AN: I know it's a little shorter than the other chapter, but I wanted to stop it there otherwise I might've done the whole episode in one chapter. That being said, thanks for the reviews and enjoy!
Later that day, Layla woke up and felt a bit better and a little hungry.
"Grandma, I'm hungry."
Maggie came into her room. She sat down and looked at her granddaughter and noted that the color had returned to her face and that she didn't seem so green anymore.
"Do you think you can keep some chicken soup down?"
"I can try."
"Do you want to eat in here or out in the living room?"
"Could I eat in the living room and watch a movie?"
"What movie do you want to watch?"
"Ummm, Fantasia."
Maggie smiled as she knew that was Layla's favorite movie to watch when she was sick. Maggie got Layla up, put her on the couch, put the movie on for her, and then began to fix her some soup to eat.
Layla curled up with her teddy and watched as the orchestra prepared to play. Maggie came in with the bowl of soup and some saltines as well as some juice to drink. Layla sat up and crumbled the crackers into her soup and mixed it together. She ate slowly as she watched her movie. She'd take a bite and wait a few minutes before she'd take another. The movie was almost completely over when she finally finished the soup. She laid back down.
"All done?"
Layla nodded.
"Is it sitting okay?"
"Kind of. My stomach is full, but it hurts."
"You let me know if you have to throw up, okay?"
Layla nodded and watched the end of the movie. Maggie started it over and Layla smiled at her. She sat down and put Layla's head in her lap and stroked her hair. Layla sighed contentedly.
"How're you feeling, L?"
"Sleepy. I just ate some soup, so we'll see how that sits. Where are you?"
"At daycare. Mom dropped me off before going to work."
"Why?"
"You're sick and she didn't want me sick."
"Yeah, I understand that."
"What are you watching?"
"Fantasia."
"Fantasia."
She could sense William was grinning.
"What?"
"Nothing. I know you love that movie when you're sick."
"It's a calming movie."
"I know. I hope you feel better by the time we get home."
"Me too."
"I'm gonna let you take a nap. They're about to come feed me and then let me play on my mat."
"Okay, Will, I love you."
"I love you too. Get some rest."
"I will."
Layla yawned while watching Mickey make the mistake of animating the brooms to do his work and before the sorcerer returned she was asleep.
Later that night, Scully came home with William. She gets out and moves to get William out of his seat when she hears a woman.
"Leave us alone."
"I am not going to do this," the man says.
"Get away. Get away from us. Leave us alone."
"She's coming with me," he said as he moves around the car to the woman holding her baby.
"What are you doing?" she cried as he goes to take the baby from her.
Scully walks over.
"Do you need help ma'am?"
"No. Don't."
The man struggles with the woman.
"Hey," Scully said as the man got the baby and headed to the back of the car. He puts the baby in the car and the woman follows his every move.
"Don't take her with you."
"No. I'm not letting you have her."
"Do you need me to call the police?" Scully asked as she was worried about what was going on in front of her.
"Don't go. Don't go! Please!" the woman cried as the man sped off in the car.
Scully watched him go with the baby in the backseat and turned back to the woman.
"Ma'am? Are you alright?"
As the woman turns to Scully, she notices it was the same woman from the café earlier that day. The woman looks distraught and unsure of what to say or do.
"You can come up to my apartment and call the police to make a report."
"Okay, thank you."
Scully nodded as she went back to her car and got William out of his seat and headed up to her apartment with the woman following behind.
Layla heard her mother's key in the door. It opened to reveal her mother, brother, and a strange woman.
"Mama!"
Scully opened her free arm. Layla hugged her mother.
"Hey, baby girl, how are you feeling?"
"Better. I kept some chicken soup down earlier."
"Good! Where's your grandma?"
"I'm right here." Maggie walked in with her jacket in her hand.
"Thanks for staying with her Mom."
"No problem at all. I need to go though."
Maggie kissed her granddaughter, grandson, and daughter as she headed out the door. Scully looked to the woman and pointed to the corner where the phone was.
"Come on in. The phone's over there."
The woman came in, but didn't move toward the phone. She watched Scully with William and Layla watched her.
"I don't know if this is such a good idea. Making out a police report."
Scully laid William in the bassinet and Layla stuck next to him while her mother spoke with the woman.
"Will, is she okay?"
"I don't know yet. She hasn't shown anything so far, but that doesn't mean she's okay or not."
"Keep a lookout, okay?"
"Always."
"Well, you've obviously got a problem. I saw you this morning at the café. Is he your husband?"
The woman looks away sadly.
"Yeah."
