A/N: Hello all! I know it has been years, but honestly I had lost my muse and interest in writing for a while and I just got busy with school and work. So busy in fact that I will be graduating from University very soon. Anyway, I got my muse and the love for this story back and I wanted to give you guys the ending this series deserves! I have maybe like two more chapters after this one, or who knows I may get another idea! For now, I want to give this a proper ending. I hope you enjoy and are still interested in this story! Thank you to all those who to this day still have been messaging me about it! Please let me know what you all think, I would greatly appreciate it.
Now, quick note, in the beginning I swtiched to a third person pov just to show you guys something new and because I wanted to establish a relationship I hadn't explored until now. However, then we get back to Violet's POV.
The evening rain clouds loomed over Gotham City as Audrina made her way across the street to the little hole in the wall Italian restaurant. She was surprised to see that it still remained after so many years. It flooded her mind with so many memories that seemed to be from a million years ago. Years ago when she used to date Jim Gordon. It was funny how things turnedthings turned out years later. To think that they would see each other again under such circumstances was something they never had imagined. Then again, that was life and there was no assurance of what would happen next.
Jim Gordon waited patiently for Audrina Preston, a good friend and once lover, to arrive. He pushed his thick rimmed glasses further up his nose while skimming the menu, though it was just an excuse to keep his eyes away from watching the door. Jim felt ridiculous every time the bell chimed because he felt his heart jump in his chest. He could not help but wonder why he was reacting like this. Of course he had seen Audrina in social settings before, however her husband was always near by. Which is why he was surprised to have received a phone call from her asking him to meet him for dinner tonight.
The door chimed once again and Jim could not resist the urge. His heart seemed to have reached his throat when his eyes met hers. They were still just as intense as they had been many years ago when he had first met her at her family's estate. When he had foolishly suspected that she had ordered the hit on Thomas and Martha Wayne. Goodness, how it seemed like a lifetime ago.
"Hello James," Audrina slipped off her black coat as Jim stood and pulled out her chair. She never had called him Jim and he only allowed her to call him James. "It is good to see you again and under much more calmer circumstances."
Jim couldn't help but chuckle. They had been caught up in the windstorm of Bruce Wayne's funeral and helping Violet cope with the loss that they had placed all other things on the back burner.
"It is something I would have never thought to see, but it is good to see you, Audrina," Jim agreed and looked straight into her eyes, they were so blue and so reminiscent of their past life together. It had seemed like a lifetime ago when he had first met her and Violet. "How is Violet doing?"
Audrina's eyes shifted toward the window and she seemed to be contemplated her answer. Violet was not herself lately, but she could see that her niece was trying to put on her best face. Her eyes betrayed her, even when she laughed with Robert or Victoria at dinner last night, Audrina knew that she was putting on a facade.
Tearing her gaze away from the window, her blue eyes shifted back to Jim. "She is taking it day by day, but she has decided to leave Gotham for good."
"Maybe its for the best…"
"I agree, there is nothing left for her here," replied Audrina.
"Even if she had created a whole new life for herself here?"
"A life of pain, ever since he came back into her life Jim it had been chaos, now I understand she loved him…she still does, but he wouldn't want her to stay and live in the constant reminder of it." Audrina had weighed the pros and cons with staying before even suggesting moving back to London with her and Robert, however they were surprised when she had come to the conclusion herself earlier this morning.
To say that she was relieved was an understatement. Yet, she felt something was amiss with Violet.
"You're right, he wouldn't want that for her," said Jim. "What will happen with Wayne Manor."
"Technically, its not hers anymore. In the divorce, he had to remove her from the will and since they didn't have any children, Violet saw no point in remaining in it. But she is going to make sure that Wayne Manor turns into a home for the boys of St. Swinthins," said Audrina.
"Despite everything, he did end up dying a hero…"
"In more ways than one and Violet understands that, at least she tries to."
Jim nodded, "I take it you will be going back when Violet decides to go."
"Yes, Robert is done here as well and we will be going back soon. There is nothing left for me here either, Jim." Audrina sometimes wondered what life would have been like if she had chosen to build a life with Jim Gordon. Would she have left like Barbara had?
Jim considered her answer. There had never been anything for her here, their relationship had faded, but he had also wondered what life would have been like if they stayed together all those years ago.
"I am glad to see that you are in such good hands Audrina," replied Jim. "At least one of us made the good decisions…"
Audrina noticed the grave tone in his voice and she reached across the table for his hand. "Do you…ever wonder what could have been if we made it work between us?"
