"So, what does he look like now?"
"I'm blind Su. I don't know what he looked like to begin with."
Su rested a hand on her bulging stomach as she waited outside her nephew's school with her mother. "So-"
"Su, you need to relax."
"I'm sorry. I guess I'm just nervous."
"Why are you nervous?"
"Umm, no reason."
Toph tapped her foot on the ground in annoyance, at having her daughter not face her head on. If there was one thing Toph drilled into her kid's heads, it was to face their problems. "You're nervous about what Lin has to say, aren't you?"
Su let out a sigh. "Yeah. I looked up to her as a kid, even if it didn't seem like it and I feel like I let her down by starting a family so soon."
Toph rested a firm hand on Su's shoulder and let out a soft laugh. "Kiddo, you are married, you're building a city and you're starting a family, all in that order. I don't think she is going to be upset. But trust me when I say we are both pissed that you didn't tell us you were married. That wimp of a husband of yours doesn't have the guts to even face me."
"It's for that very reason I told him to stay home. I hope to have more kids in the future. I can't exactly do that if you kill my husband."
The school bell rang and the doors flew open to let out rampaging students. A six-year-old Hakoda Beifong ran full speed into his grandmother's leg and fell down with an oomph "Still trying to control that airbender speed I see."
Quickly standing up, the young airbender grabbed Toph's hand and tried to pull her in the direction of his home. "Uh-huh, let's go, I have homework and training come on."
"What? You're not going to say hi to your aunt Su?"
He looked up at the woman he had seen in photos, standing next to his grandma and gave her a curt nod. "Nice to meet you, let's go."
"Chief Beifong!"
Su froze in place at the sound of the familiar voice. It was one that all Beifongs associated with evil. "Miss Haiko, what can I do for you today?"
The scarcely thin, elderly woman sauntered up to them, cold hard glare set in place as she made eye contact with all three of them. "Hakoda was bending in my class again."
"Well, did he finish his work?"
"Yes."
"Was he disrupting other students?"
"No."
"Did he use it to conduct anything illegal?"
"No."
"Then I don't see a problem." Slinging her grandson's backpack over her shoulder, Toph ushered her family away from the school quickly, leaving a seething Miss Haiko behind.
"I can't believe she's still alive and teaching primary school no less. I swear I felt the baby try to get away from her." Su rubbed her stomach reassuringly before turning her attention to the nephew she hadn't seen in years. "Are you excited to have a cousin Hakoda?"
The young boy glared at the pavement. "I don't want anything to do with babies."
"Be reasonable Lin!"
"I am being reasonable! We've been trying nearly everyday, for the past three years and I want a break!"
Tenzin's face began to turn red with anger and frustration at the woman standing before him. "Don't be selfi-"
"Oh shut up! I am going to be selfish and you know why? Because I am sick and tired of just lying there. I feel used Tenzin. You aren't thinking of me anymore. I'm the one putting my career on hold, I'm the one putting my body under strain and I will be the one taking care of the child years after it's born!"
"If you're so worried about all this, maybe you should have used protection before having Hakoda!"
Lin felt her muscles tense up at his hurtful words. Squinting her eyes, she gave him her best glare. "Get out of my house. You can come back when you realise the hurt behind the words you have just spoken."
The two adults turned towards the doorway to see Toph, who had her hands clasped tightly over Hakoda's ears, with Su. Lowering his head in shame, Tenzin pushed passed them and closed the front door loudly.
Holding back the tears, Lin lowered herself down to her son's level and pulled him in for a tight hug, which he gratefully returned. "Are you and dad going to be okay?"
"I hope so badgermole. Go on upstairs and finish your homework. I'm making noodles with leaks and chicken-hog for dinner tonight."
"Can I use your study?"
"Of course." With a final squeeze, she let Hakoda go and stood back up.
"Lin, are you alright?" Her mother's words opened a floodgate and Lin finally broke down.
"How is she?"
"Exhausted. I have half a mind to kill Twinkletoes ju- you know what? He doesn't deserve to be called that. Twinkletoes wouldn't have acted like this. Are you sure you're alright to cook?"
Pulling a pot out of the cupboard, Su put it on the stove and ignited the flame. "Of course. I cook for Baatar all the time."
"Were any of those meals edible?"
There was a long pause before the young earthbender spoke. "Take out?"
"Take out. You may want to consider getting a chef."
