Abby POV
It had been a week since my crazy dream about Disney World.
Well, at least, I keep trying to convince myself it was a dream. But yet I was still here, laying in a bed, getting texts from the other DHIs, counting the tiles on the hospital ceiling, and lacking in an arm.
I don't know why I was counting the ceiling tiles again. By now, I knew the exact number. Exactly 20. But it was my only form of amusement in the godforsaken room.
16 17 18 19 20.
I had finished my counting. I was about to start it for the fifth time in this hour when a thought popped into my head.
In this entire week of hell, I hadn't bothered counting the tiles on the floor! I quickly sat up and looked over the edge of my bed.
1...2...3...
I stopped and groaned. This was the most exciting thing to happen to me?! My phone buzzed, and my eyes slid over.
One new message from BLONDIE!
Jade POV
Okay, okay, so I hadn't told them about the fairly thing yet. But who can blame me?! This was some intense stuff! And of course I have gotten close to telling them, but I always chicken out. So when I entered the Frozen Marble ice cream shop, I had a whole thing planned in my head.
But once I saw the rest of the DHIs, all that came out was a squeaky "HEY!"
I slid into the booth next to Kyle and peeked over his shoulder to look at his phone. He was texting Abby. Or, as his contact name for her said, COWGIRL!
"Really? Cowgirl?" I chuckled. He shrugged.
"Apparently I'm blondie in hers so whatever. I'm just telling her we're meeting at Frozen Marble again."
"I feel bad for Abby not being here. Sammi too," Carmen grumbled. Ever since the night in Disney World, Carmen visited Abby in the hospital every day. They seemed to have gotten really close really fast. And we have been texting Sammi, but haven't seen her since that night for some reason.
"So it's been a week since we "crossed over", as the college kids like to call it," Flynn tried to reel our conversation back to the topic at hand.
"I'm starting to not be scared to fall asleep anymore," Lola added. "I wonder if it was just a dream?"
"How could it be?" Prick asked. "We all still know each other. We still have contact with the college kids. And Abby's arm is still...metallic."
"Not to mention I can still do the weird weapon thing," Jason lowered his voice to a whisper, leaning on his elbows over the table so we can all hear. "The chain scythe thing."
"Same," Lola added.
"Speaking of weird, mystical, unexplainable powers..." I started, but trailed off. Everyone turned to me, confused. Oh god, Jade, tell them. Tell them now. This is your chance.
My chest tightened. I just wanted to scream to the world "I AM A FAIRLY! I KNOW EVERYTHING ABOUT ANYTHING AS SOON AS I TOUCH IT!"
Instead, I said; "We should talk about Maleficent."
"She does have weird powers, doesn't she," Eliza nodded, leaning back into the booth. "But what about her, Jade?"
And the attention was back on me. Great. "I HAVE POWERS TOO, GUYS! I KNOW AMAZING THINGS! I KNOW AMAZING PEOPLE!"
But all that came out of me was; "How did she know Sammi?"
"I had been thinking about that too," Ryenn said. "Who remembers that sheet we found a week ago?"
Everyone instantly turned to Tyler, who shrunk down in his seat. "The one with our names on it?" he whispered. "Uh, yeah, kind of."
"What was her secret again?" Ryenn asked.
"It said something about her m-mother," Tyler shrugged. After Disney, all week he had gone back to his quiet, stuttering self. I kind of wanted to see him be that confident genius we saw that one night. But I guess he was pushed then to be someone he wasn't, and he had no reason to be pushed to be it again.
"Who IS her mother?" Eliza asked. I bit down on my tongue. Be quiet, Jade! Don't spill other people's secrets! Just focus on your own for now.
"Who knows," Flynn shrugged. "What I want to know is when will we "cross over" again? WILL we cross over again?"
"We should talk with the college people," Carmen said.
"Specifically Philby," Ryenn said. "He seemed like the smart one out of them all. Who wants to text him?"
Eliza raised her hand, already pulling out her phone. She typed rapidly as a waiter came up to us and put down a single bowl of strawberry ice cream. My eyes furrowed in confusion.
"No one had ordered ice cream, right?" I asked. Shaking heads from everyone. I licked my lips and reached down, gently touching the side of the bowl.
"Could you give those children over there a bowl of strawberry ice cream and tell them it's from me, please? I'll pay," an old woman asked the waiter.
"Of course."
I pulled my hand away from the bowl before anything could look too suspicious. I looked to our left and sure enough there was the old woman, sitting in a booth alone.
"This came from that lady over there," the waiter said, pointing at the woman before walking away. The old woman looked up at us, winked, and looked back down at her newspaper.
"Why would she get this for us?" Kyle whispered.
"Sh," I shushed him, tilting my head back into her direction to direct everyone to look at her. Only a few people understood my motion. Tyler, Ryenn, Carmen, and Eliza glanced over at the woman. She pointed at the ice cream, then quickly looked back down at the newspaper. We all turned back to the bowl of ice cream, that had started to melt. The sprinkles floated in a half-solid half-liquid bowl of mush. Then, we all sucked in a collective gasp when the sprinkles started to form words.
Hello.
Our heads snapped back up to the old woman, who stared at her newspaper, refusing to look up at us. I looked back down at the bowl.
We can't talk here. The sprinkles spelled out.
"What...?" Kyle muttered from beside me. The sprinkles broke apart and formed new words.
Outside. The sprinkles burst and moved again. By pay phone.
We heard a rustling sound and we all looked back at the woman. She was handing her money to the waiter, thanking him, and standing up. Her eyes flickered over to us but showed no other signs of suspicion as she folded up her newspaper, lifted her purse, and left the ice cream shop.
"What?!" Kyle whispered again.
BY PAY PHONE! The sprinkles changed into capital letters.
"Who is that woman?" Tyler asked all of us. The sprinkles, seemingly hearing him, moved again.
I'm Wanda. Now come outside.
