Chapter 21
Ran couldn't utter the voice from herself. She instead stared at her father, with her eyes wide opened; waiting for him to tell her that what she just had heard was a lie. It had to be a lie. She tried to speak something, but she couldn't.
She tried to stand up from the sofa, but her legs refused her to. Tears shined in her eyes
Kogoro kneeled down to his daughter and took her hands in his.
"Ran, I'm so sorry."
She took her hands away from her dad and sobbed. She covered her face with her hands. Her body was all shaking.
It hurt so much, too much. She wanted this pain to go away.
"Go away," Ran whined.
Kogoro wrapped his arms around Ran. "Ran I won't leave you. I know you think worse of me, now."
How could she think worse of her dad? He had saved the man, whom she loved the most, because... because...
She pushed her father away and gathered all the strength to stand up from the sofa, this time successful. She made few shaky steps ahead, but her legs felt weak.
Kogoro and Yukiko seeing Ran about to fall down quickly caught her.
"Ran, please, sits down. I know it's hard for you and I'm sorry..." Yukiko remained silent. She also had the tears in her eyes.
Ran pushed both her and Kogoro and she fell down on the floor. Her tears were streaming down.
"Why?" Her voice trembled.
Kogoro embraced his daughter. "Shh. It will be all right." Kogoro tried to ease Ran's pain in vain.
"It hurts," Ran cried. The pain was just too great. She could barely breathe.
"Please, stand up." Kogoro had to hold Ran, so she wouldn't fall down again.
"Please, please, go away, this pain, go away," Ran sobbed.
Kogoro hugged his daughter. Ran let her father to hold her for a moment, but she realized that there was something wrong in what her dad had told her. She felt the pain that she had never felt, before and her own mum was the cause of it. However, her mum would never make her to feel so much pain. Her mum would never try to kill anyone, especially, if she knew that this person was close to her daughter and was the son of her mum's friends. It didn't make any sense for Ran. There had to be other explanations for it.
Ran moved away from her father, while standing up. Her legs were still shaking, but she maintained the balance.
"It's a lie." Her voice was quivering. "It has to be a lie... my mum, she, she would never." Ran felt more tears rolling down on her cheeks, but she still fixated her eyes on her father, hoping to see the sign that she was right and that this whole story was just a lie.
Kogoro had sad face and didn't say anything.
Ran looked hopefully at Yukiko. "You don't believe it, right?"
Unfortunately, as longer as she saw sorrowful expressions on her dad's and Yukiko's faces, she knew that her dad hadn't lie.
"No," Ran whispered. "No," she repeated louder, this time. She had this little hope that maybe Kogoro had to lie for some reason and her mum was still alive and she hadn't tried to kill Shinichi. Her last hope vanished.
She looked around the room. The room that she hoped, she and her both parents would spend time together. She wished for her parents to be reunited together. However, it was impossible. Her hope of her mum and dad being together had gone.
Ran had to go away from this house. She ran towards the door.
"Ran where are you going?" Kogoro tried to stop his daughter from leaving.
"Let me go!" She pushed her dad away and stormed out.
Even though, she ran very fast, Kogoro still managed to catch her outside their house. Heavy rain was falling down from the dark sky.
"Come here Ran, come with me home." Kogoro tried to convince Ran to back home. Ran didn't listen and instead she broke away from her dad's hold and punched him into his stomach.
Kogoro groaned in pain holding his stomach. Ran looked down at her father, kneeling on the ground and took few shaky steps backwards.
"Ran, don't."
Ran turned around and ran as fast as she could. How did she manage to get this strength in her legs, she didn't know. She only wanted to run away as far as possible from the house, where she and parents would live together again and she would no longer be part of the broken family. It wasn't possible anymore. Her family remained broken, forever.
"Have you found her?" Kogoro asked.
"No, I haven't. I called Shin-chan, instead," Yukiko replied.
"I shouldn't let her run away." Kogoro tightened his fists and he gritted his teeth.
It passed around twenty minutes, since Ran had run away. Kogoro was extremely worried about her. It was raining and the night was pretty windy. In addition Ran had stormed out from the house with no jacket, having slippers on her feet, instead her shoes.
The worst was that he even didn't know where to look for her. He doubted that she would go to anyone. She mostly wanted to be alone. However, Kogoro still had to find his daughter. She couldn't be alone, not in this state.
Shinichi, Shiho and Agasa came. They all had worried expressions, though there was also some panic expressions on their faces
Shinichi looked at his mum with angry face. "How could you let your disguise to fail?"
"I'm so sorry, Shin-chan," Yukiko cried.
Shinichi ignored Yukiko and turned towards Kogoro. "What did you tell Ran?"
Kogoro looked at the ground and responded after few seconds, "Everything."
"What!" Shinichi exclaimed with shock.
"Oh my god!" Both Shiho and Agasa stared at Kogoro, having their eyes wide opened.
"How could you tell her everything?" Shinichi shouted.
"And what was I suppose to say, after Ran found out that Yukiko had disguised as Eri, all along!" Kogoro shouted back.
"Anything but the truth! We both knew how Ran would react to the news about her mum!"
"Yes, I knew, how Ran would react, but considering that you know Ran since you were kids and you were living under my roof for almost a year, you should know how stubborn Ran is and I doubt that she would believe in any more lies!"
