Quinn laughed at Sadie who had run up to her and had hopped on the park bench and was currently sniffing at her jacket trying to find out where she hid the treats. The last few weeks had been net positives in her life. Charlie had been released from the hospital, and Santana had dragged her back to New York. Frannie had been forced to introduce Joe to their mother, much to her eternal delight. From what she had heard from her mother, he was a dreadlock wearing hippy.
And more importantly, she was a paragraph away from ending her book and closing this chapter in her life. It had taken her more time than she would have personally liked, but she was finally nearly done. And more importantly Rachel was doing well.
"Fine, fine," Quinn said as Rachel jogged up to her a small smile on her features, as she pulls out the dog treats, she had brought and tosses one a bit causing Sadie to leap off the bench and run after it, giving Rachel some space to sit down. "You look good," Quinn says with a smile. "Happy."
Rachel bit her lip and watched as Sadie ran back up to Quinn nearly jumping on her, she loved the blonde more than anyone. It was probably because Quinn gave her plenty of treats. "I—started the divorce proceedings with Finn. Santana sent me a list of really good of lawyers, but it's not like we had a lot of money. A lot of debt, but not a lot of money."
Quinn nods she wasn't sure if she had heard that Finn had taken a plea deal for a felony and would be getting seven years for his assault on Charlie. She personally wanted them to throw the book at him, but Santana was due any week now and Charlie wanted nothing to do with Lima. It would keep Finn away from Rachel for a long time. "Are you thinking of pressing charges?"
Rachel hesitated and shook her head, many people who she had thought were her friends were taking Finn's side. Mr. Schue, Kurt, both insisted that she was exaggerating and a drama queen. "No, I just want to put this behind me. I think my father wants me too, but I don't want to face him again. I don't think I can."
Quinn tossed another treat for Sadie and squeezes Rachel's hand gently, "Okay, but if you change your mind you know I'll be there for you." Quinn smiles and leans back enjoying the summer air, letting the gentle breeze wash over them. She enjoys the moment with Rachel, her hand still on hers for a moment before she looks at Sadie who had come back and was looking at her expectantly. "Santana's due in a couple of weeks," she says after a moment. "It's going to be all hands-on deck soon."
Rachel freezes for a moment, the idea of Quinn heading back to New York— "Have they decided on a name?"
"Bacon Fabray-Lopez," Quinn said with a sigh. "Charlie's been adamant since she found out that Santana and I had a moment years ago. Santana's given in because I think she thinks Charlie will leave her if she doesn't agree or something. I think it's pregnancy hormones and Charlie being annoyed at her when that rarely happens," Quinn explains.
"Bacon?" Rachel asks it did sound like something like Charlie would think off, she can't help but laugh at the ridiculousness. "She's not serious, is she?"
"I'd like to think that my sister is just fucking with Santana, and will change her mind later. But it's Charlie, so we can only hope," Quinn smiles a bit. She hesitates for a moment unsure of how to tell Rachel the important part of her announcement, she had hoped that easing her into it would be the correct way to go about it but she wasn't certain. "The book is almost done; I've got a paragraph left."
"I didn't think you'd be coming back to Lima Ohio, after your niece was born. You'd probably be worried about them being able to keep the baby alive," Rachel said trying and failing to smile. She had known this was coming, her fathers had prepared her for it, her therapist had prepared her for it, but it still hurt, even if she understood. She would never come back to Lima if she could help it.
"Rachel, we'll keep in touch. You're far too important to me for me to just go back to New York and never see you again. I mean you can come up and visit—if you want," Quinn adds after a moment. "Is that something you'll want to do? Come visit me and everybody up in New York?" Quinn asks.
Rachel hesitates, she'd always wanted to live in New York, but years of being denied, of never amounting to much of wasting her life in Lima, it felt like those days were behind her. She wasn't sure if she wanted to go to a city that she would probably never make it in. "I'm not sure," she admits, searching Quinn's face for any sign of judgement.
Quinn waits for a moment but she doesn't deflate, "Then I'll just come back to visit Lima," she says simply. "I mean the book is nearly done, I plan to take a little breather and get into writing my next book. Or start looking into writing screenplays, I can do that anywhere."
Rachel blinked, "You don't have to do that for me—"
"You're important to me Rachel, so I don't mind. And I honestly think Sadie will miss me if I never come back, isn't that right?" Quinn said as she scratched behind Sadie's ears. "I didn't mind my time in Lima, even if the rest of my family never wants to come back. And if you ever want to come to New York, well my place does allow pets."
Rachel is quiet for a moment, "When do you leave?"
"Whenever I finish my book," Rachel gives her a look and she sighs. "The last day of the month," Quinn is quiet for a moment before she licks her lips. "So, you know, Charlie is an upcomer in the modeling industry, she hates dealing with models in general, but she's getting noticed, I mean Santana was bragging about how Vanity Fair wanted her but Charlie had to turn them down. So, I mean if you ever want to come to New York and have that career that you wanted, you do have some connections."
"Is she really that good?" Rachel asked surprise.
Quinn shrugged. "Pictures look like pictures to me, I really don't see how her photos are any different from an Instagram photo, with a filter."
Rachel smiled, "She probably gets offended that you can't tell the difference."
Quinn pulled out her phone and typed something in really quick before handing it over to Rachel, "Her online portfolio, it's some of her more well-known pieces. She does some more artistic stuff as well, and she does do you know headshots and things that help pay the bills."
"Quinn I could never—" she wanted to say afford it, let alone ask for something like that.
"Rachel, my sister is about to embark on the journey of parenthood, with a crying screaming devil of a baby. Exchange her services for free babysitting, meet with a few of her people. Part of getting famous is knowing people and if I do become a screenwriter then you'll know someone else in the industry who will support you, and help you. And I mean Santana and Frannie are kick ass lawyers and they know agents, I think. So, your time hasn't passed. I mean you're still young, and there are plenty of actors who didn't make it big until they were in their 30s or 40s. I know it's scary right now, but I don't think you should give up your dreams, unless you have something else you really want to do?"
Rachel swallowed, she had always wanted to be a star but years of Finn mocking her dream and belittling her—it had taken its toll and she had choked, when it had mattered, she had choked. "I'm scared." It's a lot to admit especially now. "What if Finn was right? I mean when I had my chance, my opportunity, I blew it—what if I'm not as good as I think I am?"
Quinn squeezes Rachel's hand as Sadie, as if sensing Rachel's change in mood lets out a small whine and nuzzles Rachel gently. There's a lot of things that she wants to say, mostly beginning with how Finn is a monster but she doesn't say that. "It's your choice Rachel, I don't want to pressure you into doing anything that you don't want to do. But I need you to know that if you do it, then I have faith in you and I will support you any way that I can."
