Caroline danced around the living room. Pizza boxes, take out containers and a bottle of really expensive whiskey sat on the table. Stefan smiled and leaned back into the couch. Klaus was changing the channels on tv.
"Why are people watching this stupid log being burned?" Klaus asked
"It's the yule log" Stefan answered
"It's bloody ridiculous!" Klaus said
The trio spent Christmas eating take out food and drinking. They laughed and talked about old times. They were all avoiding Christmas at the Lockwoods for different reasons. Stefan wanted to avoid Damon and Elena. Caroline wanted to avoid Tyler and Vickie. And Klaus, well Klaus just wanted to be with his friends, so he really didn't care. Plus he likes tacos.
Klaus reached into the take out containers and picked up another taco. Caroline was amazed at how much he could eat and not gain any weight. It seemed so unfair.
"How can you eat so much and not get fat?" Caroline asked
"I don't know?" Klaus answered
"Why do you like tacos so much?" Caroline asked
"I just do" Klaus answered
"Really?"
"It's one of the first foods I ate when I was with Elijah. He was a rubbish cook. He couldn't even make anything from a box. We ate out a lot. And tacos were easy to eat" Klaus said
"You always ate with your hands" Stefan said
"Yeah. I didn't know how to use utensils till later" Klaus said
Caroline picked up Klaus's glass and finished his drink. She shook her head as she felt the liquid burn down her throat.
"Don't know how you drink that" Caroline said
"Let's go to the treehouse" Klaus said
"What?!" Stefan said
"Why would you want to do that?" Caroline asked
"I feel nostalgic" Klaus said getting up
"That thing is barely holding up there" Stefan said
"Yeah" Caroline said
"If you're wondering where all the stuff went, we put it in the attic" Stefan said
"Well let's go see then!"
Klaus went outside and walked across the street. Stefan finished his drink and went after him. Caroline grabbed her jacket and followed. Klaus was already climbing up into the treehouse. Stefan climbed up and Caroline was behind him. They three sat inside the treehouse. It all seemed smaller.
"Now that we're in here, what are we doing?" Stefan asked
"The last time I was here, it fit all of us" Klaus said
"We were like 10" Caroline said
"Why did you guys abandon it?" Klaus asked
"We grew up" Caroline said
Stefan moved and suddenly the wood beneath him broke. His butt fell through the wood and he was stuck . His legs were pointing up and he was struggling to get out.
"Help me!" Stefan yelled
Caroline and Klaus started to laugh.
"Sorry" Caroline said as she tried to pull him out
"This was your idea!" Stefan yelled
Klaus moved and tried to pull Stefan out.
"You know we should just leave you here for Damon to find" Klaus said
"You wouldn't dare" Stefan said
Klaus pulled Stefan out of the hole. Stefan crawled over to the ladder.
"I'm totally leaving" Stefan said as he climbed down
Klaus looked out the window and watched Stefan walk back to Caroline's house. He looked back and saw Caroline looking around. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a small box.
"I got you something" Klaus said
"It's too big to be a surfboard" Caroline said
Klaus handed the small jewelry box to her.
"I hope you like it" Klaus said
Caroline opened the jewelry box and gasped. It was her snowflake necklace. But Klaus had it repaired. The crystals that were missing were replaced as well as the chain.
"It's beautiful" Caroline said
"Merry Christmas"
"I didn't get you anything, I mean, it's not as nice as this"
"It's alright love, you gave me the greatest thing of all"
Klaus moved closer to her and leaned in to kiss her. His knee fell through the wood and Caroline laughed.
