A/N; Hello again! Sorry for another wait, it's been impossible for me to focus on just one story lately. So because of that this may be a little of an iffy update. I had three different ways of doing this chapter and this seemed the less confusing version... Hopefully it makes sense but incase it doesn't, sowie!
I swallowed heavily as I stumbled I my feet, eyes raking the table for a possible note before I pulled Belle out to the back room. I never thought Polly would abandon us, I never thought she'd leave me. But I couldn't dwell on it. I had to get us out of here. Polly had mentioned the garage yesterday when we walked in, she'd said there was transport there. I had to get out to it.
"Belle, I need you to stay right here while I get the bike, okay? Don't come out until I shout for you"
She nodded and I squeezed her hand, "What if they come in?" She whimpered scared. My gaze hardened and I felt that killer instinct come back at the thought of someone hurting her.
"They wont" It was a deadly promise. The first guy to step foot anywhere near this room was getting a one way ticket to hell.
Annabelle trembled a little and I realised I was scaring her. I gave her a quick comforting look and pulled her into me. My fingers stroked down her right arm and then snagged on something around her wrist. I looked down at the leather bracelet, mind flashing as my eyes locked onto the silver padlock, wondering where she'd gotten it from. She hadn't been wearing it before I fell asleep earlier.
"Where did you-" Glass hailed over us as the window was torn apart by a round of bullets. An echoing around us said the entire house was being hit at once. Talk about a bunch of cowards!
Belle yelped and cowered into me with the noise. I pulled her down and covered her with my body until the shooting stopped. She trembled in my arms and I could feel her trying to fight off crying. I kissed her head and closed my eyes for a second, just taking her in, before I moved to go outside. But she wouldn't let me. Her fingers pulled on my shirt and she yanked me back into her for a sudden kiss. Any other day I might have questioned it. But I guess I didn't need to. I flooded with misery when I realised what the kiss meant. It was Belle's own just incase goodbye.
"I'll be right back" I promised her, kissing her again before pulling her hands down and quickly leaving. I tried not to listen to her scared sob as I left. I knew I'd never be able to get this over with if I did.
I shut the door behind me and quickly slipped into the kitchen where I hurriedly searched through all the old drawers for a knife. I was only a little stunned when I found an entire cupboard full of weaponry. MI7 really took life seriously. I picked up and assembled a simple handgun and twisted the silencer over it, pausing briefly to let myself be surprised, before tucking a few knives into my belt. I left myself with that, deciding the quiet approach would be enough for now.
I was just pondering whether to go back and give Belle a gun for her own protection when the first torch light peaked under the door. I shut the cupboard door and ducked behind the counter. The door opened behind me as I loaded the gun and I mentally cussed at the guy. I couldn't cock the gun without him hearing and calling his mates in. I tucked it into my back pocket as I crept slowly around the counter island and I pulled a knife out instead.
He was looking through the cupboards as I rose to my feet, obviously searching for something. I crept up behind him and tightened my grip on the knife while I eyed his jacket. Standard leather. It'd be hard to stab through. Then I looked at his exposed neck, and I felt a little sick knowing what I had to do to take care of him. The knife shook a little as I stepped closer and I waited for him to finish his talk over the radio with the men outside before moving again. The floorboard creaked suddenly under my foot and he tensed a little. I saw his gun rise and I heard him take a deep breath. The kind you take before doing something big. Like shooting someone. I didn't give him a chance to turn around. I grabbed my gun and smacked him in the back of the neck with it. He groaned and collapsed to the floor, smacking his head into the counter as he went down. I kicked him to make sure he was really unconscious before letting myself relax.
I leant against the counter and breathed a little deeply, trying to calm myself down, trying to ignore the cruel memories. Trying to ignore my image of old Kelly stood beside me watching everything with a sternly disappointed look. She wouldn't have hesitated with that kill. And she wouldn't have been at all merciful like I had. But I couldn't help it. The idea of killing someone revolted me.
