Chapter 21- One way to make a dog demon angry

Rin.

How could one human have such an effect on me?

The moment I laid eyes on her, the moment I smelled her sweet aroma, I knew she was my forever.

I was once the most feared creature in Japan. Five hundred years ago, humans and demon cringed and shivered at the sight of me. In their heads, they knew I could slaughter them all. In one sweep of my hand, they would be dust. I reveled in my power and killed everyone in my path. My goal was simple, defeat the strongest demons around and become the most powerful demon alive. I had reached this goal long ago when I was given my sword, Bakusagia.

I have watched empires fall, landscape change, and countless human battles take place. Intentionally nothing of the sort has interest me. I never understood mortals. They were so weak, so disgusting. The way they lived, acted, they were nothing but insects in my eyes. Their aging was quick. Time was an enemy of theirs and yet they didn't seem to care. They didn't fight back. What was their purpose on this planet? Why were they populating the lands if they were only here to die in the end?

As years passed, I found my father in love with one of these creatures. I never understood it at first. I was young, naïve. It wasn't until he told me that this human woman was his intended mate that I knew it could not be stopped. No demon can ever choose a mate, its fates decision that leads it to them. That's why, when I found out mine was a human girl no more than twelve years, when I realized how much my father's words meant to me. The urge of wanting to protect this human girl without her notice was difficult enough, when I decided it was time to show myself, to begin to court her at age seventeen; I could help but show my love to her.

It was illegal, taboo. It wasn't right. I had meant to only protect her, and only come closer to her until the end of her senior year when I would confess my love her to and mate with her officially. I never wanted it to go this far.

I knew I made a terrible mistake when I first kissed her in her bedroom. She had thought of it as nothing but a dream, however to me it was real. I let myself go and let the beast out. I couldn't hold it in any longer. I was weak in the head. But the feeling of her lips against mine was undeniably amazing. Her scent, fresh grass and lilac, mixed with mine overwhelmed my senses. I had to fight not to claim her there.

But then I kissed her again, and that night was when I marked her as mine.

I marked her fully, making me feel her emotions and pain. I wouldn't feel it physically, only mentally. If she was hurt, I would know, and I would be there to comfort her immediately. Such was the job of having a mate.

How could I have known I would soon fail my job and almost loose her completely?

I should've seen the signs. The alien smell of the math teacher, Naraku Onigumo, inside the school. He looked so familiar. I was blinded.

When I had heard about her staying after school with him, jealousy ran through my veins. I couldn't believe for a moment, I Sesshomaru, was jealous! Rediculous. I knew Rin would never betray me. I would feel it if she did. But I didn't like the idea of her staying with him after school, even though it was nothing more than an innocent aid. Still, I should've seen the signs.

I had left after school around three to begin my errands. I had planned for Rin and I to get away for the weekend. She needed a break from her insane life and I, being her mate, wanted to give her the gift of freedom for a few days. Since our child would be brought into this world in less than six weeks I wanted to give her a small gift of appreciation. And if that gift included a two night stay at a five star hotel in Hawaii, then let it be.

It was around that time when I felt something jerk in my heart. I froze, curious to know what was happening. I knew it was Rin who was causing me this feeling. However the feeling was mixed senses. It was anger, confusion, fear; could something have happened to her at the clinic? A part of me wanted to rush over there, demanding what was wrong. Then another part urged me to go to her house, perhaps she had returned from the doctors and was crying in her room. That's when my mind thought of the worst possibility, did something happen to our child?

I left the travel agency immediately after, forgetting about my car and flying over to her house. I landed minutes later, it was past 4 o'clock, and inside I could distinctively smell the juicy aroma of meat cooking inside. I open the door and rush into the kitchen to find Rin's mother and brothers helping with dinner. The five year old twins playing with their cars on the floor while Jun help his mother stir something in a large pot. Rin's mother turned, confused of my arrival.

"Sesshomaru, why are you here so early?" she asked.

I sniffed around, only catching the scent of those in the kitchen and dinner. "Rin isn't here." This wasn't a question, but an observation.

"She's at her doctor's appointment right now. She should be on her way home soon though," she smiled.

The feeling was still evident in my chest and head. I narrowed my eyes slightly. "Something isn't right."

She frowned. "What do you mean?"

"I feel…as though Rin is…hurt."

"Hurt?"

I nodded.

"Well," she began, "she's probably just hormonal. One can be as such when they see their child on a monitor. Don't worry; you are probably just feeling her mixed emotions."

I believed her. After all, over the past few months I've been feeling such emotions radiating off of Rin. It was the same thing. Still, I couldn't help but feel off.

It wasn't until I felt it, the sharpness of the colour black, when I knew Rin wasn't just hormonal. She was in trouble.

