I was still lying on the floor, my head pounding, when Jace reappeared. His usually perfect hair was now slightly tousled, and his jacket had slide down his right shoulder.
"The hell was that?" I asked as Jace stomped out the fire with his heavy boot. He looked up and I could see the hard look on his face.
"I was just about to ask you the same thing." He said. His voice was cold. "What were you doing? I had been knocking for about 5 minutes but you didn't answer. The coldness in his eyes melted a little as he spoke. "I thought something was wrong with you so I came in anyway." He paused.
"I guess I wasn't wrong about that." Jace turned, so that he was facing me again. "I mean. You were freaking levitating. Why, no wait, HOW the hell did you do that?'
I looked at him, excitement bubbling inside me. "I was? I mean, really? Up in the air?"
Jace observed at me through squinted eyes. "Yea, it was really creepy too. You were all white and shiny. And well, you kind of looked dead." He tilted his head to the side, folding his arms in front of his chest. "What did you think you were doing?"
His voice sounded demanding, and I knew he was suspicious. But somehow I felt like I couldn't tell him the truth. He was on Ty's side – the side that was against me having any power at all.
"Nothing" I said, trying to sound nonchalant (and probably failing miserably – Lying to Jace was like telling my mom that I didn't steal a cookie when she had the wrapper in her hand).
"Just, you know, practicing some meditation exercises that Izzy taught me the other day" I said.
"Meditation, huh" He did not sound convinced. At all. "So tell me, Eva. Do a lot of people float 6 feet up in the air when they meditate?"
"Yea meditation. You know, channeling your inner energy. I quess- ehm, my power- I mean my energy! My energy must be really strong you know? Probably why I was eh- levitating."
But my hasted attempt to derive from the word 'power' did not pass Jace.
"Damn it Eve, you were practicing you power-thing, weren't you? Alec filled me in about it." He looked at me, his face all hard, worried lines again.
"By the Angel, Eva! Are you really THAT stupid? And I can't believe that Izzy –"
I broke him off mid-sentence, anger starting to boil inside me.
"That Izzy what? Helped me?! Because yes, she did. And that's a hell of a lot more than I can say of you and that dipshit brother of mine!" Jace opened his mouth to say something, but I held up my hand to stop him.
"She is helping me find a part of me. A part of me that could help save the world for Gods sake!"
Jace then grabbed me by the shoulder, shaking me hard. "You just don't get it! Why cant you freaking understand that I am – that we are trying to protect you Eva!" He took a deep breath, his jaw clenched.
"What do you think will happen when you get the whole power, all of it together? It's not going to be like some pretty fairy tale. It WILL hurt you, kill you probably. Hell, you might burst apart from the inside out." His eyes met mine, and held my gaze.
"Angelic powers are too strong for humans to bare." His hands pressed in my shoulders hard and I couldn't contain my frustration anymore. Before I could do anything about it, I started to rant. Complete and utter verbal vomit.
"You are just jealous, Jace Wayland" I said. "For years you were the best Shadowhunter they had in this place. The fastest, the strongest. You just can't take it that you might not be on top anymore when I get the power, so you try to stop me from getting it."
But as soon as the words had left my mouth, I knew they weren't true. "Jace, I –"
But before I could finish my apologies, his lips were on mine and he pulled me close. Minutes - maybe hours? I don't know – passed before I loosened myself from him. "But why –"
Jace grinned my favorite crooked smile at me. "You may not remember our past, but I do. And I'll never forget the ranting tantrums you would throw when Ty wouldn't give back your dolly or when you mom wouldn't give you a cookie." My face turned ruby and I quickly put my lips on his again.
We ended up talking all night, and even though he still didn't like it, he did agree to allow me to keep on practicing my power. Under the strong condition that I would only practice of Magnus. Who, to my annoyance, decided to visit Ibiza for no certain amount of time starting yesterday.
Note: I AM SOOOO SORRY FOR THE DELAY! I had some (boyfriend) drama which demotivated my writing slightly. I am planning to post the next chapter sooner. Again, sorry guys! And thanks for the sweet reviews =)
