Diane ran to hug Eric, who in turn picks her up and spins her around, both laughing loudly.
"Look at you!" Eric says putting his hands on both sides of her face, "You're all grown up! You look gorgeous! Almost like a woman."
"Almost like a woman? I am a woman! We're only one year apart! If I'm all grown up then so are you. Look at you! Oh gosh, look at your muscles! The tattoos! Really Eric? Did you need all of those tattoos? And that piercing? I hear that you're a legend in Dauntless."
"Leave me alone about the tattoos and piercing, you knew I was going to get them. I had more than the stud, but the Stiff wouldn't have that. And yes, I am fucking legend! Always have and always will."
"The Stiff?" Diane asks confused. ''Stiff' is slang for people in Abnegation, but no one in the room was Abnegation, so who was he talking about?' Diane thought.
"Oh sorry," Eric turns and motions to Tris to come by his side, "Diane this is my girlfriend Tris, Tris this is my sister Diane."
"Sister?" Four speaks up, "You're Eric's sister? But you're beautiful and nice! And you can actually hold up a decent conversation! Same mother and father?"
"I can see the resemblance." Says Peter, trying to support his friend.
"I didn't know you were Eric's sister. Caleb, why didn't you tell me?" Tris asks.
"I just found out myself." He responded.
"Your sister is dating my brother." Tris announces to Eric.
"Is that so?" he quietly responds, now looking at Caleb in a different manner. Tris quickly notices and acts.
"Yes, it is. Your sister is dating my handsome, intelligent, trustworthy, protective and overall awesome brother." She declares with her hands crossed together over her chest, as if to make sure that the point was understood. And from Eric's smirk, it was.
"Well that's nice then. We can all be happy family!" Christina exclaims.
"I have to go to the doctor. Stay and talk to your sister, I'll go with Caleb." Tris tells Eric.
"No, it's alright. I'll go with you." He quickly answers.
"Warrior, the doctor is right over there," pointing at a short, bald, round man with thick glasses, "Caleb, come." And she leaves them to catch up. The others follow suit. Eric and Diane sit down on the chairs next to the table.
"How are you?" Diane starts the conversation
"I'm good. I'm actually good. Yourself?"
"I'm good and happy. I'm so happy to see you here. I'm glad that you're on our side, Eric. I was worried that you'd fight against us."
"Honestly, if it wasn't for the Stiff, I would have. I don't care about the actual cause but I do care that it's affecting her and our future."
"Why do you keep calling her that? She's a Dauntless member now."
"She'll always be the Stiff to me. So, you and what's his name?"
"His name is Caleb and I don't think that Beatrice would be to happy to hear you call her brother that."
"Are you happy though? Does he make you happy?"
"More than I could actually have dreamed. He's not perfect but he's perfect for me. We synchronize well. How about you? Are you happy?"
"I wasn't for a very long time. But then she came along and everything changed. Diane she honestly makes me happy. Like she makes it worth it, you know?"
"I completely understand."
"Her demons play well with mine." He stopped to smile, to give his sister a genuine smile, "We went to the community pool the other day. Do you know how long it's been since I've gone? And Diane, I had a blast! Nothing changed!"
"I haven't been in years! When this is all over, we should all go! You, Beatrice, Caleb, mom, dad and I." At the mention of his parents, Eric became gloomy.
"We still talk about you, Eric. The notion of 'Blood before Faction' is an unrealistic and non-pragmatic concept. How can a parent stop loving or wanting their child? It's preposterous! We've never believed it. You're still their son and my brother."
"Thank you. If I'm honest with myself, I've missed you all. When I went to the community pool, all of the memories hit me at once. I could smell and taste mom's cooking, hear your laugh and dad's arguments about the latest articles."
"We still celebrate your birthday. I know it's illogical to celebrate when you're not there, but it's our way of supporting you." This revelation truthfully touched Eric. He knew that his family didn't disown him but he never thought that they still thought of him and honored him.
"Do they know about all of this?" he asks her.
"No. If I tell them anything, it will be when all of this is over." 'If I don't end up dead.' she thought. "They would have been against Jeanine's plans, that's for sure. You know what they thought of her to begin with."
"I know. I was telling them about it."
"Can I be honest?" she asks.
"When have you ever lied to me?"
"Good point. I'm shocked that you and Beatrice are together. She doesn't seem like your type."
