Sorry D':
What If I Can't Forget You?
Alfred's P.O.V.
I didn't want to leave him, but he needed his time alone with Francis and I needed to wait for Arthur. I stayed and cleaned up the coffee before sitting again with the same bored expression. It felt like hours had passed when I finally heard someone call out Arthur's full name.
"Anyone here for Arthur Kirkland!?" Said a woman.
Immediately, I stood up and grinned. "Me!" She smiled at me and told me to follow her. I was hoping she would explain his condition but she never said anything besides the room number and floor. When we finally got there, she had me wear some sort of doctor thing before I entered.
"What's it for?" I asked.
"Well…we don't exactly know what he has yet, and this is safety precautions for both the visitor and patient." She pulled her gloves on and opened the door.
"Come on." He entered the room to find Arthur hooked to different things, it was all so confusing. He looked like an experiment.
"Problem is, he responds to our tries of waking him up but he never actually wakes up. He would only shift and occasionally grunt here and there. His heart rate seems normal and his blood pressure is perfectly fine." She walked towards a man who had a clip board.
"Wait here." She said, going off into a separate conversation with the man.
I walked towards Arthur and saw that his breath was controlled. I grabbed a stool and sat.
"Hey." No response. "How are you?" No response.
"…I don't know what happened but…and with Francis…then you turned out to be…he panicked…..got hurt…and…and!" Alfred looked around, trying to figure out what else to put into the sentence.
"And…and you've got me worried sick. I might pass out right here and now." Alfred finished. He saw Arthur breathe, but no words came.
"Hey...Artie…I'm sorry…I…don't know what I was thinking." He brushed some of the hair that was blocking Arthur's eyes.
"Did I ever tell you that you looked so familiar...like I met you somewhere before…I don't know when or where but…I know we did Artie." Arthur gave a grunt and turned his head away from Alfred.
"Hey…" He turned Arthur's head back to him. "Don't be shy…Oh god, I'm talking to myself again."
"That's alright; we think it might help for him." Alfred jumped when he heard the voice. It had a slight Australian accent.
"Hey, no need to worry! I'm just the guy who's looking after Arthur and diagnosing him!" The man he saw was probably in his late 20's to mid 30's.
"W-What do you know!?"
"Ah yes, ummm…-"the man looked at Alfred for a moment.
"A-Alfred, its Alfred."
"Ah yes, Alfred, you see we know just as much as you know." The doctor moved towards Arthur's bed.
"I honestly have never seen it, but then again I did just start."The man chuckled."It's as if he is in a coma but he reacts to everything we do…well mostly everything. His body is functioning perfectly fine. Unfortunately, this can affect him severely. Because his body is functioning as if he is actually awake, not even as if the body should act when asleep, this will cause exhaustion and at some point the body will become so tired out from working hard for endless hours, his life will be put in danger. It's like an all nighters for a few weeks. And he cannot get the energy necessary, though we are feeding him through these tubes, it is not enough. He needs so many vitamins and such from everyday things, like walking out in the sun. So, if we are not able to wake him up, then there is a possibility of him dying-"
"HOLD ON, NO ONE SAID ANYTHING ABOUT DEATH!" Alfred shouted.
The man simply looked at him, wide eyed. "…my…why I thought they had already told you this." He looked at the nurse or doctor or whatever with an angry sort of stare. "My apologies Alfred, I thought you knew. But it is necessary that you know. You were bound to find out."
Alfred felt like he was on the verge of tears. He couldn't stand it. The doctor walked up to him and gave him a pat on the back.
"I'm…really…uhh…I apologize." The man was obviously not use to these things. He held out his hand.
"Uhh…I'm Dr. Valectiones. You can call me Erynn, though. I'll be the one taking care of Arthur and I do hope you don't mind." Alfred shook his head.
"I'm sorry for shouting sir." Alfred said.
"Oh no, there's nothing wrong with that, I would have done the same exact thing. I must say though, I used to know Arthur."
Alfred looked at him.
"Seriously?" Alfred was surprised.