"Maybe we should go back" Caroline said
"Agreed"
"I'm leaving" Stefan said
"Where are you going?" Caroline asked
"Anywhere but here, I'm going to spend New Year's Eve some place else. Anywhere but here. Maybe I'll go back to New York" Stefan said
"That's so tacky" Caroline said
"Fine, maybe I'll go across the pond to London" Stefan said
"I like that idea" Klaus said
"Don't encourage him" Caroline scolded
"I'm leaving, who's coming with me?" Stefan asked
"you can't avoid them forever" Caroline said
"Says the girl who doesn't want to deal with whatever is going on with you two. I don't want to be a third wheel, I hate that, so I'm leaving" Stefan said
"There's nothing-" Caroline started to say
"Yeah ok, whatever. I'm not sticking around for this. I'm leaving, see you guys next year" Stefan said
"So are we going after him?" Klaus asked
"Yes, of course we are"
"I hear London is quite nice this time of year"
"I've never been. I've never been anywhere really"
"Then you'll love it"
Caroline was at the hospital looking for her mother. Her mother was there asking questions to a suspect. Stefan hated hospitals so he waited in the car. Klaus followed her in, watching her talk to her mother. He looked around and remembered the last time he was there. They were children again and always getting into trouble.
Stefan laid in the hospital bed and looked around. His room was filled with balloons and get well cards. He had his tonsils removed so he couldn't talk but he could eat as much ice cream as he wanted. Klaus and Caroline came to visit him. Damon was always there, playing with his toys.
"Are you feeling better Stefan?" Caroline asked
Stefan nodded and smiled.
"Good, we miss playing with you" Caroline said
"So get better" Klaus said
Damon was playing with Stefan's toys. He saw Stefan looking at him so he gave him the plane. He knocked over the ball and it rolled out.
"I'll get it" Klaus said
Klaus followed the ball and grabbed it and picked it up. He noticed he was standing in front of a room with an open door. He looked inside and he saw a girl about his age, putting tape on the windows. He walked inside.
The girl was trying to spell out something in the window. She was wearing a hospital gown and had a scarf wrapped around her head.
"Hey" Klaus said
The girl turned around and saw him.
"Hi" the girl answered going back to the window
"What are you doing?" Klaus asked
"Writing a message"
"For what?"
"Pizza"
"Pizza?"
"I've been in here forever, I hate the food. I just want pizza, and they won't let me have any"
"That's stupid, I'll help you"
"Where you get that ball from?"
"My friend, he's a few rooms down, he gets to eat ice cream"
"He's lucky"
Klaus moved the chair closer to the window and the girl stood on it and taped out the words pizza rm 503
"I'm Anna"
"I'm Nik"
"Can I play with the ball?"
"Sure, don't you have any toys?"
"Not really, my mommy won't get me any new ones, since the old ones broke"
"How long have you been here?"
"A really long time"
"Nik?" Caroline called out
"In here Caroline" Klaus said
Caroline walked in and saw Klaus talking to Anna.
"What are you doing?" Caroline asked
"This is Anna, she's been here a while. I was helping her with her sign for pizza" Klaus said
"Pizza?" Caroline asked
"Yeah, she's been here so long she hasn't had pizza in forever" Klaus said
"Let's bring her some, we're suppose to visit Stefan again tomorrow, I'll ask my mommy to bring some" Caroline said
"I'll asked Lijah too" Klaus said
"Thanks" Anna said
The next day Klaus asked Elijah to bring some pizza for Stefan. Elijah of course complied and Klaus happily came back to the hospital. He went to see Stefan who was still eating ice cream. Damon was there hitting a balloon.
"Pizza!" Damon yelled
Stefan frowned and shook his head.
"it's not for you, it's for Anna" Klaus said
"Who's Anna?" Damon asked
"She's the girl a few rooms down" Klaus said
Damon and Stefan looked at Klaus confused.
"I'll be right back. She hasn't had pizza in a really long time" Klaus said
Klaus took the pizza box and went to Anna's room. She was sitting on her bed alone when Klaus walked in.
"Hi" Klaus said
"You're back" Anna said
"Yes, I have pizza, here" Klaus said as he put on the bed in front of her
Anna opened the box and squealed in delight when she saw it.
"It's been so long since I've had pizza!" Anna said
"Well here's a whole pie" Klaus said
"Thank you"
Anna took out a slice and started eating it.
"Do you want a slice?" Anna asked
"No, I don't like pizza that much. I used to eat it all the time. I got sick of it" Klaus said
Caroline walked into the room holding her pink bag.