Kogoro remembered the shock and disbelief on Ran's face. She had pointed out that the old man was the boss, not her mum. Kogoro forcefully made Ran to sit on the sofa, so he could tell her everything. It became much harder, when he reached to the part, where he, Conan and Ai had found out that Eri was the boss.
He remained silent, after he had told Ran about Eri's dad and her becoming the boss.
"What happened to mum?" Ran asked, after few minutes.
Kogoro didn't respond right away, but when Ran asked again, louder and more determinate, he answered, "She died."
Ran looked devastated after hearing that he mum had died, but she still demanded to tell her everything.
After few minutes, Kogoro revealed everything, what had happened in that room, including Eri trying to kill Conan and him pulling the gun's trigger.
He didn't look at his daughter, when he told her this. However, he regretted it now, like Kudo had said, he should come up with something, but it was like his brain was blocked from any stories that he could tell Ran about her mum.
However, what he would tell her. He couldn't lie about her mum being still alive. It was truth that he, the police and FBI had discussed what they would tell Ran about her mum, when Yukiko could no longer to pretend to be Eri. They either would tell Ran that Eri had moved to another country or that she had died in some sort of accident.
Unfortunately, when Kogoro was revealing the truth to Ran, he forgot about these ideas. He could tell Ran that Eri had been killed by the Black Organization and they were afraid to tell her the truth. Ran still would be heartbroken, but it wouldn't be worse from finding that her own mother had tried to kill people, whom she cared about.
"Instead of arguing, we should separate and try to find Ran," Shiho said.
They listened to her and went in different directions. Unfortunately, they weren't able to find her. Around half-hour later, Kogoro called the inspector Megure and explained him the situation. Megure promised to send his people for the search.
Kogoro hoped that Ran would be found soon. He only wanted to know that his daughter was all safe and sound. However, he knew that she was emotionally wrecked and it hurt him.
Ran tripped over, while she ran. She didn't know where she was. She didn't even know how far away she had run from her house. She shivered with her clothes being all soaked and her wet hair was stuck to her face.
She stood up having blank expression as she blocked everything around her. She didn't even feel the pain on her right palm and left knee where she wounded herself, when she fell down. She was standing for awhile and then she began to walk. She walked very slowly having her eyes down.
"Ran-chan!"
Ran didn't hear the voice calling her. She kept walking.
"Oh my god, Ran-chan, you are all soaked." Someone put jacket on her. However, it didn't make any difference to Ran. After all she wasn't able to feel any cold.
"Takagi call Mouri-san, tell him that we found Ran."
"Yes."
"You are all shivering. Here have my jacket too."
Ran let Takagi and Sato to bring herself to their car, though she wasn't fully aware of what was going on around her.
Sato sat with Ran behind in the car, holding Ran's hand. She said something to her, but Ran didn't hear it. Her mind blocked any sound reaching to her.
"Ran, thank god!" Kogoro hugged his daughter. "You found her, thank you."
"Ran, you need to change your clothes, before you catch pneumonia," Yukiko said.
She didn't respond or even look at Yukiko.
"She's in shock," Sato said.
"All right, I will help her to change and I'll tend her wounds, come here Ran." Yukiko grabbed Ran's hand. She raised her head and her eyes met Shinichi. Ran glanced at him, hearing her father's words in her head, she tried to kill Conan.
She opened her mouth. Tears again appeared in her eyes.
"Ran."
He must hate her, because of her mum. It wasn't surprising that he didn't want to spend time with her. Why would her? She was a daughter of a woman, who brought so much pain into his life.
Ran sobbed, but when she saw Shinichi coming to her, she screamed, "Don't!"
Shinichi stopped, where he was. Ran didn't look at him, so she couldn't see his hurtful expression. However, she wasn't able to be near him. She wasn't able to look into Shinichi's eyes, not after, what her mum had done to him.
Ran was lying down on her bed, with her clothes already changed into pyjama. She hadn't felt any pain for a moment, but everything came back to her, when she saw Shinichi.
She loved both her mum and Shinichi and it pained her that her mum had tried to take Shinichi's life. She couldn't understand it. How her mum could be so ruthless? How her mum could leave her daughter and her husband for the criminal organization that was killing people? Ran came to the bitter conclusion, her mum didn't love her. If she did, then she would never leave them and what's more, she would never try to kill Shinichi nor her dad.
Kogoro sat besides Ran and caress her hair. He wasn't saying anything. He only wanted to be there for his daughter.
"Why didn't you love me?" Ran asked all of sudden. Kogoro looked surprised, but didn't say anything.
"Why did you leave me mum?" Her voice was squeaky. It almost sounded as a little girl's voice.
"Mummy, I don't want you to leave. Please don't leave. Daddy will do better. I'll make him, I promise." Seven years old Ran wailed.
"I'm sorry Ran, I cannot stay here any longer, I have to go," Eri sounded sharp.
"No, mummy don't." Ran hugged her mum. She was determinate not to let go of her mum.
Eri kneeled down to daughter and said softly, "I need to go, but I want you to know that I love you, I always will, no matter what."
"Liar! If you would love me, then you wouldn't leave!"
Eri looked sadly at her daughter. "Ran, I'm sorry that I need to leave you, but it doesn't change the fact that I love you." Eri wiped Ran's tears away.
"Will you come back?" Ran asked hopefully.
"If your dad will learn how to behave."
"I teach him," Ran sounded determinate.
Eri laughed and kissed her daughter on her forehead.
Ran sobbed into her pillow. Her mum was a liar, after all.