"Indeed. I used to hangout with him when he was a bit younger, we had kept in touch until the third year of high school where his mother prohibited him from seeing me. You see, I was good friends with his father and she didn't want any reminders of him, since obviously she hates him, and you might want to close your mouth." Alfred closed his mouth. "Any who, it wasn't like I was a bad influence, no! But, in reminding her of her husband, oh yeah, I was totally guilty. I do blame myself; I did bring him up a lot to Arthur. He was a great man but certain things happened and he didn't end up being a father figure to Arthur. I figured, I might as well tell Arthur the good things since he pretty much only saw his Father's bad side. His mother liked it like that though; he would have favoured her if I hadn't told him more of his Father, which I do not regret. Of course, he doesn't favour his father either. Oh no, he doesn't like either one of them. But hey, I tried. He did have a rough childhood. Told me all about a friend of his that he ended up falling in love with at what age was it? Age eleven I think it was. Something about blonde hair and eyes that were blue like the sky, a pair of glasses and his name was A-"Erik took a good look at Alfred and hesitated.
"-AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAhhhh yes, I think I forgot his name." Erynn smiled at Alfred. Alfred tilted his head, wondering what he had wanted to say, but did not ask.
"What happened with his friend" Alfred asked.
Erynn grabbed the papers from the cabinet next to Arthur. "Ditched him." Erynn said.
"Ditched him?" Alfred asked.
"Yes but…" Erynn gave Alfred a skeptical look. "I believe he has more to add to the story now. Maybe he learned the other person's side. I still don't know if he found him-" He looked away from Alfred. "-or not. It has been a few years, and I had not planned our next visit to be like this. I was thinking more along the lines of a restaurant with a candle lit dinner-"
"Wait, what?" Alfred said in a disgusted tone.
Erynn laughed. "Calm down! I'm just kidding. I can't date him, he's like 19 or whatever and I'm like…Oh god that's such a horrifying number, 28. So close to Thirty, I'm getting rather old!" Erynn looked devastated.
"It's not that old, besides, you look 23!" Alfred said, getting into his hero mode again.
"Oh please no need to compliment an old guy like me!" Erynn took a quick look at Arthur and began to jot notes down. He got closer to his face.
"Uhh, what are you doi-"
"Shush." Erynn stared at Arthur's closed eye lids. He seemed deep in thought.
"…his breath is slower than yesterday. For some reason, I think his condition is getting worse. He looks paler and his lids won't even flutter even at the close proximity. His mouth doesn't twitch anymore and…" he touched Arthur's cheek with one hand and pressed two fingers on his neck. "-he's cold, someone turn on the heat, his heart beat is just a little bit off from yesterday. Not too much. And I said that all out loud didn't I?"
Erynn looked at Alfred.
"Y-yes…you did."
"Good, now you know his condition." For that one moment, Erynn was actually serious about what he was doing, but it left as soon as his goofy grin returned on his face.
"I know it sounds severe, but it's really not that bad. It's just a little off from yesterday. It's not so much of a difference, but it's good to observe their health. For instance, his lips barely twitched yesterday, well I say yesterday more like a few hours ago, but if I had not pointed it out the team wouldn't have noticed. He's fine, stop worrying too much, and be careful; you might break the edge of that chair." Alfred hadn't noticed his grip getting stronger on the chair, but immediately let go when Erynn had told him to.
"Anyways!" Erynn jotted down the final observations and put the papers back where they belonged.
"How about something to eat? My treat." Erynn smiled at Alfred.
End of chapter 21
A/N: It sucks I know, but I had to get it up. Uhh, Erynn is an OC of mine. He isn't a major character but he isn't a background character either. He'll be present for a few chapters and then it should be about every four or three chapters, regularly.
Please forgive me for any medical mistakes; no I do not major in medical. Well…yeah I'm going to study it but I'm not going to learn all the complicated stuff yet. So I know nothing of how these things work.
Arthur's state isn't severe, besides the whole death thingy-ma-bob, but that needs like two months to kick in. He should wake up soon…I think I should make the next chapter about Matthew instead. He needs the spotlight for a bit…yeah. See ya next chappie! Thanks for reading!
Ciao