"Upstairs secure"
My head snapped up and I leapt behind the door as more voices crept up the hall outside towards me. I took a steadying breath and held the knife tighter in my hand. This time I couldn't be merciful. I had to kill.
The door opened against me a little and cautious footsteps walked into the room. I let the first man walk past and crouch down to the unconscious guard before I slammed the swing door shut on the other one walking into the room. He yelled when it broke his nose and I heard the angry grunts of the men he'd fallen backwards into. The noise span the first man around and he raised his radio to his mouth. The knife buried deep in his chest before he could call the alert and he looked down at it stunned. I didn't even stop to make sure he died, just kicked his radio and gun away and hurried off into the next room before the others could organise themselves enough to come in and attack.
I ran through the house, silently taking out guards while I tried to come up with a strategy. I could hear shouting outside and knew more men were coming in. I guess they'd been told not to underestimate us again after the train thing. It was as I was climbing out the window in the dining room I noticed torchlights making their way towards belle. I swore under my breath and crept back to the door. I didn't follow them to Belle. Instead I moved across the hall, stopping in time to catch another one upstairs. I pulled the silencer off the gun and shot the guy standing guard by the stairs, knowing the noise would attract them all. Call me mad but I was trying to get them as far away from Belle as possible. It worked. I had my work cut out for me trying to turn invisible again while they ran out into the hall. I was even panting a little from the effort.
Multiple steps followed me out into the snow. There was a light flurry of a storm starting around me as I walked, almost like the world was in tune with my mood. I wasn't about to complain. I needed all the help I could get. I smiled at the lightning starting it's first marathon across the black sky. I could use that for cover.
"Authorised to shoot any and all persons inside the house. Be vigilant guys, this girl knows what's she's doing"
I smirked and threw the radio away. I looked down at the soldier led gasping in the snow. His eyes were wide with fear when I bent down to him and he tried to crawl away, grunting a little when it made him bleed a little more.
"You should have listened to your bosses" I whispered to him.
He flinched when I raised my hand and I smiled some more before pressing my finger to my lips.
"Not a word" I warned him as I stood up to leave. He nodded and I could tell from the fear in his eyes that he'd stay silent.
I ran through the snow to the garage, shivering against the cold when the wind blew against me. Even with my jacket on it was freezing. There was only one guard waiting for me at the garage and it surprised me. Surely they'd try to stop us getting away easy? I walked steadily up to him, knowing the snow was making it difficult for him to see me properly. I stopped just within shooting range and whistled at him.
"Hey!" He started forward and I rolled back on my heels with a smirk,
"Ever wondered what a snow angel looks like?"
He ignored me and started running at me. I sighed and sidestepped him, raising my left arm suddenly to knock him back. He stumbled and I twisted to elbow him in the face. He caught my arm though and punched my side hard. Somebody must have told them about that. You don't go straight for somebodys kidneys if you're fighting after all. Maybe it was the guy from the train, or the boy. Either way I was getting fed up with it being a weak spot. I felt my legs buckle with the pain. He laughed, holding me up by my wrist and arching his fist back to hit me. So much for the killer agent plan.
My face snapped to the left and I could taste blood. I looked up at him, at the mad gleam in his eyes as his hand stretched down for the pistol at his hip. I took a few quick breaths, trying to breathe the pain out so I could focus. My side twinged as my hand crept around my back and pulled out the last knife from my belt. It snagged on the leather and my shirt as I did and I tried to keep the angry twitch off my face while I checked he hadn't noticed. I shouldn't have worried. Like all guys he had a power complex when it came to killing something. He was still grinning idiotically while I fumbled with the knife.
"Such a shame to shoot such a pretty face," His heavy accent breathed over me and melted in the snow around me. Making me shiver. He sighed heavily then and moved his hand up, "But then pretty smiles don't pay"
He laughed to himself again and my eyes flicked from his face to the gun and back again, watching the barrel come about level with my head. His hand tightened on the metal. His finger brushed the trigger. In twenty seconds I'd be on the floor dead. If I did nothing that is.