Immediately I pulled out my cell, dialing her number. Usually, 99% of the time she would pick up, but this time, her voice mail answered, "Ichiro give me back my phone…hey you've reach Rin…Ichiro stop! Please leave a short message and I'll get back to you as quickly as I can! Ichiro I'm going to kill you!," her musical tone making me more anxious.

"Sesshomaru?"

I turned to see Rin's mother with a worried expression written on her face. "Can you tell me if there is anyone besides me where Rin would go to for help?" I demanded.

She blinked. "Well there's Ayame, but…what's wrong? Is Rin okay?"

"I don't know. Do you have Ayame's number?"

She nodded, grabbing the cell phone number off the fridge.

I grew impatient waiting for the wolf to answer; all it did was ring and ring. "Hello?"

"Ms. Mari, this is Mr. Takahashi."

"Uh, Mr. Takahashi, not to be rude or anything but why are you calling my cell?" she questioned.

"Rin is missing," I said.

"What?"

"Is she there?"

Panic started to set into her voice quickly. "No, I…uh…I don't know where she is. Mr. Takahashi, is she alright?"

"I don't know. I'm going to look for her."

"I'll be right over."

Hanging up and faced Rin's worried mother who was at the brink of tears. "Where's my baby?" she sobbed.

Then I noticed something else. Rin's sister was missing as well. "Where is Rin's sister?"

"She's at her boyfriends."

That's when a red flag alarmed me. Rin had been kidnapped.

"Sesshomaru, where is Rin?"

"I'll find her. Call the police in the meantime. I feel as though we'll need backup."

"You know who took her?"

I narrowed my eyes, feeling my blood boil in rage. "I have a hunch."

xXx

I sore throughout the sky, sniffing around. It didn't help when the wrenching blizzard arrived, blocking her scent. I stopped and stood in the middle of a deserted road, trying to catch anything. Closing my eyes I concentrated hard on her, focusing all my attention on her whereabouts. Then I got it. It was faint, but a small fraction of her blood flew through the air from the passing wind.

As much as I was thankful, I was furious. The beast inside me urged to escape. Whoever had caused Rin to bleed was sure to get destroyed by my hands. Red filled my eyes, as a fierce snarl escaped my breath. Fangs extracted. Wind blew harder.

Then I ran. Nothing but a blur in a human's eyes, I followed her blood, stopping in the middle of the road once again. The scent…had disappeared. I growled low, knowing someone or something had blocked her scent from my direction.

That's when I spotted the interference. A dark shadow looming in the white abyss slowly moved towards me, his chuckling even darker. From his laugh I immediately recognize the owner. I was in no mood for games.

As he came into view, his bright red eyes flashed through the dimming light. "Hello Lord Sesshomaru, I realize you are currently in the mercy of your primitive biological urges to save your mate. But, as you have an entire lifetime of poor decisions ahead of you, may I interrupt this one?"

I ignored him. "Naraku, I suggest you move before I kill you."

"Rin cannot be saved," he said.

"What do you mean?"

He grinned. "As I have told you before, you are making a poor decision to save her. She is, from what I've heard, already in the midst of dying."

"No!"

He laughed deeply, making me only angrier. "How does it feel, Sesshomaru, to know that you cannot save her a second time, or your child for that matter? Such a shame."

"Damn you fool!" I yelled, revealing my poison whip from my poisonous claws to attack him, mentally regretting not having Bakusagia on hand. At a time like this, the sword would be very useful. "No matter," I muttered, "I shall destroy you where you stand!"

The whip flew around Naraku's body, disintegrating his flesh. He smirked as I watched his body disappear. I cursed, knowing that it was only a puppet I was seeing. Naraku was still alive, hiding in the heavy snow.

Slowly, the sky turned dark; still my sight prevailed. Naraku was wrong if he could stop me so easily. But where was he?

Then a heavy smell overwhelmed my senses. I cringed mentally, turning behind me to see purple fog surrounding the area. This was why nobody had come besides me. Naraku had put up a barrier so nobody could reach the area.

"Lord Sesshomaru," his voice echoed through the darkened storm, "I am pleased you are still standing to fight and that you have such motivation to rescue your beloved human. However, time is running out. I would recommend you leave or fear my toxic poisons might kill you where you stand."

"You are a fool to believe your ridiculous poisons would affect me, Naraku," I smiled. "Don't take me as a weakling."

"Never, Lord Sesshomaru," he emerged from the shadows, dressing in white fur, "I know your reputation. I know what you've done in the past, and I admire your actions. However, my miasma isn't the nicest of poisons and can affect even you."

He was wrong. I knew miasma well and I knew that I was not affected by it at the slightest. "Very well, Naraku."

Closing my eyes I focused on my inner demon, my true self. He wanted a fight? He was going to get a fight. It was time to unleash my true form.

