Chapter 21: Breaking Point (Part 2)
Randy lay in a hospital bed soundly sleeping. His body needed time to recover from the large amount of blood loss thanks to Renee's stabbing. Hayley was thankful to Adalynn for telling her to continue pressure on the wound; otherwise, nine chances out of ten he would have died before he arrived at the medical facility.
"You should relax. He's going to be fine." Dean commented from the corner chair.
"Technically this is my fault. I provoked her."
"Renee is crazy. No matter what you said she would have eventually snapped."
Hayley turned to look at Adalynn's boyfriend. She studied his features and the way he spoke. She figured that her half-sister was the same way, personality wise. She wondered if she was just as optimistic as he was or if he was the perfect balance for her like Randy had been for her life two years prior.
The sound of heels clicking against the floor in the hallways perked her interest. The way the clicks came, it sounded as if the person was walking fast or jogging. Dean stood up from the chair and turned his head in the direction of the open door. Adalynn turned the corner and stepped inside the room. The sight of Randy laying unconscious was unsettling to her.
"How is he?" She asked softly.
"He will be fine, Addy." Dean replied hoping to ease her mind.
"Well that's good news..."
Adalynn closed her eyes, pushing the negative thoughts out of her mind. Remembering the last words Renee said to her before letting her go, she opened her eyes and looked directly at Hayley. The longing to have the answers consumed all other thoughts. Dean reached out, taking her hand into his own.
"Adalynn...there is...something you should know." Hayley started to say before stopping, hesitating.
"If this is about you being my half-sister, then Renee already spilled the beans for ya." Adalynn replied.
"I see...I'm sorry, I should have told you when I found out."
Hayley stared her sister in the eyes, hoping for a positive response from her; but there was nothing. Adalynn's face was completely stripped of all emotion. Dean had only ever seen that look one time in the past and that was the day her father left for good. "I didn't know anything; but when you came to the precinct and called Victor father, I knew that he had a life before me."
"That man is no father to me now. He left me in the hands of a psycho. I showed you the scar she left me with."
"I know. He hasn't been much of one to me either. He pretty much destroyed my happiness growing up."
Adalynn looked from Hayley to Randy. She now understood his reasoning for trying to get close to her. It was an attempt to bring them together. He had known all along who she was and what relation they had. A smile tugged at her lips, appreciating the effort Randy made for the sake of both of them.
"Randy knew all along who I was, didn't he?" Adalynn asked.
"I had suspicions for years that Victor had been hiding something from me. I told Randy everything while we were together; of course, my father had to ruin everything for me. It caused us to break up. I would assume he found out on his own. That's why he came to me and convinced me to come and tell you."
Hayley reached out and touched Randy's hand. There was no denying the feelings were still there between them. Adalynn could see it on her face the second she walked into the room. She was happy for both of them. She turned her head to look at the love of her life in the eyes. Dean smiled and simply nodded his head. Letting her know that it was okay to want a relationship with a sister she never knew about.
"Hayley..." Randy called out in a muffled whisper.
The trio looked over and saw Randy slowly opening his eyes. The instant his eyes connected with that of Hayley's, her whole world seemed so much more brighter. Adalynn stepped closer to him and sat down on the edge of his bed. "Addy...?" He questioned.
"Thank you...for bringing her to me." She replied looking back at her sister.
"You both...deserved to have family that cares about you."
Dean placed a comforting hand on her shoulder, indicating that Randy should have a moment alone with Hayley now that he was awake. Adalynn smiled as she stood up from his bedside. The couple walked out of the room, giving Hayley much appreciated time alone. Randy gingerly moved his hand out to touch her face.
"Are you okay?" He asked.
"I'm fine. You had me worried. I...I thought I had lost you forever."
"You didn't and when I get out of this bed, I'm going to spend all of my time making up for lost time with you."
Several tears rolled down her cheeks, stopping against his thumb. He struggled to get to a sitting position; but the second he got to where he wanted to be, he pulled her face closer to him. His lips crashed down upon hers. She clung onto the hospital gown he was still wearing. The familiarity of his kiss made the tears roll down her face quicker.
Adalynn looked through the window of the room. She smiled upon the seeing the display of affection. She was slowly starting to accept the fact that she had family that cared about her. Dean twined his fingers with hers. How could she ever forget about him? He was the closest person to her in almost every way.
"I need to thank you to." She stated.
"Thank me for what?" He questioned.
"For never giving up on me. No matter how many times I tried to push you away, you were still there for me."
Dean let out a small laugh. He knew exactly what she was talking about; but no matter what she thought, he never would have given up on her. She was his life and always would be. He lifted her head up by a fingertip to meet his gaze. "I love you. I never would have given up on you for any reason." He admitted.
"I love you to, and that's why I'm thanking you."
There was more than enough words passing through their mouths, so he opted for the better choice. He leaned in and gently placed his lips upon hers. His hand moved from her chin and slid down her neck to her hip, massaging the bare skin there. Embracing the woman that changed everything for him, he realized that he didn't have to be afraid to love her. He would love her for as long as she would let him no matter what happened around them.