"You need napkins" Caroline said taking them out of her bag
She sat on the bed with Klaus and Anna while she ate her pizza.
"How long have you been in here?" Caroline asked
"Since before my hair fell out" Anna said
"What?" Caroline asked
Anna finished her pizza and wiped her hands with the napkin. She untied her scarf and showed them she was bald.
"They make me go to radiology every week, it's cause I'm sick, they say I'm getting better but it makes my hair fall out" Anna said
"Will it grow back?" Caroline asked
"They say it will, I don't know" Anna said putting the scarf back on her head
"Have another slice" Klaus said
"You have really pretty hair" Anna said
"Thanks" Caroline said
"It's so long and pretty. I wish mine was like that. My hair's black" Anna said
"I'm sure it was long and pretty too" Klaus said
"Thank you for the pizza" Anna said
Damon showed up the next day in Anna's room. They talked for a bit but he had to go back to Stefan's room to make sure he was ok and not lonely. Damon left a get well balloon in Anna's room. She smiled and looked at it.
Klaus came back the next day with more pizza. Caroline showed up with her dolls and make up kit. Make up for kids and perfume for kids. She put some on Anna. She even gave Anna a small plastic tiara so her scarf was decorated.
The kids kept coming to visit Anna until one day her bed was empty. They stood there looking around her empty room. Caroline reached out for Klaus's hand and she squeezed it a bit tighter.
"Where's Anna?" Klaus asked
"what are you kids doing in here? You're not allowed to be in here" the nurse said
"Where's Anna?" Caroline asked
"Oh, she's not here anymore" the nurse said
"Where is she? She's waiting for us" Klaus said
"You should talk to her mother. Anna's not here anymore" the nurse said
"Where did she go?" Klaus asked
"Where's her stuff?" Damon asked
"I wanted to meet her" Stefan yelled
"I do not do well with kids" the nurse said as she left
The kids walked out into the hallway and looked around. They saw the nurse talking to a woman who looked over at the kids. The woman walked over to the kids who were standing there, holding pizza, and toys, and other things.
"I'm Pearl, Anna's mom" Pearl said
"Where is she?" Caroline asked
"Anna was very sick. She didn't make it. She died last night" Pearl said
"No! She didn't! She was getting better" Caroline screamed
"She said she was very happy that she met you all. I thought she had made you all up" Pearl said
"This is stupid!" Damon said running off
"Damon!" Stefan chased after him
Klaus pulled on Caroline's hand and the two of them ran off.
Klaus shook his head out of that memory and saw Caroline walking towards him.
"So I told my mom I was leaving early, she's busy working not that she would notice" Caroline said
"So you're ready?" Klaus asked
"Yeah"
"Stefan's in the car, he hates hospitals"
"I know, let's go"
Caroline looked out at the lights of London. They were at a New Years Eve party with a great view of the city. Stefan was drinking with Klaus while she looked out. Klaus walked over to with a drink in his hand.
"Enjoying the view love?" Klaus asked
"It's really beautiful here" Caroline said
Klaus looked down and saw she was wearing the snowflake necklace.
"Caroline, you know how I feel about you. You know that I want you, what else do you need?"
"I don't want to talk about this now"
"Why not? When are we ever going to talk about this?"
"what do you want me to say?"
"I want you to say that you're happy, that you're happy with me"
"I am"
"Then why do you pull away from me?"
"Because I don't know if you're really here, if you're really staying this time"
"I'm here, and I'm not going anywhere until you say you're tired of me, just stop pushing me away. Don't you get it? It's always been you, it will always be you. I've loved you my entire life. What else do you need from me?"
Caroline took his drink from his hand and finished it and handed it back to him. She then grabbed his face and kissed him. His arms wrapped around her as he kissed her back.
"It's not time for that yet love" Klaus said
"We'll just practice until then" Caroline said
Stefan watched from the bar and finished his drink and ordered another one. He heard the countdown start and then the balloons and streamers came down. People cheered and everyone was kissing everyone. A woman grabbed Stefan and kissed him.
"Happy New Year Caroline"
"Happy New Year Nik"
