Okay so maybe laying down for a nap twenty minutes before Gilbert got home wasn't my brightest idea, but hey I'm not really know for my bright idea.
"Mom!" Gilbert called as he walked through the front door. "Mom!" He called even louder. Gilbert pauses when he heard a low rattling noise, he turned around noticing a blanket covered object in the far left of the room, it clearly wasn't there when he left for school. Gilbert gradually reached for the blanket stopping whenever the object would shake. He bit his lip before finally ripping the blanket off the object. Gilbert gave out a loud shriek as something hit his face. He quickly rubbed his face, pushing the hair from his eyes. He focused his sight back on the uncovered object.
"Bird cage?" He mumbled. "Wait," he quickly turned to see a small yellow bird hoping around on the coffee table. Gilbert gasped excitedly as he quietly danced around, "Yes," he cheered softly. He then turned to the small bird, "here birdie birdie," he cooed as he slowly approached the animal. The bird gave out a loud chirp before flying towards Gilbert. He shrieked as he crouched down covering his head. "Mom!" Gilbert cried as he listened to bird fly around.
"Mo-" Gilbert paused when he heard the bird stopped. He slowly looked up to see me stretched over the couch holding the scared bird in my hands.
"I see you found the present," I said as I straightened up, Gilbert watched as I walked up to the small cage and gently placed the bird back in, "there ya' go buddy."
Gilbert immediately shot up from patch of carpet he took for refuge, "you got me a bird!"
"Yes, but-" I started, I could already see the hope drain from Gilbert's face, "you wanted him, so he's your responsibility. You have to feed him, and changed the cage and do whatever this bird needs."
"Yes, yes," Gilbert nodded as he inched closer to the cage I stood in front of.
"And you need to be good, " I continued, "good grades, do chores, don't be a fuckin' gremlin, ya' know."
"Can I keep him in my room?" Gilbert bounced with every word.
"God I hope so," I smiled, "or I wasted a lot of time setting up the cage in there."
"Holy fuck!" He exclaimed as he ran upstairs.
"Language!' I shouted after him. I turned to the cage to see the small bird happily bouncing around. "Come on," I gently picked the cage up, "you'll love him I swear," I told the bird as we headed upstairs.
I ran my fingers through my newly cut hair, my mind wandering off to the past week. Guess I didn't give Gilbert enough credit, I thought it'd be three days before he got bored with the bird and I had to give it away. However it's been a week and the boy is still as excited to see the thing as the first day.
My only problem was the name he gave it; Gilbird. Naming a pet a pun of your name, who raised that child-
Wait.
Damn he really is my child.
"Mom!" Gilbert called, I focused enough to look up to see Gilbert sitting in the hairdresser chair across from me from the reflection of the mirror.
"Look at you," I smiled, "new haircut is looking great." Gilbert smiled wide before the hair dresser straightened his head to look forward.
"Oh he's your son?" the lady sweeping the floor asked, "thought you were siblings or something."
"yeah," I mumbled avoiding eye contact hoping the lady would take the hint and end the conversation.
"Is he adopted?" She continued.
Damn it.
I sighed shifting around in my chair, "yeah."
"What is he eight, nine?"
"Ten," I mumbled as I pulled at a small piece of my hair.
"Wow, but you're so young," she exclaimed. My face burned as I watched people turn to look in the reflection of the mirror. I could barely hear Gilbert calling for me over my own heart beat and rapid breathing.
"MOM!" He shouted causing other people in the salon to jump.
I held my breath as I turned to see Gilbert standing at the side of my chair. "Gilbert, oh," I took a deep breath as I watched the nosy lady go back to her sweeping. I turned back to him "you look so nice."
"What are we having for dinner?" Gilbert asked as he climbed up on a chair.
"Spaghetti," I replied as I chopped up a cucumber then sliding it into the salad bowl.
"I want pizza," he whined pressing the side of his face against the table.
"You can have pizza this weekend with Jazmin."
Gilbert slowly lifted his head from the table, "why?"
"She's baby sitting you Saturday night," I looked up from my chopping, "could have sworn I told you."
Gilbert turned around to the calendar I had hung up on the wall, "why does it say date on Saturday? We know it's a date it's a calendar."
I gave out a chuckle as Gilbert turned back to me, "birdie, I know you are not that dumb, you know that means."
"Why are you going on a date," Gilbert asked as he slouched down in his chair.
"A friend at work set it up." I explained as I turned to the stove.
"Why?" Gilbert pressed.
I took a deep as I moved the pot of sauce to a different burner, "because some people think being single is the worst thing in the world so when you tell your coworker that you haven't dated since high school she loses her freakin' mind and starts trying to hook you up with every guy she comes in contact with so you agree to a date to shut her the fuck up!" I smacked the stove, I held my breath until I realized it was on an off burner.
"Why?" He repeated.
I love that boy but I swear if he says why one more time.
I stepped away from the stove brushing my hands on my pants, "Gil listen, it's only a couple hours, and you'll be with Jazmin not to mention your bird, it'll be fine, okay?"
Gilbert slowly pulled himself up in his chair, "okay."
"Good," I said as I planted a soft kiss on the top of his head. "And besides the guys paying for everything and who and I to turn down a free meal."
