Chapter 20 I Will Never Give You A Son

"You want me to get a what?" Regina asked, her voice full of disdain from the words that had come out of Emma's mouth.

"A breast pump," she said.

"I am not a cow Miss Swan!"

"I didn't say you were. I'm just saying it would be easier for you during the nights. Jason could even feed her, that way you could get more sleep."

"Thanks for the suggestion but no thank you dear. I prefer the natural way."

"Suit yourself," Emma said. It was the next day since Regina shared her memories of a baby Henry with Emma. They were both sitting on her couch after a pretty intense magic lesson and now Regina was feeding Ivy with a baby blanket draped over her daughter and her breast. Emma didn't seem at all uncomfortable. She thought it was a natural and beautiful thing. She had only suggested the breast pump for the sake of Regina getting a full night's sleep.

"Can I hold her now?" Emma asked, already missing the baby. She had held her every chance she got.

"She's not done yet," Regina said just as the door open and before they knew it Henry walked in.

"Emma, can I..." he trailed off the moment he processed what he was seeing. "Oh my god, mom!" he exclaimed, his cheeks going red in embarrassment. He was like a dear stuck in the headlights and all Regina could do was laugh. He turned away, mumbling incomplete sentences before leaving the apartment in a rush. Emma's mouth hung open in shock and she snapped out of it at the sound of Regina's laughing.

"Stop laughing Regina! You just scarred our son for life!"

"Fine, I'll go talk to him," she said but Emma stopped her.

"No, I'll do it. He probably won't be able to look you in the eye."

Regina nodded, letting Emma go deal with this so she could finish feeding the baby. Emma got up and followed Henry out the door and into her mother's apartment.

"Hey, did Henry come in here?" she asked Snow who was sitting on the couch and folding laundry.

"No, is he ok?" she asked, her voice hinting a slight concern for her grandson.

"I don't know. He just saw Regina breast feeding his little sis."

"Well, he's not here," Snow said, the concern being replaced by an amused smile. Emma plopped down on the couch beside her with a tired sigh. Her magic lesson had worn her out and she didn't have the energy to be searching the whole damn town for that kid.

"Regina's here? I didn't see her car outside when I came in," Snow asked and Emma looked at her.

"She poofed here," she stated, entirely missing the point why Snow was surprised about this piece of information.

"Why? Besides your lessons, she never uses her magic for anything."

"Maybe she's too tired to drive."

"Well then why didn't she just walk?"

"I have no idea," Emma said and it was then that she had just realized something. "You know, I haven't seen Regina take Ivy out at all besides her backyard." With that being said both women grew quiet as the realization that Regina was afraid to take her baby outside hit them. It was then that the door opened and Regina walked in holding Ivy against her shoulder.

"Hey, did you speak to Henry?" she asked, naïve to the conversation that had just took place as she sat on the recliner.

"Uh, no he probably went into town," Emma said as she stood. "In fact I was about to go look for him. Do you want to come?"

"I didn't bring the car seat," Regina replied dismissively, avoiding Emma's gaze.

"It's ok, we can walk."

"No Emma, thank you but I'd rather not go." Emma looked at Snow who gave her a subtle nod, signaling her to go so that she and Regina could talk.

"Alright, well I'll call you later." Regina nodded and once Emma left Snow looked at her stepmother. She still looked so tired, maybe even more so than yesterday but she looked happy and her eyes were full of nothing but love as she held her daughter close to her.

"Regina?"

"Hmm," she replied, her gaze never leaving her cooing daughter.

"Regina, honey look at me please." At the sound of her stepdaughter's voice, Regina looked up in confusion.

"Snow, what is it dear?" she asked, her voice full of concern as she stood and sat beside the younger woman.

"Can I ask you something?"

"Of course."

"Have you taken Ivy out at all besides from your backyard and getting in the car?" That question wasn't what Regina had expected her to ask and for a moment she didn't know what to say. How was it that Snow knew when something was going on inside of her emotionally? Snow noticed Regina's hesitance to answer and gently placed her hand on her shoulder.

"It's ok," she whispered. "You know you could talk to me." She looked away for a second before meeting Snow's hazel gaze once more.