I've kept this form from a lot of people. Last time I used this form was two hundred some odd years ago. Since then it has been dormant, locked inside for a special use. Rin had no idea and I knew she would be shocked to find out who I really was.

I felt my transformation occur, my vision clouding with red. My limbs extending, bones breaking and cracking to fit my larger form, and my insides moving, growing larger. Intense burning. My demonic energy coming together, swirling around myself like a twister. Then I shot out like lightning in a dark cloud, blowing away the snow with my power.

I could see from the way Naraku looked that he underestimated my power. He has heard of my stories yes, but he never knew what kind of power I held. My true power.

I knew I had to work quickly. From what Naraku had told me, Rin's time was running out. How long she had was a mystery. I started to swing my paw in his direction, trying to hit him off course and make him distracted. If I could do that, there would be a chance miasma would clear and the barrier would disappear. Toxic venom escaped my mouth, leaving poisonous gas in the wake. Naraku narrowed his eyes evilly, covering his mouth with his white fur. He was weakening.

I charged then, opening my sharp teeth towards is puny body. That's when he smiled and opened his white fur coat up, releasing a massive hoard of demons. I snarled, clawing and snapping at them, warning each one to back off. Blood stained my snow white fur from my slaughter, but they just kept coming, some attacking, and some passing me. I was concerned on where the others were headed. Still, Naraku was my main target, and to get Rin back into my arms safe and sound.

Naraku outright laughed darkly as I watched a massive, purple dust cloud surround his form. "You cannot defeat me that easily, my lord. You see I have many tricks up my sleeve. This isn't the last you've seen of me."

And he was gone.

I let out a fierce howl, thundering in the dark purple sky of snow. The smell of Rin's blood had returned and was now mixed with another scent. A powerful scent. I was glad the miasma and the barrier were gone, but the demons? - I couldn't be sure.

I ran towards rotten smell, afraid of what I would find. I knew she wasn't dead, but the way I could feel her, her mind was fading fast.

I turned back into my humanoid form when I reached an old abandon farm house. I knocked down the door, racing towards her scent. It smelled as if rotten eggs had entered her blood stream. It made me ill.

As I reached the basement I knew I had arrived in time. I opened the steel door with a bang and rushed inside. The first thing I saw was Rin, being held back by her insane sister. Mika, I believe her name was, had a gun aimed at her head, finger hovering over the trigger. This was bad, if I made a move, she would pull it and Rin would die.

From the way Rin's normal scent had changed told me she didn't have long. The poison that had entered her body was slowly killing her from the inside, the child as well. But what angered me more was the physical condition she was in. Not only was she poisoned, but her entire body looked cold, frozen. No doubt Rin was hypothermic. Her lips were blue, and she shivered uncontrollably. Her clothes were ripped and revealed some bare skin. But I couldn't smell any frost bit, which was a relief.

"Not so fast, dog boy," Mika said, pulling Rin closer. "You didn't win yet, because you see I myself have trouble losing. In fact, I hate it. I never lost in my life and I'm not going to start now."

"Sesshomaru," Rin whispered, weakly. "Don't."

I took a quick glance around the room, noticing all the chemicals on the table adjacent to my position. This girl was sick.

"Listen to your little lover there, don't think of doing anything. She's a goner anyways. Let her go and that blasted child inside her."

I started to grow tired of her antics. The beast howled inside of me. "Let her go and I'll think about sparing your life," I snarled.

"Did you not hear a word I said? I told you, try anything and I'll pull the trigger."

Her first mistake was her threats. She did not scare me, and she should know to never make a dog demon angry. "No."

She chuckled. "Can you not smell it? The poison that runs through her body? She's dying Sesshomaru, and not even you have the power to stop it. Did you think you were a god? In an hour or so, her lungs will freeze; she'll stop breathing, and collapse dead on the ground."

I could tell Rin was suffering. Her breathing started to grow heavy and she had begun wheezing. "Tick tock, what will you do?" Mika asked. "Will you try to save her, risking her life? Or will you walk, letting her go? Both way, she'll die and I'll finally have my wish."

That was the last strike. I clenched my fists, letting the power flow through me swiftly. My demonic energy reached my fingertips, glowing green from the toxic gas. I could tell the girl hadn't noticed the change in my power and that told me she was nothing more than a simple mortal. These insects…they believed to be more forceful then me? What a simpleton! I shot out my poison whip towards her and by the time the mortal noticed it, she was already flying through the air, crashing on her equipment table.

Sirens blared through the room. I knew the police had gotten through. But there was no time to hesitate and wait. I shot over to Rin who was about to collapse on the ground. She was so cold, so pale. I feared on what would happen. Picking her up, there was only one thing on my mind: to save her and my child.

"Hold on, Rin," I whispered into her ear, flashing into a ball of light and disappearing into the rising sun.
