Can't help it if I space in a daze

My eyes tune out the other way

I may switch off and go in a daydream

In this head my thoughts are deep

Sometimes I can't even speak

Would someone be and not pretend?

I'm off again in my world

*My World – Avril Lavigne*

I knew when I first woke up that today was going to be a bad day. There were little things that just kept happening to confirm that suspicion. Because of that, I'd planned on going straight home after the last bell, but was reminded by a text from Caroline that we had cheer practice.

We were going through a routine when I felt a sudden sharp pain just above my heel. I fell to the ground, clutching my foot, cursing as I did so.

I could hear the other girls around me, and in the background, the new coach was yelling at someone to get back to practice. Matt was kneeling in the grass next to me a few seconds later.

"You okay?"

"I hurt my ankle. I think it's twisted."

"Let me see it."

I hesitated letting go of my foot. Matt chuckled and pulled my hands away by my wrists. He grabbed my calf and placed the heel of my foot on his knee, then gingerly touched all around my foot, ankle, and leg. Despite how gentle he was being, I hissed in pain when he poked a few spots.

"It's not broken. There's some bruising and swelling, though, so it might be sprained. Think you can walk?"

"I think so, yeah, but I might need help getting up."

He lifted me up, letting me lean on him as I limped my way over to the bleachers.

"Let me take you to the hospital."

"It's fine, Matty. I'd rather just go home and ice it."

"Not happening. I'm gonna go shower, and then I'll be right back." He said, his gaze locked on mine. He was holding my head in place by my cheeks. "Stay. Here."

He kissed my forehead and then hurried off. After a few minutes, he was back and carrying me away from the field, laughing at my protests.

"I hate feeling helpless." I said grumpily, once he'd set me down beside the passenger door of his pickup.

"You're not helpless, you're injured. Besides, I like helping the people I care about, so just let me help you."

We were entering the Donovan residence two hours later.

As it turned out, he was right. I'd sprained my ankle. It wasn't severe though. The doctor wrapped my foot and ankle, and gave me crutches just in case I needed them over the next few days.

I sat on the couch, observing what I could of my surroundings, while Matt went off after mumbling something I didn't quite catch.

"Here. Put your foot on this." He said when he came back, moving his coffee table closer to me and setting a pillow on it. I did as told, leaning back into the cushions.

"I also brought you some ice, water, Tylenol, and a blanket."

"Matthew Donovan, you are amazing!" I exclaimed, taking the offered medication.

"Bathroom's down the hall. Watch whatever you want to. I'll be back in a few."

"Wait. Where are you going?"

"Ah, I'm actually going to your place. Figured I'd bring you some clothes and stuff."

"You don't have to do that. Just take me home once this stuff kicks in."

"I told you, I'm taking care of you. So give me your keys and just rest."

I sighed and dug my keys out of my pocket, throwing them to him. He caught them without a problem and left me in his living room.

When he returned a half hour later, he had one of my carry-on bags slung over his shoulder. He pushed it under the table and sat down next to me, his arm resting on the back of the sofa.

"Hungry? I don't have much for food, but I'm sure I have something I can make. Soup, maybe?"

I laughed and settled into his side, bringing his arm to settle around my shoulders.

"I'm injured, not sick. How about we just order a pizza and make out while we wait for it to get here?"

"Sure, we could do tha–" He cut himself off. I couldn't help but giggle as his shock melted away. "Oh, you were joking."

"Mmhmm."

"About which part?" He chuckled.

"That depends. Which part do you want me to be joking about?" I winked at him.

I must have fallen asleep at some point, because the next thing I knew, Matt's phone rang.

"That was Jeremy." He explained after he hung up. "Vicki's at his place, and he thinks she's on something. Will you be okay here?"

"Yeah. I'll be fine." I told him, sitting up.

He stood up to pull his boots on, grabbing his keys and cell before coming back to the couch. I felt his lips on my forehead, something I'd gotten used to whenever we parted after spending time together. I smiled and pressed on his chest a little when he didn't immediately pull away.

"Go. Get your sister. I'll see you soon."
