VERY IMPORTANT READ THIS A/N!
There is I think you would call it a 'trigger warning' in this chapter, I believe. Don't worry it's not gory at all (unless you're a Dryad then this is a really violent chapter and I suggest you avoid it, ;). But seriously, there is no blood in this chapter, cut's and scrapes (Unintentional) but nothing really self inflicted. I guess you'll see what I mean when you read. I hope you like this chapter. It is a very angst filled chapter and I explain some of my reasoning at the bottom.
On a less serious note, any suggestions on truth or dare? I'm thinking of having one of the demigod's play a prank on Nico, I won't tell my idea for said prank, but I want your opinions on who it should be. (Another reason for this chapter is to give you guys enough time to make more suggestions). By the way I will try to implement the couple mix up. No promises, but I do have an idea swirling around in my head.
And finally I don't own Percy Jackson all rights go to Rick Riordan.
Percy couldn't understand the devastation he felt when hearing the words, 'Did you know Annabeth is dead?'. He excused himself and began running into the island's forest. Away from his future wife and his parents. He ignored the shouts chasing him all the way into the brushes. It felt as if his heart was going to implode in his chest. If that were really the case, death would have been a quick end to his suffering.
'Annabeth is dead'
A great sob escaped him, choking off his breath. Tears began drenching his cheeks and shirt. The farther he got from Calypso the greater his pain became and the clearer his head was. Everything was so messed up. Nothing made sense anymore. Nothing felt right. Nothing would ever be the same. Not with her gone.
Low branches thwacked him on the head every so often, catching his fine black hair in its bark. He didn't care. Roots sticking up from the ground had long torn his shoes from his feet, but that seemed like a small matter at the moment. His world was crashing down around him. The earth seemed to be going up in flames, with him stuck in the heart of the fire. How could he have let himself be so easily manipulated? he wondered as the spell became a dull patronizing voice in the back of his head.
By the time he reached the center of the forest he had relived all of his experiences with Annabeth. He almost could feel her lips on his, smell the lemon sent coming from her hair, feel her thin arms loop lovingly around his neck. Again another gasp escaped him as he stumbled into the clearing. He let himself slide onto his knees, he could care less about the mud that coated his cloths and skin, or the cuts which stung bitterly.
He let his calloused hands run through his hair. Percy tugged at the roots of them hoping that maybe he could snap himself away from the nightmare, but he knew he was stuck in the cruel reality. A reality he wished to have no part of.
Annabeth was dead.
Anger seared through his painful heart and brought a new wave of energy to his muscles. He scrambled back to his feet and pulled Riptide from his pocket. Percy let his eyes wonder to the endless expanse of trees which surrounded him. With a feral cry he began slashing his sword through the helpless timber. Wrath as his strength, he easily cut down the first five, but pathetically his fortitude began to fade.
"You are so not making this easy!" He remembered complaining the day they officially became a couple. Percy had been so nervous at time, he was so afraid she'd reject him. Annabeth had laughed and wrapped her arms around his neck.
"I am never, ever going to make things easy for you, Seaweed Brain. Get use to it."
She kissed him and he remembered the pure, mind numbing bliss he had felt. Their friends had momentarily interrupted the moment by throwing them in the lake. Percy had played a little trickery and created the private bubble for 'the best underwater kiss of all time'. His heart ached to have that special moment back. The son of Poseidon let out another angry call and severed additional tree from it's roots.
"ANNABETH!" Percy screamed, completely heart broken.
His energy fled him as he collapsed back to the ground. Percy had his sword's tip dig into the earth and used it as leverage to keep himself sitting up. He rested his forehead on Riptide's hilt and let his eyes close. Where did he go from here? His eyes reopened and he let himself examine the tree sap running down the blade. If Grover were here, Percy was sure 'Goat Boy' would be giving him an earful about the poor trees he had just slaughtered in his anger.
"Sorry, buddy." He laughed softly to himself. "I guess I just lost my head."
Percy wondered what he'd tell the camp if he ever got home. Could he even return? Knowing all of the memories he and his Wise Girl had memories galore invested in the camp, Percy didn't think he could. He admitted he was probably too cowardly to even cross the borders. Telling Chiron would be the worst. He and Annabeth were like father and daughter. Percy himself didn't know how to go on with only a mortal's life left to live, he could hardly imagine how the old centaur could handle living an eternity with that pain.
Mortal's life. Percy thought, he let his eyes wonder back to his sword. It still dripped with the clear liquid he had stolen from the trees. A morbid thought crept to his mind. If his mother knew what he was thinking, she'd have a panic attack. But it was the fastest way to return to Annabeth, one well placed stab and he'd soon be with the girl of his dreams.