"Let's just say that I was guided by a dream."
"Can you be more detailed?"
"Nope. That's all I'm going to say. Why do you keep calling her 'Beatrice' when her new name is 'Tris'? It has something to do with Caleb. Am I right?"
"She's his sister. If he calls her 'Beatrice' then so will I, until she states otherwise."
"She's not going to. She still has some of that Abnegation upbringing⦠So is it serious? Your relationship, I mean."
"Yes. Last night, we actually talked about marriage and having kids. Well when all of this is over with of course."
"Diane, I'm happy for you. And I'm also happy. I'm happy to see you today because I didn't think that I would ever have the chance. I'm happy that you found a good man, who is making you happy. Your happiness is making me happy, dear sister." And with that Eric gave his sister a tight bear hug, just like he used to give her as a child.
Meanwhile, across the room, two other siblings are also having a sentimental conversation.
"So, what do you think of him?" Caleb's love for his sister is indescribable. There isn't a thing that he wouldn't do for her and vice versa. He also knows that his opinion mattered to Tris, whether it is positive or negative. They had always sworn to each other to tell the truth and have no secrets, and today would be no different.
"He's very intelligent, obviously coming from an Erudite background, his strategic approach is very logical and pragmatic. He also seems to deeply care for you. For that, I appreciate him even more."
"How do you know that he cares for me? You guys didn't even talk about me."
"He was hurt that you had left him out from the mission. A look of hurt can only come from someone who cares."
"Do you approve then?" That was the real question that was in her mind, would she get his approval? From the way that the conversation is going, she thinks that she will but she needed to hear the actual words.
"Yes. I approve of him."
"Thank you, Caleb." She tells her brother while hugging him. "How come you never asked me what I thought of Diane?" That had also weighed on her mind.
"Beatrice, even when you were in Abnegation you always spoke your mind. I don't see why it would be any different now. If you had disapproved, you would have told me. I don't need to be in Erudite to know that."
"She loves you, you know. And honestly Caleb that's all that matters to me."
"Thank you." He responds and squeezes her harder.
Tori goes to Four and whispers that they have to go, they've been here for far too long. "I don't mean to interrupt your family reunions but we have to go." Four announces. "Don't forget that we're still coming back this week. So say goodbye so we can get a move on." Eric hugs his sister one last time, Tris hugs Caleb once more and then Diane, and everyone heads out.
The ride on the train was lighter and happier than before. Everyone felt a sense of accomplishment: the covert operation was taking shape; Eric was a great asset with valuable information and the points that he made were of importance. Peter was another essential asset due to his expertise in hand-to-hand combat and weaponry. Tori was another source of information thanks to her Homeless Network. Once they arrived at their destination, everyone separated. Eric went with Tris to her apartment while Peter went with Christina to hers. The second that the door closed, Eric confronted Tris.
"Why didn't you want me in the mission?"
She knew that he would ask her questions, but she didn't know that it would be so quick. She takes a deep breath and prays that the truth would be enough for him. "First, I didn't know how you would react to my Divergence. I knew that you knew that Max and the others were hunting them, but I didn't know if you were part of the hunting team. And if you were, how the hell would you feel about your girlfriend being one of them? Second, I don't want anything happening to you, Eric. Four has been bugging me ever since we started going out to ask you to join." She stops long enough to go sit on the couch. "Eric, I know what Dauntless is, I know what we signed up for, I know that there's a chance we might die. Shit, someone died jumping from the train to the roof right after our Choosing Ceremony! Trust me, I know what I signed up for. I love you and I didn't want anything happening to you. It has nothing to do with me doubting you and your skills as a Dauntless. Was that really bad of me?"
Eric walks up to the couch to sit by her.
"It's not bad of you, but it's bad for the cause. I get what you're saying, trust me, I still remember the fucking week you were missing, but there's a bigger picture right now. If you had included me months before, this would have been done by now."
"We weren't dating months before. Also, aren't you too sure of yourself?"
"My confidence is what got me through Erudite and Dauntless."
"Are you still mad at me?"
"I was never mad at you. I was hurt, not mad. Now that I know your reasoning, I'm no longer hurt." He says and leans in for a light kiss on the lips.
"Hey, I could use an extra hour of shut eye. Come lay with me." And just like he blindly followed her into a cause that wasn't his own, he also followed her into the bedroom.