"It's just… I…" she stumbled before stopping to take a breath. She could do this. This was Snow she was talking to. Snow always had a way of making everything seem better. "I'm scared," she finally whispered.

"You're scared that the town will hurt her," Snow stated in realization, the truth becoming more clear to her. Regina nodded and Snow wanted to hug her but she knew Regina needed her space or she will emotionally retreat. Even after all this time Regina was still so afraid to talk about what she felt.

"I know it sounds silly and I can't keep her inside forever but what if someone attacks me to try to get to her. More than half the town are still so angry at me Snow."

"It's not silly," she said. "I understand and if I were you I'd be terrified of taking Ivy outside but you have your magic Regina. I know you prefer not using it but if anything then you need to protect yourself with it as long as you don't hurt anyone." Regina looked away, still so unsure of using her magic in public again and Snow tilted her chin so that she would look at her again.

"Promise me you'll use your magic to protect yourself and Ivy if you ever need to." The concern and fear of her stepmother and baby sister getting hurt shown so clearly in her eyes and Regina blinked away her threatening tears. It still shocked her that this girl could still love her and be concern for her after everything they had put each other through.

"I promise," she said quietly, her voice cracking just a little. Snow gave her a small smile, affectionately brushing the stray strands of dark hair away from her face.

"Emma made it clear to everyone that she'll arrest anyone who tries to hurt you, Ivy, or Jason. You'll be ok," she reassured her.

"You're right. It'll be ok," she said, trying to convince herself and after a lot of coaxing from Snow Regina agreed to take a walk to the diner to meet Emma and Henry. The moment they stepped outside of the apartment building Snow could see Regina's whole body tensing and she was extremely alert for anyone or anything that could be a threat to her baby. Snow placed her hand on the small of her back and Regina flinched, almost shying away.

"It's ok, I'm here and you have your magic," Snow reminded her and Regina nodded although she stayed alert anyway and held Ivy close to her chest. As they walked a few people did stare and some even had the decency to send Regina and Ivy a disgusted glare but Regina glared right back at them which sent them shrinking away and leaving her be. When they finally reached the diner, they didn't notice the outsider sitting outside as they walked by him. They didn't notice the dark look in his eyes or the small sinister determined smile on his lips as he thought of his revenge on the former Queen. Now that she had her baby he could finally carry out his plan.

"Come on kid, it wasn't that bad. Besides you didn't even see anything. She was covered with a blanket," Emma said, trying to calm her son. They were in a booth at Granny's. He had sent her a text that he was at the diner and so she met him here, his face pale and his eyes wild as if he had just seen a ghost or something. To be honest he looked as if he were going to be sick.

"She's my mom Emma. It's still gross!"

"Breastfeeding isn't gross. It's a natural and beautiful thing."

"But she's my mom!" he exclaimed as if that explained everything and Emma sighed in defeat.

"You knew she's been breastfeeding Ivy and it never bothered you before."

"That's because I didn't have to see it," he grumbled just as the door opened and Regina and Snow walked in. The whole diner went silent when they saw the tiny baby in Regina's arms. They could see the uneasiness on Regina's face and Snow placed her hand on her arm. She whispered something to Regina but they couldn't hear what it was from where they were sitting. Emma was impressed that Snow had convinced her to meet them. She could see Regina was still afraid of bringing Ivy. The silence was getting unbearable and just when Emma was about to rescue them Granny spoke up the moment she came out from the kitchen.

"It's about time you bring the little one," she said, approaching the nervous mother and everyone went back to what they were doing. "May I?" she asked and Regina's grip tightened on the baby. She was afraid to put her down in case anyone tried to hurt her but with Snow there, whispering that she could trust Granny, her defenses went down and she gently handed Granny the cooing baby.

"Hi there little one," Granny cooed as she gently rocked her.

"Oh my God Regina, she's beautiful," Red said as she too came out of the kitchen. Both were unaware of the hostile silence Regina was greeted with when she entered the diner. Red gushed at the baby over Granny's shoulder.

"Thank you dear," Regina said quietly, feeling herself starting to relax. She could trust them. They were friends of Snow and they were part of the few people in this town that had forgiven her. Once Ivy was handed back to her mother, Regina and Snow took their seats and waited for Red to come take their orders.

