When Lee returned to the room after telling his father the news, he found Kara asleep, still holding their daughter. He had been wondering when she would lose her battle against exhaustion – it had been a long day for both of them and, unfortunately, due to return of the cylons, he would have to go back to work sooner than he wished. It was clear that, in order to give the people on New Caprica a chance to be saved, everyone's help was needed…

Lee carefully removed the baby from his wife's arms and sat on sofa by the bed's side. He wanted to enjoy all the time he could with his new daughter before he needed to go back to work. He didn't want to be like his father: all work and no family. Delegating, that was what he had to do in order to balance his work and his family. He remembered the talk he had had with the Admiral earlier through the phone.

"Lee? What happened?" the Old Man asked. "Captain Agathon said that you had some personal business to worry about."

"It was Kara, Dad. She had the baby," he told his father with no hesitation. The enthusiasm was clear in his voice. "You have a granddaughter."

There was a moment of silence and Lee wondered if his father had accidently hung up. "Come again? A granddaughter?" Adama asked in disbelief.

"Yes, Dad. She came early but she's perfect," Lee said. "Her name is Jamie."

"How's Kara doing?" he asked. Analyzing his father's tone, Lee could almost picture the smile on his face.

"Great. She was amazing," he told his father.

"Congratulations, Son," Adama said. "I'll try to pay a visit soon and meet that little girl."

"Thanks. About the planning…"

"Don't worry about it for now," the Admiral said. "The pilots have to get back in shape first. Then, we'll worry about the planning. Put your family first, Lee."

That moment, Lee felt closer to his father than he ever had in the past. He was acting like his parent, not like his admiral…

There were steps outside and Helo stepped through the curtain. He blinked at the image of Lee holding a newborn wrapped with a yellow blanket. "The kid is already here?!"

"Shh," Lee said. "You'll wake Kara."

The XO approached him in order to get a better glimpse of the child. "What is it? Tell me she had a boy."

"Girl, 6 pounds. Seems like you lost the bet," Lee told him. "How tragic…"

Helo grumbled something about Racetrack and Kat getting rich. "Pretty. What's her name?"

"Jamie," Lee said proudly. Just saying his little girl's name made a goofy smile cross his face.

"You know, Jamie Karla doesn't sound so bad," Helo suggested.

Lee glared at him. "If you want a kid named after yourself, Helo, have Sharon carrying another spawn of yours. I'm sure Kara would agree with me if she was awake."

"I think I'll wait a little longer before I honor the fleet with the presence of another Agathon. I plan on getting married first, you know?" the XO told him. His plans on proposing to Sharon were being delayed a little too long. "Tell the proud mommy that I was here. I'll be back in a few hours. It's kind of late."

"Late?" Lee asked. He had lost track of time long ago.

"Yeah," Helo told him. "It's past 0100 in the morning… Well, I'm gonna catch a few hours of sleep."

I should do the same, Lee thought after XO made his way out. He got up and put his daughter in the plastic bassinet in order to take her to the nursery. It was time both of them joined Kara in dreamland.

---

Two days later, Kara and little Jamie were released from the life station. The baby was doing great, despite the scare she had given to her parents.

Lee opened the door and let his wife in, carrying the baby on her arms. He made a mental note to find the baby carrier he had gotten months earlier, so the baby wouldn't have to be carried all the time.

"Welcome home, Jamie," Kara murmured to her sleeping daughter. Entering the cabin, the place felt different than before. It had become a home for her during the past months, probably because Lee was there with her. Now that their child had joined the picture, it was even homier.

She lounged on the couch and let the baby rest against her chest as she drew little circles on her small back. She wondered if the infinite love she felt for her child right now would change – like a new toy, she would lose interest for. No, never, she promised herself. Her daughter would always be a major part of her life; she would prove Socrata Thrace (if she could see her from hell) that she could be an extraordinary mom if she wanted.

Lee, who had at some point entered the nursery, showed up with a grey baby carrier and put it next to the couch. "You can let her sleep in the carrier if you want," he told his wife, sitting on the edge of the couch, by her feet.

She shook her head. "She's just fine right here," Kara declared, still caressing her baby's back. Lee had been there all the time. He barely left her side for anything else but using the latrines while she was awake. She doubted he had even step foot in the CIC since he had been called to the life station two days earlier. "You don't need to stay her all the time, Lee. We won't blame you if you need to spend some time working…"

"And leave you here alone with a newborn? They can live without me," he said. Yes, he felt kind of guilty for being here when everybody was working their asses off in order to rescue everyone in New Caprica. But he didn't want to force Kara to deal with the baby alone.

