Chapter 21
The whole place was silent as Rick finished. No one said a word. His group was staring at him with wide eyes. Daryl was looking at him with so many emotions at once: anger, sadness, guilt, maybe even a little fear. Rick just stood there breathing hard. Finally, everything he had wanted to say had come out. He was sick of Daryl treating him like he didn't even exist. He'd saved the boy's life. At least a 'thank you' would have been nice. Maybe bringing in the kid's private life wasn't such a good idea. He actually regretted saying that in front of the whole group. Lori looked at him, "Wait he's living with you now?" No one answered. Daryl wasn't saying anything. Rick thought that Daryl would've jumped up at him again but he didn't move. He was quiet, like he had been at the house the night before. Rick knelt down in front of Daryl, "Alright come on." To everyone's surprise, Daryl got up and started to follow Rick out of the park. The group stood still as Rick moved away from them. He needed to get Daryl away from them. They walked slowly back to Rick's house. Neither of them talked.
When they reached the house, Rick opened the door and the two went inside. Rick walked into the kitchen and sat down at the table. Daryl sat down across from him. Rick rubbed his head and then looked across at Daryl, "I'm sorry I shouldn't have said those things about you." Daryl just shook his head and didn't say anything. Rick continued to look at him, "It wasn't right, especially in front of them. They didn't need to know you had problems at home. I had no business to spit that out." Daryl looked at him and Rick continued "I saw the scars when we were at the hospital, so I know it must have been bad." But whatever happened at your home is nobody's business but yours. Daryl nodded but didn't say anything. "I really am sorry, Rick said. Daryl nodded again and got up to leave the room. He went upstairs and Rick sighed. This was not going to be easy, living with Daryl. Rick called upstairs that he was going out again and then left.
He walked to the center of town and ended up buying some ice cream to eat. Maggie was the one who showed up this time, "Rick, how long has Daryl been living with you?" Rick shook his head, "Just a day. He'll be with us for a while." Maggie nodded, "Why didn't you tell us?" Rick turned away, "I thought it was better for him." The girl smiled, "You're a really nice guy Rick. I wish that he'd see that." Rick shrugged, "It doesn't matter. He can think what he wants." Maggie rolled her eyes, "Rick if that was true you wouldn't be talking about this with me. You want him to think you're a good person." Rick sighed, "I just wish he would stop acting like such a jerk all the time. Maggie nodded, "If there's one thing I know about Daryl, it's that he's a hard person to change. But I think you might be a good influence on him. " Rick smiled, "You think? He has barely even talked to me and we live in the same house." Maggie looked at him as she walked away, "Just give him some time." Rick watched her go and wondered if she was right or not. Did he really want to have an influence on Daryl? He just wanted to not have to worry about him anymore.
When he got home Daryl was downstairs in the living room sleeping on the couch. That was weird. Rick walked quietly past him and headed upstairs to his room. It wasn't really late yet. Not even close to night time. Daryl slept too much. Maybe it was a make up for loss of sleep before. He stopped his train of thought and back pedaled. He wasn't going there. It wasn't his business. But it was. Daryl was living with him now. Maybe he should find out what happened. Maybe it would help Daryl if he talked to someone. Rick stopped this train of thought, there was no way Daryl was going to talk about this.
