End
Years later...
It is raining like it has all morning as I walk through the other graves. Most of these belong to older people, not younger ones. Looking for the one I sought, relieved at seeing it though I'd been here many times. Walking up to the grave, I can't believe that it still looks new after all this time. I still feel guilty that it was my fault.
The rain suddenly slacks off and the sun shines as I crouch down. It is surrounded by a gigantic willow tree, apparently he would have liked it here. I could see why. It was nice to see a bit of life here, to remind people that not everything would die. That something would always survive, even if it was only a cold comfort. It still showed they had lived and loved.
Hesitating slightly before I run a hand down the stone. It was a very beautiful stone indeed. Voices drift back to me from the cemetery gates. Memories flood through my mind with them. Pushing them away, I had things to tell today. Finally.
"Everyone misses you. Even I miss you and compared to them I didn't know you. It feels different without you two playing off each other, it was always fun to watch. Well, anyways I thought it would interest you to know that Shane just retired from being Captain. Morpheus is going to take his spot. Even after all these years I still don't like him...,"
I find myself stopping and staring at my shoulder. Remembering that horrible day all too clearly. Before I continue " You know, there's not a single scar on any of us, even though we should be covered in them. I can't help the feeling that you three had something to do with it. Also with the fact that Shane, Davies and Jenks survived. It was a miracle, I'm so sorry that you didn't. Thank you for helping us, we couldn't have done it without you. I suppose... I suppose I should go now. The others are waiting for me outside. "
Getting up and looking at the tree for a second, before shaking my head. I turn and walk slowly out of the cemetary. My adopted son, Zane Anderson asks "What'd you say Dad ? ".
Sometimes he reminds me of Neo, it doesn't help that Zane has brown-eyes and black-hair too. I didn't know what to think the first time I saw him. Well, really he was our adopted son.
Walking up to them, feeling incredibly relieved to see them and kiss both of them lightly. My love looking up slightly, asking " Can't you do better than that, Ad ? Shouldn't you love me more than him ? Hmpf, think I should just leave, don't you Zane ?."
Smiling, I run a hand over his cheek, leaning down for a deeper kiss.
Casuing Zane to exclaim " Eeeewwww !. Dad stop it, doesn't Daddy have cooties."
Moving away so that Neo has room to crouch down " Zane cooties are for girls, not boys. "
Zane replies "I don't like girls. I wanna be like Dad. "
Laughing I exclaim "You can wait a long while before you're interested in anyone. Preferably, a very long while."
"Uncle Neo, Smith. Zane guess what ? " Rebbeca runs up. The young blond woman was so excited, I smile.
Neo asks her "Did you make it ? ".
She says "With a lot of help from a certain Agent Smith. "
I growl "I'm not just an FBI Agent, I am Director of the FBI, thank you very much. " .
Rebbeca, Neo and I laugh at the memory of Neo saying something similar all those years ago. Rebbeca walks away to go and tell Mort.
Then Neo's cell rings, he flips it open to answer "Anderson. Heh, we're doing good, Mel. No, I'm not doing that.
In case you forgot he's my husband now, not your's. Wait, What ?. You're two hours early !. All right, give us a few minutes we'll meet you at home. "
I had to smile again looking down at the ring for a few seconds. It'd only been a few months since Neo'd put it on for me. Now Mel got to be jealous, instead of me. Her reaction at our wedding had been nearly as hilarious Eric's. Picking up Zane, I walk over, open the back door and buckle him into the old Audi's back-seat. Then I walk around to the passenger-side as Neo gets in the driver's.
30 minutes later
We walk in the door Mel, Mary, Josh, Tommy and Eric were waiting. Being pulled into the living room where Mary asks
" Uncle Neo, how'd you and Uncle Adrian meet ? "
Neo protests "Oh no, you don't. Get him to tell it, he's got the better voice for telling."
I smirk " You just like hearing me talk about you love. "
Zane sits himself beside Neo. He leans against my shoulder. Humming the exact tune that Mort had when I'd met him for the first time.
Remembering it clearer than ever as I start " I really, really didn't want to be in New York. I wanted anything but.. ,"
Zane laughs " Dad said butt. "
Neo chuckles as I continue " I didn't think I'd need Neo then. Turns out I'd need him for a lot of things..."
My pretty Neo. Pretty ... useful.