"It's okay. I understand. I mean, it's hard enough to care for a child or children in my case."
"You don't have anyone, do you?"
"No, but I wish I did."
Scully looked down. Layla wondered why she lied about Daddy. Her mother always had her daddy. She guessed it must be a privacy thing.
"Maybe he'll come back," the woman said with a small smile.
Scully looked at the woman with a smile on her face.
"Do you have anywhere to go?"
"No," the woman answered as she shook her head.
"I'm going to get you a blanker and something hot to drink, all right?"
"Thank you."
"My name's Dana." Scully extended her hand.
"Patti."
The woman grasped Scully's hand and they shook. Scully went into the hall to grab Patti a blanket. Patti moved over to the couch and sat down. She looked over at the little girl watching her and smiled.
"What's your name?"
"I'm Layla and this is my baby brother, William."
"He's a handsome boy and you're a beautiful girl."
"Thank you. Do you have any kids?"
"I do. A baby girl named Joy."
"Where is she?"
"Her daddy took her."
"Why?"
"I don't know. I didn't want him to, but he did."
"I'm sorry."
Patti looked at the little girl. She couldn't believe the depth of understanding that she saw in Layla's eyes.
"Where's your father?"
Layla looked away.
"He's gone?"
Layla still didn't answer.
"I understand that you don't want to talk about it. There's a lot I never want to talk about too."
Layla looked at the woman.
"Will, can you see anything she doesn't want to talk about?"
"Yeah, something about her baby, she's like me."
"What do you mean?"
"She has powers like me and it scares the lady. Do I scare you with my powers? I know Mom gets scared when I use them."
"No, people just don't understand how special you guys are. It's different, but it's a good different."
"I won't ask about your dad, okay?"
Layla nodded. Scully came back into the room with a blanket and set it on the couch.
"Layla, did grandma already feed you?"
"Yes, ma'am. I had soup and crackers."
"Okay. Patti, are you hungry?"
"No, thank you, I'm fine."
"Okay. I've got to feed William. Layla, go take a shower and get ready for bed."
"Okay, Mommy."
Layla got up and kissed William's forehead and he cooed when she did and she smiled. Then she went to take her shower.
"She's such a sweet girl."
"That she is."
"She seems to be going through a lot though."
"We all are. Do you need anything?"
"No, I'm fine."
"I'm gonna fix some cocoa."
"That sounds great."
Patti smiled.
Scully went into the kitchen to fix William's bottle and the hot cocoa. After she'd finished, she fed William while she and Patti talked over hot cocoa. Layla came out and kissed her mother and brother good night and with a smile to Patti, Layla went to bed. Scully finished feeding William, burped him, and bathed him. She got him ready for bed and laid him down. She went back to Patti and cleaned up the mess.
"Do you need anything else? Pillows or anything like that?"
"No, I'm fine, thank you so much for letting me stay here."
"You're welcome. Good night, Patti."
"Good night, Dana."
Scully went to bed. Patti laid on the couch and got comfortable. Her mind raced about everything that she'd seen and heard since her baby girl had been born. She took a deep breath and fell asleep.
The next morning, Patti woke before everyone. She went into Scully's room and turned off the baby monitor. She went and picked up William and held him to look at.
Scully's phone began buzzing on the nightstand. She grabbed it and answered it.
"Hello."
"You awake?" It was Doggett.
"Yeah. I just laid down. What time is it?"
"6 am. Agent Reyes and I just tailed a car onto your street. We watched a guy go into your building. We're guessing a guy you've got no business with."
Scully grabbed her gun and got up. She went into the living room.
"You there, Agent Scully?"
Scully sees Patti holding William. She trains her gun on the woman, now suspicious of her motive.
"Put him down! Now!"
"Oh my God."
"Put my baby down."
Patti put William down and put her hands up, surprised of Scully's actions. Scully kept her gun trained on the woman.
Layla woke up to the sound of her mother yelling. She got up and ran into the other room. She saw her mom holding a gun on Patti and then she noticed the door handle beginning to turn. That's when she heard a scuffle outside the door. She went to her brother and picked him up. She returned to the spot behind her mother. Just then banging sounded on the door.
"Agent Scully!"
The door opened and Reyes was standing there with Doggett behind her and he was restraining a man.
"Agent Scully, do you know this man?"
Scully looked at the man and noticed it was the same man from last night.
"I wouldn't think so. Not with him trying to pick his way into your place."
Doggett held up the lock picks to show Scully. Scully looked at them and him. She let Reyes in to handle Patti and moved Layla and William away from them. She knew it was time for answers and she wasn't going to stop until she got them.