"Regina?" Emma asked hopefully, her eyes shining and Regina irritably rolled her eyes although there was a spark of amusement in those brown orbs as she passed Ivy to Emma.

"I have a feeling you're going to spoil her when she's older," Regina stated as Emma held her baby Aunt (which was still weird) and made faces at her.

"She loves her Aunty Emma."

"Actually, she's your Aunt mom," Henry stated and Emma shot him a playful glare. In her head she was the aunt because she was not going to be walking around calling this kid Aunt Ivy.

"Henry, you look a little pale. Are you ok?" Emma heard Regina ask and she looked up, noticing that Henry still looked disgusted from what he saw. He couldn't even look at Regina in the eye as she reached to feel his forehead for a fever.

"Yeah, I'm fine mom," he said when she pulled away and Emma couldn't help but smirk in amusement.

"He's still a little freaked out from earlier," she stated and Regina's face dawned in realization.

"Honey, breastfeeding is a part of nature," Regina explained and Henry groaned in embarrassment. Were they really having this conversation right now?

"Yeah kid but just knock next time. You were lucky you didn't see anything," Emma laughed and Henry turned red.

"Emma!" he groaned, not wanting to get those images of what he could have seen in his head.

"Well stop making fun of me of the time we walked in on my parents after I came back from the Enchanted Forest after the curse broke."

"Emma!" Snow exclaimed, suddenly becoming embarrassed herself as she felt Regina's questioning gaze on her.

"You and our son saw them…" Regina trailed off, not being able to finish that sentence.

"Don't worry mom we didn't see anything and it was a couple years ago."

"It's still the same thing!" Emma protested much like Henry had before Regina and Snow came into the diner.

"Alright, that's enough," Snow scolded them with a slightly amused smile. "We're changing the subject."

The ball was a disaster which ended with Snow storming to her room. As she greeted the different princes her age she had come across one that was annoyingly obnoxious and when they danced he became a little to handsy. When he wouldn't leave her alone she ended up stomping on his foot and running up the stairs. The commotion was enough to end the ball. Regina had saw the whole thing and the moment she saw that prince disrespecting her stepdaughter she felt this hot rage in the pit of her stomach for some unknown reason. She couldn't understand why she suddenly had this to need to protect the young princess.

She rushed to Snow's bedchambers to see Leopold, who had gone ahead of her, yelling at an hysterical Snow. She had never seen them like this. They were always so close and she could see the anger mixed with heartbreak in the King's gaze.

"Snow, dear I saw what happened and that boy…"she tried to say before Snow suddenly interrupted her.

"Don't try to comfort me!" she snapped in anger. "I told you…." She looked at her father and then at Regina again. "I told both of you I didn't want to have this ball. I want to marry for love. I don't want my future husband picked out. I knew something like this was going to happen and neither of you listened."

"Snow, sweetheart we are so sorry. We just…" Leopold started to say softly, his voice pained as he watched his daughter break down.

"You just what? Thought it be a good idea to just marry me off to someone like that prince? Why can't you two just listen for once!" Regina felt guilty at those words. She had listened but she didn't do anything.

"Snow…" she tried to explain but Snow shot her an angry glare.

"Don't!" she snapped. "Don't you dare comfort me. You are not my mother!" Regina was left speechless, her heart feeling as if it had ripped in two and she once again wondered when had she started caring but before anything else could be said Leopold decided to leave Snow alone.

"Come Regina," he said as Snow turned away from them, not wanting to look at them. He took his wife's hand, putting on a show of affection as he led her away. Once they were alone in the hall he let go and violently took her forearm, keeping her in place. His other hand possessively held her chin so she would look at him.

"I told you to talk to her Regina! You were supposed to make it better!"

"I did what you asked my dear husband. I talked to her but it doesn't mean she still wouldn't be angry." His grip tightened and she winced from the pain.

"This is why I married you Regina. You are supposed to fix things like this. You're supposed to be there for her when she needs her mother."