"I do, recently…yes."
"I do too, more often than not…"
Jim was slightly confused, "how are things with Robert?"
Audrina glanced up from their hands and instantly pulled it away as if she had been burned by fire. "They are great! Oh, don't get me wrong…its just that everything that happened between Bruce and Violet…it just reminded me of us."
She had pulled her hand away too soon. Jim could feel his hand tingle with the absence of her soft grip had been.
"You and I were a lesson to be learned…to simply cross paths along the way to where we belong. Bruce and Violet paths were always meant to be intertwined."
With that Jim Gordon stood up and gave Audrina a final glance and a small smile. Their paths had crossed one final time.
"You're completely sure about this Violet?" Robert asked as he was going through the final paperwork for Wayne Manor. He didn't seem to believe that I had come to a final decision. I hadn't told anyone the truth as to why I finally decided to leave Gotham for good.
No one knew I was pregnant.
"Yes, Wayne Manor doesn't even belong to me…" Although, it belonged to the child that was in my womb. However, why stay here and relive painful memories? Why raise my beloved child in the shadows of what once was…of what could have been if Bruce lived.
"Quite right, and it would be used for a good cause."
"That makes me even more sure of my decision, Uncle Robert," I replied more determinedly. "With the condition that it will be renamed as Thomas and Martha Wayne home for orphaned boys."
"I am sure that won't be a problem, I will personally take care of this."
"Thank you, it means so much to me…" I was so grateful for it that I struggled once again to hold my tears back. If only things had turned out differently…
Uncle Robert set all the paperwork and rushed over to me before I could collapse on the floor of the study. "Shh…it's alright, just let it all out."
At those words I sobbed even more, I just couldn't wrap my head around the fact that this time he was gone forever and that I would need to move on with my life…how could I?
Uncle Robert simply held me for what seemed like ages. The grandfather clock ticked away calmly as the rain kept trickling down outside.
Maybe it was time to tell him the truth as to why I was so sure to leave Gotham. Eventually, they were going to find out and I had a feeling Alfred suspected something. After all, he had helped me back to bed after my nausea went away and he had found me in the bathroom in the middle of the night.
I wiped the remaining tears from my eyes and slightly pulled away from Uncle Robert.
"There is a reason as to why I am so determined…" I began to say with a shaky voice.
Uncle Robert gave me a knowing look. "I figured…what is it, darling?"
There was no going back now. "I am pregnant and please don't tell anyone yet. I don't want people suspecting the legitimacy of the child. Gotham would surely say that this is the love child of myself and Batman. Which it is, but they don't know his true identity."
He nodded in complete understanding. Taking me back into his arms, he kissed the top of my head. "You are not alone,Violet. This child will be raised with so much love and not just from you but from all of us."
"I know, I just wish he was here…"
The past few days had been a blur. Everything that needed to be sorted out with Wayne Manor was done. Uncle Robert, Aunt Audrina, and Alfred helped me sort through everything else, whilst Victoria tried to distract me and make sure I wasn't hiding in a corner and crying. I appreciated her efforts as well as her company, but sometimes the need to be alone was too great and I would escape every evening to the south east corner. I wanted to say good-bye, a proper one, and close that chapter of my life.
After that, I moved to the bedroom to pack all of my things and finally leave Gotham City.
"I think that is the last of everything," I said as I closed up the final suitcase. Everything was arranged for me to move back to England and at this point there was no looking back.
Alfred looked at me with a desolate expression on his face. This was not the life he had envisioned for me and Bruce. I knew that and I wanted to just cry all over again like I had a few nights ago in the study.
"If only things had turned out differently…if I had stayed-"
"Oh no, Alfred don't think like that," I said as I rushed over to him and embraced him. Alfred was never one to break down emotionally, in fact, he had been my rock during this time. "This wasn't your fault. You had rightfully said your peace and he wouldn't want you to blame yourself."
"I have failed him and his parents…"
"Alfred that is simply not true, you raised an incredible man and became a symbol of hope for me and for the people of Gotham…" I paused for a moment and looked into his tearful eyes. Alfred stared back as my words sank in. Maybe, it was perfect time to tell him I was with child. To confirm his suspicions. "With that said, I hope you would consider coming to England with me to help me raise this baby." My hand descended onto my womb and pressed it gently.
His eyes seemed to brighten up at my final words and he simply nodded with a tearful smile.
"It would be an honor, Miss Violet."
A/N: As stated above, I will complete this story. I have an idea for the final chapter that I am still trying to work out, but I will be back with more soon!
