This chapter takes place after "Those Eyes." The characters and elements I own are those I created for this story. Everything and everyone else belong to William Joyce and Dreamworks Animation.
Two rabbits sat together in front of the roaring fireplace, the warmth of which mixed with the heat preserved by the blanket draped around them.
Bunny could not stop staring down at his little Snowbunny. For so long, he honestly thought all of his people, his family, had perished in that massacre. Yet lo behold, here lay one of his own in his arms, snoozing away without a care in the world. The elder Pooka softly chuckled.
Even all grown-up his baby boy was adorable.
"Aw, what a Kodiak-worthy moment..."
The Easter Bunny stiffened but then relaxed and rolled his eyes once he recognized the familiar, snarky voice. Without even turning his head back, he growled, "Whadda ya want, Frostbite?"
Jack put up the hand not balancing the shepherd's crook over his shoulders up in mock defense as he sauntered over to the Pooka pair. "Hey, can't a guy admire his buddy's way with kids?"
"First off, Frost, Nathan ain't a kid anymore," Bunny retorted, finally looking back at the ice spirit, although he added in his mind, 'At least in body...' Shaking his head to keep Jack from catching on to his train of thought, he continued. "Second, the last thin' I need is ya causin' hell for my boy."
This time, Jack really did defend himself. "Whoa, chill, Cottontail! I know better than that—mostly. Besides, I wanna get to know Nat a little more, too."
Bunny cringed with slight guilt.
Jack got him there. In fact, he wasn't the only one curious to know more about their guest; the other Guardians wanted to know more about Nathan, too, particularly the ones who'd never met him before. Bunny nodded in understanding and cast a loving gaze on the young rabbit cradled and slumbering in his lap, no longer worried about Jack's presence. Mumbling in his sleep, Nathan nuzzled into his father's deep chest fur as a light sigh escaped his nostrils. The strong arms wrapped around him tightened more as their hands started to rub circles into his back, making the younger rabbit beam and coo in his sleep.
Even Jack had to admit that the sight of this was pretty cute. Unfortunately for the ice spirit, Bunny's patience with his hanging around him and his son already wore thin.
"Don't you have some otha' place ta be, Frost?"
With another smirk, Jack waved a finger at Bunny as if the senior Guardian were a naughty child who had just back-talked him. "Touchy as usual...Ya know I'm surprised someone as shy and easygoing as this guy's actually related to you."
For once in the winter sprite's current company, Bunny cracked a grin. "Don't be too surprised."
A sudden shift in weight caught Bunny's notice, as well as Jack's. The two Guardians looked back down just in time to see Nathan opening his eyes at them, the younger rabbit covering his yawning mouth with a forepaw. Bunny softly smiled at the young rabbit as he heartily tousled his mohawk. "It's 'bout time ya came back ta life."
Nathan blinked twice in confusion. When he spoke, his words came out slurred due to his grogginess. "Di' Ah miss anythin'?"
Bunny shook his head. "Nothin' much really—not that I'm surprised, sport...you still sleep like a bloody log."
"I haven't dozed off like that for years actually," Nat admitted as he rubbed his eyes clear of any lingering crust. Once he finished, he lay back against his father's side with a soft yet teasing smile. "Besides, it's not my fault your fur makes such a good pillow."
A valid argument, to say the least—back in the Lost Lands, feelings of security had always been scarce and short-lived ever since he ran away from Jezebel and the Queen. He either had to force himself to be a light-sleeper so that he'd be better able to defend himself (a difficult task) or go for days without sleep until he dropped in exhaustion (impractical and potentially dangerous). Here in the protection of his father's arms, however, slumber came as easily as the Sun comes to day. For once, Nathan no longer had to look over his shoulder to insure he would get a decent sleep.
Besides, his parent's fur was pretty darn toasty, even compared to the fire.
Bunny opened his mouth to toss a playful poke of his own except—
"Oh that's so adorable!"
Tooth popped her head out of the entrance to the rabbit family's shared room. Bunny slapped a forepaw to his forehead. 'Crikey, you gotta be kiddin' me.'