"That's just it!" she yelled, ripping her arm from him and taking a step back. "I am not her mother!" If he was shocked by her sudden outburst he didn't show it but she could see the anger in his eyes and could feel herself shrinking into herself. She waited for the usual smack in the face but it never came and instead he shook his head in disgust and violently led her to his bedchambers where he shoved her inside.

"You are to stay here until I return," he said darkly before he closed the heavy chamber doors and locked his Queen inside. Struck with fear, Regina started banging on the doors and yelling at him to let her out. She hated being trapped. She hated when he locked her in either her or his bedchambers. It scared her too much to even care what will happen if Snow were to hear her. She banged her fist against the heavy wood till the self-inflicted pain in her hands become too much and she sank to the floor in defeat.

Her chest heaved with heavy breaths, her hand tightly griping the door handle as she closed her eyes and tried to calm the storm of anger swirling inside her. Snow's words hurt. Leopold's words made her angry. The way he treats her makes her even more angry to the point where she doesn't even know who she is anymore. She could feel the darkness eating away at her each time he abused her. When she felt the single tear sliding down her cheek she opened her eyes and angrily wiped it away. This was no time to be weak so she stood and moved a few feet back. She concentrated on the heavy doors and tried to summon her magic. Rumplestiltskin hasn't taught her telekinesis yet but she was going to try. She needed to get out of this room.

She spent hours trying and unfortunately there was no result. All it did was take her energy and she tiredly fell to her knees in defeat. She knew he had gone to fix the mess Snow created but it shouldn't have taken this long. Maybe this was his way of punishing her for not doing her job with Snow. Just thinking about the words he said to her made her sick. How could she be this girl's mother when all she wanted to do was snap the girl's neck…

But then if she wanted her dead why did Snow's words hurt so much? When Snow had said she wasn't her mother, Regina had felt a sharp pain in her heart. She was conflicted and terrified and so so angry all at once and all she could do was stare at those wooden doors, waiting for her husband to come punish her.

He was drunk when he finally came into his bedchambers. Hours had passed since he dealt with the other royals after the disaster the ball turned into and when he entered he saw his Queen asleep on the floor. He had forgotten he threw her in here and he suddenly got a dark sinister idea. If Regina were to bare him a son then that child could automatically take over the kingdom and save his precious Snow from having to go through with an arranged marriage. He didn't like the idea of his daughter marrying someone she didn't love the moment she became of age but the kingdom needed to be aligned in order for the realm to prosper.

He never beats her. He's only violent when she fights him in bed. Sometimes he'll give her a good smack in the face when he thinks she deserves it but he never beats her until now. The alcohol clouded his judgment and he could care less. In this moment Regina was nothing to him. He approached her on unsteady legs and kicked her hard in the ribs. She woke instantly, crying out from the agonizing pain.

"Get up!" he yelled at her, his words slurring and she knew he was drunk. Her eyes shinned with fear and all she could do was stare up at him in disbelief. He's never beat her before not even when he drank but tonight he was heartbroken and he needed to forget… he needed to take it out on someone and that someone was Regina.

"I said get up!" he yelled as he grabbed a fistful of her dark hair and pulled her up. She cringed from the pain and she struggled to get away.

"Let me go!" she demanded, her voice angry. How dare he treat her like this! Her tone must have set him off because the next thing she knew he smacked her hard across the face. She didn't even have the chance to catch her breath when he suddenly pushed her back and slammed her against the wall. Her head and back hit the wall hard and his hand wrapped around her throat.

"I married you for one reason Regina! You are Snow's mother so act like it!" He was still angry with her outburst in the hall and his grip tightened around her neck, making her gasp for the air her lungs so desperately craved. "But I was only fooling myself," he continued in a calm voice. "You will never be Eva. You will never be as beautiful as her or as loving towards Snow." Those words hurt and she felt so disgusted with herself in that moment. A single tear streamed down her cheek and he loosened his grip just enough so that she could breathe.

"You will bear me a son Regina so that he could take over the kingdom instead of Snow. He will be the one to align our kingdom saving Snow from a loveless marriage." She froze at those words. She had never thought about having kids. She couldn't bear the thought of bringing a child into a life like this… where all he'll be seen as is a pawn. The King only wanted him to align the kingdoms so that his beloved daughter wouldn't have to. Anger suddenly boiled from the pit of her stomach and rushed violently through her whole body.

