You guys are the best. Enjoy!
I saw the knife come towards me in slow motion. Hans swung it in a high ark and it caught the sun's light, glinting. It made me wonder how such a deadly object could look so beautiful. I felt myself relax against him, prepare myself for the impact of the knife. I prepared myself to die. And then an image appeared before my eyes – Pocahontas, Quasimodo, Ariel, Eric, Peter, John… everyone who had died, everyone who lost the chance to live, yelled at me, no longer as enemies but as one, a single word.
Live.
I rolled from under Hans just as the blade struck the ground. I heard him hiss in annoyance and my brain processed two thoughts calmly. One – Hans was now my enemy. I had to get away from him no matter what. Two – I was going to live. This time I knew the games would not have a winner – Frolo was going to kill every single one of us and there would be no camera's to prove we didn't hunt each other down. If we let him that is.
'Elsa!' Hans yelled, his voice full of rage and I wondered briefly how long he had been planning on killing me. With a swish of my hand the ground beneath him froze over and he slipped on the ice, landing with a crack. He groaned but was on his feet in a second. At the last moment I managed to freeze the blade of the knife and it hit my arm. I felt pain and blood but the knife had shattered before it had done much damange to my arm. I kicked Hans in the stomach, sending hin coughing and spluttering and brought my hand to his face. As he landed on the ground I grabbed Hans by the collar and slammed him into a nearby tree. His skull cracked and his eyes rolled back. His breath was shallow. I didn't care. I left him there.
I sprinted into the forest, my feet hitting the ground hard and I was thankful I still had my training suit on from filming the propo's. The forest was a blur and I was running purely on adrenaline. I had to find water fast. I turned my head left, to see if there was a lake nearby and then right. The blond kid grinned at me and then sped past me, a blur. I blinked and stopped in confusion. After a few seconds the kid zapped back towards me and stopped at my feet, grinning. He barely came up to my waist. If he was scared he didn't show it.
'Name's Dash.' He said.
'Elsa' I said. We stared at each other. Then he puffed out his chest.
'If you come with me I'll protect you, Ice Queen' he said in an important voice. More like I'll protect you I thought but smiled and nodded.
'So, have you found any shelter?'
Dash chewed on the inside of his cheek.
'Uh, no'
'Food?'
'No'
'Water?'
'Nope. But I did find a little girl.'
We sprinted a few metres till we reached a tree. In the hollow of it sat the tiny girl with two ponytails. She was sobbing quietly so I picked her out of the tree and craddled her in my arms.
'You're okay. We'll take care of you.' I promised her as she clutched my shirt. 'What's your name?'
'Boo' the child sobbed.
'Hi, Boo. I'm Elsa. That's Dash. Wanna say hi?' Boo peeked at Dash.
'Boo' she said.
'Dash' said Dash. Then we set off. Boo started to get heavy after half an hour of walking but I didn't want her to walk. In case of an attack Dash could run away. I at least could protect Boo if she was close to me. I told Dash to stay close and started looking for water all over the place. It was starting to get dark when we finally spotted a tiny river.
'Oh thank God!' I exclaimed, rushing towards it. I slid down the muddy slope and made an ice container from thin air to pour the water inside. Boo and Dash waited for me anxiously.
'I wouldn't drink that if I were you' A voice said. I whirled round but other than Boo, Dash and me no one was around.
'Who was that?' I whispered into the night, trying not to alert the kids.
'I did' I turned around quickly to find a boy standing close to me – way too close to me. He looked maybe fourteen and wore a pink and purple stripped jumper, skinny jeans and boots. His hair was spiked up in every direction and dyed dark purple. His eyes were a startling golden and he had a big, mischevious grin. I pointed my hand at him, ready to shoot ice.
'Who are you?' I barked at him.
'That water is poisoned, you know' he said casually and I stared as he dissolved into the night, his grin remaining where he was seconds before for a moment before dissolving too.
'Nice pair of kids you got there' the boy said from above the slope. He was standing behind Boo and Dash, grinning. 'Does Jack know?'
A shard of ice sailed in his direction but he disappeared again and the shard shot through his phantom grin, dissolving it.
'Show yourself!' I yelled.
