The Flames of Emotion

It was wet and cold and windy. Meeya stood up as tall as she could as the waves crashed into her, the sun beat down on the back of her neck. Her hair had been tied up that morning and had manged to stay that way. She was turning red from the sun but was far from warm. A shiver went through her spine as a wave drenched her. Ferociously she attacked the water, trying to let her fire burn the water. Nothing had changed since then, nothing really ever changes.

"You'll never going to get it right if you think like that." Warned the dark red scaled dragon. His voice was low and rumbled the earth, it sent vibrations through her small chest. She loved his voice more than anything, it made her feel safe and protected.

"Igneel, there's no way, fire can't burn water, It can't survive under water!" A little girl with brown hair and green eyes stood in a river, she was shivering uncontrollably and wanted very much to get out.

"Try it again, you're not allowed to get out before you succeed."

Now the girl was angry, the sort of rebellious anger that burns inside us and makes us want to scream "that's not fair". Igneel could see it in her eyes and watched as she clenched her little fists. She closed her eyes and tried to calm down a bit, and after some deep breaths she opened her eyes.

"Don't hold in your anger Meeya, or it will burn inside you, and hurt you, let it out."

The girl took a deep breath, trying to unleash all of her anger. But it wasn't working. Igneel sighed sadly.

"It's alright Meeya, the flames of emotion are an incredibly rare gift. We'll start different lessons tomorrow."

Igneel walked away, Meeya watched as he disappeared into the forest. She felt so lonely out here by herself. She was sad, so unbearably sad. She fell to her knees and started to cry. She started to think about what Igneel had said. It was a rare gift. He had given up on her, just like Iganda had. She really was worthless wasn't she. She felt it, the rage growing inside of her. More rage then a girl of 5 should ever have. She tilted her head back and screamed. But it didn't come out as a scream, no, it came out as a roar. Fire started to cover the green trees that grew around them, and the lake itself lit on fire. The water became fire and burned. Igneel came right away, and saw what his pupil had done, at first he was proud, she had let out the inner rage that she was holding inside herself. She was going to be an amazing mage once she learned to control her temper. But he smelt something Salty. They were by a fresh water lake, what was that smell? And then he saw it, on Meeya's cheeks, were tears. Her flames weren't ones of rage, they were of sadness. He walked through the fire and stood in front of his pupil.

"I'm sorry," He whispered to her, "I'm sorry I walked away Meeya. I love you and I promise I will never just give up on you." He walked closer, bringing the girls small frame close to his with his tail.

"I'll get rid of your sadness." Igneel put out the fire around them and carried Meeya home.

She had always been envious of Natsu for many reasons, but one of them was his flames, he could unleash them whenever he wanted, flames of anger, but for her, her flames brought pain to everyone, even herself. They hurt her more than her enemies, they hurt the people she loved most.

The ground was on fire, the world around her was burning and people were screaming, running. But it felt like an entirely different world to Meeya. The world she was in was full of pain, uncontrollable pain. It was dark and made of sadness, all she could feel was her tears, and she couldn't help but notice how good it felt to wallow in them. The feeling of self-pity was addictive after you get used to it. She wanted to be sad, because how could she feel anything else? It was all she could feel.

The village burned around her but she didn't look up, the longer she cried the higher the flames rose. That night there weren't any survivors, and by morning the town was ash.

She might as well face it, she was alone, she was weak. The only way for her to save the people she loved, was to disappear all together. She caused more harm the help, if she wanted to be strong, she had to be sad, she wasn't helping anyone. She wanted to die.

The magic council had attacked, they had never really liked the village but hiding a fugitive gave them an excuse. No matter how you looked at it, it was Meeya's fault. Her friends her family, Markus, she had done this to them. She sat there curled up in a tight little ball hiding behind one of the buildings. She could hear the screaming, the crying, the running. Nothing ever changes, nothing really ever changes. It was still her fault.

"Meeya!" Someone was yelling her name but she didn't look up. "Meeya!" It was Markus, it was her hero, he was coming to save her.

"Where are you going kid?!"

She heard a crack, she heard a cry of pain. No nothing changes, she would still have to be sad or be weak. Tears rolled down her cheeks she stood up slowly and walked towards the men. Markus was clutching his arm, gritting his teeth. The men were laughing.

"Well girly, finally showing up? It's about time, we could have avoided all of this if you had just surrendered."

"Meeya?" Markus whispered. He always knew when she was upset, he always knew when she was faking a smile, or pushing away her own thoughts. But she would always lie, tell him it was fine. She was done with lying. She wasn't fine, she had never been fine. She felt the fire, it burned around her, spreading. She heard the crackling, she smelt the smoke, she could taste it in her mouth, the flavour of the ash.

"Meeya!" The men had run away but Markus was still there, Markus was always there. But he was in the flames, he was burning, he was going to die. Meeya started to weep again, she couldn't do it, she just hurt him more. The flames kept getting higher, but Markus pushed through them, they didn't hurt, they were warm, he always loved her flames. He held Meeya in his arms; he held her close and didn't let her go.

"Everything changes Meeya, people get older, things die, and things are born, friends move away, new ones come. But I will never leave you, I will never stop believing in you, and I will never stop holding you. I need you, so your never allowed to leave me either alright. Everything changes, but nothing really changes at all."

Meeya's flames kept burning

" If I could I'd take your sadness, I'd take all of it and leave none of it for you. I know when you fake a smile, when you say you're fine and you walk away to cry. But you are strong, kind, beautiful, and amazing. Never change Meeya."

Meeya didn't stop crying, but the flames stopped. She looked up in amazement, Markus had stopped the flames.

"You never need to be sad Meeya."

Meeya smiled happily. She felt her fire burning from her fingertips. She laughed happily as the warmth spread over the water.

"You never need to be sad Meeya."

She always remembered what his voice sounded like and what it felt like to be in his arms.

"I'm not sad Markus, look at my smile. I'm happy!"
