A Falling Star
Chapter 21: The Final Wish
They were welcomed home as heroes. Kouki told Amira everything, while Akio focused trying not to blush at the parts where his rather embarrassing words were mentioned. Festivities and all day all night partying went on for the entire week.
When the final Sunday came, Amira was left looking up at the evening sun. Orange light spilled across the pale blue skies that began to darken into dust. The sun was just beginning to crest onto the horizon of the ocean stretching out as far as the eye can see.
"So," Amira sighed, looking out over the cliff edge with the sea of trees rustling with life below them. "As soon as the sun goes down, then you leave."
"Yeah, I suppose so." Akio muttered, emerging from the shrubbery.
"When the last day turns into night and the first stars shows, your gateway will open." Kouki recited. Thinking about the vacant thoughts left stranded in her head from the star king. He had whispered it to her in a way that she only remembered a day after the Star King said goodbye for a while.
"I see." Amira nodded, her eyes never straying from the golden sun. Kouki settled down next to Amira with Akio on the other side.
For a long while, they said nothing, looking out as the sun's light began to melt into the ocean. "I don't want to be alone." Amira finally whispered. Akio turned to look at Amira in surprise, but Kouki stayed with Amira's gaze at the sun. Instead of talking, she wrapped her hand around Amira's and squeezed.
"Alone? No. We'll never be alone Amira." Kouki finally replied. "We'll just be a little further apart is all, but a part of our soul will remain in that barrier and will protect your life from everything just like we would do."
Amira squeezed her eyes shut, gripping tightly to Kouki's hand. Akio looked at the pair, slipping his hand around Amira's other one. "She's right, Amira." Akio added reassuringly.
"I know that, idiot." Amira growled under the crack of her voice, straining to hold back her tears.
Sunlight began to dawn over their bodies, slipping off the edge of the mountain as the sun sunk lower into the vast blue ocean. Kouki's body leaned against Amira's shoulder, just as the tears came pouring down. Amira's arms swung around Kouki's small shoulders, pulling her into a tight hug. Tears raced down her cheeks into Kouki's clothes. She whipped a hand back, dragging Akio as close to her as possible. They hell onto each other as tight as they could, as the sun was finally dropping into darkness.
As dusk's darkness drew across their bodies, they turned into a faint, translucence, with their presence fading. And finally, the sun was gone. Darkness fell over the sky, and Akio and Kouki were no longer there. A small star glittered in the night sky, as Amira froze hopelessly in tears as the stars shone.
A bright light flickered below her, and as she looked down, Kouki's words repeated to her. 'We'll never be alone Amira,' as her fingers laced around the small little capsules on her lap. 'We'll just be a further apart is all.' Her dark eyes stared into the beautiful little stars.
"I love you." Amira whispered. "I love you so much."
Lucy felt the cold tears race down her face, staring at the woman on the ledge. Her transparent body stood still in the past, with an ache as terrifying as death itself. The pain of loneliness, the pain of grief, and the pain of regret all surged up inside of her like a storm.
"That was the last time we saw Amira." Akio commented, looking down at Amira's crying image.
"Back then I had no idea how much pain my words and actions would cost her." Kouki added, crouching down besides the girl, her hand inching to touch her. Hesitantly, she reached her hand towards Amira's small face. Her pale fingers slipped through her image, and a faint expression of shock skipped over her face but it turned into something soft and sad. Slowly, Kouki retracted her hand and the world fell into a white abyss again.
"Knowing all this, the effort we went through, our pain, our resolve. And knowing the pain of Amira who you met in the present," Kouki continued, standing up with Akio beside her in the grand white room. "Do you still have the resolve to consent to your wish?"
"I do." Lucy replied, unhesistantly. Despite the pain tearing through her chest, despite the heartache, despite the tears running down her face, the pain she just witness was nothing compared to the isolation Amira and the villagers were stuck in now.
"I see." Kouki replied, a small smile crowning her lips. "Then state your wish and it will be granted."
"I want you to..." Lucy chocked through the tears that wrapped itself around her throat. "to end it. I want you to end the spell."