'Boo!' The boy appeared right behind me. I yelped and jumped back.
'Boo!' Boo said excitedly. I conuured another ice shard into my hand and aimed to stab the boy in the shoulder. He caught my hand by the wrist and started shaking it.
'Nice to meet you, your majesty' he suddenly knelt down at my feet, his head bowed. 'My name is Cheshire, and I am here to serve you.'
'Are you crazy?' I asked in disbelief as he hopped back up.
'I'm not crazy' Cheshire said slowly. 'My reality is just different from yours.'
'You do realise we're in an arena full of deadly kids' I said, gripping the ice shard hard, my knuckled going white.
'This is a place like no place on earth' Cheshire said in delight. 'A land full of wonder, mystery and danger!' Cheshire threw his hands wide. 'Some say to survive it, you need to be mad as a hatter. Which, luckily, I am.' He grinned. 'There's two people in this arena – the ones who want to kill you and the ones who want to kill the ones who want to kill you.'
'Okay' I said slowly, edging away from him.
'Melt the ice – it makes for the perfect water. Every liquid and anything edible in this place is poisoned.' Cheshire laughed. 'So I guess we'll all starve.'
Boo started crying. I glared at Cheshire.
'There's nothing to melt the ice with. We're leaving' I announced.
'Will you take me with you?' He asked.
'No, thanks' I said, seeing the fear in Dash's eyes as he gazed at the boy.
'As you wish, your majesty' Cheshire bowed low. 'Any time you may need me, I'll help you.'
'Thanks a bunch' I said sarcastically, climbing out of the ditch. 'Any idea where we can find shelter?'
'Hmmm' Cheshire tapped his chin. 'If you do not know where you are going any road will get you there.' And with that he was gone.
'Well that was maddeningly unhelpful' I shook my head and took Dash and Boo by their hands.
'C'mon, let's find some shelter.'
It was about an hour later when the sun had finally set that we finally came across a cave. It was small and from a distance I could see the light flickering inside. I deicded to move past it but without a warning Boo and Dash ripped away from me and towards the warmth of the light.
'Wait!' I hissed at them, running after them towards the cave. They tumbled in, me following and we landed in an awkward pile on the floor. There was only one person inside the cave. A short, dark skinned girl with a mass of dark curls and full lips, dressed in a mechanic outfit.
'Elsa!' she said with delight.
'You know me?' I asked, pulling the kids to their feet and pushing them behind me.
'Everyone knows you!' the girl said. 'We want to help you. Well, most of us do.' She extended her plump hand to me. 'I'm Audrey, pleased to meet ya.'
'Elsa' I said with a smile. She sat us down around the tiny naft lamp she had and I melted my ice over it, pouring it into ice cups and handing it to the thirsty kids and Audrey.
'So who's on our side?' I asked, sipping my water. Audrey gulped hers down.
'Uh, I'm not sure. The other kids, I'm pretty sure at least half the people around here. But we need to be cautious.' Audrey said. I nodded and offered to take first watch. I walked outside and leaned against the rocky wall of the cave as Audrey extinguished her naft lamp. I stared at the night sky when suddenly the anthem came on. The seal appeared on the sky followed by 'fallen children'. I watched the faces appear, bitter feeling stirring in my stomach, reminidng me of the first night in the arena when I made my first allie, Milo.
First came Phillip the Archer from District one, then Adam from District two, who looked beastly, big and hard to kill. Next was Yao, a short Chinese guy with a black eye from District four followed by Carlotta, the old woman from six. A grinning photo of an auburn-haired girl of about twelve in a cowboy outfit popped up, reminding me of Anna. It was a girl called Jessie, from District eight. I gritted my teeth when Pocahontas's sister's, Nakoma's, picture came up and breathed a sight of relief when the final dead, Thomas from eleven, faded into the night.
Merida's brother was still alive, thank God.
But so was Hans.
This was going to be a long competiton.
Happy Disney Games and may the Odds be Ever in your Favour.
Yeah, right.
I know some characters are Dreamworks and Pixar but I just couldn't find anyone to make a tribute out of xD oh, just for the record, the things Cheshire says are actual quotes from the movie so :p Anway, review! Love ya all! I'm so glad we all survived this year. *three finger salute*
