Author's notes: Thanks once more to Mossib for her review, and to everyone who's reading this story.
Nick looks at Jenny as her face pales, he gives her a quick smile to reassure her and turns his attention to Hewitt.
"I can't say I return the pleasure and I request that you put the gun away."
Hewitt's smarmy smile stays in place.
"And I request that you put your hands on the table."
Nick's trying hard to remain calm and steady. He pulls his hand out of his pocket and places both on the table.
"How did you find us?"
Nick looks again at Jenny, he can see the fear in her face.
"It's going to be all right Jenny."
Hewitt's smile widens.
"Is it?
He turns to Jenny.
"Your boyfriend here is a bit cocky, I enjoy bringing down the cocky ones the best."
He turns back to Nick.
"To answer your question, I was being kept informed of everything that happened to Jenny. I know she didn't order coloured pencils and when she wanted to buy something from a lingerie store I knew something was up and ordered her followed, suspecting she would lead me straight to you."
He looks at Jenny again and states sarcastically.
"She's such a good girl"
His voice becomes laced with anger.
-"Except when she's meeting ex-boyfriends."
Nick pushes down the anger he feels and Hewitt, swaps hands with the gun, still keeping it pointed at Jenny and then drapes his arm around her shoulders. Jenny goes rigid at the move. Nick moves the attention back to him.
"I'm not her ex-boyfriend, we love each other and she doesn't want to be with you."
"Sometimes, Nick, people don't always get what they want."
"She's not going with you."
"I've had enough of this let's go."
Nick stays where he is and looks Hewitt in the eyes.
"I'm not going anywhere and neither is Jenny."
He feels satisfaction when he see anger fleetingly cross Hewitt's face before he rearranges it back into a smile.
"I would suggest you don't be difficult."
Nick lets a small smile play on his lips.
"I'm not being difficult, I'm stating the truth. What are you going to do if we don't go with you? Shoot us? Here in the middle of a busy coffee shop, with too many witnesses for you to get away with it."
Hewitt rewards Nick with a look of concern crossing his face, robbing him of his self-assurance.
"You should've waited until we left. Until we were in a less public place."
Hewitt laughs but is lacking sincerity.
"I'll shoot right here if you don't stand up now!"
"I'm not going anywhere and neither is Jenny. I suggest you put that gun away and walk out of here, and whoever else you've brought with you. I suggest you do it soon."
Nick can see that Hewitt is struggling to contain his anger, his voice is quiet and full of venom.
"I suggest you get up from this table and come with me now. My boys are just going to rough you up a little, but if you don't I will kill you, maybe not now, but I will kill you."
This frightens Jenny.
"Nick, perhaps it better if we go."
"See, Jenny knows what's best, she understands what I'm capable of."
He moves his hand from her shoulder and reaches around and strokes the side of her face with a finger. Tears loom in her eyes.
Nick leans forward.
"I understand what you're capable of and you're not hurting Jenny."
"Your boyfriend thinks himself the great protector."
He turns back to Nick.
"I admire your guts, even if they're misguided and going to get you killed."
Jenny's bodyguard appears at the table.
"Boss, we need to get out of here – cops."
The bodyguard disappears towards the back of the café, Nick looks up at the front and sees some cops heading his way. Hewitt looks too and removes his arm from around Jenny and grabbing her arm pulls her out of the seat and holds the gun to her head stopping the cops in their tracks, They pull out their guns as the patrons dive for cover.
"Put the gun down sir and let the lady go. You don't want to make things worse. Right now things are simple but if you kidnap her or shoot her, things will get a lot more complicated."
"Just stay back."
The cop turns his attention to the trembling Jenny, tears rolling down her face..
"Are you all right Miss?"
Jenny's too scared to reply. Nick's looking on in horror at this turn of events.
"I'm going to make my way to the back door. Do not attempt to follow me. Do you understand?"
"Sir.."
Hewitt shouts, making Jenny jump,
"DO YOU UNDERSTAND?"
The cop backs off a little.
"Yes Sir, we understand."
Hewitt smiles.
"Good."
Hewitt starts to back away and Nick act instinctively, not asking himself if it's the right thing to do, he just can't let Hewitt leave with Jenny.
He sticks his foot out and Hewitt trips backwards over it, he loosens his grip on Jenny from the shock of falling and Nick reaches out and grabs her, pulling her towards him so she doesn't go down with Hewitt. The cop reacts quickly and has the gun in Hewitt's face before he has time to recover. Jenny's clinging to Nick, her head in his chest, crying, not daring to look at what's happening. Nick's holding her close and stroking her hair as he looks on. When Hewitt's handcuffed and marched away, he leans close to her and kisses her hair.
"It's all over Jenny."