"So be it." Kouki replied, walking forwards. "I will the end the spell, and in turn, end their lives."
She pressed a palm against Lucy chest, and suddenly, her fingers went right through. They dug deep into her soul within her materialised body. And then Lucy felt it.
It was like a small part of her hidden away was unlocked, and unleashed. Light roared from her chest, burning everything an ashen colour. All Lucy could see in the light, was the fain traces of a smile on Kouki's lips. "Thank you." She whispered.
And then the world sank. Lucy felt the light reaching deep through space and time, back to the roots of the island magic. In the village she felt the faint presence of the star. And a second later, she felt it shatter.
Figures burst into illumination around her. At first she didn't know who they were, but at a second glance she did. The pirates.
The feeling of falling quickly enveloped her, as she descended into a deep light, watching their spirits fade into the distance. "Thank you, Lucy." Amira's voice spoke in her ears, just as the light shut off, and Lucy fell into darkness.
"LUCY!" Natsu yelled, as the white light enveloped the world around him.
As soon as the star gate opened, Natsu felt the echoing dread of Lucy's presence disappearing. Just as it did, light began to burst across the sky like vines. It all collected and headed to one point; the village. When it hit, light exploded like an eruption leaving the rippling world and the magic to shatter around him.
Natsu couldn't help but turn to the unconscious bodies besides him, only to see them shatter like glass. In a second, they were gone. "AMIRA! JAMES!" Natsu shouted in disbelief, looking back and forth between their empty voids. And just like that, the light and everything else was gone.
Natsu turned, and saw Lucy standing on the mountain, looking over the night sky. The gate...was gone. The stars were destroyed. And even the land beneath them was flat. "LUCY!" Natsu cried in relief, running up to her.
Dark eyes hit her face and saw the pain clearly on it. She turned, collapsing into his chest. His arms immediately went around her, squeezing her in tightly. "I did it." Lucy whispered between her sobs. "It's all over now, they're finally free."
"Lucy," Natsu whispered, hugging her close.
Salt sea air brushed through her long blonde hair. Pink short spikes rustled as water gently rocked the ship across the calm waters. The faint smell of the ginger aroma soothes the dragon slayer's uneasy nose. "How many days has it been?" Natsu grumbled, raising an arm to block the sun.
"About a week." Lucy replied, soaking in the warm sun. "Be happy we even got off the island before it collapsed."
"That island! Breaking up like that so suddenly! We barely made it off!" Natsu grumbled irritatingly.
"The magic was suspending the island that was doomed to die in time. Once the magic was gone, time caught up and the island began to sink." Lucy explained. "Good thing, Amira helped us escape."
"I suppose we owe her our lives." Natsu chuckled ironically, picking up the folded piece of paper from the desk and reading it. 'I hope this ship will come in handy for you. I'm sure you'll make better use out of it than I ever did. Thanks, Amira, James, Kouki and Akio.' "Short and sweet." Natsu commented.
"Well, she was a practical woman." Lucy added.
"I still can't believe she gave us her boat. And how you met the star key and Knight Protector." Natsu grumbled. "I always miss out on the fun."
"Well, my star key magic's gone. It was returned when I made that wish." Lucy replied.
"It's a shame that the original star key's gift ended up as a curse." Natsu continued.
"I suppose something's you just have to let go." Lucy sighed, sitting up out of the chair on deck. She moved up to the edge of the deck, looking over the water. "At least they're all together again."
"Yeah," Natsu laughed, swinging his arm over Lucy's shoulder. Lucy's head rolled into his neck, breathing in the salty air. "We should get some ginger when we get home."
Lucy let out a small chuckle. "Yeah."
"NATSU! LUCY!" Voices suddenly belted out. Natsu and Lucy leapt apart, their eyes jumping to the opposite side of the deck. Over the sea, they saw the sailing ship waving the Fairy Tail flag ahead of them. Their friends stood on the bow with tears of joy and relief.
"Well this is going to be a difficult story to tell." Natsu sighed with a grin, running over to wave happily at them.
"It's not just a story," Lucy muttered to herself. "It's a legend. The legend of a little star that glowed, even in darkness."