The gun brushed my cheek as he pulled it back, and he was about to aim it at my face when I stabbed down. He yelled when the knife ripped through his boot into his foot and he let go of me to hop around on the spot screaming in pain. I stumbled down and crept back a little, eyes on his gun while I crouched ready. My head flashed with hundreds of fight or flight techniques while I waited for him to make a move. It scared me a little. I couldn't remember learning any of them. But I wasn't gonna question it. If it saved me I'd go with this stupid spy instinct. The guy made an angry growl and raised the gun, quickly pulling the trigger before aiming properly. I dived out the way and rolled to my feet on his left so I could lean up and punch him. He staggered and I kicked the gun away. He tried to punch me back but I ducked and pulled the knife free of his foot as I rolled away again, arching my wrist up to slash his arm while I uptighted myself again. He let out a choked cry and grabbed me again, punching my arm and kneeing me in the side so I fell against him. Christ it hurt! I was blinking back the tears while two of him swam in front of my eyes. He was smiling again. He was hurt and angry but he was smiling. Guess killing a spy was one for the books for him.
"You know what, I won't shoot you," I stared up at him and he laughed before throwing the gun away, "I beat you to death instead. Much more fun"
Thoughts of belle reached me as he yanked me up and pulled his fist up again. I was trying hard not to think about what might happen if I died here. But my dumb brain wouldn't let me escape it. I swallowed down the hurt and tried to focus on him, readying myself for the hit, readying myself to fight back. I was dizzy and weak but that wouldn't stop me from trying to save her. He arched his arm back wth a wicked smile. His hand tightened on my jacket. He knew it wouldn't take much to make me black out. And we both knew he was going to drag this out. He pretended to hit and laughed loudly when I flinched. I could feel the vague beginnings of a plan forming in my head while he took his time laughing at me. It was dumb and impossible but it might just work. If only I could focus on it. I shook my head to clear the dizziness but it bounced back worse. Maybe I was concussed. He laughed again. I must've looked really dazed.
"See you in heaven angel" he muttered pulling his fist back for the actual hit this time. I felt my body cringe away but his hand on my jacket kept me iin place. I eyed his fist and closed my eyes ready for it...
"Oi!"
We both looked up and a faint zipping sound managed to reach through the fog in my head before he fell to the ground dead beside me. I stared down at him, swallowing down the vomit that threatened to come up when I saw all the blood falling out of his head. I glanced up and noticed a slim figure coming towards me in the snow. I squinted at it, and then I rolled to my feet and stormed up to her.
Polly stumbled back when I shoved her away from me.
"Where the hell did you go?!" I yelled at her
"Shut up idiot!" I knocked her hands off me and pushed her back again
"Where did you go?!" I repeated fisting her jacket and holding her close. Polly actually looked scared as she eyed my raised fist . She nearly looked terrified. I would have been ashamed at myself, but I was too furious with her to care.
"Kel we don't have time-"
"Either you give me an answer right now or I swear I'll knock you into tomorrow!" I sounded absolutely furious. Every chord of my voice seemed to scream murder at her. But under it all there was a lot of pain. And fear. I thought I'd lost her.
Polly tried to pull me off her but my fingers simply tightened on her some more. She sighed and held her hands up
"I was trying to help you out. I was going to go ahead and get the chip myself"
"But?" I knew there was more to it than that.
Polly cringed inside my grip when I shook her for an answer and I suddenly remembered she was still severely injured. I loosened my hold a little and stepped away from her.
"You're a bloody idiot!," I snapped at her, "You have no idea what they're doing in there and you were just going to walk on in?!" She frowned at me
"What?," Her hand touched mine on her jacket and she looked me dead in the eye, "Kel what are they doing? What did you remember?"