She would want you to live. A soft voice whispered in his head. Do you think she'd want you to give up? Do you think she'd approve of this?
Percy's grip tighten on the hilt of his sword, "What is a life without Annabeth?"
Losing someone you care deeply about is painful, but if you love her, you won't dishonor her memory by taking the easy way out of your problems.
The son of Poseidon rashly ignored the voices advice. He figured he had probably gone crazy and the voice was an attempt by his subconscious to convince him to not die. Percy felt his lip quake as he brought the tip of the sword from the ground and rested it on his chest. He could feel the pressure on his sternum, the potential energy that his hands could cause to thrust the weapon through his heart. Maybe both he and Annabeth would be like Romeo and Juliet, one couldn't live without the other.
Something, however, wouldn't let Percy complete his intentions. He knew he was afraid. As much as he loved Annabeth, he didn't know if he could take his own life. And what about his mother? How could he just let her find him with his own sword rammed through his body? More tears of strife rolled down his face. Was he ready to end it all? Percy sat in the same place, sword hovering over his heart.
"PERCY!" A voice screeched. He didn't react as frantic hands removed his weapon from his own. His mom came into view cupping his face gently. Wiping away tears like she had when he was a little kid. With a stern tone she wheezed, "I don't ever, EVER want you doing that. EVER! Do you understand me, young man?"
He said nothing, and instead collapsed limply into her arms. Her hands rubbed circles into his back as he blubbered like a child into her shirt. She began humming a soft melody to him as she rocked them both back and forth. For a brief moment he let his mind revert to that of when he was six and sat with her. Percy didn't normally let his mom hold him like this anymore, but after all he's been through in the past week alone, he needed to have his 'mamma's boy' time.
"She's...she's." He couldn't even complete the sentence.
"I'm so sorry, baby." She breathed. Percy could hear he sniffling as well. "I'm so, so sorry, Percy."
"Why is she here!" A voice screeched form behind them.
Percy lifted his head from his mom's shoulder to see Cupid standing just ten feet away from them. In an instant the son of Poseidon wrenched himself from his mother's grasp and reclaimed his sword. He blocked Sally from the Roman god's sight.
With a glare that could melt ice Percy hissed, "Egó̱ tha sas skotó̱sei argá kai trofodotoún ta korákia."*
"Gaea's going to be the undoing of her own plan." Cupid muttered under his breath as he glared accusingly at the mortal behind Percy. He obviously ignored the son of Poseidon's threat.
"Hey buddy!" the demigod snapped. "My eyes are up here."
"Yes, yes they are." The god of love agreed before he began chanting. "Augendae carmine et oculos ejus verum."**
All of the world went black for Percy, he felt as if he could feel nothing at all. No love or hate, happiness or despair. Something had hit the ground and someone screamed. He couldn't react to any of it. The son of Poseidon's will had been bent and his own thoughts finally subdued in the endless chasm of the spell. No longer did he have to be close to Calypso for the incantation to be strongest. Percy's conscious finally gave up and fell into a deep sleep.
Besides what is the point of life without Annabeth?
LONG AUTHOR'S NOTE PLEASE READ:
Hey guys, I know this was a really angst filled chapter. I don't know how well you liked it, but I've had this idea for a couple days now. I wanted Percy to have one final struggle before he became a puppet. For a while at least. Don't worry I'll explain a little about this chapter. Other things will wait for later.
To those of you who thought he was done fighting after the chapter 'Clouds' sorry for the sudden fight back in him, but honestly I thought he needed to have some kind of reaction to Annabeth's 'death'. After 'Clouds' and during 'Mother-In-Law' Percy still had something to fight for, Annabeth, their future, so to find out she was more than likely (but we know not really) dead would be devastating enough to drag him into reality. I had another way this chapter could have gone, but the idea wasn't forming as well in my head.
The spell was, at first, only strongest around Calypso because it was kind of like she was the spell's reminder of it's job. This time however, Cupid doesn't want Percy to ever wake up, at least not until Gaea's plan is fulfilled. He's taking more precautions. I'll explain later why he was so mad at the sight of Sally, but I also want you guys to take a guess at his reasons.
*Percy had said- "I will kill you slowly and feed you to the crows."
** Cupid had said- "Enhance the spell and blind his eyes to the truth."
And please keep reviewing and if you can give me truth or dare suggestions. I will find a way to try and add in the couple mix up. I have a pretty funny way to do it in mind.
