Greetings reader,
Author Note: I have decided to post this early for Easter Sunday (and because of some good reviews). It's a little short for my taste but I promise the next chapter will make up for it.
Enjoy :)

Chapter 21:
All But A Game

Boo's Woods;
Luigi's Mansion

After hours of struggling futilely, Mr. L finally given up against the rope and sat there helplessly. It didn't take long for Shade to appear in front of him with Dimentio right behind him.
You see the jester never really left. He had turned himself invisible so he could watch the final minutes of the red hero. Unfortunately, he didn't count on the old sorceress he encountered months ago to make a sudden reappearance.
Mr. L flinched within the ropes, expecting his master to dish out some punishment for his failure. Once Shade had cut through the ropes, Mr. L was free to move again. He removes the ropes around him and stood up to face his master, his head cast down shamefully. Dimentio frowned,
"Why the long face, my servant? You haven't failed yet."
Mr. L looked up to him in surprise. "I haven't?"
Dimentio shook his head. "Nope, not at all; you may have lost your prey but you know where they are heading." He smirked, "If fact, this little setback just makes it even more interesting! Like a game of cat and mouse; the hunter, the cat, must first track down his prey, the mouse, before receiving his prize."
Mr. L nodded. "I understand."
Dimentio smiled. "Very good; now, I think we gave them enough time. You two go out there and enjoy yourself. Don't forget to bring me back something."
The two minions bow to him and headed straight for the door to find their escaped preys. Dimentio watch them go, his smile as wicked as ever. This game was surely more interesting.

Mario sat down by a window, the same window he was looking through when he was watching over the festival a while back. In his hand he had his brother's soul. The golden orb shines bright, but not as bright as it was before; a pure sign that it was weakening.
Mario sighed. He wasn't sure what to do. On one hand, if they do attempt the spell again then there's a great chance that Luigi would be killed. On the other hand, Dimentio will forever have Mr. L as his slave and his brother will be force to meet up with Queen Jaydes in the afterlife. Either way, his brother's going to end up died and all Mario really wanted was his little brother back alive.
He sighed again and looked down at the soul in his hand. Seeing the state his brother was in now made Mario feel like a failure. As the older brother, he should have been there to protect him from Dimentio. Instead, he ran off and left him to defend for himself.
'It's not your fault.'
Mario jumped in his seat when he heard a voice talking to him. He looked around, but there was no sign of anyone in the room with him.
"Weegie…?" He said softly.
He turned back to the soul in his hand. The voice sounded like his brother and felt like it was talking to him from the inside.
"Weegie, was that…you?"
No words come from the soul. Mario frowned, assuming it was all in his head. But as some sort of late reaction, it brightens in response.
Mario blinked in surprise; the corners of his mouth curve slightly upwards. Cybele was right, his brother was strong. Even in his weakest state, he still makes an effort to get though him somehow.
Standing up, Mario started heading for the door, his decision already made up. If his brother was reluctant to move on by now, then the least they could do is give the spell a chance. The likelihood of succeeding may be small, but it was a whole lot better than nothing at all.
Mario gently clutched to soul closer to himself, promising he would protect it from harm and get his body back one way or another. The soul brightens, as if it understood the red hero's protectiveness and promise. But soon it dimmed; it's light not as bright as it once was. Mario frowned; time was running out. He had to get his brother's soul back to his body soon.
"Don't worry little brother. This game is far from over yet."

The sun has completely set and the moon has risen in the sky. Princess Peach's castle was usually peaceful during this time. But tonight, tension was high in the air.
The Green Thunder and his Shadowpup stood in front of the castle. They knew the heroes were in there. Now all they had to do is find them and put an end to their lives once and for all.
Mr. L turned to Shade. The black ghost pup was getting eager to get started. "You ready?"
Shade turned to him and nodded.
"Well then, you know what to do."
Shade wagged his tail and ran straight towards the castle while Mr. L stayed behind. This time, the mechanic wasn't going to take any chances. He had Shade take the lead with him following behind. The Shadowpup was to locate the targets first and alert Mr. L of their whereabouts. Once they were found, Mr. L would come in and take them out instantly.
With his plan set in mind, the Green Thunder started walking inside the castle. He smirked. By midnight tonight, the hero Mario, Princess Peach, and Princess Daisy will be pronounced died.
"Let the game begin."