I shook my head at her,. We didn't have time for this but it could be the only time if have to tell her. So I did.
"I tried to tell you before. But you wouldn't listen. You never listen"
"I'm listening now"
I peeked her sincere gaze and took a deep breath. I dropped my hands from her and rubbed my left forearm, scratching the fire out again. Her eyes followed the movement. She looked so confused.
"Kel-"
"There she is! Targets located west of the house"
The men were charging at us, some slipping in the snow to get to us. I groaned and told Polly to beat it while I stumbled back to the dead guard to retrieve his gun. She ignored me and raised her own
"I was trying to make it alright kel. You were right-" she cut off and we both ducked behind a tree when they started shoouting at us, "I shouldn't have asked you to ditch belle. And I shouldn't have thought she'd slow us down. But I had to. There was somebody I needed to talk to-"
"Who the hell was that important you had to leave us for dead for a chat?!"
Polly didn't answer. She shot one of the men charging us and I copied her. She caught my wrist as I reloaded and gave me a careful look before shooting another guard.
"Where's belle, kelly?" She asked glancing back at me while I killed another guy. It was funny, I didn't seem to give a damn about killing now Polly was back. It was like she was encouraging me. I glared at her question though.
"Why? Want to find her and send her home without telling me?" I was being immature, I knew that. But I was still very angry with her. My comment must have ticked her off because she pulled me back to face her. We both ducked a fresh wave of bullets and she glared at me.
"Grow the fuck up already! I didn't tell you because I knew you'd stop me!," I matched her glare and she reached out for my hand. I let her have it and she sighed, "You know I'd never leave you unless it was absolutely necessary" She glanced around the tree again and I shook my head at her
"You promised," Polly looked back at me then, "You said we'd figure this out," I tapped the gun against my head and she flinched, "but you were going to leave me to it"
"Kel I'm sorry. But I need to know, you have to tell me what they're-"
Screaming blocked out whatever she said. it was my name screamed at full volume. It echoed around us and made my blood turn cold. Polly paled in front of me and we both looked back at the house. I stood up to go but Polly yanked me back as more bullets shot our way. She forced me down and pressed some keys into my hand.
"Run" she whispered to me. I glanced down at them and she took the distraction as a cue to bolt it across the yard.
"Polly!" I screamed after her but she ignored me and kept running, ducking and dodging as the guards started shooting at her. One of them ran after her, about to leap in an attempt to tackle her. I didn't think. Just shot him. She barely glanced back when he fell down behind her, just kept running. It was amazing she made it to the house untouched.
"Split up and get them!" One of the men shouted and pointed at me then back at Polly.
I ducked behind the tree again, flinching every time a round of splints was chipped away from the wood my back rested against. Shooting echoed out of the house and I clenched the keys tightly in one hand, the gun in the other. I had no idea what Polly was playing at but she'd given me a way out. My eyes hit the logo on the keyring and I smiled, in shock and in amusement. I looked ahead at the garage. All I'd have to do was kick the door in and get in the car. Easy right? But Belle...
"C'mon jones!" I hated hesitating my every move. Old Kelly would have already been in the car by now. But then old Kelly probably didn't care about her friends.
"Gotchya!" I started and yanked the hand off my shoulder. I didn't think as I twisted it and pulled him forward into the tree. He yelled and I winced a little at how his arm was twisted the wrong way now. Guess I broke it. Like a lot.
The other blokes started shooting again so I smacked the guy into the tree to knock him out before crouching behind it again. I could feel the adrenaline pulsing inside me, could feel it make me want to move. I was smiling despite being scared. Because i was kinda liking this. I was liking the danger. I looked down at the keys again, then up at the garage door. I nodded to myself and started to move.
I edged around the tree and randomly shot at the men rushing me as they reloaded their guns. Shouting was coming from the house, snow was hitting me harder, lightning was flashing everywhere.
I ran.
Car key sat forgotten inside my pocket.
