Chapter 21: An Extra Test
As the weeks went on, Harry continued with his studies, and worked his way through his exams. Overall, they were fairly simple. One interesting thing which occurred during this time was Quirrel had been found dead in the Forbidden Forest by Hagrid, clutching the fake Philosopher's Stone in his hand. The back of his head was apparently badly disfigured and his lip coated in unicorn blood. Harry filed this information to go along with the other occurrences of this year… Harry strongly suspected, based off what he'd sensed of the man before, he had been playing host to a malevolent spirit. However, as the last week of classes was coming, an unexpected trial appeared.
Harry and his friends were out by the lake, enjoying this free time before they parted for the summer. As they lay in the grass, Harry felt something odd. There was another kaiju nearby. It stood out clearly, and Harry turned to his friends to warn them.
"Guys, you better get inside," said Harry, "something's coming".
Before anyone could respond, this other flew into view: a massive creature which looked like a Darker-colored Mothra. It was Battra, Mothra's more belligerent cousin. Harry led his friends into the walls of the castle, and then prepared for what he needed to do. He hurried back outside, saw no one else present, and deactivated the limiter. In a burst of light, Asulmagus emerged, and he roared to get the attention of the other kaiju.
"Battra, what are you doing here?" said Asulmagus.
"I feel it, the corruption flowing from within this place," said Battra, "It threatens all those around it. A human with two souls, one suppressed by the parasite latched onto it, and the other… darkness wearing a mask of light".
"I know of both you speak of," said Asulmagus, "And they shall be dealt with in time. Think for a moment, to attack them now would turn even more against our kind".
"I have heard the tales of you, Asulmagus," said Battra, "You are capable of wielding powers unseen among the kaiju before. Interesting to find you here, consorting with the humans".
"They possess knowledge of how to control magic, and if I wish to learn it, I must do so among them," said Asulmagus, "Otherwise, it would become unstable, and dangerous to all around me".
"And you think that gives you a reason to lower yourself such, mire yourself amongst the corrupt?" said Battra.
"Battra!" said Asulmagus, "You need to contain yourself. The students in this place have done nothing to you!"
"It matters not!" screamed Battra, "those who threaten the world must be destroyed!"
"At what cost, Battra?" replied Asulmagus, how many innocent lives would you extinguish to punish a single foe?"
"However many it takes!" said Battra coldly, "how can you be certain that all those you defend will not follow the same corrupt path?"
"Simple: their morality would not allow for it," said Asulmagus, "while some may choose darker paths, the majority will not".
"Ah, I see you've bought into my dear cousin's words," said Battra, "Well, let's just see what you've learned!"
Battra attacked quickly, firing his Antennae Beam. Asulmagus leapt into the air, dodging out of the way. Asulmagus knew what Battra was capable of, as both he and Mothra shared more or less the same abilities. He retaliated with a swift slash of his claws, but struck nothing but air. Battra took advantage of this, and vibrated his wing to create a powerful and painful sound. Asulmagus braced himself as best as he could and took the attack, shaking his head to try and clear the ringing from his ears. He kept sight of his opponent, however, and transfigured a portion of the air Battra was soon to pass though into a sheet of ice, and kept it in place with a simple Levitation Charm. Battra ran into it, smashing right through.
"Well, it seems you do have a few interesting tricks," said Battra, but they will not be enough!"
Battra spun into a twisting dive attack, which Asulmagus once again dodged. He knew he needed to end this battle quickly before anyone at Hogwarts was injured. Asulmagus focused his magic, and searched for something which could surprise his foe. His magic responded by channeling forwards, but not towards his hand as he expected. Rather, the magic channeled towards his mouth. He let this power fly free, and from his mouth came a jet of primal flame, unaltered by the radiation which coursed through him. Battra was caught off guard, and took the full brunt of the attack. Battra emerged intact, but not unscathed. In fact Asulmagus could tell he'd won this round.
"I suggest you leave this place," said Asulmagus, "I will not allow you to harm any here".
"You… you are just as I heard," said Battra, "you have proved your resolve. I shall leave this place, but heed my warning: one day those you seek to protect will turn against you".
With those final words, Battra took wing and flew away. Asulmagus heard shouting coming from the castle, and flew to the deeper forest, and reactivated his limiter. He opened the specially-charmed bag the Flamels had gifted him, retrieving a spare set of robes. He put them on, and started making his way back to the castle. However, before he got too far, he felt eyes on him. He paused and looked around, spotting a centaur just off the path. Having read up on these beings, he knew he wasn't in any real danger. He watched as the centaur stepped out, and looked at him with consideration.
"Greetings, noble dragon mage," said the centaur, "I am Firenze".
"It is an honor to meet you, Firenze," said Harry, "I am Harry Potter, also known as Asulmagus. I came to this place to avoid sight so that my secret could stay as such".
"I can understand your reasons," said Firenze, staring up at the sky, "Last night, Mars was bright".
"It was?" said Harry, "what do you think it means?"
"I know not, but it was rising through Draco," said Firenze, "this trail will lead you safely out of the forest, go with caution, young one".
Harry nodded, and continued on his way towards the forest's edge… and the incoming barrage of questions he'd soon be asked.
A/N: And there we go! Next time: The adventure continues! See you then!