Nat, on the other hand, offered the fluttering Fairy Queen a charming, little smile, genuinely happy to have more company over, especially her. "Hello, Miss Toothiana!"
The Guardian of Memories giggled at the title. "Nathan, I already told you: you can just call me Tooth."
"Heh...of course..."
Well, at least these two were hitting it off pretty well. That's a good sign. Bunny remembered how much of a lost child Nathan acted back then. It was one of the reasons the kid ended up being bullied so much by the other kits. Thankfully, the opposite appeared to be happening here; Nathan was already making quick friends with Tooth and Bunny could tell that even Jack had already started to warm up to him, too, on account of the banter Bunny and the other adults overheard the boys having right after they all arrived at Santoff Claussen.
All of a sudden, Tooth lessened her smile a little and began wringing her hands out of shyness. Jack rolled his eyes, already knowing what the fairy had in mind. "Go on, Tooth, you know you wanna ask him."
"Right...um, Nathan, sweetie?"
The addressed lapine titled his head at her. "Yes, Tooth..."
"This is going to sound a little weird, but...would it be alright with you if I looked at your teeth?" She blurted the last part out at such a frantic pace that it sounded more like one large word. Nathan knitted his eyebrows together and looked to his father for interpretation.
"She wants ta know if she can look at yer teeth." After Nathan's look on him became blank and remained that way for a while, Bunny grew awkward. He still had to remember that this was still Nathan he was dealing with here, grown-up or not. He thought back to the boisterous ceremony North made earlier today right after Manny shone his light on the young rabbit and revealed him to be the last of the Guardians to join.
Rubbing the back of his head, Bunny cringed inside at how utterly baffled and even downright terrified Nathan became at the multitude of trumpets blowing right in his face and the fires being lit around him.
Fortunately, it had only taken one look at his face for North to change his mind and postpone the ceremony for the time being. And the bringer of Wonder was usually not the sort of person to rethink his plans...not unless he had a strong reason for doing so.
"I guess one peek won't hurt anyone."
That statement froze Bunny solid faster than any of Jack's magic ever could! He shot a look of shock at Nathan, wondering where all that shyness up and went. His son merely shrugged his shoulders at him before he turned to Tooth, who had already fluttered over to him and was trying her hardest not to squeal after Nathan opened his mouth nice and wide.
"Oh my...your teeth are just as white and shiny as Jack's!"
"Ah geez, don't tell me I've got competition."
Ignoring Jack's playful quip, Tooth pulled her fingers away from Nathan's mouth, putting her hands behind her back and giving the Pooka a bashful smile "I'm sorry about that. Obsessing over someone else's teeth sort of comes with the territory when you're the Tooth Fairy."
Nathan smiled with a blush. "Heh, I understand, and, uh... thanks for the compliment, Tooth."
"You're welcome."
No one said anything else for a while. Nathan shifted his eyes to the floor while Tooth did the same, bringing her hands back out front and fidgeting with them. Bunny and Jack secretly shared a look that said neither of them could take the silence that had overtaken the once cheerful atmosphere for much longer, so Jack sought to break the ice, so to speak.
"So, how about that ceremony?" he asked Nathan without a hitch, "You feeling comfortable enough to give it another chance, Stripes?"
"Frostbite..."
Nathan wrapped an arm around his father's waist, cutting the man's warning off. When Bunny turned to him in surprise again, wondering why he wanted his attention, Nathan nuzzled him in the shoulder. The young Pooka never pulled away, instead keeping his head on that shoulder and fixing a firm yet tender gaze on Bunny.
"No, Dad, it's okay. Everything was too much for me at first, but I'm ready now," he stood up from the floor and stuck his hand out for his father to take so he could help him up. "C'mon, let's go!"
For a few moments, Bunny only stared at the hand being offered to him...trailing his eyes from there to the warm, trusting expression...once again he kept seeing the little one he would carry like a precious treasure in those eyes...
He smiled.
His Snowbunny still had that same face, matched only by his heart.
'And how could I evah say no to that face?'
Hope you all enjoyed the fluff!
