Chapter Twenty-One: Heart to heart talks.
Madam Pomfrey insisted on keeping the boys in the hospital wing for the rest of the weekend. They didn't complain, but Harry wouldn't let her throw away the shattered remnants of his Nimbus Two Thousand. Jack couldn't blame him either, even if he could fix his staff he knew where Harry was coming from, it's like: as if he lost one of his best friends.
They both had a stream of visitors, all intent on cheering them both up, but manly Harry. Hagrid sent Harry a bunch of ear-wiggly flowers that looked like yellow cabbages and Jack a quill made from one Buckbeak's feathers and his own sketchbook with a note saying: 'So you don't get board and freeze anything. And keep away from your brother's you have your own now.' Ginny Weasley, blushing furiously, turned up with a 'get well' card she had made herself for Harry, which sang shrilly until Jack had enough and froze it shut. The Gryffindor team visited again on Sunday morning, this time Wood was with them, who told Harry, in a hollow, dead sort of voice that he didn't blame him in the slightest. Ron and Hermione only left Harry's bedside at night. But the biggest surprise was when in one of the rare moments that Ron and Hermione weren't there and Harry had only just woken up was the visitor talking to Jack.
"Come off it Draco, it wasn't that big of a deal, I just answered his question, just not the way he wanted me too."
Draco Malfoy was talking to Jack, Harry couldn't believe his ears, a Gryffindor and Slytherin both being friendly to each other. He opened his eyes just a slither to see both were sitting on the bed facing each other, Jack was sitting at the head and Malfoy was sitting on the end, both cross-legged, he could tell because Jack was wearing a blue loss fitted top and Malfoy was in his black robes, but every thing was a blur for he didn't have his glasses on.
"I don't know if Sev… Snape wanted to be amused or insulted" Draco shock his head then looked a Jack "but it true right, what they're saying?" asked Malfoy.
Jack sighed "Yes, if it wasn't for being Muggle-born I'd be shearing dorms with you. Look if you don't believe me, I'll quote what the hat said"
"Alright"
"' Your cunning and you wish not to be alone and to have friends, so you can be a Slytherin, but you aren't a pure blood so you may have trouble in that house'"
"Wow" Draco gave a chuckle "So you really are a 'Snake in Lions clothing'"
Soon after Draco had left Jack faced Harry's bed.
"I know your awake Harry."
Harry sighed and sat up. He didn't look at Jack he just looked down at his hands he still hadn't put his glasses on. 'Wow he looks more like his mum than his father with out his glasses' thought Jack.
"What to you see?" asked Jack.
"What?"
"What do the Dementors make you remember?" Jack sighed "They make people remember they're worse memory, so what do you see?"
"What do they make you see?" Harry shot back not wanting anyone to know, what he saw, well heard when the Dementers are around.
"Not see, feel"
Harry faced Jack reaching for his glasses and putting them back on. "What?"
"They make me relive how I drowned, I feel the water filling my lungs, people say drowning is one of the best ways to go." Jack shock his head. "Here, let me start at the being on that memory."
Harry shifted into a sit in a more practical position.
"The ice my sister and I are skating on cracks but only under her, the ice I'm on is thicker, she looks to me, I'm the older one I'm meant to make things better, I've taken my skates off, I'm on the ice bare-footed. I tell her I know she's scared but were going to have fun instead. I tell here were going to play hop-scotch like we do every day." Jack gives a small smile. "I take three steps towards thicker and safer ice, I long stick with a hocked end kinda like my staff is laying not to far away. On the second step a pretend I almost lose my balance to make her laugh, the last time I heard it. I've made it I tell her it's her turn.
"One, she takes one small step the ice cracks again, she looks up worried, 'that's it' I tell her I now have the stick in my hand, two; again the ice cracks, three; I hook the sick around her wast and pull her towards me. The movement sends me back onto the thin ice. We don't notice until I go to stand and walk back towards her."
Harry sucks in a deep breath of air, eyes wide
"The ice gives way, I fall. The last thing I hear is my sister calling out my name worried. I'm under the ice, it's so cold my body gives up, I can't get back up, the water replaces the air in my lungs, it hurts, it's like a fire is in my chest because the water is so cold. It's cold, it's dark and I'm scared.
"That was my last moments as Jackson Overland, when I awoke all I could remember was my name was Jack." Jack said his eyes were closed and a few tears were running down his cheeks, "and you know the worst part I can't even remember her name."
Harry looked at the boy across from him, the boy who has lost every thing even his own name and still can joke and have fun, make do with what the world throws at him.
"My Mum."
"What?" Jack looked up.
Harry sighed, if Jack could tell someone he only just met, sort of, he could too. "I hear my Mother, I hear her last moments alive, her attempt to save me from Voldemort, and his laughter before he killed her."
"You're having nightmares aren't you?" Jack asked.
Harry nods but doesn't say about what. "It doesn't matter."
"Yes it does, it side-affect" Jack reached for the small golden bag that Sandy gave him. "Tonight we both use this, it helps with nightmares, Sandy's own creation, we don't call him the Sandman for nothing"
Harry can only nod he know Jack will just give him some anyway.
