Chapter 21: Freckles
He stared in the mirror at his face and the dots that were across both cheeks. What were they and why were they there?
His brothers caught him staring and laughed at him about it. Raph even teased that maybe he would get even uglier if he kept staring at the mirror.
Mikey hated when his brothers said things like this. It really hurt and he didn't understand why they had to laugh at him.
He went to his father's room and knocked on the door. Splinter told him to enter and he did so.
"What is wrong, my son?" Splinter asked his youngest son.
"Daddy, what are the spots on my face and why do I have them?" he asked.
Splinter smiled down at his youngest son. "They are called freckles," he answered.
"Okay, but why do I have them on my cheeks?"
"Because you are special," his father answered.
Mikey's blue eyes brightened. "Really?" he asked.
Splinter nodded. "Yes, you are special, Michelangelo. Does that make you feel better?"
"Yeah, it does," Mikey answered. He left his father's room and went into the living area where his brothers were watching TV.
"Hey, Spot, what took you so long?" Raph teased.
"Daddy says I gots freckles because I'm special," Mikey boasted.
"You are not!" Raph scoffed.
"I am too. Daddy said so and Daddy never lies."
"He's right, Mikey," Leo said. "You are special and I really like your freckles."
"Thanks, Leo," Mikey said.
That night, Mikey felt better because of what Splinter said. He definitely was special and he wasn't ever going to forget it.
