I honestly have no excuse for updating this late...again.

I don't own twilight.

Chapter 21

School. It was the last thing on Bella's mind. She didn't even know how they got there in the first place. She tried to remember but she couldn't. And no matter how hard she tried, her mind just refused to work with her. That did not seem to bother Bella. She was content with the thought of her being there in the classroom, chin resting on her palm, as she stared out the window. She did not in the least care how she got to that position.

Bella looked outside her classroom's window. She had completely cancelled the noise of the bumbling fool of a human trying to lecture her about biology. The only things she chose to hear were the rhythmic beating hearts of her human classmates, the ticking off the clock, and the occasional scribbling of Angela Webber who sat beside her. To anything else, Bella was completely deaf to.

Her eyes moved from car to car just for the sake of distraction. Time moved far too slow in her opinion. It has just been barely ten minutes and she wanted nothing more but to get out. Actually the feeling settled the moment she sat down on her chair. Her eyes landed on a rusty, red, truck on the far end of the parking lot. Right. That's how. It suddenly came back to her. They came to school on that very truck. Jane had begged for another vehicle for them to use, but that was the best Seth could do on such short notice. They could have easily run the distance from their home to school without hassle, but they did have a façade to keep. And after what had happened between Bella and Alice, riding with the Cullens was out of the question. Jane was disappointed but she said nothing; Leah had a clue what had happened and she remained silent as well. It was Seth who did not exactly know what had happened. But he borrowed the car from a friend without questioning Bella when she asked him to find a new ride for them to school. He knew Bella would tell him when she was ready.

Bella's eyes went back to the confines of the classroom. The desk in front of her was empty. It was where Alice usually sat and Alice wasn't there. Why is she absent? A stray bullet of concern hit Bella. Bella frowned and exhaled. She had nothing to do with Alice, she told herself. Though, she knew she was wrong.

"I'm sorry I'm late," a familiar bell-like voice rang. Alice.

"Ah, how good of you to finally decide to join us, Miss Cullen," the professor in the white lab coat greeted, peering above the papers he was holding. He pushed his big, circular-framed glasses back up the bridge of his nose deciding to look at the late comer.

"Better late than never," Alice said, shyly. "I really am sorry, sir." Alice said looking at the man with the most innocent eyes, batting her eyelashes as well. It was the kind of look Alice always used to get away with whatever it was her problem was with her human mentors. And it always works. For both men and women, if I might add.

The professor's cheeks colored. He loosened his tie as he cleared his throat. "Well, better not make history repeat itself. Take a seat, Miss Cullen."

"Of course." Alice scanned the room for vacant seats. And as usual, her seat was vacant. Most Cullen seats were. No one ever dared to seat on any of their seats for some reason. Her eyes landed on Bella who was staring daggers at their oblivious professor who still had a rather flushed face as he desperately tried to rearrange sheets of papers to calm his heart down. She's jealous! Alice's heart would've skipped a beat if it could. She couldn't help the smile forming on her lips. A jealous Bella was both scary and adorable.

Blue eyes met gold. Alice giggled. Bella looked as if she was caught getting a cookie out of the cookie jar. Bella blinked twice when she saw Alice smiling at her. She swallowed and averted her eyes back to the window beside her.

Alice walked to the desk in front of Bella's as it was the only vacant one. She placed her bag on the empty seat and took out a notebook and a pen for props. She wasn't going to listen to any of this. She already had over a hundred of times and it was the same over and over again. She already had graduated more than she could count on both high school and college. This class was not in any way different.

The only difference this time, though, was that her mate was sitting right behind her. Bella. Alice had already forgiven Bella, believe it or not. How could she not? Sure she was hurt that Bella didn't remember anything –devastated, even– but it was also a kind of explained why Bella was different. Why she was hot and cold most of the time. At least I know all of this isn't intentional. Rosalie might think otherwise, but Alice would not have that. Because in that moment, before Edward, Jasper, and Rosalie came crashing in her room, before Bella left, Alice saw the truth in Bella's eyes. The same look those eyes gave more than a decade ago. That was when Alice knew her Bell was still there somewhere. The brunette was instantly forgiven.

"Alright," their professor announced. "Now that we're all here, I want you to pair yourselves up. We're going outdoors. Meet Mother Nature. So go get your pens and notebooks. I want you all to list down fifteen kinds of flora. And when you're done, it will be your job to study them further. That will be your assignment which will be due next week. Let's go!"

"Excuse me," Angela called their professor's attention. "Sir, we're an odd number. Can Alice join Bella and me?"

"Whatever floats your boat," their professor murmured in his coffee. "Now, go, go," he waved them away, "you're missing all the fun." Bella scoffed.

In the forest, Bella's predicament was no different. She was still very much preoccupied. She chose to be preoccupied.

Most of their classmates, boys, went deeper in the forest, some didn't even go out of the school, most stayed close to each other while studying the flora near the entrance of the forest.

Bella, Angela and Alice did their work somewhere in between, away from the larger group but not quite in the deep end of the forest. They could, though, but with Angela, it was best to stay within the school's sight.

Bella was the one lagging behind. Angela stayed in the middle stopping from time to time to crouch down and to scribble her notes down. Alice was close by, but she kept her distance in the front.

Angela was taking down notes when Bella caught up to her. She scribbled down the last of her notes and stood up. "Ow!" she hissed, grazing her forehead on a low branch as she stood up. Bella laughed. "And here I thought having an additional pair of eyes would make dodging things easier."

"It's not funny, Bella!" Angela tried touching where the branch had hit her. She winced.

"Here," Bella offered. "Let me take a look." Bella walked to Angela and examined her forehead. "You're bleeding." In the corner of her eye, Bella saw Alice stiffen.

"Shit," Angela cursed.

"There's not much blood. Its fine," Bella explained not really talking to Angela. Her eyes were looking at Alice. "Are you okay?" Alice nodded and smiled.

"Yeah," Angela nodded. "Yeah I'm fine. It stings a little, though"

"Do you have a handkerchief?" Angela handed her the handkerchief. Bella took it and carefully wiped the tiny drops of blood off. There wasn't much blood and she had just fed so Bella wasn't fazed at all. But the blood did smell good. She was more worried about Alice, though. "There. Be careful next time, four eyes," Bella joked handing Angela back her handkerchief.

Angela stuck her tongue out.

Think about it. Does it not make you wonder? What was missing? Jasper's voice echoed in her head. She pushed the thought away.

Biology was done, next was English and Bella was now even more distracted. After seeing Alice, all she could think of was Alice.

Bella, as usual, sat next to Angela near the window. Soon, other students came flocking in, taking their own respective seats. Emmett was one of them. He flashed Bella an apologetic smile and took the farthest seat on the opposite side of the room. He clearly wanted to say or ask something but he held his tongue.

Last, came their professor, an old lady with white, wiry hair. She started speaking in a shrill voice babbling about Hamlet. Bella zoned off again.

Does it not make you wonder? What was missing?

Think about it.

Think about it.

What was missing?

Does it not make you wonder?

Jasper's voice circled Bella's mind like hungry vultures hovering over her head and it was driving her crazy. The moment the bell rang, Bella sped out of the room faster than anyone and never came back to school.
