kat took the tea bag out of the mug and pass the mug to her mother. Kat decided to turn on the tv to see if that will distract her mother from the nightmare that she just had. It didn't take long for both Bensons to fall back asleep with Olivia's arms wrapped around her daughter. Only that helped prevent the detective from having that horrible dream again.
The next morning, Kat was the first to wake up. It took her almost ten minutes to squirm out of her mother's embrace. Not that she minded her mother's hugs but she needed to use the bathroom. Badly. After she took care of nature's business, she went to her room and brought out her favorite blanket. She threw the blanket over her mother before going to the kitchen and serves herself a bowl of Captain Crunch cereal.
Kat sat down on the armchair near the couch and flipped through the channels until she found a music video she liked. Halfway through her cereal was when Olivia woke up. At first she frowned in confusion not remembering how she got in the couch until flashes from last night came to her mind.
"Hey," Liv groggily said.
"Hi," Kat slightly smiled to her.
"What time is it?" The detective rubbed her eyes with the palm of her hand.
"Almost noon," Kat sipped her bowl.
"And you let me sleep this late?" Liv frowned, sitting up.
The young girl glanced at her mother. "I figured you would be tired…from the nightmare you had last night."
Olivia stared at her daughter for a couple of more seconds before patting the empty spot next to her. Kat placed the bowl on top of the coffee table and went to sit next to her mother.
"I'm guessing you want to know what happened last night," Liv sighed.
"Does it have to do when you went undercover?" Kat grimaced. "You have been…different ever since you came back. Mood swings, sometimes distant, and sometimes it seems like you're not mentally here."
Olivia reached for her daughter's hand. She rubbed her thumb in a circular manner as she gathered her thoughts. She glanced at Kat and softly started to explain. "Something happened to me when I was undercover."
"Like what?" Kat whispered, afraid to speak louder.
"I'm not going to tell you exactly what happen because I don't think you are old enough for them. But I will tell you parts of it."
"Okay."
"Did Cragen tell you where I was been undercover?"
Kat nodded. "At a prison. Fin went with you as a guard."
"He was right," Liv swallowed the lump that was forming on her throat. "Fin went as a guard and I went as a prisoner. A guard in that place was hurting women and he hurt a young girl that was the daughter of a prisoner. So we went undercover to catch the bastard."
"You said something happened to you? Did he hurt you?" Kat softly said, squeezing her mother's hand. "Did he hurt you like he hurt the other women and the girl?"
Liv sniffed and wiped her eyes before the tears could fall. "He tried. But Fin got in time."
Kat let go of her mother's hand and hugged her tightly. Liv immediately wrapped her arms around her daughter and closed her eyes.
"Is that what your nightmare was about?" Kat mumbled against her mother's shoulder. "Of that monster?"
"Yes, sweetheart," Liv pulled her daughter closer to her. Just holding her daughter made the images that wanted to appear on her head go away.
"So your mood swings, your distance and anxious is because of what happened?"
"Yes. It's called PTSD."
Kat frowned and slightly pulled back from her mother. "I heard that before…"
"When a terrible even happens to someone and something triggers them, they start having flashbacks or they think that it is happening to them again."
The young Benson looked up at her mother. "Like victims get it after their assaulted?"
"Exactly."
Kat hugged her mother again. "Will it ever go away?"
"With time."
Kat nodded and didn't want to let go of her mom. She didn't want anything or anyone hurting her mom ever again like that asshole guard tried to do. She just hoped that her mom would not have another nightmare again and that she will stop having PTSD.
Next chapter will be up next week.
I have been working on another SVU story and that will also be uploaded either tomorrow or on Monday.
