Emily sat there, watching the girl she loved. Air was being moved into her lungs through a tube in her nose. Peaceful. The girl laying in the hospital bed in front of Emily looked peaceful. After Emily got up the morning after their night together, she tried several times, unsuccessfully, to wake Paige up.
"Paige. Paige, time to wake up." Emily said as she shook Paige lightly. "Paige." Emily began to panic with each passing second that Paige didn't wake of move. "Spencer!" She yelled as she ran to Spencer's bedroom door. "Spencer!" She yelled as she banned on the door.
"Emily, good God. What's wrong?" Spencer asked.
"She won't wake up!" Emily yelled as she ran back into her room.
"Emily, slow down." Spencer said as she walked into their room. Emily was shaking Paige again and telling her to wake up.
"She needs to wake up, Spencer. I can't get her to wake up." Emily was full on crying at this point. Aria and Hannah walked into the room, woken by Emily screaming.
"What is going on?" Aria asked.
"Call 911. We need an ambulance here now." Spencer said calmly. Hannah turned and immediately dialed her phone, rattling off Emily's address. Emily sat holding Paige's hand as she cried.
"Emmy." Came a voice behind Emily. A hand on her back brought her out of her daydream, looking to her left to see her father. "It's been two days honey. Come get something."
"I'm not leaving her." Emily said coldly.
"Emmy." Wayne said.
"Don't ask me to leave her. She's not leaving me. I'm not leaving her." Emily said, not looking back at her father. Emily didn't even flinch when her mother walked in and sat on the opposite side of Paige.
"She is very pretty." Pam said.
"She's beautiful." Emily stated. "Inside and out."
"Tell me about her." Pam said.
"I don't want to. I want you to meet her. I want her to tell you things about her life. I need her to wake up. I always thought I was strong. Dealing with Maya, walking away from Alison, building a house. But Paige." She moved so that she could reach Paige's face, rubbing the back of here hand up and down her cheek. "Paige blew me out of the water. She dealt with Alison in high school. She struggled in ways I couldn't imagine. Her father drugged her, to make her into what he wanted when she started slowing down. But she fought. She has a beautiful soul. And I am in love with her. So I need her to wake up, so I can tell her that I love her." Emily leaned up, whispering into Paige's ear. "Please wake up."
Emily's parents eventually went back to their hotel room, after realizing that they were not going to get Emily to leave to eat or go home to rest. The girls floated in and out of the room, taking turns just to sit with Emily while she waited. The doctor had been in several times to check on Paige's vitals, relaying to Emily what he learned. After arriving at the hospital by ambulance, Paige's doctor went in to see what was going on with Paige's heart. He did several repairs on valves and a few artery repairs. They were now just waiting on Paige's body to wake itself up. The doctor said that this could take days, but given Paige's weakend state, maybe not at all. It was the worst waiting game for Emily.
It was on day eight, Emily laying in the bed with Paige, that she started talking to Paige again. She had stopped after the third day. She stopped talking to everyone else on the second day, after her parents left. But she was angry at Paige, leaving her alone in a hospital with nothing to do but stare at her, so she stopped talking to her. She just sat there. Not responding to the doctor or nurses telling her progress notes. Not responding to the girls questions. They learned to just come in and sit with her, talk to her without expecting a response.
"Eight days is long enough to keep me waiting. I know your really tired right now, Paige. And I know that your body is trying to fix itself. But I'm dyeing here, waiting for you. I'm too scared to step into that hallway without knowing for sure that I am going to come back here, and your big brown eyes are going to be starring back at me. I'm too scared to leave, because I'm afraid you won't be here for me when I come back. I was so lost before I got your case. I forgot how to live. What it actually means to live. To feel something. You fixed me Paige. This whole time, I was supposed to be helping you, fixing you. But you helped me see what I was missing. What I needed. So now I need you to wake up and come home with me, so that I don't lose what you've shown me. So that it won't be a waste."
A/N: Sorry for the delays. Sorry for the short update, just a filler chapter. I suck. I know how I want this story to end, but I think that it may upset about 95% of you. So I may change the ending that I have in mind.
