Lauren watched Speed sleep as he lay in his hospital bed. She couldn't stop thinking about the letter he had written to her. She couldn't help but smile, and she couldn't wait to tell Brad's parents. It's amazing how a simple letter could help heal the pain she had been feeling; it's amazing how a simple letter could make everything fall into place. Lauren folded up the letter and carefully placed it in her purse.
The door to the hospital room opened. It was Patrick. He had taken another phone call from his mother. "I swear she worries too much sometimes. I told her Tim was fine, and we'd be home in a little while. I told her he was still asleep," Patrick said.
Lauren half laughed. "She's your mother. She loves you, Patrick."
"Yes. I know, but sometimes it gets to be a little too much." Patrick plopped down on one of the chairs in the room.
"Can you really blame her though after all that's happened?" Lauren asked standing up. She had to get up and walk around. Her legs were starting to cramp up.
Patrick looked down at his feet and said, "No. I can't blame her. I'd probably be the same way if I were in her position. It's just that I wanted to talk to you about stuff and she kept calling."
Lauren walked up next to Patrick and wrapped her arm around his neck. "We'll talk later. I promise."
The hospital room door opened and Alexx walked in with a smile. "How's our patient doing? Is he ready to go home?" she asked.
"Our patient is still sleeping," Lauren said walking over to Alexx.
"Well, I'm going to have to wake him up because I have to get home. The kids and Henry need help in the kitchen. For some reason nothing is turning out right, but I find that hard to believe," Alexx said grabbing a pen from her pocket. Alexx gently nudged Speed's arm. He didn't move. "Timmy, come on you need to wake up. It's time to go home." She nudged him again. This time he opened his eyes.
"Good afternoon, sunshine," she said with a smile.
Speed sat up and yawned. "How long was I asleep?" he asked.
Lauren walked over to the other side of the bed and sat down beside him. She said, "About a couple hours." She smiled at him and he smiled back. "How are you feeling?"
"Sore," Speed said.
"You think?" Alexx said giving him a motherly look. "It's time to go home, Tim. I'm going to give you one last checkup.
"I'm fine, Alexx. I don't need a checkup," Speed said running his finger through his dark hair.
Alexx gave Speed another motherly look and said, "You will not leave this hospital until you have one."
Patrick started laughing. "She told you, Tim."
Lauren gave Speed's hand a small squeeze and slid off the hospital bed. "Come on, let's go call your mother, and let her know we'll be leaving soon," she said to Patrick and then left the room.
Once Lauren and Patrick were out the room, Alexx began Speed's checkup. She took her stethoscope and placed over Speed's chest and the other in her ears and listened to his heart. "You ready to go home, baby?" Alexx asked with a smile.
"I was ready a week ago," he said flatly.
"How'd I know you were going to say that?" Alexx said as she wrote down a few things in Speed's chart. "I'm going to have you sit up so I can listen to your lungs. Speed sat forward. Every muscle in his body ached. "Take a deep breath for me Tim then exhale." He did as he was told. "Again… and one more time. All right, sounds good." Alexx went on to finish the rest of his checkup.
Just outside of Speed's room, Lauren had just finished her phone call with Barbara when she saw a familiar face, Dr. Stanley. "Hi, Dr. Stanley. Happy Thanksgiving," Lauren said cheerfully.
"Hello, Miss Wolfe, and Happy Thanksgiving to you as well. How is Tim doing?" he asked.
"He's coming home today. Alexx is just giving him one last checkup before we get to go home," Patrick chimed in.
Dr. Stanley smiled. "That's wonderful news. Well, I hate to run, but I have to go make my rounds. Happy Thanksgiving to you again, Miss Wolfe, and happy holidays too." They said their goodbyes, and Dr. Stanley disappeared down the hallway.
Lauren turned to Patrick and said, "Shall we go back in?"
"We shall," Patrick replied.
When Lauren and Patrick entered the hospital room, Speed was just finishing up with his release papers. He had passed his checkup with flying colors and was cleared to go home.
Lauren grabbed her purse, and headed down to the parking lot while Patrick helped Speed get his things together. Speed decided he wanted to wait and take a shower when they got back to Lauren and Ryan's place. He felt more comfortable there.
Alexx came back with the wheelchair a few moments later. "Here you go, baby. Let's get you home."
"I'm fine, Alexx," Speed said indicating he didn't want the wheelchair.
Alexx gave him that motherly look. "I don't think so, Timmy. There is no way you are going to walk from this room all the way down to the parking lot."
"I have to agree with Dr. Woods, Tim, and I'm pretty sure Lauren would too," Patrick said grabbing his brother's bag, and throwing it over his shoulder.
Speed sighed and gave in. "You're probably right." He plotted down in the wheelchair and waited for Alexx to push him out to the parking lot.
Outside, Lauren was about to get in her car when she heard man call her name. She turned around, and when she saw him her body filled with hatred. "What the hell are you two doing here?" Lauren asked ferociously. Pam's parents had arrived at the hospital.
"We just want to talk to Officer Speedle," Pam's father said. "It's the holidays now. We just want to see if he'll drop the charges. Our daughter isn't right. She needs help."
Lauren tossed her purse into the back seat of her car. She did not need this right now. "You're daughter almost murdered a police officer. It was proven without a doubt that there was intent behind your daughter's actions. She is not sick. She is disgusting, and no you cannot talk to him. And I don't care if it's the holidays," Lauren spat back.
"She needs help and if she's in jail she can't get that," Pam's mother pleaded.
"That's not up to me to decide. Now if you'll excuse me I have more important things to do," Lauren said seeing Alexx, Speed, and Patrick exit the hospital. "Oh and by the way, if you ever try and contact Officer Speedle, his family, his friends, or me again I will file a restraining order against you." With that Lauren got into her car and drove up to the pick-up area.