"We'll do fine," she insisted. "Go there and help them finding a way to save those people on the planet." I plan on joining you soon, she thought. During her time in sickbay, Kara had concluded that she wouldn't just stay behind and do nothing, even though flying was probably not an option. However, she was damn sure that any plan to take down the toasters would have to be crazy, way out-of-the-box. Conclusion: they needed her – the best out-of-the-box thinker in the fleet.

Lee seemed hesitant. "Are you sure?"

She gave him a classic 'I'm Starbuck, I can do anything' look. "Yes, Daddy, I'm sure. If I need you, I'll just pick the phone and have Hoshi summon you."

He smiled. "Daddy… you think she's gonna call me that?" Lee asked dreamily. "She probably already can do that already…"

Kara chuckled. He believed their kid was an over-gifted, way superior being. "Sure, she can. I even bet Jamie can ride a viper by herself. Now, get lost, and leave us girls alone to do girly things. You know, brush each other's hair, paint our toenails, have a pillow fight…"

"Funny," he said sarcastically, getting up. "Call…"

"Out!" she interrupted him, pointing at the hatch.

He kisses her cheek and the baby's head and left the room like he had been ordered.

---

It was the knocking on the cabin's hatch that made Kara get up from the bed. She had spent hours just watching her daughter sleep – she was amazed how something that simple was so dazing in her eyes. Now, Jamie was wide awake, her blue eyes staring at her mom like she knew all her secrets and still trusted her completely.

Kara shook her head and lifted the baby, carrying her carefully. Sometimes, she feared she would break the kid in a half… She was careful not to turn the main lights too high on her way to the door; they could hurt Jamie's eyes, used to the darkness inside her stomach.

"Who is it?" she asked before opening the door.

"It's me Kara, your father-in-law," she heard him say from the other side.

Kara immediately opened the hatch to see the Old Man standing in there. He had promised to pay a visit as soon as she was released from the sickbay.

"It's good to see you, Grandpa," she told him with a grin covering her face.

Her father-in-law returned the grin before entering the cabin and sitting on the couch. "Now, let me see that baby," he said, reaching for his granddaughter.

Kara passed her daughter carefully and watched the Old Man, awkwardly at first, holding the little girl. He seemed at ease, more than she had ever seen him before.

"A beautiful little girl you've got here, Starbuck," he said, not looking away from his granddaughter. "She reminds me of Lee when he was a newborn. All bald and small."

"Well, I think that is common among all babies," Kara pointed out, caressing the baby's foot.

"I guess you're right," he agreed finally looking at Kara. "How are you feeling?"

"Great," she said. "I feel like I could climb a mile-long mountain, if there was any, I mean. I feel high on energy."

He laughed at her analogy. "Everything is different now, isn't it?" he asked knowingly.

"Yeah," Kara agreed. It was like the kid was the center of her universe now, which was way beyond what she had ever imagined. She just wanted her to be happy, on top of everything. Had her mother ever felt that way?

"She's lucky to have you and Lee as parents," the Old Man told her seriously, now looking down at Jamie again. "Finally, the Adama family has a girl again. She's the first since my sister. Even my cousins had all boys. Carolanne believe the family was cursed."

Kara was surprised. Bill Adama rarely referred his late family… She didn't even know Lee had an aunt. She decided to change the subject. There would be other times to talk about that. "How are things with the toasters showing up again?"

"Not good," he informed her. "We managed to send a raptor close to the planet's atmosphere and contact the guys in there. Anders said Baltar surrendered them to the cylons but they are forming a resistance. We need to act soon."

She sighed. Poor Sam. He had gotten out from one hell in Caprica to get into another one… They might not be together anymore, but she didn't want him to die. "I wanna help with the planning," she declared. "I won't get myself in the front line but I need to do something…"

The Admiral couldn't say no; she was the best they got. "I'll see what we can do. Just worry about your daughter for now," he told her, passing the baby back to her mother.

"I want to do this for her," she insisted, putting Jamie in the baby carrier. "I don't want her to grow up afraid of the toasters. She needs to know that we won't let them get away that easily."

Adama nodded. He had the same concerns. Not letting his granddaughter's innocence be destroyed was now one of his biggest priorities. He owed that much to Lee. "We'll make sure that happens."

Both of them got up and, without hesitation, shared a hug. "What do you hear, Starbuck?" he asked. It had been a while since had used that line…

"Nothing but the rain, sir," she responded. But then, the baby started whimpering in the carrier. She took one step behind. "Alright, maybe also my kid asking for her lunch…"

He laughed. "Go feed her, then," he said, leaning close to the carrier in order to plant a kiss on the baby's forehead. "I'll come back soon."

"See you then, Dad," she told him when he was about to exit, calling him by that name for the first time. She turned around to tend her daughter before she could see how shinny his eyes were and just heard him close the hatch on the way out.
