Chapter 21
Heart Beats
*Sam*
I arrive back at Silas's house around late afternoon to find it the same as when I left. I don't waste any time and hurry to his bedroom to look for more evidence. The figurine is still scattered on the floor just like before. When I look up my heart practically skips a beat. Silas's bed is unmade and sheets hanging off the sides of it. I begin talking to myself again. "It doesn't mean anything Sam. Even I leave my bed unmade sometimes." I begin searching around for more clues.
I open the top drawer on the nightstand next to the bed hoping to find something. Sifting through it I find spare change, a flashlight, a few bills, and an open box. I pick it up and realize it's a box of condoms. "Just more circumstantial evidence. It's not uncommon." Gently I place everything back where I found it and continue my quest. Nothing else seems to pop out at me. In last measure I get on my hands and knees to make sure I didn't miss anything. Same result.
"See Sam? Nothing here that could prove Ava's theory. How could I have thought for a second that Silas could have been…" I cut myself off when I notice something shiny under the bed. I slowly reach my hand under to grab it. When I pull it back, I almost lose myself. In my hand I hold a silver charm bracelet, killing all of my hopes of Ava being wrong. "It all makes sense. The nail polish, the bed, the bracelet… and even the two beers sitting on the side of the sink….. I should have known."
A tear floods down my cheek as I hurry out of the room clutching the bracelet in my hand. "Silas Clay you sick cheating son of a bitch!"