"I will never give you a son," she said in a low threatening tone, her voice shaking but at the same time so angry and dark. He held her gaze and she watched as his face contorted with rage. She didn't even see it coming and she cried out in pain when he balled his fist and struck her face. Blood rolled down her chin from her split lip from where he had punched her. He turned her around, restraining her with his body so that she was facing the wall. She let out a whimper at the harsh treatment and she could feel him hiking up her dress from behind. He was going to take her right there and she started to panic.

"Stay still!" he snapped as he pressed her harder into the wall with his body. More tears streamed down her cheeks and she could feel herself shaking out of fear.

"No, please no!" she cried and his hands suddenly restrained her wrists against the wall. She struggled but of course he was stronger. She didn't even realize he had pulled down his pants until he painfully entered her center from behind. She let out an anguished cry, desperately trying to get away from his deep violent thrusts. She closed her eyes, her cheek pressed against the cold stone wall as he spoke darkly in her ear.

"You will do what I ask my Queen or there will be consequences."

Something in the Queen seemed to have snapped that night. Isabella knew it the moment she had entered the chambers after the King had summoned her. Regina was sitting against the wall, her arms wrapped tightly around her knees. Blood was staining her lip and chin and she could see the deep bruise forming under it. It was her eyes that had caught her attention. They were dark. They were empty. She couldn't see any trace of the young Queen she had come to know.

"Clean her up," the King's drunken voice sounded from behind her and she had to suppress the anger she suddenly felt towards him. From the look of Regina's bruised chin and the red marks on her neck, she knew the King had beat his wife for the first time. She was disgusted at his actions and kept her gaze on the young girl instead because if she looked at him he would see the hatred she was feeling towards him in this moment.

Regina's gaze was fixed on some point in the room. She didn't even acknowledge Isabella or say a word as the doctor silently pulled her to her feet. The pain in her ribs from being kicked made her stumble and Isabella snaked her arm around her waist to help her stand. It wasn't until they were out in the hall and the chamber doors had shut behind them then Regina finally snap out of her trance. She let out a silent sob, the tears flowing down her cheeks and her body shaking from the trauma. She hurt all over and Isabella tightened her hold on the terrified Queen.

"I got you," she whispered as she led her to her bedchambers. "I got you Regina."

They made it inside and instead of leading her to her bed Isabella led her to the tub that she had the servants prepare the moment the King had summoned her. She sat Regina on a nearby chair and quickly started getting the dress off.

Regina cried, the realization of being beaten hitting her so suddenly. The manipulative words, she could take. The violent nights in Leopold's bed, she could barely handle but being beaten… It broke her in a whole new level. The anger and darkness that resided in her heart grew as each tear streamed down her bruised face. She suddenly felt the chilly night air against her skin and she realized Isabella had undressed her and was now pulling her to her feet. She helped her into the tub and Regina watched as the water turned crimson from the blood between her legs. The sobs stopped, the anger suddenly becoming darker. Seeing the change in the younger woman, Isabella reached out so that Regina would look at her but the girl angrily pulled away.

"Regina…"

"Get out!" she suddenly snapped. Leopold beat her because she was weak… because she couldn't fight back and she didn't want anyone to see her as weak, not even Isabella. She was ashamed and she was angry and she wanted to be alone. She didn't even care about the heartbroken look in the older woman's eyes.

"But your majesty, I need to examine your wounds…"

"I said get out!" she demanded, her eyes cold and so much like the Evil Queen she had yet to become. She stared at the wounded Queen, the shell of the girl she used to be before letting out a defeated sigh. She bowed her head in respect and left the room. When she was gone Regina let the tears fall once again but this time they were fueled by anger. She grabbed the washcloth and vigorously scrubbed the filth from her body. The words he had whispered and the demands he had gave her echoed in her head. The way he had beaten her and took her from behind like she meant nothing made the darkness in her heart grow.

She scrubbed and scrubbed but the feeling of his hands on her wouldn't go away and she violently threw the cloth in the water with an angry cry.
